Ransom.

Aludra’s hackles rose, growing as intimidating as he knew how to make himself. However, that wasn’t a lot, considering he was only about five-feet, three-and-a-half-inches, and covered in strange patches of green scales. He jumped about a foot in the air as soon as a punch was swung, the blow aimed for and hitting the brick wall behind him. All of his bravado was shattered by that jump. He was well aware of it already. There was no reason to pretend that he was anything but terrified.

Begrudgingly, his mind allowed itself to be pulled into a not so distant memory. A time when he was called upon to bait a demonness; a time when, as soon as he was called on to fight, he ran like the stupid, flighty coward that he was. So this time… it would be different, right? He could control fire, he knew how to sword fight!

…in theory, at least.

He accepted one thing, however. He accepted the fact that, whether or not he could fight, he could not run, and he would not hide. He would stand his ground this time if it killed him.

Though he hoped it didn’t.

He meant to defend himself - to try, at least, but it all happened so fast.

The first hit - that actually involved hurting Aludra rather than scaring him came long earlier than his thought process ended. The man’s knee slammed hard into his groin, causing tri-coloured eyes to snap wide open as he collapsed to his knees.

“s**t, stop it!! What the ******** do y--”

The next blow was with a grimy, huge steel-toed boot. It hit him square in the forehead, so hard that he saw stars; so hard that his head snapped back, cracking against the wall behind him. That hit so hard that he saw nothing, and crumpled to the ground.

The man sneered, grabbing the stupid boy by his leather jacket and heaving his unconscious body up until they saw each other eye-to-closed-eye. “I want every cent that I would’a gotten out’ta you…”

---

Groaning raspily, Aludra finally stirred from his unintended nap. His mouth was dry, carrying with it the distasteful flavor of dried blood and something that resembled vomit. Still tired, confused, and disoriented, he didn’t question a thing when a water bottle was shoved in his mouth, sucking down the water in it, desperate to soothe his scratchy throat. He didn’t anticipate, or even fathom, the idea that something could have been wrong with the water that he was given, nor could he remember that the person he had last seen him wanted to bleed him dry for every ounce of his wealth.

“That’s it. Thirstier than you thought, aren’tcha ya little druggie?”

Aludra, surprised by the comment and not quite understanding what the man was talking about, tugged his mouth away from the bottle, peering at the hulking mass of a man through eyes that tried and failed to be angry, questioning in a demanding sense.

“What are you talking about…?!” Aludra snapped back with a raspy voice, terror racing to his heart and causing it to hammer in his chest, making his fingertips tremble. The man only laughed, a jeering smile on his poorly shaven face as he tossed the bottle into the air, allowing it to tumble before expertly catching it once again.

“Well, with how greedily you were suckin’ down on this cocktail, what else could’ja be?” he replied, sneering at the hybrid in the chair as Aludra blanched. They had… he had… the water- it--

“O-oh glorious apostle Saint Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered thy beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused thee to be forgotten by many, but the Church honours a-and invokes thee u-u-univ-versally as the p- the p-patron of ho-ho-hopel-l-less c-c-cas-ses…” Aludra murmured, eyes slamming shut and head dropping low, his torso held up only by the rope that kept his arms bound to the back of the chair he’d been seated in. Tears dripped from his tri-coloured eyes as hard as he tried to keep them back, whimpering pathetically; he couldn’t remember being so scared in his entire life…

“W-w-what’s i-in it…?” he squeaked out between the pathetic, childish sobs. “Wha-at fo-orm of t-t-torture did y-you ch-choose to f-force upon m-me?”

“Nothin’ much. Two ‘r three hits’a acid, powder’a one pill’a X. ‘R maybe two’a that too, no idea,” the man replied, taking a horribly sadistic pleasure in Aludra’s pitiful whining.

“Oh… m-my…” Aludra whimpered, letting out the most pathetic of sounds as his eyes once again flooded with tears…

---

“We want twenty billion. Yeah, we’re sure you have that kind of money; your son was very glad to reveal that information to us, Mister By’arre…”

The man was on the phone. He… he thought. He was pretty sure. Unless that was just a strange growth that came from his ear. Aludra’s eyes were floating more than he was comfortable with, rolling back often and taking effort to keep them focused on anything; and even then, they refused. Gentle, pathetically aroused noises fell from his mouth, saliva dripping from the corner of his mouth as he ground into the air, body shaking almost violently. He was barely in the chair anymore, slouched down too far to be comfortable as he begged no one or nothing in particular for relief from the pain building beneath his pants.

“S-stooop. I di’nt tell nee-thin’, I promiiise!!” he whimpered softly as he stared at the ceiling, squealing and closing his eyes when he realized that it was slowly sinking down on top of his. “’Top iiit!!”

“Ugh. He’s also pathetically desperate for sex, so I don’t know what a larger amount of drugs will do to him. He hasn’t even hit the peak of his high.” The most evil of chuckles. “Can’t wait to see what happens when he does. Not to mention that I guarantee that we won’t be leaving him by his lonesome for much longer…”

---

“s**t. Shitshits**t, Silas, where are they?!” Noah snapped at his love, tears streaking down his tanned cheeks as his heart pounded, terrified for his son; utterly terrified. He had no idea what the boy had done to merit his kidnapping, or such punishment, and he didn’t honestly care at the moment, as long as he got there in time and kept his poor boy alive as best he could. “This is the address, right?! Th-this is where they told us to be, right?!”

“Yes, s**t, this is where they told us to ******** be!!” Silas snapped at his lover, too worried for Aludra’s sake to bother being polite or sweet to the other frantic parent. As much as Silas detested Aludra, both on principle and because he knocked Lira up, he would never, never, have wished such a terrible punishment on him. The poor thing was probably terrified out of his damn mind… Silas sighed shakily, willing back tears as he peered into the darkness surrounding their car. “And I don’t know where the ******** they are, but we have the money, and they know that, so they’re going to come soon, just…. J-Just try and stay calm…” The teenaged senior ran a quivering hand through his hair, taking in a deep breath as he tried to follow his own advice.

Noah couldn’t even bring himself to reply. His head fell forward, hitting the top of the steering wheel as his shoulders shook. Yes, contrary to popular belief, Noah both had a car and was legally able to drive it; he just rarely had any need to. Now was one of the times where it was crucial that he have one. Still, the men who had his son hadn’t appeared from the woodwork, and he had no way to find out if they were even going to.

It was at that point that there was a sudden rapping on the window and Noah’s head snapped up, eyes going wide. At the driver’s side window were two men carrying his son in either arms; Aludra’s head was lolling on his shoulders, ankles dragging on the ground as he was pulled along, obviously unable to coordinate much movement beyond the occasional twitch or jerk of an arm.

“Oh God…” he murmured, rolling down the window as fast as he could, eyes wide as he surveyed the entire scene. Without a second thought, he grabbed each and every stupid bag that they had, tossing them into the arms of the people outside of the car, cursing the bank for making bills in minimal denominations. The transaction was a quick and painless process, the men looking astonished that there was, honestly, that large an amount of money in those bags (well, not quite, but enough that they weren’t complaining).

Noah shoved the door open shortly after, the body of his son tossed onto his lap. The young male immediately began to squirm and writhe again, crawling up Noah’s shirt front to dig his nails into the man’s shoulders, sobbing hysterically into his neck.

“Make it stop!! Daddy, p-please make it stop, I don’t wan’na melt away, I don’ wan’em to hurt me anymore, p-p-ple-ea-ease D-daddy, make it sto-sto-stooop,” Aludra cried loudly, clinging to Noah with every ounce of his strength -which was quite a lot- only for Noah to wrap his arms around him as tightly as he dared, kissing softly at his hair and taking deep breaths as he pet down the silky pink locks, trying hard to comfort him as he realized that the long braid of hair that his son had prided himself on was gone - sliced off at the base of his neck.

“You poor thing… Don’t worry, no one will hurt you any more… I’ll protect you…” he spoke softly, arms wrapping Aludra up close and letting him cry all he wanted, both loving and loathing the first time that the young male had every referred to the man as ‘Daddy’.

Aludra's Journal

Life has certainly changed a lot for me recently.

___Well, it's changed for everyone around me on top of that. I suppose 'I' could also be substituted with an 'us' if necessary. The 'us' is now in reference to my daughter, Demetre, my loving girlfriend (and soon to be fiancee if I have my way), Lirona, and my unborn son, Copeka.

___Yes, you read my right. Apparently, despite every flaw in my form, I managed to impregnate my... well, I suppose that Lirona would be considered my lover now, wouldn't she? After what we've... well, what... I assume that you know what I'm trying to imply. Though whoever 'you' are, you should go away right now, as I'm the only person who needs to understand the implications written within my journal and relating to my love.

___Alas... it's true. I'm going to be a father... again, already. Though I would never consider Demetre to be anything less than my dearest daughter, I will admit that it's a bit different to have a child forced on you than to have a biological child. It seems... bigger, somehow. There's a big lead-up to it instead of 'pop!' and it's suddenly there. I'm not sure how to feel about it... I mean, I'm excited. I'm so horribly excited. Almost too much so, though. I get so nervous that it makes me feel sick sometimes.

___Then there's... there's the kidnapping. It's not something that I necessarily want to talk about, but I can remember a time when one of my therapists told me that I should recount on traumatic events to get over them.

___...but, currently, I don't really care. I have happier things to think and talk about than being kidnapped. Currently, those things involve my daughter, who just woke up, and my Lirona, who should be home shortly.

The Final Straw

Aludra was completely unconscious, fast asleep in his bed, daughter snoozing away in her crib. That was the most wonderful thing about that baby girl of his; she was one of the only children that he’d ever known that slept through the entire night. That, and he was one of the only parents he’d ever known who also got to sleep through the entire night, though with the birth of his first son, he was expecting all of that to change. After all, he wasn’t expecting his first baby to be perfect. He was just… expecting the boy to be just that: A baby boy.

Then it came to the matter of his own fatherhood, however, as well as what seemed to be a deteriorating mental status. He couldn’t speak in calm, complete sentences without stammering, and jumped at almost every sound louder than the drop of a pin. He was worried about that, after what had happened, that something was going to set him off, make him do something that he could never forgive himself for…

But… that was silly. He was going to be fine.

Everything was going to be fine…

Everything was going to be fine. Lira could easily say that she had never been happier in her lifetime. She was with Aludra, the boy she had adored ever since she had laid eyes on him, and he would readily admit that he loved her just as much as she loved him. Just thinking about that sent warm wiggles down her spine and a smile blooming on her face. But not only did he love her, their child was due so very, very, very soon. At this very moment as she crept softly from her room to his, said baby was wriggling away gently, bumping up against her belly. Lira had to suppress a happy giggle as she laid a hand upon her stomach, stroking the baby soothingly. Everything was just so perfect…

And in such a glorious state of happiness, why would she want to be away from her loving boyfriend? Hence her reason for sneaking into his room at night, cooing softly at his bundled-up sleeping position. He and his daughter looked exactly alike… maybe he and his son would look so similar too. Lira beamed to herself as she crept into bed beside him, looping her arms gently around his waist and kissing his shoulder blades softly. He had been so stammery and twitchy after his ordeal, she just wanted to comfort all of his pain away. Her poor tragic heart-throb…

As though it was a sixth sense, Aludra could already feel the pain that he was going to be experiencing for longer than he was ready to guess at, tearing at his heart and squeezing his lungs. He didn’t understand it, however, didn’t enjoy it. His body, so tense and wound like a top, could only assume the worst. His mind, tortured by the drugs that had coursed through it and ruined him so, convinced him that nothing would be worse than the pain that he’d experienced, and that nothing could be any worse than experiencing it again. The person behind him could only be one from the nightmares running through his mind.

It was all that he could see as the snarl fell past his lips.

It was all that he could see as he shoved his captor to the floor.

It was all he could do to promise himself that he would come out the victor this time. He wouldn’t be the victim again.

He wouldn’t be the victim again

Nothing would have prepared Lira for Aludra’s sudden violent reaction. She was in such a relaxed state that the instant pain, seeming to come from a million places on her body, took her completely by surprise, so much so that it took her time to be able to scream. What had happened, what did she do wrong now…?

Life was a blur as she fell gracelessly to the floor, whimpering in shocked agony as her arm seemed to snap in two. Jake was flailing around aggressively, determined to protect them, but Aludra… Aludra was a beast. His ruthlessness was unmatched, especially by one who loved him. And that was all Lira could think about as she cowered, one hand over her head and the other over her precious child: he said he loved her. He had said the violence was done, that he had come to peace with their situation, that she didn’t repulse him anymore. Had that spontaneously changed in the night? Was her love for him still not enough…?

But then suddenly, everything changed. An uncomfortable wetness slipped between her legs, and her golden eyes shot open in a panic. Oh God, no, not now, it was too early, no, please, not now! But as the contractions came, it was clear her body had decided to get the baby out, now. Her whimpers became shrieks of horror as she felt her muscles start to contract, now not worried only for her but for her baby. Their beautiful baby… Somehow, she managed to meet Aludra’s eyes, that hellish red she had hoped to never see again, and cried out pleadingly, tinged with pain.

“Aludra, PLEASE! Stop, oh God, the baby, Aludra, please stop, the- AAAAHGOD THE BABY! Look what you’ve done to the baby!!”

Nothing registered to him. Nothing registered at all until those last words.

‘Look what you’ve done to the baby!!’

His hands dropped to his sides before coming to his mouth, eyes snapping wide open as the red leaked out of his eyes instantaneously. He shoved himself off of his abused and destroyed girlfriend, tripping over his own too-long tail as tears poured in rivers from his eyes. He shook his head silently, begging this to be a lie, begging this to be a dream, another one of his nightmares. Anything but real. He… he couldn’t have done this. He would never hurt his love. He… he would never… never hurt his baby… He… he couldn’t have…

The greed spawn didn’t even waste time getting to his feet, tripping hurriedly over his hands and knees to grab his cell phone off of the side table and dialing in the famous three-digit number as he grabbed on to the hand of Lirona’s unbroken arm tightly, rocking back and forth and crying hard as he did so. He mumbled to himself as the phone rang, too many times for his liking before someone finally picked up. “He-he-hello? We-we’re at t-two-two-f-four-f-five R-Rowes A-A-Avenue. M-m-my gi-girlfriend j-just went in-into pr-preterm l-l-labour. Sh-she’s h-hurt re-really b-b-b-ba-bad, t-too. Lo-looks like a br-broken a-arm, pro-probably fr-fractured ri-ribs… Y-yes, I ca-can stay o-on th-the line…

“Oh, L-Lirona… shh, s-shh, br-breathe, b-baby, just tr-try to bre-eathe…”
he murmured pitifully in her ear as he tried to keep the tears out of his voice, phone wedged in his shoulder, one hand holding tightly to hers as the other one pet back her hair, sobs making the teenage spawn’s shoulders shake.

Not that she didn’t appreciate it, but Lirona didn’t notice when Aludra finally got off of her, and his panicking phone call only barely reached her ears. All her attention was on her aching stomach, her hands practically digging into it as she cried out in pain, eyes pleading silently with her baby.
‘No, baby, please, please stay inside for a little longer, we’re not ready for you yet out here, pretty baby, please…’

And then Aludra was suddenly beside her once again, and she pressed herself into him desperately. It didn’t matter what he had just done - she couldn’t even comprehend what he had done - what mattered was that he was here now. He was her Aludra, her gentle, protective boyfriend, and she needed him now, no matter what. Even if going through this was hell, it would be more than hell to go through it alone. She gasped in pain as she tried to breathe - that was what you had to do in these situations, breathe, she remembered! In and out, in and out… - and looked up at Aludra in pained confusion and need.

”Ah, oh God, Aludra, I- I can’t bre-ow!-eathe… Oh, Aludra, it- it hurts, it hurts, pleeease make- make it stop…” The poor girl clung to her lover, her life, her everything as best she could with an arm that would work and a Jake that rang with pain every other twitch, burying her face in his chest and crying tears of pure fright. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this, this wasn’t supposed to happen…

Aludra’s fear was unmatched as he watched his girlfriend squirm on his bedroom floor, body wracked with aching sobs. He didn’t want to think about what might come of this, but it was the only thing that his mind could lock onto. What his stupidity could cost the both of them, the things that could have been destroyed just because he couldn’t tell a dream from reality. It was… he couldn’t… he…

He hung onto Lira as she cried, petting her hair and whispering for her to breathe, that it was okay, that she would just have to breathe and everything would be okay. He told her how sorry he was. He told her that it would be alright, that the pain would go away, that the doctors would take the pain away. He promised against his own hope that everything would be okay. That they would both be fine and that… that the baby, he would be fine, too. That their entire pitiful, pained little family would be alright.

Aludra supposed that it was the commotion that awoke his daughter, but he could barely hear her quiet, demure little tears over the pained sobbing of his lover and the pathetic sobs that wracked his own body. The operator, the person on the phone, told him that the paramedics should be there. His tri-coloured eyes flicked to the window and he nodded, replying with a pained hiccough, “Th-they’re here… th-th-thank you…”

A kiss was laid to Lirona’s forehead, and Aludra shakily got to his feet. His entire form was trembling as he watched men pile out of the ambulance through the window. He watched as they made their way to the apartment, making his own slow way to the window. “Li-Li-Lira, I’m so-so-sorry. C-call m-m-me an i-idiot, c-call me a c-c-coward, c-call me wh-whatever y-you want… b-but I ca-ca-can’t f-face th-this… I c-c-can’t… I-I…” his voice descended into sobs, unable to finish what he was going to say as he slipped out the window and onto the fire escape. “I l-love y-y-you, L-Li-Lira. I lo-love C-C-Cop-peka, too, a-and De-Demet-tre. T-take g-g-good ca-care of th-them f-f-for me, a-a-a-alr-r-ri-ight…?”

Lira barely heard anything that was said until the siren of the ambulances whirl outside her window, a sound that was dimly recognized in her brain and made her weakly raise her head to look towards the door. The doctors… They would save the baby, their little Copeka, they would make sure that he was okay, they had to… The most wavering of smiles began to form on her face as she saw the men piling in, and her hand reached out to lock with Aludra’s. He’d done good, he’d saved the baby, everything was going to be okay…

And then everything was wrong. Aludra wasn’t there, Aludra was leaving, Aludra was going out the window! She cried out in sorrow and confusion, barely hearing his muttered and pitiful excuse. As she was lifted onto the stretcher, the panic and pain of her situation, coupled with the horrifying idea that she would face this alone broke something within the young woman. Her face contorted into a glare beyond ferocity, and she screamed towards the window at the retreating back of her lover. ”NO! No, damn it, Aludra, please, P-PLEASE come back here, get back here, don’t make me face this alone you despicable coward, I swear to God, I’ll- I’ll-“ She could only tremble in fury for a moment, then tears streamed down her face as she screeched. ”IF YOU EVER ACTUALLY LOVED ME, YOU SELFISH p***k, YOU’D GET BACK HERE AND FACE THIS LIKE A MAN! You stupid jackass, you jackass…” Anger spent, she collapsed back onto the stretcher, sobbing in tired hysterics as her stomach throbbed, every tremor a reminder of what Aludra had done, and what he didn’t do…

”What the ******** do you mean, I can’t see her! She’s my damn daughter, and I have every right to know what’s going on! What the- Get your hands off me, you little jackass!”

An EMT fell to the ground as Silas’ fist struck him across the face, and within moments he was at Lira’s side. ”Lira, honey, what’s going- Oh… Holy s**t…” He stared in panic at the blood coming from in between his daughter’s legs and he shook for a few moments before shouting with increasing panic. ”Noah… NOAH!” Tears began streaming down the young man’s face as he grabbed Lira’s hand, stroking her hair soothingly and trying to sound calm. ”Shh, it’s going to be al-alright, baby, everything’s going to be okay…”

Lira latched onto Silas’ hand when it appeared, barely noticing or caring who it was. She wept freely, only able to murmur the same thing over and over. ”Make him come back, Daddy, he ran away, make him come back…”

Aludra's ( New ) Journal

Would... would you look at that? That picture... I sent Damien to Lirona's house, in the hopes that, maybe... well, that perhaps I would be able to find out what kind of damage I really had done. Turns out, I had sent him over on the same day as a baby shower. A baby shower not only for my elder sister's lover, but for my own... well, if she is even that anymore, which I doubt by this point. Yet what I wish to point out is that I sent him over with a camera, to bring me proof of what... what had become of my mistakes.

I could never have expected to be as overjoyed as I was with the result. The attached pictures are all... they're... they're of my son. The one that was actually... he's okay. He's small, I mean, and Damien said that he gets sick a lot -he overheard it- but... he's alive... and he's so beautiful, isn't he? Deep purple skin with white flecks, golden eyes with red rims. He has two little, different-coloured horns that are nothing but little stubs. Two tiny, perfect little golden wings and a tiny nub of a tail that twitches about when you poke at it. He's so... perfect.

I have... every intent now to turn everything around. I know that I can't just dive back in where I left off, expect everything to be perfectly fine despite the fact that I completely abandoned my son's mother and all of that. I know that I will have to work hard to make up for what I did, and I intend to. Having these pictures of my son are going to to inspire me to do whatever I can possibly do to be a good father to him.

After I left, I couldn't have even thought about living through the next week, let alone the next few hours. It was Damien who found me on the roof of that apartment building, playing Russian Roulette with gravity ( in case you ever wondered, that's with a bullet in every chamber ). He kept me from throwing myself off of the building and practically had to beat the truth into me to get me to actually believe anything that he was saying. Thank the Lord that I actually listened to what he'd said or I wouldn't be here today, be here to see my son, even if it's only on prints of film. As a matter of fact, Damien has helped me a lot over the past few weeks.

Following my attempted leap of faith, Damien followed me around the entire city as I paced around, ranting and crying, tearing at my hair, my feathers, my scales, anything that I could do to punish myself for what I had done. When I finally managed to wear myself out, well into the next day, he half-dragged me back to my spirituality teacher's house, of all places. Apparently they have a personal relationship that I hadn't known about. Since then, I've been staying with the both of them. I barely ate, walked, or talked until the day that Damien came back with all of his pictures, doing nothing but staring at the ceiling or sleeping. I owe a lot to the two of them for putting up with me for all of this time.

Alas, now I have other things to worry about, such as the family that I need to once again win the approval of, find my way back to their hearts. With that in mind, I swear, here and now, that I will do anything to be with my family again. If I have to travel to the ends of the Earth and come back with a castle for my queen and my little prince, I will do it without hesitation.

With hope for the coming years,
Aludra By'arre... Father. ♥
