i have received a great number of warnings in the past week. Quote: I wouldn't be so trusting if I were you Quote: THIS HAS HAPPEND BEFORE THEY WILL *gulp* KILL YOU! Quote: Don't let S Corp cloud your thinking ... there is way too much chaos and confusion. Quote: ... reassure me that the problems are all under control Quote: I'm worried about you. Something seems wrong about S-Corp this year. I've heard horrible rumors. to answer the concerns of these and others who have expressed their worry i have included a short fable a teacher of mine once told me a long time ago: see next ...

... continued (11-20-05 9:35pm)
in the countryside of japan there was a small village nestled under the shadow of a small mountain .. the mountain, while neither beautiful nor impressive, befitted the village in its humble presence .. on the outskirts of the village stood a small farm in which lived an old man.
the old man tended to his farm, and kept mostly separate from the village and its villagers while the village and its villagers mostly left the old man alone.
it came to pass that a terrible storm swept the countryside .. its drenching rain and powerful wind bent the bamboo and shook the walls of the meager houses of the village.
in the aftermath of the storm the villagers saw that the fence surrounding the old man's field had been destroyed in many places and his horse had run away .. feeling sorry for the old man they came to him saying, 'we are so sorry that this horrible thing has happened to you; you are a good man and do not deserve this misfortune.'
the old man laughed.
'misfortune? i only know that my fence is damaged and my horse is no longer in my field. we can not know what this means, only that this is. we will see.'
so when, several days later, by the time the morning sun had risen .. the old man's horse had returned bringing with it eight magnificent wild horses .. the villagers were astounded.
'we apologize, we did not know the future, you were right. you are very wise to have known this would happen. please forgive us for doubting. you are most certainly deserving of this good fortune.'
'good fortune?'
again the old man laughed.
'i can only say that my horse has come back to me bringing with it eight wild horses; i do not know what this will mean tomorrow. we will see.'
it was only later that week the old man's son was thrown while trying to break in one of the wild horses .. both of his legs were broken and the village doctor said that the old man's son would most likely be crippled for life.
'you were right all along, this whole thing has proved itself to be a curse. now your son is crippled and will never be able to ride a horse again. we are so sorry.'
but the old man simply laughed.
'a curse you say? i say only that my son was thrown from a horse and has broken his legs. no one knows how this will shape the future. we will see.'
only days later a war broke out far to the north .. the emperor decreed that all able bodied young men were to be sent off to fight in the war .. many of the villagers sons were killed.

we can never know what today's events will become tomorrow .. i am certain as the future unfolds things will get much better .. i am also sure that things will become much worse .. like the waves on the ocean constantly rising and constantly falling .. this too will pass .. this too will become something else .. the only thing i can be certain tomorrow will bring is change.

edna st. vincent millay We shall learn nothing; or we shall learn it too late. Why should we wait For Death, who knows the road so well? ... another dream tonight .. ... .. no .. this one .. this one was worse .. a nightmare perhaps .. i can only remember screaming .. terror .. blood .. ... .. so vivid .. so overwhelming .. by the way my hands still shake i am certain the parts i do not remember are infinitely worse. the top of the wave has passed .. it is falling now .. how far down does this wave go?

So much for routine. Today, alarms sounded. Something big happened. As per usual, I was not where it happened, but it was close. Other Elftechs ran past, said a few got hurt bad. But then, business as usual again, as if nothing happened. Interesting times.
Everything was productive, other than that bit of excitement. I wonder what really happened. If Mrs Claus is saying we should get back to work, it couldn't have been too bad .... could it?

Journal of ElfTech722 Monday, November 21st, 2005 5:50 PMMrs. Claus called me into her office this morning. I knew the jig was up. "I have over 150 hours of security camera footage recording your antics here at work," Mrs Claus said. "I was unable to find even ONE HOUR when you were actually doing work of any kind! You play cards, you sing ( off key, I might add ) and spend all of your time chatting it up with friends and playing blackjack with the reindeer!" Mrs. Claus was more than a little upset. She seemed furious. I tried to mount a defense ... "Well, you see--" "Silence! If you think you can get away with this, think again! I am ashamed of you!" Mrs. Claus scolded. "Now, here is a scrub-brush. I want you to scrub the floors of all the facilities on your hands an knees. Do an extra good job! I want that floor to be spotless. I am giving all of the credit for the moonshoes and the CoKi Kitty utility belt to Elftech003. If elves could be on the 'naughty-list' you would be at the very top!" So here I am today, scrubbing the floors. I try to practice my songs, but all that comes out is: "She sees you when you're sleeping, She knows when you're awake, She knows if you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake!" Santa may see everything, but he's nothing compared to Mrs. Claus. She misses nothing, that eagle-eyed hawk. I know hawks do not have eagle-eyes. They have hawk-eyes. But it doesn't sound as good saying 'eagle-eyed eagle' or 'hawk-eyed hawk'. Cut me some slack. If I didn't have my upcoming magic show, I would be really depressed, but all I can think about is my tiny elf costume lit up in all its glory beneath the glorious stage lights. The Amusing Elf will rise again! P.S. I decided to stick with the stage name: The Amusing Elf. I don't care what people say. My work speaks for itself.

Osho ... this is the only distinction between the dream and the real: reality allows you to doubt, and the dream does not allow you to doubt.... i have reason to believe my incoming messages are being tampered with .. the number of concerned gaians i have received warnings from has been rising almost everyday .. today i received none .. many of the messages i have received look like they have been censored in one way or another .. all of them show signs of having been scanned or read. to test this theory .. i sent myself a pm with a 'sniffer' embedded in it .. sure enough .. not only did the message take almost 10 minutes to make its 'round trip' .. the log shows that it was opened multiple times by computers in at least two distinct locations within the facility. i will go on trusting .. uncorrupted .. the enlightened fool .. but i am not stupid .. 571 once taught me the amusement of a good late night stroll .. maybe it's time to see if i still remember the things he's taught me about the security grid. Osho ... the search for personal knowing is very, very hazardous. Nobody can guarantee it. If you ask me if I can guarantee anything, I say I can not guarantee you anything. I can only guarantee danger, that much is certain. I can only guarantee you a long adventure with every possibility of going astray and never reaching the goal. But one thing is certain: the very search will help you grow. I can guarantee only growth. Danger will be there, sacrifice will be there; you will be moving every day into the unknown, into the uncharted, and there will be no map to follow, no guide to follow. Yes there are millions of dangers and you can go astray and you can get lost, but that is the only way one grows ... To accept the challenge of the unknown is the only way to grow.

Journal of ElfTech003 Tuesday, November 22th, 2005 10:40 AM Sunday.Something happened in Sublevel F. Rows of cages stood vacant. Dozens of white creatures were missing. The air was musty and damp, like a wet towel left crumpled on the ground for days. Listless creatures prowled their cages, melancholia hung in the room so thick it was palpable. A small cage with two small puffs crouched inside, the lock on the door had been left carelessly loose, unlatched. Faint voices could be heard in the corridor. I scooped one up, it didn't protest as I tucked it under the front of my lab coat. A rusty ladder in the corner ran from floor to ceiling and connected all the levels. I climbed up with my small charge. A dark closet met our exit, I left the trusting creature in a box, and scurried back down. The voices drew nearer, just around the corner now. Metal clinked, the heavy wheels of a cart? Aggressive sounds. A rush of air intensified that stale odor. I grabbed the other, and ran. Monday.Containment breach. The muffled air-raid sirens floated up through the air ducts, panic spread as the alarm wailed upward. Rumors of injuries, a game of telephone reached my ears and I heard "Guards! Killed!" (Guards?) Camera feeds have been blacked out in all sectors of Sublevel F. The epidemic of blindness increased, there was barely a red eye left in the facilities. Secrecy reigned. The voice of Ms. Claus made an announcement, my heart thumped painfully, an elf was singing on the floor -but nevermind, nevermind- my fear unfolded and wrapped around my throat. I checked on my two furry stowaways. They nestled in the shelter I constructed for them, intact and safe while they slept, one delicate snowflake against another. I stayed with them for hours, until my stomach unknotted and subsided, and all was quiet in the building save for the breathing of our illegal triad.

Journal of LabTech101 Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005 11:30amWhoa... where am I? Last thing I knew, I was ... oh yeah. I remember carting some more crates of those fuzzy white thingamabobs into Sublevel F... I've been up for 5 days straight now... I can't tell if i've been asleep or awake...day and night have started to blend into each other and I really can't tell anymore... but I think I had this crazy nightmare... l think I was almost done unloading the last crate when the room turned 70's disco! Red lights and strobes oh my... I felt like I was in a daze. Then I started hearing noises... like big thwomping foot steps. And screaming. crying I think Jim and Bob were on duty that night in Sublevel F. I remember cause they always played big 2 while on their shift on their cardboard box table. Anyhow... I hoped the screaming wasn't them. I suddenly felt really scared... the thwomping footsteps were getting closer... so I bolted for the door. But before I got there, a HUMONGOLOID white fuzzy thing with big claws and teeth roared in my face and then swung its big claw at me! eek Next thing I know, I'm here... awake... or am I? Somebody help me. crying

Journal of ElfTech571 Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005 1:30pmI'm supposed to be back at the big house today, but I have a bad feeling about it. Elftech 247 said they needed me back on the production line as soon as possible. I don't know if I'm feeling up to doing the magick for Translocation today...I went over to Akea last night and Liam and I knocked back a few beers. I think the only reason he was able to drink me under the table was because he's about three times as big as me. I don't even remember leaving the bar, or anything else from last night; and it's probably better so... Looks like I'll have to put myself on my own list. Then again, I always do, anyway. If for no other reason than I have to sign the blasted thing at.the.very.fracking.bottom. Maybe I'll just hang around here for a while. Follow-up research. Yeah.

There is some seriously weird stuff going on around here, and I'm not just talking about the yodeling version of Tickle-Me Lamos we've been considering making. I heard 123 prattling something about how Jim and Bob the security guards aren't going to be eating lunch with us anymore. Oh well, more neopizza for me to sneak home in napkins. Some kind soul sent me a bottle of pop a couple days ago. It came in by RedEx. I wish I could make out what it says on the label; it looks like the label got smeared off, probably from the melted ice around it. (There's no shortage of ice around here!) All I could read on what remained of the label was "L-V- POT--N." I popped the cork and it smelled like ABC root beer, my favorite! So I did what any ABC root beer loving elf would do: I chugged it all down. Mmmm...it was tasty!
