SOUTH

He liked to think he was finally honing his danger sense. Unfortunately, having a vague uneasiness wasn't enough to stir him into action this time. He awoke, panicked, ro darkness, and his hands met reistance from every angle. He was scrabbling at the smooth glass of the cylinder even before he could see it. It was only when the lights came on and he could see the others that his clawing slowed.

"No," he stuttered, leaning heavily against the glass. This shouldn't be happening. Not to him. The water was rising slowly around them, seeping into the bottom of the cylinder even as the water level reached chest height. Song was silent - utterly silent - and the psychic flourish that usually summoned her did nothing now. It was only now that he finally noticed the weight around his wrist, with angry red runes unlike any he'd seen before.

His eyes slowly traveled back up to where the water had now plunged everything in darkness again. Frigid water lapped at his feet, his ankles, higher still. The rules of the game were meaningless to him. He would drown. That was the point, wasn't it?

He took a deep breath as the cylinder rose, and the water immediately swept him away, slashing him against scattered ice and down one of the tunnels.

Otto woke suddenly, the whole portal fiasco feeling more like a vivid dream. But he wasn't in bed, nor even a couch. He was somewhere else. His gut clenched tightly in fear as he took in his surroundings. Something worse, he noticed, was Tenya's silence. He gripped the pendant around his neck tightly, her totem, and willed her voice to come. But nothing. His own thoughts echo'd hollow in his mind.

This frightened him more than he liked. He was alone. Completely alone. Utterly.

Shakily, he stood. His blue eyes focusing as lights began to flash. Numbers counted down. Something happening. Too many things at once. Water. Otto's mind began to short circuit, unable to come to a decision on what to do first. What was happening? Why? Was it O?

And then he nearly drowned. Otto was a weak swimmer to begin with. It was no contest against the current, as Otto's body was at it's mercy. He had no idea where he was going, no power to change his route. All he could do was hold his breath and pray he lived.

Ami wasn't surprised to find the portal fall to pieces. Honestly she should have predicted this. Why she'd had a little bit of blind faith in Mark was an absolute mystery. For the official record, she was rolling her eyes as the bright light encompassed them all and whisked them away.

She didn't welcome the awkward position she awoke in. Cramped, stuffed into some sort of tube. Had they finally shipped her into the ocean to die?

Seeing as panicking wouldn't help, she attempted to stand up slowly. Firstly she noted it was dark, but she could feel the smooth sides of the tube; it appeared there was enough room to stand up in. Secondly she noticed was a bright, angry red leaking from her wrist. At first glance, she thought she might be bleeding, but after the momentary shock faded, she realized it was a light. A bracelet of some kind.

Thirdly, she noticed Junpei was silent. He would've normally been buzzing with curiosity, panic and worry in her mind right about now. So her weapon had probably been muted somehow- maybe the material of the tube? Ami found herself actually a bit grouchy over it. She'd gone a year without Junpei before- she didn't exactly welcome it happening again. She quite liked having a means of defense, thank you.

A countdown began, and bright, blinding lights erupted her eye sockets. A second later, other hunters were revealed- she could see Otto floating somewhere near her ... Where had Lex ended up? She supposed it didn't matter.

Someone spoke about the injustices of hunters. So had they been captured by Halloween again? Or Perhaps these were the O hunters she'd been hearing about through the rumor mill. Either way, once the water reached the top of her cylinder, she began swimming.

A small body was a small body. Ami was absolutely no match for the currents. She managed to wiggle her way through one of the tunnels, but it wasn't by choice- the water took her there.

Chel had been busy shoving a ketchup chip up Dory's nose (or at least trying to) to notice the portals go haywire. One moment she was with friends, the next she was alone in the dark.

"Oy! Let me outta here!" she shouted as the voice began to countdown. She'd woken up part way through the first number (Chel was a heavier sleeper okay?) only to find herself crammed in a tiny tube with a weird red bracelet.

"C'mon Tensy! Busy me out of here!" She flicked her wrist in the usual motion, but he didn't appear. He didn't say anything, actually. "What, are you mad at me or something? What the ******** dude?" Silence continued to greet her.

Unfortunately, she'd spent so much of her time yelling at her bow that she hadn't heard the long speech made by the voice. All she saw were other hunters (s**t was Nevada in there?!) and lots of water. Water that was rising. Four tunnels with red lights ... That was where she needed to head right? In any video game, exits were lit up, and water filling a room spelled trouble. It probably wasn't going to stop at the tip of her tube.

She noticed a few other hunters dive in, and followed suit. It wasn't a graceful dive, and it landed her right next to an iceberg, which she promptly crashed into. Her body went limp with the impact, but managed to get swept into one of the exits.

[South Exit]

One second there was talk about inflicting harm upon Mark for his capitolist behavior, the next the ground was shaking and everything had gone dark. When Peyton awoke it was to darkness and quiet, and she blinked into the gloom before stretching a hand out only to touch glass. "What the ********?" The tips of her fingers slid to the side, up, down, all around her. She was sealed inside. It made her tense, shoulders hunching up as she pressed herself into the side of the cylinder, trying like hell not to think about how small of a place she was trapped inside and not doing a very great job.

It was a temporary relief when the lights came up, at least until she spotted the others trapped in their own glass prisons. Pale eyes snapped across to Taym, to Solomon, To Roland and Dory and Lucky. She stared until the water started to fill up the room, not entirely aware of the voice counting down until it sounded inside her cylinder, giving her instructions, filling her with dread.

The water reached the top and the cylinders opened, flooding with frigid water that brought a startled scream from the Sun before she sucked in a breath and kicked off, aiming for one of the exits. She didn't expect currents though, or the sharp bite of ice as it slashed into her side. It hurt, more then it should have, and she was started to see the tint of blood darkening the water at her side before she was sucked through one of the exits.

She thought she saw a flash of green zip past her, and she reached out automatically, grabbing for Lucky's ankle before he'd gotten to far. Delicate fingers closed around the hem of his pant leg, and she clung to it for dear life.

His first thought was: "Oh for ******** sake, can't we ever have anything nice?"

The second was to reach out for Fiona, which was manifestly impossible and induced a strange near-panic. The silence was not a thing he had expected and the loss was abrupt and more painful than he would have expected, if he'd ever thought to formulate the scenario in his head.

The third was a sudden sharp memory of his crushed throat desperate for air and it was that one that finally shoved his sluggish brain into gear. He swam instinctively and silently, and unlike Peyton, was barely aware of his surroundings.

Not without taking some damage, he found himself drawn by the water into the South exit.

With a mouthful of chips that was enough to make her cheeks poke out, Abbi turned to look up at Jack.
"Yo brah!" She greeted with an attempt at a smile, but it was kind of squished because chips and her words were muffled also because of the chips. With a wiggle the girl gulped down her swallow of food and bunny hopped closer to Jack.
"Entourage? Whatchyou talkin' bout?" She laughed at herself and shrugged. "Guess you're early in that case. Maybe I just need you to be my solo entourage today?" A dopey look was given to him as Abbi curled her hands under her chin to bat her lashes at the taller man. Obviously she was joking for she dropped it a second later to pull out the beer and pop it open for a drink. Just as she had taken the first taste (gosh this stuff was awful!), Jack spoke again and she frowned at him.
"First of all, I only took one. Secondly, you're not my chaperone. Or if you are, I want to petition for a substitute." The mention of recording was ignored since he seemed more intent on texting, so in retaliation the teen pulled out her own phone.

(¬、¬) Come rescue me from Jack the Giant Butt Face. And by rescue I mean come hang out with us on the beach. A vacation is being raffled away so there's that too! ಥ⌣ಥ

The rolling came after that, which was disappointing only because she hadn't won, but it was more pressing that soon after the runes glowed black. Edging closer to Jack, the teen began to worry because they probably weren't supposed to do that. Unfortunately there was no time to react because what came next was black.
Thankfully, waking up still followed the blackness and Abbi woke on the count of seven. That rang in her head as she shuffled to standing, a hand pressing against the glass for support. Uhh... Had she read about something like this before?
Startled into clarity she noticed the exits, the rising water and the voice lecturing her. The hand on the glass pulled back to shake the bracelet around her thin wrist, confused as to where that had come from or what it did.
"Uhhh what's a serpent got to do with victors? Did anyone volun--" But then the cylinder she was in began to move up rapidly and Abbi had the wherewithal to gasp deeply before being shoved up into the water. Swimming was not really something the teen had ever been good at, so this was all the more difficult with how cold the water was and that giant ice block headed straight for her.
It crashed against her and Abbi managed to keep her mouth mostly closed when she shrieked, momentarily too distracted with the pain to try swimming. At least the current was strong enough to pull her through one of the tunnels...

Rin threw her arms up victoriously, about to proclaim her company on this prize; she was giving you a very smug grin Melvin.

That grin melted into a frown as something else happened. She should have known.

Nothing on the island was ever that easy.

Still, she rolled with it and her cylinder puttered to the east exit.

[ SOUTH EXIT ]

The only reason he had come was because of the "free booze" notice.

That, and it was a distraction, something to keep Ian's mind off of the only thing that had been on his mind nearly 24/7 for days now. And it was not as though he expected things to just fall apart around him; life moved on, that was how it went here.

People died, and the rest of the world continued.

What was not supposed to happen, however, was waking up in a cylinder and expected to suddenly swim for his life. Ian stood there in silence, his face a mask, showing no expression whatsoever as the water rose. He shifted his feet, the bracelet feeling heavy on his wrist -

- and then he was in the water.

It was icy around him; something slid against his arm, sharp and stinging, and Ian twisted, trying to see something, anything in the black depths, but there was nothing, not yet. He felt slightly dizzy, Ian pushing himself further, no sound except for the water within his ears, and something was pulling him in the opposite direction he'd been in, his legs kicking out behind him.

Cold -

[ WEST EXIT ]

Gale had remained silent for the better part of the gathering, choosing instead to observe instead of interact. He hadn't been interested in the alcohol aspect, but the rest had sounded somewhat interesting, if not a little curious. So he'd gone, and hoped that it wouldn't be too much of a hassle.

Turned out he should have stayed home after all.

If he'd been afraid of swimming or of water, it would have been a very bad thing, but as it was, Gale was mostly just trying to keep air inside of his lungs. He kicked out furiously, twisting in the icy water, and attempted to swim one direction, though the current had decided otherwise. Pushing his arms out in a sort of butterfly stroke, Gale curved around, his head feeling oddly devoid of Jinhai's voice.

He tried again.

Jinhai?

There was nothing. Gale made a frustrated noise inside of his head and swam around, a little garble escaping in a flurry of bubbles as he felt himself being pulled to the side. Out of the corner of his vision he saw a few colors flashing beside him here and there, but for the most part he was alone, at least for now.

HEADING SOUTH

Roland was enjoying his beer, even if Taym and Peyton didn't join him in his toast he was going to enjoy his beer anyway. Taym and Bix both had a point, but Taym's was better, they did fight giant monsters so they would drink and Roland would make a face like a scrunched up old hag when he mocked them with a duck face of worry. Spoil sport.

Speaking of spoil sports he had just been announced as a portal winner. He was already trying to pull out his phone flipping through trying to find information on a good place to visit. He wasn't watching Mark or the other hunters at the moment, he was too busy enjoying the idea of a trip off island.

That was when spoil sporting reached a new high. There was a flash, a tube, a voice making threats. It sounded like more horsemen babble. The last time someone spoke down to them like that who wasn't Caelius had been the crazy horsemen leader, Medea wasn't it? He stuffed his phone away hoping it was as waterproof as they implied it was.

< Sylvia? >

There was silence in his head, and this was when the panic really started to kick in. Scrambling as the water released him, he started to flail in the water trying to find his way. Shards of ice clipped his flesh and sent him tumbling towards the southern exit...

[ South Exit!]

Putting down his chips, Jason watched Mark draw out the names of those who were lucky enough to go through the portal. It sounded as if something was going on, but he didn't think it was dangerous...

Oh, how he hated being wrong.

When he noticed the portal blaze red he shouted in alarm, only to falter as the island shook.

The next thing he began aware of, was being in darkness. Again he cried out in alarm, the inability to see what was going on frightening him to the point of trying to break out of his confinement, which appeared to be a glass cylinder not unlike the ones contained in the labs. Soon the area lit up, but Jason wasn't sure he liked what he saw. The others were trapped in cylinders like his own, and the room was quickly filling with water. His gaze then shot upward as a voice spoke to them. He hadn't a clue who it was, but he was starting to be reminded of the incident with the 'O' organization. It was then he realized he couldn't hear Zanthvos, nor could he summon his weapon. Just his luck.

When the cylinder finally released him, Jason grasped at the smooth edges in vain as the water pulled him out of the area, swallowing him hole. It was freezing cold, and the powerful currently made it almost impossible to swim against. Waving his arms about he tried to move in a direction, flinching as a piece of ice cut at his arm before he was sucked down one of the tunnels.

He had gotten the text from Abbi, and had arrived shortly afterwards, having already been outside anyways and the beach itself not far away from where he had currently been. Apparently he hadn't gotten there in time to put his name in the boxes, but that didn't really matter to him, because before he'd had a chance to figure out where Abbi and Jack were, his eyes had already honed in on the beer and chips nearby.

Okay even the beer was pretty much ignored because were those ketchup ******** yes~

He had only just managed to dip his hand into the bowl to snatch out a few when something began to happen, however, something that didn't look altogether right and----

Suddenly he was in a pod, his arm weighed down by a cuff. Suddenly there were no light growls in the back of his mind from his weapon, a sound he had grown accustomed to, and without it he felt..almost lost, alone, and oddly empty.

Trynt? He concentrated hard on contacting his weapon. Come on you sack of scales, answer me!

No response. His jaw clenched, his eyes darting around nervously as suddenly a countdown began overhead, as water rose up from beneath and a voice sounded out somewhere above. What the ******** hell was this? He was reminded of a certain movie he'd seen once with a girl he'd been dating, one that had insisted that it was good.

He had judged it terrible to watch, and had a feeling it was going to be even more terrible to live, but at least living was on the forefront of his mind as he was shot up out of the tube and into the water, where he was forced to swim or die. Something cut past him in the icy cold water, getting him in the shoulder, stinging.

He had no idea where he was going, only that he needed to stay above the surface, as the water swept him away.

[ Stormy @ North Exit ]

Stormy was, as per usual, only there to take what she could and leave. It was impossible for her to miss out on getting more booze of course, but it was the siren call that lead to her eventual doom. Before she could try to call out to Gale, everything went dark.

And then there was water.

This was not the sand in the Sahara, this was not a personal moment of triumph where she could overcome her fears and fight for what she wanted. No, this was cold, dark water, and she forgot what meager skills she had in swimming. The trainee thrashed as she was released into the current, mentally screaming for Thane and receiving nothing but silence.

For a moment, maybe, maybe, there was color ahead, and Stormy kicked as hard as she could--

--and an iceberg slammed into her side without warning. Losing air, she was thrown headlong wherever the current took her, numb hands reaching for the new wound that pumped out hot fresh blood--

[ Jack @ South Exit ]

He remembered that Deus never did parties well. He should've just gotten out while he still could. <******** really.

Jack slammed his fist on the cylinder even as water filled it up, defiant to the end. Yet even while his body fought for breath, all his mind could center on was the serpent imagery, the victims and the victors, the circle that ate itself. And soon everything would begin to follow that dynamic. Soon, everyone would be exposed.

Assuming they lived.

Jack also couldn't help but think about the shitty security Deus had to let so many get kidnapped in plain sight, judging from the dark figures of bodies in the water he could barely make out. He'd certainly mention that on his next mission report, if he survived.

Ice shards dug into his limbs as the giant swam to the nearest exit.
