The two, oddly, stood, letting Elm bring the items, but when things started falling, JR swept forward, catching the pokeball, and plucking the precariously placed potion off as well. He tossed them to Trey, who's eyes widened as he lunged forward and fumbled to catch them, while Jer quickly took the items, organized them into his arms, and handed them off to the slightly flustered teen-- or at least, most of them. He kept a few for himself, before giving a nod. "Thank you, Professor Elm," he replied, turning and leaving, putting some of the empty pokeballs at his belt.
Trey glanced at him, before giving a quick hand signal-- sign language, for 'Thank you'. With that, he turned and strode out as well, tucking his items away, before curiously withdrawing the pokedex. How did this thing work, exactly...

Keegan’s heart was practically pounding in his ears as he slowly walked his way towards the laboratory in New Bark Town. He’d tried the entire time on the train ride over to not allow the anxiety to build before this meeting, but had ultimately failed miserably. All the convincing in the world didn’t make it any easier.
Carrigan couldn’t weasel his way out of his work to accompany him in this most important of moments; and while he certainly accepted that his older brother would make it up after the fact, he kind of hated that he wasn’t there. Support would’ve been nice; at least he had Alanna. The Pikachu couldn’t talk though or be a distracting wall for him between the individuals he had to talk to, which was what he needed.
Ugh. Keegan took a deep breath; it was fine. It was just a professor, a busy individual who wouldn’t want to waste time talking to him, right? He was just some runty kid… adult… thing person, getting a pokemon for a journey and stuff. Elm was apparently even an awkward guy himself so maybe he’d just throw that crap at Keegan and he could leave without more than five words. Right? Right? That’s what he was banking on and at this point he was right at the door. He reached up and froze, expression conflicted and looking ready to determine that he didn’t need to do this before Alanna gave his ear a little flick, frowning and giving a soft ‘chu’ as she recognized his attempts to back down.
"Nngh…," he grumbled, free hand unlatching from the strap of his camera bag to rub at his hair, narrowing a bright glare at the rodent. Maybe he should’ve left her behind for this… would’ve made it easier to weasel out. Damn. Taking one final breath to try and hold what little nerves he had together, Keegan opened the door and stepped into the lab.
Honestly it was like stepping into some old 1920s horror flick. He could tell that lights were flashing on the nearby machines, but what colors were beyond his comprehension. It was just shades of black, white and all the greys in between for him, which coupled with the quietness of the lab, produced an eerie vibe. Keegan took up a stance in the middle of the place and while he welcomed the lack of people, it intensified it as well; after all he couldn’t just… stand there. Maybe. Maybe? He shuffled a moment, looking around the place briefly while Alanna hopped from his shoulders to investigate for herself a bit. He took a breath and finally managed to speak; he’d be waiting forever if he didn’t.
". . . Hello?"

It'd been quiet as of late, with very few trainers coming in to inquire about a starter. But, within that inactivity Elm found himself the most productive, making some headway into a few projects, both occupational and personal, so he certainly wasn't complaining. So, it came as a surprise to the young professor when a voice called out, unfamiliar to him, and by surprise he meant shock -- resulting in the man nearly falling out of his seat. Thankfully, he managed to catch the back of his chair, and save himself from an awkward spill onto the floor. "J-just one second!" Elm called out, dangling from his seat. Two minutes later, and Professor Elm made his debut, much more composed than he'd been two minutes and five seconds ago, and offered the young man with the Pikachu a friendly smile. He reminded him of someone, but for the life of him he couldn't remember who exactly. Elm cleared his throat. "Ah, hello there. Are you a new trainer, perhaps?"
The hairs on the back of Keegan's neck stood on end as the sound of life suddenly sprung forth from the back of the laboratory. It almost sounded like someone had hit the floor in surprise and unfortunately, the dread began to build again.
Alanna perked up at the sight of the professor, giving him a pleasant greeting and a wave of her little paw to welcome him. Something that, clearly, Keegan wasn't going to do. Instead he stood there like a Deerling caught in some headlights, trying his best not to show as much. Instead he shifted, trying to fake a cool persona and failing miserably as he tried to find his voice.
"Ah . . . yeah," Keegan remarked, stomach sinking further as his voice cracked on that final syllable. Oh yeah, this was just going swimmingly. He stood there, staring blankly at really anything that wasn't the professor resulting in just the most awkward of silence that persisted for a disgusting few minutes.
Alanna's ears twitched and she glanced back at Keegan, skipping over and smacking his leg as though a gesture to snap out of whatever bubble he was trying to escape too. He jumped and snapped his attention back to the professor, awkwardly remembering that oh yeah, he was conversing with someone. s**t.
"I... uhm... I'd... like a Totodile. Uhm. Please?" Keegan stated, voice cracking at the ends of the sentence yet again as he tried to maintain his composure. Arceus, these minutes were feeling like hours.

Professor Elm gave a quiet smile, and even quieter chuckle, when the man's Pikachu waved at him, before returning the gesture. It seemed friendly! The trainer... not so much. Or rather, he wasn't the talkative type, for sure. He looked expectantly at his guest and waited for him to speak, and waited... and waited. When he finally did speak, it was only two words, and that was to confirm that he was, in fact, a new trainer. Which was good! But, he didn't offer anything else. "Uhm..." Elm scratched the top of his head, and pushed his glasses back up his nose. This individual... he was as socially adept as him, if not worse. When he finally did speak, with some 'light' encouragement from his Pikachu, the professor nodded his head. "Oh. Right, yes! A Totodile! That's a fine pokemon. Let me get it for you."
With a task given to him, Elm spurred into action, and made his way into the backroom to collect not just the Totodile, but a few other trainer essentials. When he returned, awkwardly juggling several items, he proudly presented the male with his items... by dropping a few of them onto the ground. "S-so sorry about that! Let me just..." Elm shoved a pokedex underneath his arm, rearranged a few of the potions in his hand, then bent down to scoop up the pokeballs he'd so carelessly dropped. "Heh... thankfully, these are the empty ones," he jested lightly, though inwardly he winced; you weren't supposed to be dropping those things, empty or not. "These are for you! A few pokeballs and potions to help get you started," he explained, and slowly handed said items over. "This is your Totodile's pokeball! Be careful with it, they're known to be a little... nippy. Playfully! Of course! Just... watch your fingers." Hopefully, he wasn't... scaring him off. "And last, but certainly not least, is your pokedex! It's vital to any trainer! It has the records of every last pokemon in existence, plus a whole lot more! You can find out more if you do a bit of, ah, exploring. I just need your name to register it to you, and then I can send you on your way!" Elm waited just long enough to hear the man's name, nodding his head along the way, and once done he presented Keegan with his pokedex. "Th-there you go! I hope you have a productive journey!"

Oi, the awkwardness that followed from the prolonged silence did not help Keegan’s situation in the slightest. The professor’s own awkwardness didn’t help the situation either, as comical as it was. The young man just shuffled in place, having finally gotten his request out despite the horrible cracking of his voice.
There was only a moment of relief as Elm’s attention shifted to collecting all the necessary necessities, but was short lived as the man returned and all but bumbled the starter gifts. Keegan instinctively jumped and nearly stomped on Alanna’s tail in response, shirking away from the professor and staring with a mixture of confusion and… terror? He really needed to get out of here. Still tense, he eased back to take some of the items offered, quickly shoving them into the spare space in his camera bag, not even looking at the professor as he explained, instead his head just robotically nodding along like he was listening.
He wasn’t really. No, he was swallowing down fear and wishing the man, as nice as he seemed, would just stop talking. He did briefly shift his gaze away from his case and shoving the goods away to look at the ball that contained his Totodile, looking just a bit at peace in that moment as he took it. Heh… nippy. He could handle that. Then of course came the pokedex and he took it from the professor gingerly; right he’d heard about these things. Best way to help the professors categorize and learn about the pokemon of the world. A nifty tool and now he could officially leave.
Which was really all he wanted.
". . . T-thanks." Keegan murmured, not even looking up at Elm, instead immediately stepping back to turn on his heels and immediately semi-bolt bolt for the door. Alanna blinked and gave a sigh of her own, once more waving good-bye to Elm in the steed of her failing trainer before quickly running after the young man before being left behind.

Today was the day that she would depart on her journey. She quickly got dressed and put up her hair, knowing it would get in her way. Her bag was packed carefully and double checked to make sure she had everything before she left. Maiko did eat with her parents before heading out for a while.
The journey was a bit tiring, but she wasn't going to let it get to her. She was going to travel across Johto and even the other regions. Once at Professor Elm's lab, she stopped and signed, looking at it. It just looked like a two story house to her. She then walked in, knocking to make sure she was heard. "Professor? My name is Makoto and I'm here for a Pokemon."
hello~ I know you don't appear to have any pokemon yet, but please remember that you will need to keep their information in your posts, and to keep any post counts you might do for movement, wild encounters, trainer battles, and items.
Elm looked up as a new trainer arrived, introducing herself as Makoto and asking for a pokemon. The socially awkward professor scrambled away from his desk to sheepishly greet the young girl, causing a few of his papers to fly from his desk. One of his assistants immediately chased down the papers to put them back. "H-hello there, Miss Makoto! I'm Professor Elm. Do you, by any chance, know which starter pokemon you would like to take with you?" he greeted her, asking if she already knew which pokemon she was here for. If she didn't, or wasn't sure, he'd be more than happy to show off the starter choices he had to offer.

Her smiled stretched into a frown as the papers flew off his desk and onto the floor. Before she could even help, the papers seemed to be already taken care of. "My apologies, Professor, didn't mean to startle you." Her choices were going to be Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile. Makoto then smacked her lips as she thought of her future companion and looked back up at him, "May I take Chikorita?" Meganium was gorgeous to Makoto and getting one someday was going to be a miracle.

o uo okay dokie thanks for the quote i had nearly forgotten. Sorry!
Professor Elm waved off the girls apology sheepishly. "Don't worry about that..." he told her. They then got to the reason she came by, and Elm smiled. "Chikorita is a spectacular choice! They have such a nice aroma to them, too! Oh! er, I'll be back in a moment." he replied, then excused himself to go grab her some supplies. After some shuffling about, Professor Elm returned with a pokedex, a pokeball, and a small bundle of supplies. "Here you are! Your very own Chikorita, a pokedex, and some items to help get you started!"

Makoto smiled once more and nodded as he walked away to get Chikorita. She held onto her bag and waited, thinking soon she would be out, getting closer to the thing she wanted to do. Once he came back with supplies and a Pokemon for her, she beamed, taking the items and her new companion. "Thank you, Professor Elm." Sje bowed lightly and exited.

Lucille was a big bag of nerves in a small teen body when she made it to the entrance of Professor Elm's Laboratory. She was nuzzled up against Samson, her stalwart service Arcanine, who carried his ward with little effort. He looked over his shoulder at her, awaiting an order. Lucille frowned, unsure on if she was making the right decision. It's not like she couldn't just go back home; her parents would forgive her for running away, right? They'd ground me til they died, then ten years after that, she thought. No, she had to follow through; she wanted to go on her adventure. Lucille Opal Myrth wasn't going home until she was proud of herself.
So, she tapped Samson on the neck tightly, which was her sign for "Kneel, please." Samson did so, and let Lucille slip off of his strong back, and caught her footing well enough. She motioned for Samson to stay, and he gave one bark of understanding, and stood at attention. Lucille smiled at Samson, and looked back towards the door of the the lab with pure determination. She took a deep breath, and stepped inside. Look out, Professor! Here comes Lucille Myrth! She pushed open the door, and headed inside...
...and almost walked into one of Professor Elm's aides. Lucille side-stepped just quick enough not to run into him, but not well enough not to get the man's attention. "Oh, hello, young lady! What can I do for you?" Lucille smiled weakly, and pointed at her throat before shaking her head. "Oh, do you need a throat lozenge?" The girl shook her head, and made signals with her hands. If the aide knew sign language, he would know she had said, I can't speak. I'm here to see the professor. Instead, the aide only stared on, looking confused. Lucille slapped her head with her hand, and rummaged in her messenger for a rectangular device. "Um, Miss? If you don't need anything, I'm very busy-"
"I'M MUTE. I'M HERE TO GET A POKEMON FROM THE PROFESSOR." The voice was loud, electronic, and monotone. The aide almost jumped out his skin when Lucille finally got her words out, and her face was already turning red when she turned it on. "Oh! Oh, um, sure, sure, I'll see if I can find him for you." The aide went off, further into the lab, and Lucille let out a sigh. Look out, Professor Elm...here comes Lucille, and dumb electrolarnyx...
A rather loud, unusual sound followed by one of his assistants finding him startled the professor from his studies at his desk in the back of the lab. "Wh-what in the world..." he muttered, then the assistant explained that there was a mute girl here to get her starter. "O-oh... I-i'll be right there, then." he told his assistant before scrambling about his desk. This was going to be strange to do - it wasn't often where he had to deal with a communications issue on top of his own clumsy awkwardness. He gathered up a pokedex, some supplies, and one of each of the starters.
"H-hello! I'm professor Elm. I heard you were here for a pokemon?" he asked, then fumbled awkwardly with the pokeballs containing the starters before releasing them each. "I have Chikorita, the grass type, Cyndaquil, the fire type, and Totodile, the water type. Y-you may pick whichever one you would like - they are all very fine choices!" he introduced them, hoping to make the process of choosing easier for the mute.

Lucille smiled and gave Professor Elm her undivided attention, trying her best not to get red with embarrassment over her electronic outburst. She hated having to use it, since it was so off-putting (it made it sound like she was a robot version of an old man), and she really didn't like being the center of attention because of it. Luckily, the professor was presenting three Pokemon for her to choose from, and her anxiousness was replace with excitement as she looked over them.
There was the Chikorita, who was exceptionally cute, with its leaf on its head and its stubby little legs. Lucille made an inaudible "Awwww!" As she crouched down to get a better look. And then there was the Cyndaquill, who was just as cute as the other, sleeping in a nice little ball. Lucille inched her hand far enough to pet it It's so warm! I could cuddle with Cyndaquil and never get cold on my adventure!...but would Samson get jealous, I wonder? The thought of Samson starting to bully her for not getting enough attention crossed her mind for a moment, but she quickly dismissed it. And then, there was the last, the Water-type Totodile, who merely stared up at Lucille as her gaze rested upon it. Lucille waved at the little gator, and offered her hand to it for a nice pet. Instead, the Totodile clamped down on her hand completely. The mute didn't scream, naturally, but she did make a pained face of surprise and confusion as she shot up, the gator still firmly caught on her arm. OWWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW- Wait! This pain...and this excitement! The thrill that only comes from knowing that there's danger around every corner! She stopped flailing, and gently got Totodile to let go of her hand. It had mostly indentations, but there were two spots where it had drawn blood. Adventures are synonymous with the struggle of man, right? Skinned knees and hand bites and whatever else comes is all part of the experience! This little Totodile has given me my first injury on my journey!
Lucille hugged the Totodile firmly, which it wasn't expecting at all. The gator fidgeted for a moment, but allowed the cuddle before chomping onto her covered arm. Lucille only winced for a moment, but her eyes of determination and her cocksure smile were not perturbed. She looked the Professor right in the eye, and said, well, nothing, of course. But, she did point at the Totodile, and then give an affirmative nod and a thumbs up.
Elm quietly watched as the girl greeted each of the starters in her own way. It was only when she got to the totodile did he break the silence. "O-oh dear- Are y-you alright?!? I-i have some bandages somewhere - Totodile tend to bite things they are curious of." Elm sputtered, immediately moving away to find some bandages. He was rather confused though, as she didn't seem upset at all by being bit, actually looking like the Totodile was her starter choice. "H-huh? You are choosing Totodile? I-if you're sure, it will make a fine partner... er... after it gets past it's biting phase..." he muttered, pushing up his glasses before handing over the totodile's ball to the girl, as well as some supplies for her journey, a pokedex, and some spare bandages that he had.
