Theory is is that when the atoms collide then it could create a mini big bang. When that happens we will get Petaflops of data. We could also find how dark matter is made and look at it. And a petaflop is the largest known amount of data doing over a quadrillion calculations that is over 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 at once. But there is some people saying when the atoms collide that they will create a black hole and it will destroy the world. That, to me, is highly impossible because it has been proven that the gravitational pull has to be too strong that it collapses into a tunnel that, in turn, sucks everything including light. But it wont be until October that they start colliding atoms. If you don't understand what a petaflop is then look on google.

Aldera Nobody has adequetly explained to me how that thing is safe. crying That's because its physics. I don't understand it, and neither do most people. From what I gather, though, you're safe because they say so. Some physicists say it will destroy the world, but most don't. So there you go. biggrin Its all theoretical.

And what, my long thing on what is suppose to happen and why people say it will destroy the world doesn't sum it up for people who understand physics like me?

Well there is regular physics, that of which I have some understanding of that remains from high school, but then there's metaphysics and whatnot, and that's where everything gets confusing.

Yeah, you even got the number of black holes wrong.
It could create SEVERAL miniature black holes. Too small to be classified as real black holes. According to the popular theories of the day, they'll all "evaporate" due to Hawking Radiation. But there's been no direct proof that Hawking radiation actually exists, so there you go.
It could also create super-dense "strange matter" that would effectively act like little black holes, as well--that is, sucking all the matter around it into it and turning it into likewise super dense strange matter.
But, I really don't think that the majority of the physicists in the world would support a project that they think has a reasonable chance to kill all of them... and everything else.

Yeata Zi DAMNIT ALL TO HELL! I'm so sick of people saying "LOLZ, IT'LL KILL US ALL!" AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! 0_0 Why? I got a bit spooked today when I picked up my campus newspaper, and the headline was "UA physicist's paper used in lawsuit: Research used as evidence against particle collider." However, the Professor in question did not actually think the LHC was a threat, and claimed the guy that issued the lawsuit had misused or misinterpreted his findings.

Yes, you could say that about almost any scientific finding. People can still debate gravity and magnetism. Sure lots of technology relies on the flow of electrons, but we still don't fully understand the energies we manipulate every day. I wish I was better at physics. I am sure that if a real scientist walked in and read my post he or she would consider me a total ignoramus.
