It was around lunchtime, the air emanating with a peaceful silence save for the quiet alto voice which lifted gently from the first floor of the Hinasaki household and the chirping of the birds outside — and two chirping nightmares hopping about in the backyard.
An ear-piercing shriek sounded from the upstairs of the two-story house, fading out after a minute as the one who had first let out the scream lost air support in her lungs, finally coming to an abrupt end as a series of breathless coughs were released.
Kimiko, whom had been chopping carrots in the kitchen, suddenly dropped the kitchen knife which she was wielding upon the counter and rushed upstairs, as did a quite disgruntled Q whom had been in the middle of a segue when the shriek had split the air. It took them but a moment to discover the one who had made the scream, who was kneeling upon the floor in a sullen position with her back facing the floor.
As they approached the door of the pink room, a black cat dashed out of the room in shock, the small bell which was hung upon her collar jinging with excitement. The cat weaved through the two teen’s legs rapidly and dashed downstairs, causing them to lose balance and topple into the room face first in an almost amusing manner.
“What’s wrong?” the older teenager asked in a state of confusion after she had pulled herself up from the hardwood floor, still flustered by the quick exit she was forced to make from the kitchen. With a childish whine, she twisted her index finger as to stop the light bleeding which was coming from a small nick that she had made when dropping the kitchen knife in such a hurry upon the counter.
“Yeah, you interrupted my segue!” Q stated after pulling herself up from the floor as well, crossing her arms across her chest in an annoyed manner. She stepped over to see what Mayu was cradling in her arms, scratching her cheek in confusion as the Legend slowly lifted her head to reveal the object.
“...It’s just a fan!” she said after a moment, stomping away in frustration all the while muttering angrily about her interrupted song.
“It’s ripped!” Mayu managed through a teary voice, letting out a large sniffle before turning around and opening the folds of the fan so that Kimiko would see.
The pink fan which Mayu had received from her “godmother” Kamtrouble as a young baby was held in her hands, a small rip peeking through between the middle fold. It was hardly something to make a big deal out of, being only two centimeters in length at the most, but it was to be expected; the fan was Mayu’s favorite, being painted over with an elegant design of a cherry branches in full bloom. It was also the first and foremost fan in her growing collection, which made it all the more special.
Kimiko nodded in understanding, knowing that she would feel the same way if one of her treasured reference books had been torn in any way. Stepping over to her daughter slowly, the teen sat down to give the girl a gentle pat on the back, taking the fan gently from her fingers and examining the tear with a critical eye.
“About one centimeter in length, going down vertically, over the trunk of the cherry tree... Good, it’s not on one of the cherry blossoms,” she muttered after looking over the fan for a moment, snapping it closed dramatically before looking over to Mayu with a wide grin. “It can be fixed, don’t worry! We just need some craft glue and maybe some newspaper and paint, if the paper that belongs there has been partially torn off.”
Kimi could have saved the theatrics, but she was pretty certain that Mayu needed all the reassurance that she had wanted at the moment. Rising to her feet, Kimiko extended a hand to the Legend child as to pull her up.
Taking her mother’s hand, Mayu let out another large sniffle before looking over to the fan. “Are you sure you can fix it, mum?” she said, a bit shakily.
“Definitely!” Kimiko replied with a grand sweep of her arm, tucking the fan securely into a belt loop before marching out of the room with a...
