Kouyo nervously stepped into the hobby store and looked about for the models section. He had walked past this place a few times since had noticed it from the window of the smoothie shop, but today was the first time the High Priest had entered. Whenever he had peered in through the windows before, there seemed to be about as many visitors as the used bookstore got every day, but today, the hobby shop was more crowded.
Trying to keep his anxiety under control and ignore the other humans as well as he could without being rude, Kouyo edged past a table that featured a tiny vehicle made up of several cars linked together moving around on its own on a track in a circle. A boy and a girl behind him rummaged through bins of colorful plastic creatures that hopped or crawled when wound up. Most of the humans filled the aisle of models, though, and that was where Kouyo was headed.
The store had been boasting of the sale on models today for about a week, and the Porcelain High Priest decided that perhaps it was about time he got himself some new things to work on for when his pretzels puzzles was complete. Shopping always scared him, but he had finally decided that the sale was a good reason to try to overcome that fear.
Carefully, he edged up and down the aisle, peering around the other customers where he had to in order to see what all was available. Most of the things came in kits, but Kouyo figured that would be alright, since he was not sure he would be able to find the materials here in Gaia that he used back at home to construct his little models and toys. Perhaps the kits might help him learn a bit more about his temporary home, too.
... And then at the end of the aisle, the priest saw boxes that appeared to contain three-dimensional puzzles of buildings, and he immediately started eagerly scanning the ones available~
Ako ran into the shop ahead of Akram and her mother, radiating glee and excitement. She paused for a moment just inside to look around and take everything in, then headed straight for a set of bins filled with all manner of plain plastic animals, right next to the ones with the wind-up toys.
Just one, Chourou gently reminded her daughter with a laugh as she followed Akram inside. Then she told the girl that she would be just a little bit down the next aisle, and not to leave the store without her.
The merchant prince stepped down the aisle of models with the Porcelain Knight following, scanning them over.
"Any idea what your other daughter might like?" he asked, figuring that the answer would include neither tanks nor warplanes and moving past those.
The Knight of Bukoku concealed the fact that she did not really know for sure, and joined the human man in studying the ones on the shelves. Perhaps she would have been able to make a better guess at what Uki liked if the choices were things of the Golden World, but, confronted by so many Gaian vehicles and objects, Chourou was really at a loss.
"What sorts of things do Gaian girls like?" she inquired after a moment, figuring she could at least try to make conversation while she considered the numerous models.
"Usually little houses for dolls," Akram began, trying hard to remember what his younger sisters played with. "Cute little... how do you call them, plush animals. Puzzles, maybe. Or needlepoint pictures." He pointed to indicate that they should perhaps move to the next aisle over. "Puzzles are on sale today, as well...."
Kouyo looked up from where he crouched, pawing through the puzzles, as a large human with a red cloth hat brushed past him, and cowered slightly, surprised by his size.
... And then the priest gave off a sheepish feeling as Dame Chourou passed him as well. He offered polite greetings nonetheless, and stood, clutching the puzzles he planned to purchase to his chest.
"Oh, hello, little bird Kouyo," the Knight exclaimed, giving off a feeling of pleasant surprise. She noted the boxes in his arms, and projected curiosity but not judgment. "I am here for toys for my daughters, so they do not get bored here in Gaia." Has Kouyo found anything interesting?
Also, "This is Master Akram," she told him, indicating the human, who smiled briefly. She then turned to Akram and gestured to Kouyo, introducing him as well.
Glancing up at the tall human, Kouyo offered polite greetings and a small shy smile in reply.
The priest admitted that he had not been in the store very long, but tells Dame that he found puzzles enjoyable, and was excited to see that there were three-dimensional ones. All of them were apparently famous Gaian buildings; Kouyo handed one of the ones he held to Chourou to examine.
"You like puzzles and models, as well, Kouyo?" Akram inquired, glancing over Chourou's shoulder to look at the one he had given her. "I have made a few models, myself. Since I am buying toys for the girls, as well, I can also get you something, if you would like?"
"Master is too generous," Kouyo respectfully insisted as the human moved back into the aisle of models to scan the shelves. ... He was being treated like a child? The priest tried to keep his embarrassment hidden.
But, um, yes, he did enjoy building models. It was a good way to pass time up in his tower, and now he had less time to fill, but he still required some way to fill it.
Smiling faintly, Chourou returned the box to Kouyo, then poked about at the others on the shelf. She assured the priest that she thought the Gaian puzzles and models looked quite entertaining to her, as well, and did not think him childish. There were other Gaian adults shopping here now, as well, yes? She would be most interested in seeing the High Priest's completed work when all of his puzzles are built.
... Ah, 'Hanging Gardens' sounded like something Uki would hopefully enjoy. It had no real plants, but Chourou thought the building looked interesting. The Knight picked the box up off of the shelf, turning it over in her hands to look at the pictures on the back.
Ako rejoined her mother, then, beaming happily as she showed off the colorful plastic bird she had selected. Look at how many different colors it had on its wings! The girl made a little soft whooshing sound, turning in a circle to let the toy fly around a little.
Then she made it land on Kouyo's wrist, and grinned up at him.
The priest smiled back at the girl and held his hand steady for her bird.
Dame and her daughter were lovely. Kouyo had nearly forgotten his worry at shopping with them around. Both would be welcome to join him sometime, perhaps to help him build his puzzle buildings? Dame Chourou's other daughter as well, and her husband. ... And also Akram. He was quite pleased to meet her family's human friend.
"Here, if you are going to be in Gaia building models, you should have one of these," Akram told Kouyo, holding out a box labeled "1937 Ford" and featuring a picture of a car. "And all the pieces are blank, so you can paint it your favorite color."
Ako's bird flew back to Mommy when Akram returned, because it was still kind of shy around the big human.
... Chourou had to admit that she rather liked the look of the car. Why had she not yet seen one like that driving about in Gaia?
"They do not make them anymore," the merchant explained, sounding perhaps a touch disappointed. Then he turned back to Kouyo and told him, "Tell me when you are ready to start building your car, and I will help you buy paints for it."
Kouyo nodded slowly, glancing wide-eyed between the tall human and the box he had just given him. Then he bowed deeply in thanks. "I will be sure to summon you, Master Akram."
"I think I will pick another model for myself as well, and then I will be finished shopping," the High Priest then told the others. He had seen some interesting wooden ones earlier that he wanted to take another look at. "If, um" - he squirmed a bit at the thought of having so much company - "You would like to join me for a few more minutes?"
Little red and blue and green birdy was getting hungry~
The Knight of Bukoku rested a hand on top of Ako's head, gently assuring her that they were nearly done shopping and could get some dinner at home as she told Kouyo, "Certainly."

Asahi Kumoru Kouyo lets himself into the house quietly, hoping that, if Setsushi is about, the Knight will not scold him too harshly for returning from work nearly two hours later than he usually did. He had only been shopping, though, and not very far from the book store, so with any luck no one had been worried about him. Holding his bag of purchases close and trying not to make much physical noise, at least, the High Priest softly announces to whomever happenes to be home (if anyone) that he is back now. Then he leaves the bag over at the end of the table with his half-finished puzzle, and goes to seek out the teapot. Lynod And as he enters the kitchen, he would find Tenkyuu just placing the teapot on the stove. The tired, French Fry-smelling Dragon Knight raises a hand in greeting before she bows her head faintly, obviously using a mixture of informality and formality to welcome the High Priest. Tenkyuu was just putting on some tea. Would High Priest Kouyo care for some? If so, what flavor shall he take? Tenkyuu has made great pains to get a variety--Gaia is a wonderful world for one who loves tea. Asahi Kumoru As the lady addresses him, Kouyo jumps slightly, nearly dropping his bag in surprise; somehow he had missed her being there in the kitchen when he first came in. He greets her quite formally in reply, and then tells Tenkyuu that he would like some tea. And that Dame may select the tea for him if she wishes? Little Kouyo has hardly started to make a dent in all the types of tea Gaia apparently has to offer, and therefore is not really sure yet which he prefers. Perhaps something calming and herbal, though, since he is apparently a bit tense already? sweatdrop
... Standing back from the kitchen area for a moment, the priest brushes his hands over his clothes a little to see how much dust is still in them from his own day at work. Kouyo suspects that he is nearly done with the cleaning part of the job, though, as he seems to be returning home a bit less dusty himself every day. Lynod Tenkyuu quirks a faint smile at the High Priest as she turns the stove on and moves to the cabinets, searching for the perfect tea for the "little bird." Her hand grazes the box of teas before she leans forward on her tippy-toes, easily pulling the box down then. As she moves back to the stove, Tenkyuu's eyes fall upon the High Priest and his clothing. How odd, the positions they have taken. Tenkyuu was once a Dragon Knight and Kouyo was a High Priest. Now here they are, in a different land, with low-level jobs. What a difference environment can make for individuals, muses the elder. Asahi Kumoru Deciding that he is not dirty enough to require an immediate shower, the priest edges towards the other Porcelain, gently inquiring if she requires help with anything?
... And also agreeing with her musings. It is certainly nothing like the outside world he had long wished to rejoin, this Gaia. Back when he still lived in his tower in the Golden World, the attendants only ever prepared one type of tea for him. It came from a part of the Empire far beyond what he could see from his high windows, of course, but drinking the same tea every day, Kouyo felt that he could tell what the weather had been like where the leaves were grown by their taste. And now here he was, finally free, and, naturally, quite overwhelmed.
Though, at least there are so many interesting and wonderful things in this new place. All manner of tools to make work easier and - he squirms a little, suddenly feeling very childish before the elder woman, and glances back at his shopping bag - numerous toys to keep him occupied when he is not working. Lynod Tenkyuu allows a faint smile to fall along her lips as she begins to procure the tea cups and their respective saucers. Tenkyuu is glad that the High Priest has been able to escape his captivity. Perhaps he will be able to experience a variety of new things that will leave him wiser and happier? Tenkyuu sets the saucers, with cups, beside the stove before she peers at Kouyo's shopping bag. Tenkyuu must express her interest in the toys that the High Priest might have procured--might she what caught his eye? Asahi Kumoru ... Well, this little Kouyo must admit that he has done a poor job overall thus far at finding things that make him happier, but he supposes he is at least wiser for it. He settles down in one of the chairs near his puzzle, and slides over a few of the stray pieces to make room for two at the end of the table not occupied by the half-completed jigsaw.
Then he leans over to fetch his shopping bag, blushing faintly as he takes his purchases out one by one. Three more jigsaws, but they are three-dimensional instead of just flat - they are also meant to be models of buildings famous to Gaians, apparently. One is a small temple covered in gold; one is a large cathedral, which Kouyo is fairly sure is like a different type of Gaian temple; and one is a large library, but the box containing that puzzle says that it was destroyed a long time ago. He also got a wooden model kit of the skeleton of a Gaian animal called a "dinosaur", and another model kit of a car. The priest does not mention that the last item had been a gift to him from a human, for fear that Setsushi would find out and think that Kouyo had been getting into trouble again.
The High Priest fidgets a little, then starts to put the boxes back into the large shopping bag. He should probably be spending his free time practicing his calligraphy or somesuch, rather than playing with toys all the time, though.
He then gently inquires how Dame Tenkyuu has been spending her free time in Gaia? And wonders if his aunt has found anything that made her happier that she might be able to recommend? If Dame does not mind little Kouyo addressing her with such familiarity, he quickly adds; they are blood relatives but he hardly knows her.... Lynod Tenkyuu raises a hand faintly to dismiss Kouyo's worries, her hand moving to faintly settle on one of the boxes as she inspects it. Tenkyuu must admit that, if such toys existed in Gaia, she would not be as well-versed in anything; Tenkyuu's time would have been devoured by such playthings. Tenkyuu's eyes shift to Kouyo and she regards him for a few moments before nodding. Tenkyuu has no problem with such a title, though it does make her feel older than she feels. Her smile broadens as she grips the box and hands it to Kouyo. One day, in their spare time, the two of them will have to complete one of the puzzles together--it would be a welcome break from learning Gaian script and watching dramas, admits the elder. Asahi Kumoru Smiling faintly, the High Priest takes the box, and makes sure that it and the others are out of the way for now. He is quiet for a moment, then tells her that he would enjoy spending time working on a puzzle with her. When would be a good day for Dame, so that Kouyo can tell Master Whitestone in advance when he plans to take a day off?
He then projects a soft curiosity, wondering where she has been watching dramas? Does she have a tee-vee at her workplace? ... And where is Dame working, by the way? Kouyo thinks he recognizes the smell of food from her clothing, but cannot quite recall what in particular it is. Lynod Tenkyuu watches Kouyo as her hand moves to her chin, seeming to consider the days. Tenkyuu does not wish to be a burden to her nephew. Rather, Tenkyuu would happily work on the puzzle whenever the both of them are free. As for the dramas, well... Tenkyuu's eyes touch the floor as a guilty smile coats her face. The fastfood restaurant she works at, Burgerholic, has a small breakroom with a television. When she is able to procure a break, Tenkyuu watches the scripted dramas. She laughs faintly as she shakes her head--it is her mortal weakness. Of course, Tenkyuu could see Kouyo being engaged with them as well. Perhaps, when their household budget grows, they can gain a small tee-vee. Asahi Kumoru Kouyo will find a day when he can take off, then. Master Whitestone more or less allows him to set his own schedule, but the priest has been working every day for at least a few hours in an effort to finish his cleaning-and-organizing job at the used bookstore as soon as he can. He is nearly done with the cleaning part, so perhaps when he has completed all of the dusting and vacuuming, he can take a few days' break.
And he must admit he is curious about these dramas; Kouyo has heard numerous other Gaians mention various things on the tee-vee, too. He has seen them a few times in other places, but never really gotten the chance to watch one at length. The High Priest wonders how they function, though many of the machines he has encountered seem similarly baffling.
He is quiet for a moment, resting his hands on the table and studying his fingers before his gaze trails off to the side, to the half-completed jigsaw puzzle.
Which reminds Kouyo, he purchased some real pretzels a few days before, because he wondered what they actually taste like. He is not sure how well they will go with the tea, but he would be happy to share some with Dame if she wishes to join him in the adventure of tasting them. Kouyo stands and goes to the pantry to get the bag, and fumbles to open it as he returns to the table. Lynod Tenkyuu watches Kouyo retreat to the cabinets and she watches him silently, her hand moving to prop up her chin for a few moments. She studies the High Priest, silently noting his mannerisms, his inflection, and the fact he truly appears to be a lonely figure. She slowly rises from her seat and moves towards Kouyo, her hand placing two dollars in front of him. Tenkyuu offers Kouyo a faint smile--while Kouyo is kind enough to offer the pretzels, Tenkyuu knows how hard money is to come by. As for the dramas, well, Tenkyuu must say that many are mindless. Many plots are simple, their characters two-dimensional, and yet... There is something unseemly and interesting about them. Tenkyuu will look into a tee-vee for them in the future if Kouyo would be willing to partly pay for it? Asahi Kumoru Kouyo looks to at Tenkyuu for a moment, then down at the money she offers, projecting a slight confusion. He slowly moves to accept the bills, but at the same time gently projects that there is no real need - the pretzels were not expensive, and he has been working for a few months already, and had the spare change saved up. After a moment, he shyly and politely adds that the pleasant conversation has been more than enough to repay him.
And if Dame Tenkyuu enjoys the dramas, Kouyo would certainly be willing to try watching them sometime. Perhaps the High Priest needs something simple and mindless in his life for a change. He would be happy to put his money towards the purchase of a tee-vee, as well. Does Dame know how much one would cost? Lynod Tenkyuu still cannot allow him to bear the burden of cost; she has already inconvenienced him and Setsushi due to her presence, and would like to avoid further pains. Tenkyuu moves away from the counter and back towards the table, her eyes peeking over her shoulder at Kouyo. Tenkyuu admits that she does not know, but she will attempt to find a cheap version. Tenkyuu laughs faintly, her head shaking from side-to-side. "Let us just hope that we do not become cooch-potah-tahs as the Gaians say," remarks the elder as she takes a seat again at the table. Asahi Kumoru As he returns to fumbling with the pretzel bag, Kouyo assures Dame that she has not been a problem to him at all.
... And then the bag tears suddenly, sending several pretzels flying and leaving the priest momentarily surprised. He then offers the torn bag to Tenkyuu, and scurries to retrieve the loose ones from the floor.
Kouyo supposes he will keep an eye out if he can for a tee-vee store. Perhaps he can try asking Master Whitestone if the human knows of a place. The High Priest then wonders if Dame knows if the tee-vee requires a wall-wire to function? If not, then perhaps when they return to the Golden World, they can bring a tee-vee with them.
He is not familiar with whatever Gaian phrase his aunt uses, though, but laughs softly as he inquires what it means. Lynod Tenkyuu blinks as the pretzels scatter and is left holding the bag as Kouyo begins cleaning. She smiles faintly before she gingerly sets the bag on the table and slowly kneels, her fingers beginning to scoop up the pretzels. As they clean, Tenkyuu ponders on the idea of bringing a television back to the Golden World. Surely, what ramifications might that have for their world? It might be safer to leave it--they might be targeted for having such an arcane device. Or perhaps Tenkyuu is too paranoid? She shifts her eyes to Kouyo, seeming to pause at his question as she ponders how to explain it. Tenkyuu.... believes that some humans who watch tee-vee become lazy. "Cooch-potah-tah" is a term used to describe such behavior. Of course, Tenkyuu is only a beginner when it comes to the varied and interesting knowledge of Gaia--she could clearly be wrong. Asahi Kumoru ... Perhaps she is right, and they should leave it behind. They might save some of their countrymen from the lazy fate she describes, as well. But Kouyo admits that he would at least like to take one apart if he ever has the chance, to see what is inside. Still, though, having little stories to watch whenever he likes sounds like a luxury that might have made the slower days in his tower a bit more bearable. Perhaps he can at least keep his Gaian models and puzzles to bring home.
Kouyo eats a few of the scattered pretzels as he retrieves them, and finds them tasty. They are quite salty, but the flavor is good. And he assures Dame that he can find all of the runaways himself - she need not crawl around on the floor to help him. Lynod Why should Tenkyuu allow Kouyo to be the only one who gets to engage in a little indignity? Tenkyuu is all for sharing in such a wonderful, degrading experience. She smiles playfully as her hands finish scooping up the assorted pretzels. Tenkyuu would like to know about Kouyo's time in the tower despite the fact it might seem unseemly. Tenkyuu has watched Kouyo, and he seems to have experienced many hardships in his seclusion; Tenkyuu would like to act as an ear for him. Asahi Kumoru Kouyo sits back for a moment on his heels, popping another pretzel into his mouth as he just stares at the elder Knight; he seems shyly amused at her attitude towards the task of pretzel collection, but entirely at a loss as to how to respond to it. He settles on politely thanking Dame for the assistance, though these projections are still touched with uncertainty.
When Tenkyuu inquires about his time as High Priest, however, he falls silent, looking contemplative as he allows the noisy sound of the pretzels he is chewing to fill his head. When he extends his mind to his aunt again, he smiles sadly as he tells her that it is not something he wishes to think about at the moment. He appreciates her offer, though, and perhaps might be more willing to speak on the subject with her sometime later, when he is not tired from a day of work and shopping. Lynod Tenkyuu smiles briefly before shaking her head, her hand moving to take one of the pretzels. Kouyo needs not to apologize for something that seems to wear away at him so. Rather, Tenkyuu would rather know about Kouyo's happier times then. What does the High Priest think of Gaia? Tenkyuu slips her hand into the bag of pretzels and pops one into her mouth. She chews thoughtfully, a finger tapping against her chin as she contemplates the taste. Her attitude towards the snackfood is displayed by her greedy hand moving to grab another and slip it into her mouth. A sigh of happiness leaves Tenkyuu as she enjoys the small pleasure. Asahi Kumoru As he said, Kouyo finds Gaia an interesting place, but also intimidating. Moreso than the Golden World had seemed when he lived in his tower. In rather vague terms, he tells Dame that he feels he has learned a lot already, though the new world has been less than gentle towards the little bird just testing his wings.
Some thought that the High Priest keeps hidden seems to trouble him, and he stands slowly, leaving the pretzels that he picked off of the floor but has not yet eaten in a small pile on the corner of the table. And then, attempting to seem casual about it, Kouyo walks to the nearest wall and turns, pacing slowly to the opposite wall of the house with carefully measured steps. As he does so, he inquires what Dame Tenkyuu thinks of Gaia, perhaps a bit distractedly. Lynod As Kouyo rises and begins to move, his eyes seeming to study the floor, Tenkyuu's eyes follow him. She is silent for long moments as she watches him before she pushes herself up and joins him. Though her steps are far more casual, Tenkyuu moves side-by-side with the High Priest as he seems to analyze the floor. As they move, Tenkyuu casually glances to the High Priest. Gaia finds it to be strange. She is an old woman, and she has had to adjust to many things. Tenkyuu would have to find that she finds the notion of democracy to be the most disconcerting of ideas; can the masses truly lead in a successful fashion? Tenkyuu ponders that the political world would be more stable with the administration of a just Empress. Asahi Kumoru The other Porcelain joins Kouyo and he shuts his eyes momentarily, his thoughts becoming at once more withdrawn even as the tension in his body obviously reflects Kouyo's suddenly growing anxiety. He slows to a stop, takes a moment to collect his thoughts, then looks to her with an almost pleading expression as he tells her softly and with a wavering voice, "Please stop following me".
His hands clasped together in hopes that his aunt will not see them shaking, Kouyo then very gently suggests that perhaps he should take his shower and rest. The High Priest is very sorry he cannot make for more interesting conversation on... was it the politics of Gaia Dame had brought up just a moment before. Little Kouyo must apologize for his divided attention but there is something... he must... finish... and then he requires some time for meditation and a brief sleep before supper. Lynod Despite the initial surprise at Kouyo's emotional state, Tenkyuu's eyes soften before she clasps her hands and bows her head low to Kouyo. She remains thus for several moments before lifting her head and smiling at the High Priest. Tenkyuu meant no harm--she merely wished to move with Kouyo as they spoke, rather than being at the side. Tenkyuu should have known better than to follow after the High Priest. "I will take my leave of you, Kouyo," says Tenkyuu as she moves to begin collecting her cup and saucer, "And I thank you for the pret-zehls that you fed me. They were most delicious." Tenkyuu turns, letting warmth flow off of her and caress the High Priest as she moves to wash her glass. Asahi Kumoru The priest moves to the screen separating the public half of Setsushi's home from the private half, and vents a bit of his anxiety as frustration, nudging the screen a few times to try to get it to stand closer to perpendicular with the front wall of the house. As he does so, he takes a deep breath and assures Dame Tenkyuu that she need not apologize; Kouyo should be making his apologies to her for this- this stupid little routine.
He hurriedly begins again, measuring the house from the screen to the side wall, and from the front to the back, with his careful steps that are smaller than his normal walking stride. As he checks, then double-checks, then triple-checks each measurement by doubling back, Kouyo seems to relax somewhat. And when he is finished, the priest fetches his tea from the table, thanking Dame again as he drinks it and then takes the empty cup to the sink.
... Kouyo of Water thinks he will require a long shower. If Dame needs use of the restroom before the priest takes it over for a time, she can go ahead, and Kouyo will finish washing the cups for her? Lynod Tenkyuu pours water into her cup before letting the diluted tea flow down the sink. Her hand moves to grip a cloth, one of those paper towels as Setsushi calls them, before wiping at the inside of the cup. As she listens to Kouyo's words, Tenkyuu shakes her head faintly. Tenkyuu is sure that living in his tower posed different hardships on Kouyo than those able to walk freely. Perhaps Kouyo adapted this to keep his mind busy inside of the tower? Tenkyuu does not know his reasons, but she is sure that they were well-founded. When Kouyo joins her at the sink, Tenkyuu gingerly shakes her head and reaches out to take his cup. "I will clean them," says Tenkyuu, "Go take your shower and relax." Asahi Kumoru Kouyo nods slowly and relinquishes control of his teacup, rubbing his eyes with one hand. In some ways, he wishes he had remained in his tower, where he knows the size of every room already. Then he thanks Dame Tenkyuu again for the tea and the company, and assures her that he will feel better after bathing as he shuffles off to the shower.

Kouyo had been feeling surprisingly good for the last day or so, finishing quite a bit of cleaning at work and actually feeling content enough to really relax. Setsushi's home had taken on the feeling of a safe place for him once again, and he had not really realized until then just how deeply the Knight had shaken him. His anxiety in Setushi's presence thus diminished, the High Priest slept better and felt stronger in the mornings.
He still performed his various rituals, though Kouyo at least felt less compelled to measure the floor in Setsushi's presence. It was not because he was still terrified of being stalked by the Knight while doing so, either - Kouyo found himself able to take great comfort in the memory of Setsushi's assertion that he could hold up the house on his own.
Though the Dragon Knight's insistence that Kouyo ask the Name directly to tell him where he could find his wife still weighed heavily upon his mind, the High Priest continued to shy away from doing so. The possible answers he could conceive frightened him - she had told him when she left him that, without his 'name', she would see him again in the underworld. Though the priest felt better, he was not sure he could deal with her death. The very thought that she could already lie dead, dead by his inability to help her, was a persistent terror to him, one of the things that kept him pacing out the dimensions of Setsushi's home and counting all of his puzzle pieces.
The High Priest knew he would have to ask that question eventually, however. He sort of wanted to wait until Dame Tenkyuu was no longer staying, so there would be no risk of learning anything from Kouyo if he should awaken screaming or broken from his dreams. Additionally, the High Priest wished for Setsushi to be there for him, but first, Kouyo felt he had to re-earn the Knight's friendship - the priest knew it would be a difficult thing to ask of him.
But for now, he could still do something, in spite of his fear. There was something the priest had been wondering, since meeting Jilan and Miss Tsubei, and hearing about Miss Nusumu from her curious guardian Miss Sneaky. They all had come, somehow, from Karyasihu to Gaia. Jilan seemed unwilling to talk about the place, and Kouyo had also gathered that, beyond that, they had all been brought to Gaia somehow at a very young age. And so the High Priest prayed to ask the Name what it could show him of the Dragonlamp all of the old-but-young Porcelain knew, or knew but could not recall....
... He awoke the next morning early, because he knew he had somewhere to be. Someone to meet. Something to discuss... that he could not quite recall. But that was alright; the world in general still felt hazy to him, and he figured it would all become clear to him as he got himself ready, had more time to wake up.
His room was small but comfortable, outfitted with electric lights that sensed his movements and came on to greet him as soon as he stepped into the bathroom. He scrubbed his face with water from the tap, then grabbed a comb to put his hair in order. He could not quite see his reflection in the mirror over the sink; the surface of the glass was dingy like the small frosted window in the shower that looked outside. But he could see himself well enough to get his part straight....
Once he was dressed, he moved out to the small table in the kitchen and found his breakfast was waiting for him. It had been prepared recently enough that it was still warm, as well. He would not have it any other way. He took his time eating, because he had been smart enough to leave himself ample time to get ready. When he was finished, he left the plates where they were; dishes would be taken care of, so there was obviously no need to trouble himself before his meeting. And then he grabbed his jacket and set out.
Regardless of whether or not the haze of sleep had actually cleared from his mind, the air outside more than made up for it. He could scarcely see a few blocks, but he paid it no real mind - he was born here and would die here, and if the condition of the air moved the latter date sooner, there was nothing really he could do about it. He skirted the persistent puddles to avoid dirtying his shoes; the water neither moved nor quite seemed to dry, but if nothing else, that meant that it was easy for him to remember where all of the wet spots were. The colored lamps that lit the smoggy air cheered him up as they usually did, though, and he did not mind the walk in spite of the crowds.
As he reached the street corner where he was to meet the woman with whom he had an appointment, he saw her approaching and opened his mouth to call out a greeting over the low noise of the other various pedestrians, but his voice was overshadowed by her admonition.
"I can't believe what you're doing," she scolded, gesturing towards him. He looked down at himself - what? A stain on his coat? ... No, she was pointing past him. He turned, cursing silently to himself. Had she told him not to bring his Porcelain along, and he had been stupid enough to forget? He took another breath to curtly tell the tiny woman, dressed in her prettiest with her best false-gold collar for public appearance, to return home right away--
--And Kouyo realized he recognized the human woman's voice. He turned back to Ranko- ... No, it was Tenran. Everything around him began to become more crystal-clear, until he could nearly see every mote of dirt and swirl of fog in the air nearby. The priest stepped to the side, backing up against the slick and dirty brick facade of the nearest building, looking back and forth between the human and the Porcelain, unsure of how to respond.
Settling for reaching out to his own kind first, he extended his mind to the pretty Porcelain, who remained standing where she was, hands clasped and eyes lowered. She looked up with a smile when he hesitantly called for her attention, however, and asked him what he needs? Kouyo stared at her, and she stared cheerily back, seeming to anticipate his command with eagerness.
Open-mouthed, he looked back to Tenran, who fixed him with an unhappy stare as she crossed her arms. "Is this better than last time?" she asked.
The air was growing lighter, easier to see through, though Kouyo was now beginning to feel like he was having trouble breathing it. He attempted to ask Tenran why she was here, in his dream, but she seemed unable to hear him. Or perhaps unwilling, by the look in her eye as she half-turned away. The High Priest looked from her unfriendly posture to the Porcelain's solicitous grin, framed in ruffles and lace....
And then, with a surprised gasp, Kouyo found himself awake again.

Kouyo bristled and glanced back over his shoulder as he heard Kumoru murmuring from the doorway of the storage room. The priest was both surprised and relieved to see that the necromancer had brought Xiao Huo with him, though, and was urging the child to join him.
Xiao Huo glanced warily at Kouyo, clutching his dolls in one hand and the human's sleeve in the other. He sniffled a little and projected a quiet, shy fear.
"I wanted to surprise you with him," Kumoru told the older Porcelain with a faint smile. "But...." he trailed off, glancing down at the boy, then up at Kouyo again. Then he gestured subtly for Kouyo to remove his mask.
"This little guy has been to the doctor a few too many times recently, and I think you worry him a little with the mask on." He crouched beside Xiao Huo, watching the priest as he rested one hand gently on the child's shoulder.
After placing the books he had been holding back into their proper cardboard box, the High Priest took his mask off and immediately held a sleeve to his face in anticipation of a sneeze. Fortunately, it did not come; the storage room was worlds cleaner than it had been when Kouyo had started his work there, and he probably no longer really needed to wear the mask.
Turning back to face the doorway, and trying to suppress panic at the necromancer standing in it, he carefully knelt on the concrete and focused on privately encouraging Xiao Huo to join him.
Somewhat reassured, Xiao Huo toddled closer to the High Priest, glanced back at Kumoru, and then climbed over a few boxes to cling to Kouyo.
Smiling gently, the priest sent reassuring and friendly feelings to the child - Setsushi's suggestion that Kouyo eventually take in children of his own to raise into good, kind priests was one that he found he liked. However...
"Why so often to the doctor?" he asked, looking back up at Kumoru with far more concern for Xiao Huo than suspicion for the human.
"We found out he has an allergy to milk," the necromancer told Kouyo, stepping into the storage room. He leaned one shoulder against one of the shelves and pulled his reading glasses down his nose a bit to see better over them.
"I imagine his parents must have known and were doing something about it before he came here, too, because the little one is terrified of doctors." His tone was dispassionate, but there was a slight crease in his brow that betrayed his sympathy for the boy.
Xiao Huo gave off a worried feeling, not fully understanding what the adults were talking about, but having a good idea. He looked thinner than he had when he arrived, likely from how he had tried to avoid eating as much as possible for fear of being taken to the doctor when he found something that really upset his tummy.
The little explorer had also been sick recently, too. And missing his new big brother Jilan. One of Xiao Huo's dolls slipped from his arms as he reached up to wipe his still-slightly-runny nose on his sleeve.
"He is alright now, yes?" Kouyo leaned around Xiao Huo, to pick up his dropped toy.
Kumoru nodded. "I have medication for him to take now, which he absolutely hates, but I think he'll take the pills if it means he does not have to see the doctor again. And they also gave me a list of foods he should stay away from, and things he should be careful eating, if you want to take a copy of that to keep at Setsushi's house for him."
The priest nodded, projecting his thanks that Kumoru had been taking care of the child. "How long may he stay with us?" he inquired, feeling perhaps a bit upset that he had to be asking the human.
Crossing his arms, the mage glanced upwards and considered for a moment. Then he replied, "As long as you like for now, I guess." He shrugged a little. "With Jilan gone in the Silver World, he has seemed kind of lonely. He still goes out with Lucretia and seems to have a blast pretending he's a Sorcerer or whatever goes through his little imagination, but I think he really wants to be around other Porcelain."
Xiao Huo wanted Mommy, he clarified. And Daddy, of course. And... maybe even his great-aunt, too, at this point. He took his doll back from Kouyo and bowed a little, thanking him clumsily but politely.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of Kumoru's mouth, then faded as he fixed Kouyo with his stern blue gaze. "Well, High Priest Kouyo is ready to help you get back to your parents now, so you don't need to worry," he told the boy, the gentleness of his voice not matching his eyes at all.
Kouyo fidgeted under Kumoru's stare and glanced away from him, instead opting to focus his attention on the Porcelain child. "Ready to do whatever my people need of me," he replied, and did his best to project a feeling of comfort and stability, to show Xiao Huo that he truly meant it.

Struggling again with the pain of desire for his wife, Kouyo closed his eyes and tried to remember her again as he attempted sleep - the good things, such as her pretty face and hair and the vanilla perfume she always wore.... Though he had hoped he had committed every detail of Ranko to memory, though, the High Priest found that Tenran's uncannily similar features came to mind more easily, and he was no longer completely certain of the exact scent of Ranko's perfume....
Kouyo squirmed onto his back on the sofa, draping one arm over his eyes and placing his other hand over the hurt in his chest. He could always just do as Setsushi had suggested, asking directly where she was and how he could get to her, but the Knight was already sleeping, and the priest did not wish to wake his friend - either on purpose to keep an eye on him while he asked his questions, or later, accidentally, should Kouyo awaken weeping or screaming from whatever the Name may show him. He drew a shuddering breath, trying not to start crying even now as he tried to think of something else of consequence he might be able to ask.
And the High Priest recalled that, when Ranko left him, she had asked for his "name", but he had distinctly felt that she had done so before. When he struggled to remember the first time she had made that request, the priest found that he could not remember that any better than the shoes she had worn the day he met her. He moved his arm to rest against his forehead instead, and peered upwards at the ceiling for a few minutes. It seemed like something important to know - not just when, but the circumstances for the question, as well. Perhaps he was too hasty before, too fearful, and had assumed too quickly that Ranko had asked for his precious Name specifically - maybe she had meant something else? Her diction in the Porcelain language had been strange, as though his people lacked the exact word.
And so Kouyo sat up and closed his eyes, folding his hands and taking a deep breath to relax. Not what he was supposed to be asking, but it was an important question nonetheless. When had she first asked for his name? And had she mentioned why? The High Priest did his best to keep suspicion and worry from his mind - after all he was her husband, and should be doing his best to love and trust her....
When he found himself in his dream, Ranko was there, seated uncomfortably close on the cushions on the floor and playing with her hair. Kouyo's cheeks were warm with a blush, and he stared at the toes of her dark blue slippers instead of at the rest of her. As he hesitantly ventured to raises his eyes, the priest studied the human woman's body carefully and found her... somehow more delicate than he remembered her, and wearing a longer robe-dress than usual. Was this quite a memory? It felt somehow unfamiliar, but perhaps this meant it was instead some other deeper message.
Kouyo could nearly feel her breath on his cheek as she spoke, and he lowered his eyes again, overcome with the shyness of his younger self.
She told him of marriage where she came from, how the woman takes her husband's name, and how this brought her into his clan, under his protection and power. Having his name made her helpless and vulnerable no longer.
... Kouyo of Two Years Prior was content to just listen to her voice, but Kouyo Who is Dreaming was not; he struggled to figure out more of Ranko's meaning, but of course it was exceedingly difficult since the human did not project.
After a second, though, delicate, bashful Ranko asked Kouyo what marriage is like among his own kind. And Kouyo Who is Dreaming took control then, attempting to be subtle about it, and told her of the ceremony where a man's parents bring him to his new wife. And then, unable to keep the blush from his cheeks, he glanced away from her, from her beautiful doll-like form, and briefly described in vague and poetic terms how the intimacy between the new couple forms the true bond between them, between their hearts and minds.
But he desired to know more of human custom where Ranko was from. Is there only a sort of legal protection behind a wife taking a husband's name? Or is there a deeper spiritual significance like the mate-bond of Porcelain? She teases him for his stupidity and naivete so often, little Kouyo wishes to be sure he understands her fully....
Something about the dream changes then, once the Kouyo of that moment attempts to interact more directly with the Ranko of the dream. She listened to his explanation with the adoring attention that seemed more characteristic of Kouyo of Two Years Prior himself. And then she answers the High Priest by telling him that the protection is economic and social as well as physical, so... something like "legal" protection, but also more symbolic and affective. And she would also gain the power of her husband's bloodline, his glory and strength-
- though, she notes with sudden melancholy that his name would never truly be her own. Her sons would share his blood in a way that she could not, and there was always the danger that some rift could make her naked and vulnerable, or lost, or perhaps even abandoned.
Kouyo gently inquired to what sort of rift she referred? A mere separation of spacial distance, which he imagined put a strain on the love between any two beings? Or something more terrible...?
Ranko replied with talk of distance. Of spacial distance, yes, but distance between hearts, as well, and betrayal. Or just being forgotten, or tossed away, like something spent, withered, and now useless with no name to protect her, no armor or weapons as she is surrounded on all sides by enemies.
The feel of the vision changed again then, but before he could properly consider the new overall feel of it, the Ranko before him became enraged, screaming but... somehow lacking the energy to really put force into it.
"Or not having one's sacrifices repaid!" she shouted-- and then dissolved into passionate, almost childish tears.
The High Priest just stared at her for a moment. And then... even though it was only a dream, she was only a dream, he sent gentle, calming thoughts to her, slowly reached out with one hand to touch her. And she fought him away at first, but the best Kouyo knew how to do was to love her, and so she finally gave in, resentfully and like a child, and Kouyo held her while she cried. Ranko would give him no more answers, and so he would not press her for them. He held onto her, starting to cry a little himself, and just quietly continued to do so, allowing the dream to fade away on its own.

... Kouyo sensed an unfamiliar Porcelain presence outside the bookstore as he walked towards the door to leave. By the smile on Kumoru's lips when the priest glanced at him, he figured he was not likely to get any answers if the necromancer knew who it was, and so Kouyo did not even bother asking. He paused momentarily just inside the door to let his hair down, then headed outside, the bell on the door sounding above him as he did so.
The stranger's thoughts were quiet, but hardly private. He seemed excited and also perhaps a little shy. Kouyo found him immediately outside the door: a handsome male youth with red hair held back in a low ponytail, and a pair of glasses on his round face-
"Jilan?" Kouyo gasped aloud, his brief surprise quickly giving way to hesitant affectionate warmth. "You were gone for a while, but you look as though you have grown well." The priest could feel it from him as well - a growing tangible confidence that had not been there in the boy who had left for the Silver World.
As soon as Kouyo found him - not that he had been really hiding - Jilan grinned and happily greeted the High Priest. He enjoyed his time in the Silver World, but also missed his friends here in Gaia. He shyly seemed to hint that he had perhaps missed Kouyo in particular.
Spreading his arms to show off his new robes and taller self a bit better, the little scholar laughed softly; he had grown, and he was fairly certain that he was taller now than he had perhaps ever been the last time he had grown up. Jilan felt better, too - more alive, somehow.
And unable to contain himself a moment longer, Jilan stepped up to Kouyo and threw his arms around the priest in a brief but tight hug.
Kouyo tensed momentarily and gasped a little in surprise, but returned the boy's gesture after a moment. He brushed his fingers gently through Jilan's hair as he stepped away again and smiled.
"You will tell me about your adventures, yes?" he inquired.
The youth nodded, grinning back but at the same time projecting that there were some serious matters he wished to discuss as well concerning his time in the Silver World. Jilan reached out to touch Kouyo's hand, asking if the High Priest would like to accompany him to the tea shop to chat for a little while?
Glancing down at his current Gaian clothing, Kouyo gave off a momentary feeling of worry about his appearance, but determined that he was actually not all that dirty. The cleaning in the storage room was effectively done - Kouyo had already begun sorting and shelving books - and he definitely felt the need to wash his hands, but there was no overwhelming need to rush for a shower and clean robes.
... So if Jilan did not mind him being worn out from work, then Kouyo would be pleased to join him.
Jilan promptly started leading Kouyo down the sidewalk, assuring the High Priest that he looked fine. That, and he was just eager to spend time with Kouyo again.
He took the priest to a rather small coffee shop that he had noticed right adjacent to the hobby store, a few blocks up from the used bookstore. Jilan had never been here before, but he had been wanting to try it....
Kouyo had not really seen the place before, though he had been to the hobby shop several times just to browse. Inside, it was small but cozy, and thankfully not crowded at all. He still huddled a bit closer to Jilan, though, still holding his hand while resting his other hand on the youth's arm.
Though the High Priest was still curious about what coffee was like, but he opted instead for a cup of tea instead.
The little scholar got a small coffee, flavored and sweetened so that it no longer tasted like coffee. He had gotten unused to speaking in the Silver World and had a bit of trouble placing his order; after he had done so, he subtly tried to hide behind Kouyo while he converse with the priest: how had Kouyo been these last few months?
Months.... It had been quite some time. The High Priest sighed, glancing upwards as he thought back over everything, and privately wondered what he should tell the youth.
Well, he had made a few friends, like Dame Chourou and her daughter Uki. His thoughts slipped into silence as he told Jilan, "I also suppose I celebrated the Gaian holiday of Valentine's Day."
He was quiet for a moment, then extended his mind to Jilan again with a small smile and a change of subject: "Oh, if you are wondering where your brother is," Kouyo and Setsushi and Dame Tenkyuu have captured the little covert operative and are holding him at the udonya.
Wait, what? Jilan laughed even as he projected his confusion. High Priest Kouyo just means that Xiao Huo is staying with them, yes? That is what Kumoru told him.
The boy missed his brother, and had been sick recently, too. He seemed to be doing alright now, though - in fact, if Jilan wished to have Xiao Huo back, anytime would be fine, as they really lack the space to accommodate him overnight sweatdrop Though Kouyo still wished to see him often.
"Both of you," he added as the barista served both of their drinks. Kouyo handed Jilan his coffee after giving it a cautious sniff, and then went over to sit at one of the tables.
Jilan eagerly followed the High Priest and climbed into the chair across from him. Of course Jilan will visit as often as he can. He studied three years in the Silver World, learning more about magic, and he wanted to learn more from High Priest Kouyo. Perhaps he could get a head start on studying Porcelain magic, so he would be better at it even before his Naming Ceremony?
... Because he already has a Name. Had one. The boy's brow furrows a little and he fixes his glasses as they start to slide down his nose. He still has it?
The little scholar's mind churned with confusion as he sipped at his coffee. There was nothing in any of the books he had yet read about ... whatever had happened to him. Perhaps the priest knew something?
The High Priest had heard of no such thing, either - of a boy growing into a man, then becoming a boy again. He would not have believed it, either, if not for Jilan. He at once seemed both older and younger than Kouyo. Though of course he had likely been judged by his appearance in the Silver World, no? And generally regarded as a child? The priest suggested that perhaps the little scholar not trouble himself with trying to figure out the mystery of it just yet?
Jilan looked to be nearly nine, if not of that age already. Physically, of course, Kouyo hastily corrected. So his worries about his Naming Ceremony were certainly understandable. The High Priest did not think he would have any trouble when the time came, but perhaps it would be best to wait until afterwords to really start seriously studying magic. Jilan was also a musician, too, no, if Kouyo recalled correctly? How far had his steps wandered in the last three years in the Silver World, and how far might they wander again?
Kouyo smiled gently and took a sip of tea. Then, realizing his own musings about the youth had wandered, he clarified to be sure Jilan caught his meaning - he had a few years left to be a child, so there was no immediate need to trouble himself with intensive study and difficult questions. The High Priest closed his eyes and sighed softly; he was hardly old, himself, but if he awoke one morning a child again....
High Priest Kouyo would relish the extra time to do what he loved to do.
... Right?
Silence stretched for a moment, and the scholar fidgeted uncomfortably and hesitantly wondered if he was wrong? Or had been offensive?
The High Priest gave off a faint but definite feeling of surprise, which then faded into silence as he looked deeply thoughtful for a long moment.
No, Jilan was quite correct. And Kouyo also studied magic before his Naming Ceremony - this was rare, but not unheard of. What the priest meant to say, though, was certainly not that he judged Jilan unsuited or unready for such studies. His projections take on a deferential tone, suddenly addressing Jilan as his elder: little bird Kouyo would be pleased and honored to teach Jilan what he can, but he did not want the scholar to feel that he must start now. This priest knew that he had read his old biography with his poetry, and wanted to be sure that Jilan wished to learn in order to grow into Jilan. Not to grow into Kouyo.
Jilan sipped at his coffee drink, his red gaze lowered as he pondered the High Priest's words. He did not doubt himself - he loved making music, but could not see himself proceeding much further in it, as his true passion was really in magic. But Kouyo's rank in the temple and experience intimidated him slightly, and so when he projected his feelings to Kouyo, they were touched with the shyness he thought he had finally started to shed.
The priests of the Silver World seemed very distant and unhelpful the few times Jilan met them, and so he had not really wanted to try to study magic with any of them. He learned what he could on his own from books and such, but that could only take him so far. Perhaps learning to perform simple feats of magic would help the little scholar better understand some of what he had already read, as well. And he knew no one better than High Priest Kouyo to instruct him.
So, Jilan formally requested: will High Priest Kouyo teach this little scholar Porcelain magic?
Though his mind was already made up by the time Jilan asked the question, Kouyo was quiet for several long moments before he responded.
He considered what Setsushi had mentioned - that Kouyo could train young priests here in Gaia. It was also interesting, seeing how the boy had changed during his time in the Silver World. It had been gradual for Jilan and not likely seemed strange, but for Kouyo to see him for the first time after three months, now three years older, and with such goals in mind for himself....
Jilan's mention of the behavior of the priests troubled Kouyo somewhat, as well, though for now he made no further inquiries. Perhaps he had just been unfortunate in whom he had chanced to meet.
"I will teach you as well as I can," Kouyo told him finally, then smiled as the scholar's face lit up with happiness and excitement. Then he added, "I hope you will share your stories of the Silver World in return."
Of course he would! Jilan grinned and blushed and thanked Kouyo. He could come over whenever Kouyo had time? He could ride in to work with Kumoru and leave with Kouyo from the book shop?
Kouyo pointed out with a satisfied touch to his feelings that he was nearly done with his work at Whitestone Used Books, and so would not be there much longer. But Setsushi's home, where Kouyo still took up space, was not far, and Jilan knew how to get there. When he was done cleaning the storage room, the High Priest would have all the free time in the world, he supposed, and so would welcome Jilan any time.
Jilan nodded, leaning across the table to grasp Kouyo's hands. He would look forward to it, and he would work hard to learn, as well. He would have it no other way for himself.
Perhaps he would alternate days or weeks between learning with Kouyo and learning with Kumoru? His human father was also going to continue instructing him in human magic, but for now, Jilan was far more interested in developing his own natural skill. ... Also, the youth needed to get better at speaking aloud again, as he had allowed that ability to fall by the wayside while in the Silver World....
So he would study both forms of magic? Though the High Priest suddenly felt concerned at this idea, he did not show it. It troubled him to think that Kumoru somehow held Jilan in his claws, and was as cruel to the boy as he had been to Kouyo... but he also hoped that Jilan would not be so devoted to his human father if the man hurt him.
... If nothing else, however, it made it clear to the priest that Jilan did in fact plan to follow a path separate from his own. He only hoped that the little scholar's aspirations would not lead him into trouble.

Kouyo sat with Xiao Huo at the coffee shop near the hobby store, and smiled faintly as he watched the boy demolish a blueberry muffin. It pleased the High Priest that the little child had grown so attached to him, but he was still plagued by persistant worry that he would not be able to fully take care of everything Xiao Huo needed. For one thing, the boy still occasionally asked about portals home; Kouyo had gotten all the information he could out of him with regards to the means of his arrival, but was no closer than before to finding a way back to the Golden World... for Xiao Huo, for himself, or for anyone.
Sipping at his iced tea, he sighed a little. Then, after a moment, the priest extended his mind to the boy, inquiring if he wanted to visit a place that was like home but was not truly. There had been a bit of talk between them already about visiting the false Silver World, but the issue had not been discussed at length. In spite of the child's very young age, Kouyo wanted to talk with him directly about it, and not force him to go....
Xiao Huo drank a sip of his fruity smoothie and looked up at Kouyo, some vague story of rocks crumbling fading from his mind like a dream as he stuffed another chunk of muffin into his mouth. As he chewed it, he considered the priest's words. Like home, but not home.
He missed his mommy and his daddy, so he still really wanted to see them first and foremost. So... if they were not there, what was Xiao Huo supposed to do while he was there?
Study, perhaps? That was what Kouyo planned to do, and it was the reason of his visit in the first place. It is like home enough that everything they learn there should be useful at home as well. The history, the culture, the writing... well, in theory, at least.
The child made a face, a few crumbs falling from his lips as he stuck his tongue out. Study? Why would Xiao Huo want to do that?
Kouyo laughed softly, and handed the boy a napkin. Then he gently reminded him that not all learning comes from books and schools. The priest himself hoped to learn primarily through looking and exploring.
Was that not what Xiao Huo enjoyed doing, as well? Like it or not, whenever he did that, he learned something.
Brow furrowing, the boy tried for a moment to come up with some protest or argument, but found he could not. Then he grinned, giving off a feeling of admiration. Kouyo was very smart; did that also mean that Xiao Huo would not have to go to school, and spend his whole life exploring or making pretend places in his mind and with his dolls?
Now, the High Priest did not say that. But... Xiao Huo was right. It was true, at least, that he need not attend classes at a school just yet.
So, would he like to come to the other Silver World with Kouyo, then? So perhaps they could explore together, or Xiao Huo could explore a bit on his own, perhaps, if he was very careful. If nothing else, the priest could tell him from experience that, the more he knew, the more intricate and amazing his worlds of make-believe would become.
Again Xiao Huo considered. And then he nodded, smiling before stuffing the last of his muffin into his mouth. As long as he did not have to go to classes and read boring books all the time, he would go with Kouyo.

Kouyo threw himself down onto his sofa with a tired huff, and remained face-down on the cushions. He exhaled slowly and steadily, trying to drain all of the tension from his tired muscles at the same time; fueled by a desire to be done wiht the storage room forever, and now also wishing to do so sooner rather than later to free up his time to pay a visit to the false Silver World, the Porcelain had very likely overworked himself today. Weary and sore, Kouyo carefully rolled over onto his back, resting his hands on his stomach and closing his eyes, then took a few more deep breaths.
Though his body ached for sleep, the High Priest wished to receive an answer to the question Setsushi had voiced concerning the mysterious other plane. ... And shadows of worry and anxiety begin to form in Kouyo's mind; he realized after a moment that his relaxation would do him no good if he kept clenching his fists and jaw. With some effort and protest from his body, the priest got up again and hugged his knees to his chest, resting his chin on them while he considered. Rest would be the best idea, but napping now would also likely make it more difficult to sleep tonight.
So perhaps now there was time to ask for visions. The priest squirmed again to a more comfortable sitting position and pressed his palms together, wondering for a moment if he should inquire first after the name of the little boy they call Xiao Huo; it was a fairly simple question. On the other hand, however, if he had a clearer picture of whatever may be going on in this false Silver World, then perhaps he would be able to rest easier after.
The mental tiredness continued to weigh upon Kouyo as he awakened to his vision, but fortunately, his body no longer ached in sleep. He could not see anything, however. At least not at first.
A familiar god's voice told him that the place they believed until recently to be the Silver World was "also Her world". And as Kouyo tried to focus his tired eyes on the shapes and forms in the air before him, they slowly solidified into buildings, streets, people. Porcelain. It looked like home, but Kouyo knew by feel that it was not; the place had to be the Capital City of the place they called the Silver World.
The High Priest knew the date in that place to be far in the future; Jilan and Setsushi had purchased books there that described the latter's life, Kouyo's, the Imperial Princess's as history. And yet the buildings looked so similar, Kouyo could feel the pain of nostalgia and longing settling into his heart.
But he had to know if the place was safe first. And so he inquired further to clarify - did the god mean it was another place created by the Silver Empress? The little Porcelain High Priest did not mean to question Her nor Her motives, but.... He and his people feared what they did not understand.
The god then told him that it was a gift for "you all". Beyond that, not even the little gods knew what it was for.
Kouyo's eyes remained fixed on the vision of the Capital City as he took in this information, then suddenly asked to whom "you all" referred. The Porcelain? All Gaians?
The god clarified that the other world was for all of the Porcelain who had left the Golden World.
Faintly troubled, the High Priest simply nodded. He remained silent for several long moments as he tried to move in closer to the city in his dreams, but it threatened to fade and fill with mist, obscuring his vision - perhaps he was too tired. He will be going to see it eventually anyway....
Ah, which reminded him, he still would be able to seek the counsel of the Name in his dreams as long as he was in the Silver World, yes? And... though the priest was somewhat reassured if the other place was created by the Silver Empress, he still had to ask again: was it safe there for all the Porcelain?
After reassuring the Porcelain that he would still be in contact with the Name during his time away, the god considered for a moment before telling Kouyo that the other place was not safe. However, it was not any more dangerous than the Golden World.
... The Golden World in which Kouyo and the others grew up? Or the Golden World now, where Porcelain were finding themselves taken from their homeland and placed instead in Gaia? Was the danger supernatural, or merely the day-to-day worries of mortals?
The god reiterated that he meant the Golden World, and then gently reminded Kouyo that his distinctions were not sensible. Even the supernatural meant little to the divine gods. However, at his continued questioning, the god told the little High Priest that there are fewer malevolent spirits to trouble the people of the Silver World; that the Names and Chaoses, who could be dangerous or not, existed in both places; and that the outside visitors would be more likely to have psionics or magic applied to them either against their will or without their knowledge than in the Golden World.
Though his mind was growing hazy, Kouyo nodded, taking in this information. He committed it to memory so he could tell Setsushi of it when he awoke... but before he could think to ask anything else, the priest's tired mind pulled the vision from him and urged him into deeper, more restful sleep.

Jilan knocks on the door to Setsushi's house, and waits only a moment before pushing it open slowly and sticking his head in. The High Priest is home now, yes? Because he brought his silly little brother, too-
-Who lets himself right into the house, and motions for Jilan to enter as well.
A moment later, the High Priest, dressed in just his under-robes, peers around the screen from the private half of the house, stretching as he gives off a profoundly content feeling - apparently he had a very relaxing nap after work. Kouyo quickly assures Jilan and his brother that he was just waking up anyway, though, and that Xiao Huo did not disturb him.
Then, blushing faintly and excusing himself, the priest again retreats behind the screen to put on the rest of his robes. He hopes Jilan will forgive him for not being ready for his arrival.
Xiao Huo promptly climbs onto one of the chairs and makes himself comfortable, his mind already cooking up some new adventure for his dolls.
The little scholar assures Kouyo that it is quite alright - he got excited and came a little early anyway sweatdrop
Is it true that Kouyo will be taking his brother to the Silver World? That is what Xiao Huo told him, but Jilan of course takes what the little one tells him with a grain of salt, and wants to be sure....
The High Priest emerges again, more fully dressed and with hairbrush in hand, yawning and rubbing one eye. He smiles faintly as he tells Jilan that yes, they will be going. Probably not right away, because Kouyo has some things to finish, but perhaps if it looks like it is taking too long, then he will send the little one on ahead.
And he settles into another chair across the table from Xiao Huo, feeling the young boy's excitement about the trip and adding his own.
The youngest boy looks up from his dolls momentarily when the High Priest addresses him, then goes back to playing.
... For a moment at least. Then he suddenly slides down off of his chair and creeps under the table and grasps the end of Kouyo's red drapery that hangs down his left arm. And starts to unwind it from around the priest. Can he borrow it? eek
Jilan's mouth hangs open and the scholar radiates a feeling of terminal embarrassment. Undressing the High Priest--!?!/ gonk
The High Priest can do nothing but laugh as the little Porcelain unwraps the length of red fabric from around his arm, then goes to the other side of his chair, and yanks the other end free from where Kouyo had had it tucked behind his sash. He assures Jilan that he will not die without the drapes.
However!
Kouyo catches the other end of the cloth before Xiao Huo can tug it out of reach. "Tetsuhi," he says softly and with a tiny smile, sending a thread of thought out privately to the boy to get his attention. That is his real name, yes? He is welcome to borrow the drapes as long as he is careful and does not tear them or get them dirty.
The boy whirls around and stares wide-eyed at the High Priest. His mind is silent with shock for a moment, then he rushes at Kouyo, fists flailing.
After he worked so hard to keep his real identity secret, the High Priest knows his name anyway!? ... Kouyo probably knew the whole time and was just messing with him. BUT THE PRIEST WILL KEEP IT TOP SECRET, RIGHT? He is not one of those evil bad spies?
Kouyo holds his hands out, a look of concentration crossing his features momentarily as he projects gentle calming feelings to the child. None of Tetsuhi's little punches touch the High Priest. He had not at all been expecting the boy to get so upset, though - it troubles him somewhat, too, if his little make-believe world of spies and secret missions is truly so important. Hopefully the little one's imagination will not cause him trouble as he grows up... but Kouyo tries to keep in mind that he is only a very small child now.
He catches Tetsushi's hands in his own after a moment, and softly reminds the child that he is just the High Priest, not a spy of any kind at all. He serves the Name, of course, so he must always be honest, but... if Tetsuhi really does not want him to tell anyone about his true identity, then Kouyo will not.
Then he looks up at Jilan as well. Tetsuhi's adopted brother Jilan is also honest, yes? And will be able to keep the secret if Tetsuhi wishes him to?
When Jilan is able to start his brain again, he nods, simultaneously projecting his agreement with and apologies to Kouyo. Though... he is relieved to see that the High Priest is not upset or angry, and realizes once he has had a few minutes to calm down that it was probably a bit silly to expect the priest to be upset in the first place.
Thus relaxed, the little scholar steps up behind his flailing brother and wraps his arms around him, and assures Tetsuhi more firmly that the little boy's secret is safe. Jilan is going to be a mage, not a spy. And Tetsuhi thinks he would make a bad spy anyway, no? He starts to move his little brother away from Kouyo slowly.
Calming down a little, the boy giggles impishly and nods. Jilan would be terrible at it, with all of his worries slipping out everywhere. He is much safer in a library with a book all the time.
... He still thinks the High Priest may prove a worthy foe, though. Tetsuhi eyes Kouyo warily, but he cannot keep the smile from his lips or his projections.
Kouyo urges the child to run along and play for a little while, and do... whatever it was he needed the red drapes for. There are, uh, top secret things he must discuss with Jilan. He will always keep an eye on Tetsuhi, codename Xiao Huo, but it is not something the little spy needs to fear.
Kouyo, Revealer of Really Big Secrets, would do best to be wary of Xiao Huo, though! The boy tugs his hands from Kouyo's gentle grasp and steps away from him. Then he drapes the borrowed length of red cloth around his shoulders like a cape, then strikes a pose.
... Then runs to the bathroom to try to get a good look in the mirror at how awesome that just was.
Doing his best not to be embarrassed by the boy - he is just a child after all - Jilan drags a chair closer to Kouyo and sits beside him.
And he asks when Kouyo plans on going to the Silver World with Xiao Huo? The little scholar can tell him more about the place, if he likes, since he has spent so much time there recently.
... Recently? In the last few years? Months? Thinking about it hurts the scholar's brain a little sweatdrop
Ah, the High Priest is a bit curious about the difference in the flow of time. He only plans to stay there for one year, rather than three like Jilan, but time is always shorter in Gaia, no?
Well, Jilan is uncertain of the exact differences; it may even be a bit random. He does not recall the date when he first arrived in the Silver World the first time, because it happened by accident - to this day, the boy still cannot recall how precisely he arrived, except that one day he was there.
Jilan shrugs and glances up at Kouyo, smiling weakly as he rests a hand gently on Kouyo's arm. The High Priest will probably have a better chance of figuring it out than this little one.
... If he may ask, what does High Priest Kouyo want to see and learn in the Silver World?
The priest places his hand on top of Jilan's, and studies their fingers, smiling shyly as he admits that he hopes to just see more of his own kind and live among them. However... his primary objective is to learn more about the Silver World in general. It is not truly the Silver World - Kouyo believes Jilan has heard the explanation from himself or from Setsushi at some point already?
So... while Kouyo hopes to live and to enjoy himself and to make friends over there as Jilan has, he also harbors his suspicions, and wishes to at least try to be sure that the place is safe.
Jilan hopes so, because he has many friends there now.
The boy's melancholy fades quickly, and he perks up. He can write down where they all live, so the High Priest can get in touch with them if he wants to or needs to. His closest friends are not rich people, but if Kouyo needs music or companionship, he is fairly sure they would be happy to spend time with him.
... Though... Jin is quite rich. But Jilan is really not sure if sie is still a friend, exactly.
Who is Jin? Jilan has mentioned hir before - his first tutor, no?
Well, if Kouyo does meet hir, Jilan hopes it is on good terms. Jin was his first tutor, and a strange one, at that. Let him do as he pleased for the most part, but supported his schooling and such with hir seemingly endless funds. Sie apparently does work for the Silver Empress; sie would disappear for weeks at a time, but never told Jilan what sort of work sie did, exactly.
Ah, and he trusts the High Priest to keep a secret, but Jilan received a large sum of money while he was in the Silver World, the last year that he was there. The gift was anonymous, but he thinks it may have come from Jin. If the minstrel was indeed the source of the cash, though, that was all Jilan heard from hir over the last three years.
Except for what he heard from Shuuken - about Jin trying to kill her Sorcerer friend.
Jilan's melancholy seems to have returned.
Kouyo keeps his thoughts hidden, though a pensive look settles over his features to match Jilan's as he considers both what Jilan told him and what he learned from his visions. He allows a gentle feeling of reassurance to flow into the youth after a moment, then tells him that he might like to meet this Jin. One who works with the Silver Empress would likely have valuable information about the nature of the place. Whether or not sie volunteers it is another story but... well, meeting Jin would be a start.
He assures Jilan that he will be careful, of course.
And then moves his hand to rest it on the little scholar's shoulder. Kouyo would also like to know more about Jilan's other friends in the Silver World, as well. Many of them are musicians, yes...?
