Preparation
The Meaning of Fear

"We'll be there, you can count on it. And, hey, Alex? Don't worry; I'm sure he's just fine."

Zeke gave his goodbye to his big sister and hung up the phone. Immediately he raised a hand and ran it through the loose locks of his tousled green and purple hair, ending the action by rubbing the back of his neck as he digested what he had been told. He knew of Dr. Kyou's trip to find more Fel Essences; the warlock made several trips yearly to go out into the great wide world in order to bring back more components for future Raevans. This time, however, the good doctor had not phoned in for over a week and that was most unlike him.

Unlike Alex however, Zeke was not immediately feeling the dread. Ever the optimist, to the raver this was merely a case of the phone's battery dying out or some such thing that would prevent Kyou from contacting home. It wasn't a stretch to say Kyou would get absorbed by his work, so if not the phone perhaps that was the reason. Besides, they were talking about Dr. Kyou here! The good doctor had done these trips many times over, he wasn't a greenhorn. All the same, Zeke was still keen to help in the search and this wasn't a product of his inability to say no. He liked his boss and if he could do any little thing to help, he would do it. Of course, there wasn't much time to get ready. Alex said the bus would be leaving tomorrow morning and the trip was sure to last a day at least. The vet stood up, sucking on his lip ring as he tried to plan out how he was going to do this. He would have to call work and take some emergency time off for sure. Brad would have to be called and told. Zeke would have to pack for a possibly extended trip and that meant food, water, and clothing; not to mention a pack to hold everything in, a first aid kit, a sleeping bag...

"Good morning, Zeke."

Zeke looked up from his hands which were held out with fingers splayed as he ticked things off his impromptu list. Anya was just floating out of sight on her way to the kitchen and the stove therein. He stared at the spot she had just filled for a few seconds before internally calling himself an idiot. Anya. She would be a factor he'd have to account for in this as well, if he could convince her to go. Alex had said they'd need every available set of eyes they could get, and the spider queen had triple that of most people. Despite his feelings on just what the fate of Dr. Kyou currently was, he just knew his aloof Frei could be an asset in a pinch. She had a level head on her shoulders, a cautious way about her, and the fact she had largely unused web powers didn't hurt in the slightest.

In any case, it wouldn't hurt to ask. The raver got up and padded across the living room into the short span of hallway that the apartment's little kitchen branched off from. Anya turned to look at him when he crossed the threshold, frowning at his sudden desire to invade this space while she was feeding.

"Hey, Anya? I need to talk to you."

A Hot Shower

Anastacia was the first inside when Brad unlocked and then opened the door to his apartment. The lights had been left on in the Italian man's haste to get to the hospital and the loft spread out before the Widow Frei, not that she was in any state to admire its showroom-style appearance. Her eyes were fully trained on the floor she floated low over. In the time between the bus ride home, the hospital stay, and now her expression and behavior had changed from stunned, catatonic silence to guilt-ridden muteness. Brad and Zeke - the latter of which had been in and out of a daze the entire ride home - had both attempted to reach her during the long ride home, but had been unsuccessful. Their only success was effectively herding the spider queen along to keep her from staying in one place.

As Brad and Zeke made their way in, they did not attempt to do this again. The Italian man had his boyfriend on his shoulder and was aiming for the chairs cloistered around the kitchen table. Zeke was trying to ease Brad's newest wave of concern over the vet's sudden lack of ability to hold himself up. Anastacia could hear them, but their words were going in one ear and immediately out the other.

"...to need to get you cleaned up and then to bed so you can rest. You're not in any shape to..."

"Babe, I'm just a little weak. I'll be okay I just..."

Anastacia slipped sideways, coming to rest against the wall of the foyer. She began to shiver again and everything from her spindly crown to the tip of her ribbon started trembling. The terrible "movie" that was her actions and experiences during the jungle was starting to replay in her mind again and she was too weak and too tired to stop it. Some part of her wanted to know why it kept doing this to her; why she was being subjected to reliving the hell she had gone through, but some other part was saying that this was her punishment for her actions and all the terrible things she had done when that arrow had pierced her and awakened a monster within.

"Anya needs attention more than me. I just need to sit for a little, that's all!"

"Zeke..."

There were eyes on her. She could feel them. They were like two pairs of searchlights trained on an escaped criminial, only these ones made her feel like she was burning up under their gaze. Weakened and tired, still afraid of what she had done - what she was and what she could still do with herself - Anastacia turned against the wall, trying to hide herself as best she could. Even if she had a better hiding spot, the Virus Raevan wouldn't have been hard to miss. She was filthy. Despite the best attempts of the nurses at the hospital, they were unable to get the arachnid clean. Her skin was mottled in several colors - browns, reds, some purple, and even white around her mouth where she had bit Xiu hard enough to break the Sigel's skin - and her hair was no better. It was lank, damp, and stringy from the mud she had thrown herself into in an attempt to clear her skin of the burning liquid she had thought she had seen coming from her wounds back in Kahadlok. Dirt and even more mud were caked on her clothing and everywhere else. Gone was the prim, well kept queen who ruled her home with a cold and stoic demeanor. In her stead was a ragged peasant who could only dream to be so well groomed and beautiful, one who so dearly wanted to be out of the public eye but found she was at the mercy of those who viewed her.

"She needs it more than me, babe. She...I...Please, Brad."

From behind Zeke's voice welled up and then broke. There was begging in his voice as well as apology for putting the Italian on the spot like he was. There was a few seconds of silence from the older man who then agreed, albeit quietly. Anya momentarily saw him move toward her before she weakly lifted herself enough so her ribbon stopped dangling on the ground. The white hot image of the room and the two men within it lighting up under the Italian's heavy steps felt like needles were being jabbed into each and every one of her eyes.

"Anya," the Italian man's voice was a low rumble, calm and gentle. "I'm sure you'd like to get cleaned up. Why don't you come with me and I'll get the shower going for you, hm?"

The shivering increased but the spider queen did not reply. For a moment Brad's eyes left her to look over at Zeke but then the gaze was back. This time it was accompanied by a slow shepherding gesture, as small a large man like the architect could make.

"C'mon, sweetheart, it's this way."

She wasn't sure if she wanted to leave the wall or not, but she moved regardless of her desires or there lack of. Brad kept a respectable distance from her as he ushered her along, here and there warning her of obstacles that lay before her. There was a wall, the couch, a side table, and finally a door. She was told to wait and she did, hovering limply and always keeping her gaze pointed down. Brad moved past her, watching her as he did so. There was a flick of a light switch echoing in the room he entered, followed almost immediately by the rushing sound of water and its crash against the basin of a bathtub. Anastacia immediately remembered the waterfall. In response, she grasped her arm over where her first injury of the trip had occurred.

Time did not pass so much as jump forward in leaps and bounds for Anastacia. It could have been years before Brad returned and had her float into the bathroom for all she knew. What she did know was that when she did enter the room was warm and full of steam and that the rush of water from the tap had turned into the entirely different sound of water falling from the shower head.

"The towels are here for you," Brad laid a fluffy, dark green towel over a metal bar next to the shower. The man was awkward and uncertain now and there were stress lines already etching in around his eyes and the corners of his mouth. The architect was caught between a rock and a hard place: wanting to help the Widow more while also wanting to back out and take care of Zeke to the best of his abilities. "Take as long as you need. I'll have the spare bedroom set up for you in a little while and you can get some sleep, okay? Call if you need anything."

With that he left her, shutting the door quietly behind him. Anya hovered in the spot he left her in, breathing in the steam and sending it swirling away when she exhaled. She was finally alone after hours upon hours of being pursued and held and scrubbed and bandaged. It felt so foreign to her and the spider queen turned around to look at the door Brad had closed upon leaving almost as though she was uncertain that she was actually by herself. When it proved to be true, her shoulders slumped. She felt so sore and yet so deadened to everything, utterly spent. The Widow turned her gaze to the shower, finding the door there left ajar so she could find her way in. Anya had never bathed before. There had never been a reason to - she never got dirty, she did not sweat and thus did not have an odor. Second to that, drains had always given her a funny feeling; more unease than a true fear. Now though? That unease was not there. In light of everything that had happened, that sensation was completely gone. The warmth of the bathroom emanated from that shower and it called to her. Slowly she moved toward it, opened the door wider, and floated inside.

Warm water cascaded over her hands, arms, and then the whole of her partial body. Anya dunked her head under the jet last before sinking to the floor of the shower and sitting there beneath the spray. The water that flowed off her ran brown and a little red for five minutes as the mud and dirt that was caked on loosened and fell away. Anya didn't pay attention to that even though her eyes were downcast once more. The water warmed her skin and that heat fed her a little, waking her up further out of her stupor. Realization of what she had done and what she was because of those actions had been with her since Cesc had used his power to quell her rage. Now that she was coming back to her senses, it was hitting her all the harder. She felt winded and she wanted to cry, but even as the sobs started to wrack her body, no tears came from her eyes. This was only the beginning, like a key turning in a lock. There would be no sleep for Anastacia tonight.

Making An Attempt

Zeke awoke with a start; heart hammering, his body slick with a thin sheen of sweat, and - when free of the blur of sleep - eyes searching the room wildly for the thing that had stalked him in his dreams. There was nothing. Filtered moonlight cast a white beam into the bedroom, illuminating what it touched and casting off shadows to corners farthest from the windows. Zeke raised a shaking hand to his forehead to wipe away the drops of sweat that threatened to slide into his eyes before pulling his sheet entangled knees to his chest. He rested his brow there, sighing quietly with mingled relief and despair.

Another nightmare, he turned his head to the right to view his boyfriend still sleeping peacefully beside him. He smiled faintly at the sight before lowering one hand from his knees to move the older man's arm from its spot draped across his middle. The Italian's words about waking him when Zeke had another dream echoed in his head, but the vet couldn't bring himself to rouse his beloved for the umpteenth time this week alone. It was just as well that Brad didn't awaken; an architect needed his sleep and Zeke...

The vet touched over his Adam's apple and swallowed. His throat was so dry it was audible to his ears. Water, that's what he needed right now. A cool drink would serve him well, with maybe even a quick splash on his face to help his head.

"That sounds good."

Slowly he got up from the king-sized bed, pausing only once when he was sure that Brad was stirring. Once his feet were on the floor the raver wasted no time in crossing the large room to the door, which was slightly ajar. When he got there, he grimaced. His back was aching and so were the healing wounds on his arms and chest. Scratch just the water; he'd need another pill to go along with it.

Pulling open the door, Zeke quickly picked up on the sound of the TV in the otherwise quiet apartment. He furrowed his brow and thought back to earlier in the evening, certain he had turned it off when he and Brad had retired for the night. The medicine did make him a bit loopy as well as tired so Zeke chalked it up to that. It was a non-issue regardless - the living room was in between point A and point B and the TV could be dealt with at his leisure.

Zeke padded down the hall to that halfway point between Brad's bedroom and his destination. Even with eyes still heavy with sleep, the sight of the living room lights being on was a hard one to miss. He frowned to himself; those he had certainly turned off, that he was sure. As he made his way in there, Zeke found a surprise waiting for him.

Sitting on the couch, wrapped up in both a hoodie she had found and the blanket that was usually draped over the back of the couch, was Anya. All the lights were on and she was sitting slightly hunched over. Zeke watched her for a moment, watching her rub her left hand against her right then drop small chips and shards of glittering black chitin on a newspaper that had been left on the coffee table.

Guess she's done molting... She had locked herself inside the room Brad had set aside for her for the past four days. Both men had been worried about her but she only responded to their knocks and words of concern with snaps of "Go away!" or "Leave me alone!". When Zeke didn't knock and simply pressed his ear to her door he had heard her sobbing. It broke his heart then and seeing her like this broke it now, making him frown as he passed through the living room and made a beeline toward the kitchen.

When Zeke stepped into the living room, his movements startled Anastacia. She turned her head to see who the intruder was, expecting the hunter who haunted what dreams she had when she did manage to sleep. Seeing her Guardian she hunched over further, encasing herself in her chosen attire and the blanket she had picked off the top of the couch. She wanted to disappear right now. She didn't want to face him and although it was obvious he had seen her there, she wished he would just ignore her presence and go back to bed without incident after he finished his business in the other room.

If I just pretend to be asleep he'll leave me alone. He won't bother me, he knows better...

Her train of thought cut off when Zeke's bandaged arm came into her line of sight and placed a steaming mug on the table before her. Anastacia averted her eyes like a guilty child caught in a lie. She kept them down even as he walked around the table and took a seat on the couch beside her, his own glass clicking against the coffee table when he set it down in turn. There was silence for a brief moment, one waiting for the other to speak. Anastacia could imagine her Guardian chewing on his tongue, trying to find the right words to breach the quiet. She hoped he didn't. She hoped that he would just drink whatever he had and leave her to it.

"Couldn't sleep?"

The word 'idiot' flashed in her mind and Anastacia sighed. Exhaustion - from stress molting, from the jungle, from the lack of sleep, from every little thing - was what made her reply. Her mind wasn't in the right place and that was why she was unable to filter herself; to keep herself quiet.

"What do you think?"

She wasn't surprised by how sulky her voice sounded, or how tired, or how hoarse it really was. She had barely spoken to anyone since the jungle, hell, even before everyone had left the jungle. After all the screaming she had done there and the subsequent sobbing over the past few days, Anastacia was more surprised she still had a voice with which to speak.

"Sorry, I just...wasn't expecting to see you out yet." Scratching and dry looking skin were early symptoms of the raging typhoon to come, followed closely by increased irritability and aggression. By the time the latter came around the Frei would lock herself in her room and not be seen until she was completely done, which was a week's time. Generally this happened in the fall, but given the circumstances they had both gone through, the timing had been pushed up. Apparently, so had the duration.

Anastacia rolled her shoulders in a shrug, the skin there beneath the sweatshirt still a little soft in places around her folded wings.

"Did you see the cup I brought you? I'm sure you must be hungry..."

"I'm fine, thank you." The Virus Frei was watching the steam rise from the center of the mug and vanish into the cooler air above it. She wished she could do that herself, vanish so she wouldn't have to face anyone ever again. She wanted that every night since they got back; every time the shadows crept along the walls like long-fingered hands and every time she jerked awake after sinking back into that recurring nightmare where she was watching herself do all the things she had done and was unable to stop herself. Thinking about it made her feel cold all over again. The arrow in her collarbone - now long removed and initially bandaged while she was unconscious - the rage that had burst forth like some untamed beast, all consuming and gorging itself swollen. Her pursuit of her attacker, the cries of her teammates calling for her to stop, the traps and tricks laid out to confuse her, and the eventual strike against the hunter and then Iorek.

And it had been Iorek. She hadn't known him at the time, too consumed by her hatred to see him for anything but a second foe. He had tackled her in his own rush to pin down the one who sought to kill every member of Team G and she had tried twice to inflict the greatest possible hurt on his stony skin. He had shoved her away the first time and Zeke - the man sitting quietly beside her, lifting a glass of ice water to his lips - had stopped her the second. Anastacia turned her head again, the raised hood blocking her vision to the sides. Her eyes fell upon her man's arms and his chest. She didn't recall the injury to his torso but in her core she knew it had to have been her. His forearms were most certainly her doing and again she looked away from him - feeling sick. He had tried to save Iorek from her and she had ripped at his arms with her nails, making both of them bleed. He had thrown her off and she had whipped around and saw him as nothing but a third aggressor. Anya quite clearly recalled the shock in his eyes, the way his mouth sagged when he saw his cool, calm, collected Frei transformed into a whirling dervish of raw, uncontrolled anger. Then the green flare had blinded her. She had doubled over with the sound of Zeke hoisting the great stone behemoth and then their flight from that place the only thing she could hear after the whiz and pop of the flare. After that there had been Zeke's voice, calling her ahead, begging her to follow. And she had. The spider queen had given chase, fully intending to kill him and Iorek and be all the happier for it. Eventually she did catch up, and she had pinned Zeke to the ground like she had wanted to do to the hunter before him. She had been ready to strike him, had even started to bind him with her silk. Then she had seen it. The eye.

It had been the source of everything she had gone through and it stank of the man who had hunted her and her team down and tried to end all of them. She stared it down, seething, ready to take it on and destroy it. She had moved toward it, but it struck first, and from there it had been nothing but pain unlike she had ever felt before. It had been so great, so mounting, and so spread throughout her body that she had actually wanted to die to be free of it.

Anastacia shuddered. A whimper worked its way up to her lips and then past them. She wanted to bite it back but failed, too tired and too worn to succeed in anything but remember - and she wanted to do everything but that.

"Hey...You okay, Anya?" The concern in his voice pushed the exhaustion that was there out. She hated him for that, but immediately turned around and hated herself for feeling even the mildest forms of hatred for him. It was a disgusting thing to feel after what had happened, even toward a man she openly disliked and who regularly annoyed her.

"No." She said at once, her tone as clipped as her word. She bit her bottom lip to try and keep from saying more, but after a moment of ringing the blanket between her fingers she added "I'm a monster." on a whisper.

Zeke leaned in toward her and he furrowed his pierced brow again as though he didn't think he heard her right. Anya felt him shift and in response pushed away, but in doing so turned her body and allowed her Guardian to get a glimpse of her face. It broke his heart, seeing her like that. She looked like hell; older than she had looked before the jungle, with dark shadows under her eyes and hollows beneath her cheekbones. Her face physically looked thinner like she hadn't been eating, and all six of her eyes were wide and glassy with her lack of sleep and mounting stress. He gaped at her like a fish out of water - his mouth moving, but no sound coming out. She looked at him bitterly, mouth trembling in preparation for a retort when he found his voice again.

"What? No! No you're not!"

His words came out in a jumble, stammered and full of disbelief that Anya - his Anya - had actually said that about herself. She frowned at him, pinching her lavender eyes shut as she scowled and shook her head hard enough that the hood slipped off. It was as if he didn't think it hurt her to say that! It was the truth, though, and sometimes the truth was a punch in the face. She had become violent and liked it. There was nothing worse in her book.

"Anya you're not. You're not! You got injured, you got mad, and you went after the thing that hurt you but that doesn't make you a monster!"

He sounded so alarmed it was almost laughable with how he was trying to keep his voice down. But Anastacia didn't laugh, she never laughed, least of all when she was admitting to something that had been festering inside her ever since she had come out of her enraged stupor. She knew what she was.

"It does and I am, Zeke! I'm a barbarian, I did horrible things in that hellhole! I became everything I hated and...and I..." She rose abruptly from the couch, ribbon swinging with the motion. How could he look at her, know what she had done, and disagree? He might not have been by her side when she hunted down the hunter, but he had seen her in all her terrible glory when he had thrown her aside in order to save Iorek. He had looked into her face and seen a monster. How could he look at her in the way he was now, with hurt in his eyes that she was setting him straight?

She realized she was shaking all over, the same way she had done against Cesc when the eye had been dealt with and the pain it inflicted on her left her body. She watched her Guardian stand up and saw he was shaking too. He took a step toward her and she floated back. He did not pursue her from there.

"There's a difference between being a barbarian and being you."

"I fail to see it. I know what I did; I remember everything. I saw you and I know you saw me."

He nodded.

"I did, and it scared me, I'm not gonna lie. But I wasn't scared OF you more than I was scared FOR you, Anya." He looked at her square in the eye and it was she who looked away first. "What, you don't think I don't know how you feel about violence? I was there when that fight in that parking lot broke out, remember. Deep down, when I saw you I could only imagine how you'd react to what you'd been doing while you were angry. But like I said, there's a difference between you and being a true 'barbarian'."

"And I told you I fail to see it."

"You were defending yourself! You're not someone who goes around starting s**t because you want to see others suffer or you get off on it or whatever. That's the difference. You were attacked, and it's okay to protect yourself when you're attacked! If anyone has a problem with that, then they don't have their head screwed on straight."

Her scowl deepened, etching more lines into her tired face.

"Not entirely." She crossed her arms over her chest and shuddered as she remembered the zeal she had felt at the thought of running the hunter through with her wings, tying him up and playing terrible games with him until he was nothing short of dead. She had relished it then. It made her want to vomit now. "I wanted to kill that hunter. I wanted to do things that make me sick to even think about, but I can't stop doing that!" The scowl broke and so did Anya, looking every bit as damaged and angry at herself as she felt inside. She started ringing her hands again. "I close my eyes and I see everything I did in that jungle. It's like a movie I can't stop because there's no remote. I'm watching my body do these things, feel these things, and I can't stop myself even though I fight and fight and scream and sob and..."

She trailed off and covered her face in her hands. Zeke looked stunned, his gesturing caught between wrapping her up and not touching her as he had been accustomed to. She was hurting so bad and he had to help her, someway, somehow, but he didn't know what to do. She caught his movements through her arachnid eyes and snapped her head back up, all six of hers boring into his two.

"And I can't believe that you'd stand here and say that I was 'defending' myself! It might have started out that way but believe me, that ended real quick!"

"Anya I--"

"Don't you start with me! I'm not in the mood for it! I know what happened, I know what I am, and there's nothing you can do to change my mind! Just drink your damn water and go away, Zeke! I don't want to deal with you anymore!"

Anastacia wrapped her arms around herself and turned from him. Her Guardian didn't move. It was like he had been slapped and the raver appeared to be trying to soak in what she had just said to him. After a time, he started to do the fish thing again.

"I...You..."

She glared at him, then the feeling of revulsion hit her again and the Virus Raevan looked away. She hated it, but it was fact. The moment she started lusting for the hunter's end was the moment she became what she despised and thus despised herself. He didn't understand and never would. How could he? He didn't know what it was like to lose himself to that raw emotion and forget everyone and everything he ever knew in the pursuit of one awful thing. He was so naive. Anya envied him.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw Zeke's shoulders slump, but despite her words he did not resign himself just yet. He turned and sat back down, looking at his hands or watching a drop of perspiration slide down his glass.

"I bet if you talked to Cesc or Iorek," he said quietly, "they'd tell you the same thing. There were extenuating circumstances going on. We were all put in a tough spot and we all did things we weren't proud of. I'm sure neither of them blame you."

Anastacia sighed with aggravation. She raised one hand and rubbed at her cheek, trying her best to keep back the bile she wanted to spew. Cesc and Iorek? They haunted her too. Facing off against the big stony brute, using her gentler compatriot as a brace to keep herself from falling to the ground; she saw them both whenever her body succumbed to sleep and that dreaded movie started up again.

"I don't want to talk to them. Right now I don't want to see anyone, including you. Why don't you do what I say? You've always done so before!"

"Because you're my daughter? Because you're stressed out? Pick a reason, sweetheart, but the point remains the same: you're hurting, Anya, and I want to help you."

He was a pain. He was so stupid! Guardian or not, why did he always feel like he had to pry into aspects of her life like this? Why didn't he just let it go like she asked? Did he really think she would just suddenly bend to his word and start chatting as freely as a guest on a talk show? She didn't work like that, not before and definitely not now going into the future. She wasn't going to relive that nightmare aloud just so he could pick at it and tell her she wasn't something she most certainly was.

"No more."

"What?"

"Are you deaf? I said 'no more', Zeke. I'm done. I'm going to bed and you can just ******** right off."

She left him in a whirl of hair, ribbon, and the loose fabric of the hoodie. Zeke watched her go, uttering the start of a protest that Anastacia silenced with a single look. The Frei didn't slam her door when she reached her room, but the sound was still loud to the vet's ears. He knew he had screwed up. His heart ached, his nerves made him shiver in the otherwise comfortable apartment, and his thoughts gnawed on his brain as he sat there unmoving with his face soon buried in his hands. When his back twinged particularly hard in its demand for relief he finally moved from his spot, taking the two cups back into the kitchen and dumping their contents into the sink.

"...s**t."

A New Day Dawns

Cesc left by way of Zeke a while after the human and his boyfriend returned home from their shopping trip. Anya saw the Stag to the door, murmuring a soft 'thank you' as well as a goodbye to the other Raevan before the two men set off for Gambino. For a moment or two after the door shut behind them Anastacia lingered there, hands clasped before her ribbon, simply staring at the dark hardwood. Behind her from the kitchen came the sounds of Brad starting dinner - the rush of water from the faucet, the clatter of gathered pots and utensils, and a low rumbled hum of some tune the Italian had on his mind - the click of dog nails on hardwood before it became nails on linoleum, and the quiet yet still audible tick-tick-tick of the hallway clock.

Yesterday these noises had been among many that were unwelcome in the spider's world. They were noises of life going on, things progressing, people not stuck in a mire of darkness and pain. Today, after Cesc and his visit, they were among the sweetest things Anastacia had ever heard. Turning around, she strained to see farther than what her eyes allowed just to take in the sunlit hallway that stretched before her and all the little things therein. It hurt her eyes to do so, but even still, the world looked somehow brighter to her; more colorful through the haze.

Finally moving away from the foyer, the Widow slipped past the kitchen unnoticed by the big man therein and made her way back to the living room. The bowl of crafting odds and ends as well as the project Cesc had helped her start were waiting for her on the papasan where she had left them. She moved toward them, grazing the latter with her fingertips. The warm pink yarn was soft and pleasant to the touch and as she lifted her hand away Anya felt a queer itch in both to take up the needles again. With it came that rushing sensation she had felt before when she had first started the currently shapeless thing, a blossoming in her chest that made her curl her fingers into a ball over her breast. She did not let them linger there for long, lifting the project right then before turning and replacing the spot with her own self instead.

"I can do this," she said softly, and the words sounded good on her ears. Even with the Dawn Raevan gone, his presence and everything he had said lingered, sticking to her brain like a strong glue.

She could take as long as she needed to finish. It didn't have to be done all right now. In fact, it couldn't possibly be completely done right now. The jungle would try to hold on as tightly as it could - and even now she felt the blackness slithering at the edges of her sunlit room - but little by little she could make it leave. Cesc had said so and now, with a new line of stitches already complete beneath her fingers, Anya was becoming inclined to believe she could. It was still in her. This was proof. Her virtues could again be just that and in time? Perhaps she could forgive herself, even just a little.

Baby steps, Anya. One finger at a time.

Click, click, click.
