Bathing just took too much time and effort, and the grit and grim kept him warm in the cooler nights, so he didn't need to go looking for shelter. Of course, winter had been another matter, but that's what had gotten him messy to begin with -- hiding in a rotting log would do that to you. Sloth felt the crawl of a tiny bug up his nose, but decided it didn't bother him enough to worry about getting it out -- it'd find its way out somehow.
"And what makes you think I care about anyone else?" Sloth asked.

"It's not a matter of caring," She shrugged, letting her claws flex lightly into the soil beneath her, "So much as it ties in to benefiting you in some way, mm? Surely you had this supposed ear for gossip--it's dreadfully easy to assume you wouldn't be below going out of your way to converse with others if you thought you'd gather some personal gain. Or am I wrong?" She wasn't, of course, and knew it. This male tried to play tricky--and was somewhat successful at it--but would always fall flat when it came to trying to fool her.
