Why are you trying to wake up?Sleep is good. And like Joshua said, you were probably to deep in REM to wake yourself up.
If you want to pass the dream time faster, just have fun messing with reality...
The dream started out scary, and when I became lucid, I got very panicked at first. That's why I wanted to wake up. The dream itself then got less scary as I messed around with it, but not being able to wake up scared me more than the initial dream did. Thus I fought to wake up.
That's the thing, I thought maybe it had to do with sleep cycles. I'm still waiting for a return e-mail from my professor. But, people wake themselves up from REM sleep a lot--ever had a dream you were about to die and you snapped awake? That's not cause REM ended, but because your panic woke you up. So why didn't my panic wake me up?

Was it that you were in a Lucid Dream and you couldn't control the dream?
Naw. It's more normal for me not to be able to control lucid dreams. In fact, I got so tired of getting thrown out of my dream body in them and forced to watch, that I rarely try to manipulate anything anymore.

Or was it that you couldn't wake your self up from the dream state?
THIS is pretty much what happened. I thought it might be dependent on the state of sleep, but people wake themselves up from deep REM a lot, so I'm not too sure that's it.
