It wouldn't be long until winter was here: the meadow was bounded by a lake and a forest but in the distance, snow-capped mountains peaked, gloriously dazzling as the sun hit the shining white which clung to them even in these warm months. They were steep, and the meadow's elevation was high; lushness, well drained soil, a plethora of creatures to take in this unusual bounty… but all restricted by the promise of those tall, jagged peaks: this was winter's land.
Seasonality, the natural way of the world, the changing seasons and their effects were all exemplified in this one place.
All this, Yujiang observed as he watched from under The Tree. He had found The Tree by sheer chance - a stunted Scot's Pine which, atop a small rise, ha been buffeted by the wind, blown sideways and generally kept in its place by the ferocious winds which he imagined must come through this meadow in winter. At the moment, the poor thing had put up some hopeful new branches: winter would see to those - but the odd sideways spread of the tree, so unusual for its kind, had given him the perfect place to rest.
Dense branches, tightly packed, afforded him shade from rain or shine. The soft earth underneath was warm and the shade of the tree had stopped anything serious taking root so unlike the rest of the meadow, he didn't have to wrestle with three-foot high grass just to lie down, and, of course, the view was spectacular. That mattered a lot to Yujiang - not that the world be pretty - but that he could observe it not matter how it was.
He'd have to leave soon, he knew, find someplace more southerly to overwinter. He wasn't silly enough to imagine he could stay here, and he didn't want to go further north when he wasn't sure he'd find anyone; if only he'd arrived here earlier in the season! Ah well, maybe next year.
