using things in groups of three is a very old literary tactic. it's a magic power number or something. For example: in macbeth there were 3 witches and 3 murders, and probably other groupings.
We're learning about Fairy Tales in German class, and they mention that since old times, 3 has always been a magic number, just like seven. Maybe that's the reason...?
