Kanzaki was woken up by Kawa biting his hand. "Son of a--" That only made her bite down harder before releasing. "He said stay awake and don't move, didn't he hun? That's the first step!" Giving his wrist a shake and cracking his neck, Kanzaki closed his eyes to meditate. "I won't explain what it feels like, because it can't be explained. You'll know when you feel it. You have to remain still, completely, to feel and take in natural energy. After that it's as simple as combining it with your spirit and physical being like chakra." [1/10]
He didn't nod to move or anything like that. He kept himself still, breathing in and out only, stretching his awareness. He didn't feel anything different after the first few minutes, and nothing after an hour. "The hardest thing for a living creature to do is be completely still. Your breath, your muscles, your limbs." Still he sat, eyes closed, furrowing his brows for a moment when he realized that was moving sighed, and remained motionless. [2/10]
It would have been nice if he had been told this before last night, but that was the way of training; to not ask questions. It was not until high noon when he felt something new in his life force, only to feel a smack across his face, breaking his concentration, cupping his cheek. "Care to explain?" "You felt it. I know you did. That's because, hun, once you take in natural energy and you're not accustomed to it, you begin to turn into a dog, and then stone." If he failed this training he was going to be turned into a rock Pomeranian and no one felt that was important information before now? [3/10]
"Was I cute at least?" Kawa laughed and wheezed, smacking him with the Senjutsu Beating Stick for the hell of it. "Hun, your face was covered in fur. Now enough flapping those cheeks!" Kanzaki crossed his ankles again, placing his closed fists in his lap, and sat. "You're trying to pull with your senses. Just feel for now, hun." It must have been unconscious, like how he spread his awareness out with Shigure Souen to feel hostility. Hamakau was right after all. [4/10]
He could feel the sun setting on his face when he felt that strange presence again. It was everywhere and all around him, and at once it was him. The grass, the wind, the stone, even Kawa herself. All those ages ago the monks talking of Heaven and Earth, and it was a decade before he understood the concept. "There!" Kawa slapped him across the stomach with the stick, knocking the wind out of him, and thus the energy. "It took a whole day, hun, but you felt it now, hmm? What you're feeling is what animals and plants feel all the time. Hard to describe, isn't it?" He didn't nod, but instead got back into position. [5/10]
Kawa shook her head, heading back to the cave to eat and get some rest. Knowing from their prophecy that he wouldn't quit once he began, Hamakau would watch and guide him at night, and Kawa during the day. It'd be another full day before Kanzaki could feel nature energy again, and this time he was ordered to draw it in with his chakra. Of course, the transformation began instantly, but he wasn't beaten until his height started to decrease, after canine features overtook him. "You're addicted, aren't you boyo?" Kanzaki just grinned stupidly. Between giving up his entire history to an outsider and feeling nature for the first time, especially after he'd spent years as a capsuleer or dead, he felt at peace during this training. [6/10]
It would go on like this for nearly a week, of his meditating from before the sun rose until after it set. Only after that point did he give himself a day of rest and allow himself to eat in the mornings, before long making it his daily routine. Kaoru was even allowed to visit, escorted by Aoiyasha, so that the two could play. She was being taught the common tongue, while he was learning more of the canine tongue as the days went by and he grew more attuned to the dogs. In his mind he came to understand their speech more, within his body a change was taking place in his eyes, giving them a florescent coating to shine light back at night. [7/10]
After another week he was slapped awake by Kawa, having been trying to gather energy in his sleep. "You dingus! Do it in your sleep and you won't wake up. It's time to change things up. We gotcha something here." Pakkun had brought up a one foot high cone made of dense stone, with a two foot square slab made of the same material. "From here on, you're going to find your balance and keep it hun." So on to the balancing plate it was, but it wasn't just about keeping still. The better he got at gathering energy, the less he was slapped, and more he was called upon to do tasks. Lift a boulder, carry increasingly larger dogs up and down a steep hill, chop down a tree with his bare hands. All things to make him more accustomed to using the natural energy in his body to increase his physical ability. [8/10]
As the days dragged on, the amount of physical mutations into doggodom happened less frequently, and he could perform while still maintaining pawed feet or ears on his head. "Excellent progress. Now, boyo, the fun part. Balance the new energy with your own chakra." Kanzaki had the perfect technique for it, and only had to raise his hands in front of his chest to create a Rasengan. While keeping his body still, its own rotation made a breeze that ruffled his hair and slight fur around his wrists. Starting very carefully, he injected some of that natural energy into the sphere of pure chakra, which naturally exploded and sent him flying backwards on his rear, earning him a smack across the shin. "AGAIN!" [9/10]
The amount of time he could hold natural energy in him was now longer than any fight he'd been in up to that point now. It had taken a few weeks, and his control was still somewhat lacking. Yet, the transformation was stable, if imperfect. Kanzaki had sprouted two ears atop his head in his Sage state,his nails growing longer. For the first time Hamakau and Kawa spoke to him together as he stood before then in the shining sun. "If you think you're a master now, think again, boyo. He's right hun. We deem you a Sage of the Dog Clan today, but you have more to learn. We won't keep you here too long, since we know Kaoru would like a change of scenery. We just hoped he help get you started on your own path." "I can't thank you both enough. I know now that there was a wisdom I lacked, making me a philosopher now. Perhaps I should write a book. I'll only be a true Sage when I attain that wisdom. I won't stop learning, but I can't learn it all here at once." "Exactly, hun. Don't be a stranger now, boyo." Just that one time he knelt down and the two dogs hopped into his lap to lick his face, which at their age wasn't seen as terribly wise or graceful, yet it stood as a sign of their acceptance of him as a person, not just as the Sage. Letting the natural energy disipate from his body, he took on his human form once again, save the shine in his eyes at low light. Back down in the village he said his goodbyes as best he was able with cheeks, as canines had none, met up with Kaoru who had made them some fish, and headed back to the human world with a new outlook and purpose.
