Augh, another miss! Johan hissed in frustration, but resisted the urge to struggle and exhaust himself.

Damage Done: 0 String HP: 1/10 [ 1][ 2][ 3] Staring at his first plate of bacon he's ever had since his mother refused to let him or his sister ever eat the stuff was at Amityville's mess hall. And he stared at it with curiosity and nervousness. It was meat. It was food. Next thing he knew, he was getting into a fighting match over it because it projected a familiar hellhound's voice and the next thing he knew he was calling it names and shoveling it into his mouth, chomping down on it angrily. The hellhound panted, gritting his teeth as his eyes glared at the Alice before him. He would break free and she would see how feral he can be. While he was demon, he behaved much like a monster. The demon inside of him bit, snarled, clawed, and howled inside of him, the creature calling out to him from inside. He wanted to let it out, he wanted to let it loose. The consequences outweighed the risks. At least the risks he actually cared about at this very moment. But he needed a quick breath, to gather himself before pushing through again.

So close! Johan forced himself to hang limply and let the swinging motion stop. He had to concentrate!

Damage Done: 5 String HP: -4/10 [ 1][ 2][ 3][ 4] He stood there in his room, a towel over his shoulder and a caddy in his hand. He was about to head to the shower when he reached for the door. It was her hand that was there. "Mother, I loved you, but you never let me. You never let me show you, you squashed it every time I felt anything for you, you were cruel and cold!" He growled at the visage of his mother who stood there with her arms across her chest, her face a frown and her eyes looking down at him. He could not raise a finger to her but he knew she could hear him.
With a thundering roar, he cut himself free, falling down to his feet, bent at the knee with one hand on the ground to brace himself before he launched himself up and forward.

Taking careful aim, Johan once again drew the rune of slashing. And this time it hit! But the sudden release sent him swinging again, more violently than before. He struggled to keep his composure, but he was steadily turning green.

Jack, did he ever want to be standing on solid ground again! He hastily tried to cast at the runes again, but missed. He tried to school himself to calmness, to just hang and let the swinging stop.

"Let me go, Alice!" he growled at the puppet angrily.

The rune once again tore at the strings, freeing up one hand enough that he could grasp at the strings. Able to hold on to something, he felt his stomach subside and breathed a sigh of relief.

Finally a solid hit! The rune cut through an entire swath of the strings. Including the one Johan had been clinging to.
When the violent swinging stopped, Johan was dangling upside down.
"AUGH!"

He missed again, and Johan reminded himself that if he didn't manage to cut through these last strings, someone in the future would find his remains dangling here.
Ignoring his stomach, he redoubled his efforts.

A familiar feeling surged through Hanna. This was it, this was the fighting burst that cheered her. Even in the insanity of the island when she had no memory and no idea what was happening, the thing that kept her moving was this surge, this drive. Adrenaline rippled in her, and she knew -- knew it before her blade struck the higher mass of tangled web -- that she would be free.
Hanna was falling... and then she wasn't there.
A vision played out before her, one that had happened so recently and offered her so much peace.
It had been after a training session. Hanna felt like a failure, was terrified her reawakening had been an accident, and felt like the worst Death Hunter to have ever existed. Alone, she padded out to the green to at least get a breath of fresh air and some peace of mind. Her knuckles were cracked and bloody from pushing herself a bit too far in some drills. It was stupid. If she pushed too hard, she would push herself right back into a pod.
Plopping down on the ground, Hanna let out a deep sigh. She refused to cry, not now, but she wanted to go back in time, to erase whatever it was that had put her back into cold storage. When she first awoke, Hanna planned to distinguish herself as a true Hunter. To be a leader in Death. To... well, to impress Caelius, if that was at all possible. If anyone could do it, Hanna swore to herself SHE would be the one.
And then she was frozen again. Failure.
His approach had been so silent that Hanna did not even hear it until he was standing beside her. Black hair, blazing eyes, glasses -- holy s**t, it was Professor Caelius. "Uh, sir, uh," she stammered, struggling to get to her feet.
He had watched her carefully as she dusted off dirt on her pants. "I was just getting ready to log my training in my--" One look stopped her words.
"Hanna," he said. "It was not a mistake that you came back from the pod. We need you here. Once you were strong enough, we have always known that you had to come back. Death needs you. Stop questioning it."
The man who she desperately wanted to impress gave her a curt head nod and then walked off in the other direction without a word. It had been an interaction that lasted maybe 30 seconds, but it had given her more hope than she had had in as long as she could remember.
And it had been a damn hallucination.
At the time, Hanna had stupidly assumed that word had gotten around about her being back. She had assumed that Caelius would (1) obviously remember her and (2) think she was special enough for a private reassurance.
What chapped her a** the most was that she should've known better.
Her feet hit the floor and she rolled, one half of the Lady clattering hard against the ground. "Stupid," she cursed to herself. "So stupid." Both hands gripped the ground for an instant, and then Hanna was back on her feet. She assumed a defensive position, twin blades at attention in her palms. Her calluses were gone, but she would get them back.
None of this stopped the embarrassment that blossomed on her face, her cheeks turning bright crimson. <******** you for playing with my brain!" Hanna shouted in Alice's direction.

This was impossible! His runes kept flying wildly off into the ether, and all of his attempts to free himself from this position were nauseating him. Johan frantically grasped at any thought to distract himself from his stomach. The first one that came to mind was what he was going to do to that infernal puppet when he freed himself finally.
