Special Event!

Dagron has triggered a special event.

Upon hefting your pickaxe to retire from mining, you hear a small, almost imperceptible hum, as that of a tuning fork, low and metallic. You turn your head to find the source of the sound, and realize that it is coming from the stone face you had just been working. Looking closely, you can see a glint of metal in the rock. A few deft swings of your trusty pickaxe, and a small, silver orb of metal falls free. Roughly the size of your fist, the orb is intricately carved, and one side is grooved and notched.

You turn the orb over and around, looking for clues as to its origin, and find none. Holding the orb up to your ear, the low hum becomes suddenly deafening, and then you hear... Nothing.

The world has gone silent around you, but as you look around, concerned at your sudden deafness, you can swear that you hear a low hum, in the distance.

Soon, your hearing returns, and the only hum that you hear is from the orb in your hand.

This phenomena is repeatable, and any time that you hold the orb to your ear, the results will be repeated.

Name: Mysterious Carved Orb
Description: A heavy orb, carved and intricately engraved. Its use is unknown, but it emits a low hum that sounds almost... Mournful, as if it is calling out for something.

To continue the quest:

Hold the orb to your ear, and then begin to search for the faraway hum

First, roll a search roll, 1d100+listen, and upon surpassing 50, you will find a mining node in the middle of the forest, (not necessarily near the cave) that is a large stone, roughly cube-shaped and approximately three feet to a side.

Five mining rolls must be made, each yielding from the following drop chart:

1-25: disaster! You strike the stone and it disintegrates into gravel and dust. You will need to find another node to continue your quest.
26-50: +3 mysterious stone
51-75: +5 mysterious stone
76-90: +7 mysterious stone
91-100: +10 mysterious stone

upon successfully completing the five rolls without utter disaster, turn in your mining and you will be given the next stage of the quest.

Special Event!

As you hack into the wood of a fallen tree, you see black, sticky sap clings to the blade of your axe, splattering every time you strike the trunk. Your face is spattered with the sap and you wipe it away. It is not so sticky as it should be. It feels wet.. Almost like blood.

You are utterly perplexed, until you look down at the harvesting node in question. It is vaguely humanoid shaped, with arms, and even a head, though any potential facial features are difficult to discern. The creature appears to only have one leg, though, the other terminating jaggedly. The wood there appears to have been broken, though no sap leaked from the area.

You kneel down and touch the wood, running your fingers along its remarkably smooth surface. You feel a subtle vibration in the wood, and the black sap seeps slowly out of the cuts your axe has made in the torso of the figure. The vibration is strongest in the 'chest' of the effigy, and as you inspect the figure, you see that it is not likely carved, but rather seemed to have grown in this shape naturally.

Suddenly, it begins to move beneath you, and glowing green eyes turn to face you. The creature moves slowly, and looks down at the wounds that it has incurred. Touching the fresh, bleeding injuries, it pulls away large wooden fingers that are dripping with its lifeblood.

The creature does not betray any emotion, or you simply do not know how to read it, and it reaches down to a spot where one might wear a belt. It produces a wooden cylinder; a scroll case, not carved, but grown into shape. It lifts its head and points with its bloodied hand to the scroll case.

As you open and upend the container, a scroll falls into your hand. Opening it, you find crude map on a rough parchment. The text of the map is unreadable, an alien language that you do not understand, and the map appears to lead toward a grid around a barbed and intricate rune.

The creature seems to be moving more slowly, and the black sap is not flowing so quickly anymore. It moves its hand to your axe and moves the head of the tool to a place near the center of its chest. It seemed that it wanted you to end its suffering.

You raise and lower your axe, biting deep into the wood with a crack, and the creature raises its head to look down at the wound, and its hands come up. Grabbing at the walls of the injury, it begins to pull, the wood cracking and splitting and groaning as it tears the wound open.

Inside is a wooden fist-shaped object, carved with intricate runes that glow soft green. You understand what you have to do to end the creature's life. Reaching into the cavity, you take a firm grasp of the glowing object, and with a firm pull, you separate the creature from its heart.

The creature slowly loses its light, its eyes flickering as its hands fall limply to its side. Its head falls back and the light fades from its eyes.

Name: Heart of the Treeborn
Description: A smooth wooden construct, heavy in your hand. It seems to be comprised of wood, smooth and twisted into a vaguely heart-like shape, adorned with glowing green runes. It vibrates softly in your hand, filled with life.

The body of the creature returns to being a harvesting node, and can be harvested five times, from the following table:

1d100+forestry

1-25: +1 mysterious wood
26-50: +3 mysterious wood
51-75: +5 mysterious wood
76-90: +8 mysterious wood
91-100: +10 mysterious wood

Following the map requires a roll of 1d100+cartography, and a roll of 50 will be sufficient to pass. You must pass five times, with each pass resulting in you finding a new landmark; a stream, a peculiarly shaped rock, etc. Once you succeed on your fifth roll, submit your rolls to the experience thread to be given the next part of the quest.

+2 beastmaster

Beastmaster is a combat skill, like any weapon skill. While using this skill, you will consume 1 unit of bait per round. Instead of doing damage, you will feed a piece of bait to the monster and will subtract that from a total equal to the enemy's total HP. Dealing any damage to the monster will undo all your progress and make the monster untameable. Once you have depleted that total to 0, you will have tamed the monster. Roll a loot roll as normal, and turn in your results to the experience thread. The stronger the monster, the stronger the resulting pet will be, which means that augmented monsters will yield stronger pets than regular monsters.

Your beastmaster skill will improve your monster's stats.

You are only allowed to have one pet at a time, and if you tame an additional pet, you will instead receive a of the monster, which can be used once you gain additional points in beastmaster.

Gloomweave Spiders are untameable, but you can still receive from them.

Boars are tameable, and you gain a +10 to all rolls if you use a mushroom as bait for that turn.

Bears are tameable, and you gain +10 to all rolls if you use raw boar meat as bait for that turn

Rabbits are tameable, and you can sell them for 150 gil apiece (hearts or otherwise) to the Beastmaster, or you can sacrifice them to gain more materials than you would ordinarily receive from a rabbit.

Deer are tameable, and will produce much more harvesting materials if sacrificed.

Dire Wolves are tameable, and you gain a +10 to all rolls if you use venison as bait for that turn.

Gloomweave Queens are untameable, but you can receive a from them, and, when combined with a you can produce a baby Gloomweave Queen.

At any time, a pet can be transformed into a , but a cannot be made into a pet again, so do so with care.

Beastmaster
The Beastmaster seems content now that his rabbits are safely contained once more. He smiles "Thank you for your help. So what brings you around here? Interested in learning how to tame animals? Well, most animals are easy; throw a little food their way and they'll do anything you say. But monsters can be a little trickier. Sometimes there's simply no way to tame a beast without the bond formed by birth.

In fact, I've been meaning to try something for a while now, and I think you can help me with it. All those Gloomweave Spiders have to come from somewhere, right? Well, they're born inside that Cave, and then they come out when they're ready. That means that their eggs are in there. If I could get my hands on those eggs, I could have an actual pet Gloomweave Spider! If you could bring me a Gloomweave egg, we could try and see if it works!

Please, if your adventures ever bring you to Gloomweave Cave, keep an eye out for those Eggs for me."
