_katgirl_ Ohayo gozaimasu! Watashi wa Arisonnu desu. Um....Neko wa ano desu. Good moring. My name is Alison. That over there is a cat. gonk I really need to practice. Another common mistake made by occidental people... "Watashi wa" used as what we called the subject shouldn't be said. Japanese people does not refer to themselves when speaking of themselves. Asian culture, as in the language, tend to refer much more about the Cosmos than their own little being. So, it is wise to avoid saying "Watashi wa" in every sentence, it is just like emphasing on ourself. In english, a good way to "read the cockiness" of the Watashi wa, would be to translate it as "As for me". So it would sound wrong if someone said "As for me, my name is Shugotenshi. As for me, my hair is short. As for me, my har is black." But, it could be use while ordering something : Watashi wa, sake onegaishimasu. "As for me, it will be sake please" just as in the english language. Implying you are placing an order for yourself, not the other who are with you. While stating fact, avoid using it at maximum. So a proper introduction would be : "Shugotenshi desu. Kami ga kuroi desu. doozo yoroshiku." (I'm shugotenshi. My har are black. I'm happy to met you (or please be kind)"

If you want to say "that over there is a cat" then you would say:
Are wa neko desu.
Although 'desu' translates in english to "is", it can only be used when identifying things, not describing locations.
So "it is a cat" would use "desu" at the end because you are identifying the object you are talking about as a cat. However if you want to say "a cat is there" for instance, you aren't identifying the cat itself but describing its location.

Shugotenshi has a very good point . . . the Japanese language is not big on pronouns at all. Watashi and other "I" pronouns (atashi, ore, boku) are used pretty minimally. Anata (which means you) is to be used with the peopl;e you are closest too and not casual friends and classmates. Kare and Kanojo mean "he" and "she," but they are usually used in reference to someone's boyfriend or girlfriend.
The use of pronouns in japanese is probably one of the first things that will baffle an english speaker, since a sentance withough a subject is not a proper sentance in english. It's also indicative of how indirect Japanese is. If you can't pick up on subtlety, you're learning the wrong langauge.

SecretRaspberryPleasures Note from Freakezette: We've decided to designate this as the "beginners" conversation thread, so people starting out can practice. If you fell you're at an intermediate level, please go to the "Nihongo no Topikku"
Here, it's pretty much just talking in Japanese I guess. If you don't know how to say something then just ask. To make this understandable for people just learning, please post the English too.
I'll start off.
Ohayoo gozaimasu/konnichi wa/konban wa. Ogenki desu wa? Genki desu. ^_^ Onamae wa nan to osshaimasu ka? Jackee to mooshimasu. Otoshi wa ikutsu desu ka? Juuroku desu. English:
Good morning/good afternoon/good evening. How are you? I'm very well. What's your name? I am Jackee. How old are you? I'm 16. I thought it was okenki desu ka? not onkenki desu wa? I don't know, but okenki desu ka is what it says here in my japanese text book. anyways... konnichi wa. Watashi wa Arwen desu. Juugo sai desu. Hello. My name is Arwen. I am 15 years old?
