Heart of Ravenclaw, Second Year
TRANSFIGURATION
Transfiguration is the branch of magic of changing an object's form and appearance, though is limited. The five exceptions are known as Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration: You cannot create money, food, love, information, or life out of nothing. There are multiple branches within this branch of magic, including Animagus, Animate to Inanimate Transfiguration (and vice versa), Conjuration, Cross-Species Transfiguration, Human Transfiguration, Untransfiguration, and Metamorphmagus.

Amelia walked in early, having not been distracted by any new possibilities of exploration on the way to class. She gave a small wave to the teacher as she eagerly took a seat, just behind the front row. Pulling out a pen as well as a notebook that already contained her earlier notes, Ammy looked up at the board. Trying to ignore the wonder why they used chalk still, instead of dry erase--a difficult thing as her trio of sneezes echoed in the fairly empty room--she read the directions. She'd entered feeling confident. Ollivander had said her wand would be good for Transfiguration. While she was waiting to arrive at Hogwarts she had read the first few chapters of the book, studying them to the point of memorization. Still, she felt sure the professor didn't want a copy from the book. Frowning to herself, she picked up her pen and began to write:What is Transfiguration? Transfiguration is the magic of changing one thing into another. Though almost any can be changed, the laws of physics still exist: nothing can be formed without a source. Though I've only purposefully moved the toy yesterday, I have transformed hair and skin color. She paused a minute, biting her lip to not laugh at the memory. Her third grade teacher had yelled at her, she wasn't even sure she remembered what it was about. Something she was up to probably. In response, she'd called her jealous, and as she sensed the emotion rise, her hair color and skin had turned this sickly color of green. Thankfully, she couldn't get in trouble for that, though her father still had to remind her not to mess with such foolishness.
Shaking her head, she looked down at her paper. Well, those short lines were what she knew. She faintly remembered something about Gap's law of physics. But everything she could remember was covered under the phrase, nothing could be formed without a source. She didn't like it, but she handed it in anyway. She wasn't about to use the book if the teacher didn't want her to.First Year Ravenclaw

Annette smiled to see that the two Ravenclaw girls were taking their work seriously. "I would like to thank you girls for your your eagerness to get work done, and for your honesty in your answers. Heart, I would like to award you 5 house points for being the first to hand in your work, and for actually taking the time to study up on transfiguration. And thank you very much, Amelia for all of your honesty. You didn't know much, and that's why I've decided to scrap the grading for this assignment and base it off of the students attempt to do the work."
Annette graded the students work and decided to head off to the headmistresses office to tell her about more house points.

Amelia blushed until her ears turned pink. She'd never had a teacher blatantly tell her she didn't know much. The very thought almost brought tears to her eyes. Inconspicuously she lowered, her head, pressing her thumb and forefinger on the bridge of her nose. ((It works though I don't know enough anatomy to know if it actually pinches the tear ducts or what.)) After a few seconds of slight pain, her tears were gone. Swallowing carefully, she nodded and asked in a quiet voice, "Tomorrow, may I send in a copy after I've studied everything using my book?" She felt terrible how poorly she'd truly done--her grade didn't matter much to her.

After thinking about what she had originally said, Annette put a hand up to her forehead. She felt like an idiot. "Ameila, I did not mean it like that. You are a very bright girl, and I actually don't expect you to know very much about transfiguration yet. I don't expect anyone of your age to know much about it, because you are only a first year, and others are either new to the subject, like you, or haven't taken it seriously because the other teacher didn't take it seriously. Not to offend anyone, but I'm pretty sure people like... Ginelle, or Nathaniel or Sabrina don't know very much either." She paused to think for a moment. Now she felt really bad, because she did offend the girl, and she really didn't want to hurt someones feelings. She could get kicked out of teaching for that. After thinking about Ravenclaw for a moment, she said "You were put into Ravenclaw because the sorting hat believes that is where you are meant to be. You know it too. What I meant to say is that no one in this school has learned very much about transfiguration, because this class hasn't been taken very seriously yet. I apologize if what I said sounded offending, but I didn't want you to take it that way. I'm praising you for your honesty, and I really appreciate that you wrote down what you knew with out looking in a book or asking someone." Annette looked at Amelia's sentences and smiled. "If it is okay, I would actually rather that you didn't re-do the assignment, because it helps me know what I need to teach." Annette thought for a moment, and she came up with a good idea. "How about you go read up about the subject a little more, and I want you to tell me what we should learn about next, transfiguration-related, of course."

'You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve, and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart;' . Thinking . . Speaking . . Action . Ginelle looked at the new assignment, and sighed. She didn't know much about transfiguration, because she was a girl who lived in a muggle society for a lot of her life. She didn't want to get a poor mark, she decided to explain to her teacher about living in a muggle world, and what she remembered reading over the summer about the subject.Ginelle Transfiguration is the magical process which transforms an object into another object. No matter can be created without a source, so that is where the Gamp Laws came in. Physics and chemistry did still exist in magic, so all of transfiguration is very logical. When I grew up, I do remember suspiciously that the color of our American Flag back in the United States changed colors during the pledge in my first grade class, but I do not remember, other than in this class, doing any other transfiguration. I lived with a muggle family, and my mother was a muggle. My Father was a wizard, but he died before I was ever old enough to understand anything, so magic to me is very limited, because I do not know a lot.
Ginelle handed in her paper just as the professor was talking about her. She let the teacher finish before saying "Actually, I do not know a lot because I grew in a muggle family. My mother couldn't tell me anything about transfiguration because she was a muggle, and my father is dead as of 9 years ago." Ginelle was a bit offended that the teacher was almost calling her stupid. But, she left the paper on the professors desk and walked out of the classroom, tears in her eyes.

Staring at the teacher with an almost condescending look in her eye (for a ten year old) she listened to her ramble on. Each word was just digging her deeper into the hole of dung she'd made. Her eyes widened as she continued to comment on the ignorance of the other students before she couldn't help snapping, "You should remember ignorance is fixable. Whether you're in Ravenclaw or-" She felt the girl's pain at the insult as well, "Gryfinndor. Now, excuse me." Anger was within her and she didn't want to do anything about it. She would have accepted the slip up, except when it went past her to others. Being dumb within a group was not much of a comfort. She stood, not waiting for the teachers response and also left the room, calling for the girl who'd exited before. "Ginelle?" Her anger faded as the insult to both of them overwhelmed her. "Do this. It helps." She placed pressure on the bone of her nose, squeezing it as she looked at the ceiling. It took her a few seconds to compose herself, but she stayed a little longer to give Ginelle time too.

Professor Annette Soul-Heart The Transfiguration Teacher •○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○••○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•○•
The teacher called out after the two girls "I wasn't calling you ignorant! Crap.." She dropped her head on her desk and sighed. She couldn't win. She really did want her students to succeed, and now that she just made them feel like they were an idiot, she had to fix it some how. She thought that giving them house points would have offended them more, and trying to talk to them was a waste of time, because she didn't know how to communicate with her students very well. Standing up, she went to follow the girls out, but then thought that she needed to let the girls breathe. There had to be a way to tell the two girls she was sorry.
--
The professor, later that night, wrote a letter to each of the girls and sent the letter to the girls in a paper flower. Each flower contained about the same letter, and this was what Amelia's letter said:
The Professor Dear Amelia, As a teacher, I never wanted to offend you, or anyone else either. Is there any way we can fix this? I want each of my students to succeed, and there is no way that can happen with the way we have started out this year. I apologize for offending you and Ginelle. I was never trying to call you ignorant. You are one of the least ignorant people I have ever met, Ginelle being another non-ignorant student. None of my students are ignorant, and you should know that. Please come back to my room so we can talk this out. -Professor Soul-Heart.

((As a note, I'm really not mad, I just thought it would be more interesting if she was; at least until the other students come. I'm really sorry if I upset you.
I'm not sure if you want me to send you an owl (like from the owlery,) reply here or what....though I'll probably pretend to get the flower from the common room. ))

((You can reply here. That's fine. =] And Rosewood, you should definitely join the class!)) Annette also sent out a similar letter to Ginelle:
--
The Professor Dear Ginelle, I'm sorry to have offended you. I really would like it if we could start out fresh. I know you are not an idiot, and I now realize your lack of resources make it difficult to know a lot about the subject. To be honest though, you are exactly where I want you to be. You know the basics, and you are new to the subject. Please come back to the class room so we can fix this whole mess? Thank you. -Professor Soul-Heart

Ginelle stopped when she heard her name get called out. She turned around to Amelia and looked away. It wasn't that she felt insulted very much, it was just the fact that she didn't get the chance to meet her dad. She knew who he was, but he died before she was really old enough to know him. Ginelle smiled and did what Amelia told her to do. "Thanks. Sorry... It's just... wish my dad could have taught me more. I don't even really remember him." She sighed and pinched her eyes together, along with the pressure on the bone of her nose. It actually did help, along with a few deep breaths. She laughed a little, then said "Look at how stupid I look for crying." She laughed a little again, and then took another deep breath. Then, her hands dropped. "Thanks.. for that. It did help."

Amelia rested a hand upon her back gently, nodding. ”Couldn’t imagine it. Do you still have your mother? I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than nothing, right?” She knew how to keep tears from coming; her empathic abilities would cause tears almost constantly, she’d learned to at least physically fight it. ”You look fine; don’t worry about that. Besides, we don’t have to go back today. We did the work, so that’s all that matters.” She stepped ahead of her, ”Is there someplace I can walk with you?” She’s ten; it was a friendly notion and that’s all. She just didn’t want the teacher to come out the door and yell at them.
