mdwallin FULLY! I would say HEAPS of them are. Its because of all the theory and confidence you have to have as a good Jazz musician. All the jokes about how Classical Musicians are inferior to Jazz Musicians dont help either razz Although some of them ARE true. All the Jazz students at my school were given a task where we had to teach a Jazz piece to an ensemble of our choice. Me having ful confidence in Classical Musicians to be able to sight read any piece I gave them, thought I would go for the areas, Classical Orchestra. I gave them a piece, and half way through, there were a few bars of thick black lined striking diagonally through them. Everyone stopped. I explained what they were (indications to improvise), and we started again, once again everyone stopped. I ended having to bring some friends in to show how I wanted it done. Never again, will I give a Jazz piece to a Classical Orchestra XD Heheh that's pretty funny xD

In my experience anyone who is actually really good at what they do doesn't have to go around telling people how great they are its just given. I'm not the best sax player I do alto and I'm always competing with my friend for the best solo or first chair etc. but I say that I'm better or the greatest even though I know its not true. but its kind of a fake it til you make it sort of thing because I want to be the best.

I think Ben Wendel gave the best understanding of it today in a lecture he gave for our jazz forum. It's not about the single individual or about the audience really. It's about the music, and it's about the collaboration. No musician has the right to be stuck up about what they do because their s**t is only as strong as the weakest member in the band. Jazz is a cooperative sport XD. Weird to put it that way, but it's true. It's not about the individual's ego, it's about the music. And at the end of the day, you can be the best player in the world, but if the music sucks, then the music sucks.
Oh, and yes, I'm still around! I'm not a figment of anyone's imagination! Just been really busy. I'm finishing my degree this year!

I'm in my school's jazz band, I just joined this year. I hope people don't think I'm stuck up. People in the lower classes are pretty big assholes because we're in a higher class then they are. JUST SAYING.

Wynton can back it up though; he's arguably the most talented trumpet player in North America right now, who's surprisingly active in both the classical and jazz world. I do know what you mean though; I feel like musicians in general have pretty big egos... wink And, generally speaking, the bigger/better the horn, the more cocky the player is likely to be.

I am the jazz piano player/ Trombone player in my group and I know I am not the best on piano but I always improve more and more. I am an amazing classical as well. Sadly the Classical band I play in are too lazy to learn anything about jazz.

Jazz is pretty much the musical incarnation of Cool, so jazz chops and a big ego make pretty good sense together. I'm part of the rhythm section, and I'd consider all of us to be pretty humble, but our saxes have the market cornered on cockiness. Then again, they do sit up front.

I have this idea with good musicians. If they're are good they can be as stuck up or jekish they want, but they gotta play good. I don't interact with them mostly, but I do listen to them. When I listen to them I want to hear good music.
