When ever I play I get this "ring" around my lips. I play French Horn. I've heard of some other brass instrument players getting this, so I wanted to know ho to get rid of it. I've had it for a while like over a week and it won't go away...
*Update* Ok, so apparently, I might be having an allergic reaction. I know I'm allergic to nickel, so I should probably check what its made of. Haha, thanks for all the help guys, I'll post back later and update when I get a chance.
**Update** Would having a nickel finish on an instrument/mouthpiece contain nickel? Haha, I know sounds a bit funny to ask. xD
***Update*** Thanks guys, I got a new mouthpice on sale for $38.00. It normally sells for $42.00 but the guy felt bad that I was allergic to my old one and gave us a small discount XD. Its actually worth about $55.00, but the store sells it cheaper.
It seems to help me, and help it go away. I put carmex on a lot, and that helps. Thank you guys so much!
p.s. I asked the nickel question because I might be getting a new horn from ebay.

I do get a ring around my lips, sometimes like really bright pink and noticeable and stuff, but it fades with time, like in an hour or something... why? is yours like permanent? Have you been playing higher notes or something? Cos I know a lot of people tend to press their instrument harder onto their lips, particularly when playing higher notes. If its permanent though... thats pretty scary Lolz! Although rather kool =P

I get it from my Tuba MP, and my Trombone MP.
But it's worse with my Tuba, because it's a deep MP, so it's on top of my lips [nearby the nose] and then nearby y chin.
I hate my trombone MP because it's too small. D:< [I accidentily gave my BD my REALLY good one. D:<]
Check your MP size, it may be time to get a new one.
What material is your mouthpiece? Not all MPS are solid sliver/ silver. Some are nickel. I had a nickel MP once. You may be allergic to nickel. If it's silver, I'd check with your BD, but if she/he doesn't know, ask a dermatologist or doctor. It might be a rash.
[I spazzed out the first time I got it. xD]

We get rings after playing because were cutting off the circulation to our lips It has absolutely nothing to do with mouthpiece size or the notes you play
Brass players tend to push their horn into their face, thinking that it'll make playing easier and better when, in reality, it makes it harder
Make sure when you breathe, you breathe through your mouth and pull your horn off your lips some And if you have rests, buzz and massage your lips to get the blood flowing back in and do not shove your horn into your face if you can't get a note
As for having it for like a week, it may be an allergy... who knows

but yes, the ring usually fades after a half-hour or so... so maybe its a reaction??
if this keeps up, i'd recomend getting a new mouthpiece surprised

Haha, I think if you play enough, it becomes permanent. At first glance, no one notices mine, but I can see it everytime I look in the mirror and it makes me laugh. My parents [who are both trumpet players, like me] can notice it easily as well.
I play on a bunch of different mouthpieces, but mine doesn't go away. It fades after playing though, so it's not that noticeable. I've ben playing for over 7 years, and right now i think the only way I could make mine go away would be to stop playing for a year or two xD

Maybe I have a nickel mouthpiece, I'll ask my BD, or the store where I got it from(I threw away the box), this could also explain why I didn't get this until after buying this Mouthpiece(I had to get a new one because my old one got stuck in my Mellophone's mouthpiece Adapter[the adapter wasn't stuck to the horn though]). Thanks for mentioning it though, and its been over a week now, and the only thing that seems to work is carmex, but it won't go away. I should probably check this out.

Yes, you should, especially if it is permanent. Well, the face is more sensitive than other areas of the body.

Yes, but the finish wouldn't harm your lips, it would/could give you a rash on your hand, since you play Horn, but I'm no horn player so yeah.. If it does effect you elsewhere than your lips/face: Is your instrument rented? [Like from a Music center?] Or did you buy it? Or using it from the school. If it's rented, maybe you can ask if they have either silver or a gold horn. If it's bought.. Not much you can do, can you? But if its borrowed from the school, just explain your problem, and they could get a new instrument.

It happens to me many times because I'm always playing the high notes (I'm first chair). I just try to hide my lips because I look so silly with the ring.
