I like to improvise for solos. It makes me feel good to have my own little part in a song not written by me, and it's fun to play something good and wild at the same time.

To the edge of infinity...
usually if I don't have a theme to work around i'll plan it, but if I have a definite theme I can usually make it up on the spot.
... an invisible reality.

I always do improvised solos, but I agree with Ash. You have some ideas on the backburner if you're ever stuck.

of course, you gotta have those trade mark licks!

Your "theme" is the chord changes. If you can't think of something on the spot off of the chord changes then........ cry

I don't pre-conceive them at all; if that was the case, then they would then become written solos......besides, it's more fun to improv =) I don't come up with licks and save them for later use either. I just play what I hear in my head, and it always comes out sounding great. I use a lot of arpeggios and chord tones in my improv as well, and I absolutely love to use the half-tone whole-tone diminished scale....

I have a solo I'd like to play but I only know it in my head, I haven't figured out the notes. So I would improvise.

When you have solos, do you usually think them over and practice the same thing over again until your next performance, or do you make up your solos on the spot? Myself, I think them up right as I'm playing them (that's why they're called improvised solos).

Opinions?

Improvised solos and just solos are different.

For me, when I have a solo it is usually 'pre-thought'. Obviously I think about the key, chord changes, and things like that. Not enough that I have to actually stop and think about it. But I do think about it.
I rarely already have a solo made up. In fact, the only time I have, is in cover bands, and for exams with AMEB.
I do think, however, that all great solos are pre-thought to an extent. Whether it be that they will base it off the head, or if thy will follow certain chord changes.

Having a solo in your head is a great start. A lot of good improvisers, would be able to sing what they are improvising as they play it. I find this extremely hard, but I think it is a worth while thing to be able to do.

Its a mix because it is pre-thought as too how you are going to build the solo, what you want to portray, any themes or motifs, how you want to build it, what the changes are, what scales you're going to use, what leading tones between changes, etc. However you only plan out the bare bones and from there change it substitute chords go out of key to build tension and shape it the way you want it to be that day. At least thats how I do it.

I practice soloing over the accompaniment, but I wouldn't say that my solos are memorized or pre-conceived. I tend to keep and use general licks I come up with during practice, but when performance time comes around they are generally on the spot.
