~: Chapter 17: Strange Warnings :~ Xiu was...curious. Well…not exactly wholly curious (there were certainly traces of apprehension and excitement mixed in there somewhere) but curious enough. He was after all, going to visit a temple; not the same temple where Hazeline had obtained his soul but a temple nevertheless. The white frei wondered about this. Would there be feelings of déjà vu or something? Like how those mythical books seem to claim that a person could recognize places they have been to in their past lives. Admittedly those books were rather vague on the subject of visiting similar places but still… the white frei was a little wary. What could have possibly made his past self give up his soul that easily? It wasn’t that Xiu had anything against his current guardian but self musings have churned up more than a few questions that needed answering. Xiu could only hope that they’d be answered in this lifetime... ----------------------------------- “We are here,” announced Hazeline jarring the white frei out of his thoughts. Glancing about, Xiu was surprised to find themselves parked quite a distance from where the temple was. “It’s so that we’d be able to avoid the jams around the roads when the crowd builds up,” explained Hazeline seeing her charge’s questioning look. “It can get rather crowded around here sometimes,” “Oh dear, I hope I’d not get in the way,” said Xiu a little worriedly; the mental image of him obstructing the flow of praying people coming to mind. “It should be fine, Xiu,” said Hazeline giving her charge an encouraging smile. “I have gotten lost a couple of times as well but no harm so far. Just wait by the car should we get separated,” “Alright Hazeline. Got it,” said Xiu with a slight nod of his head. Floating with his guardian, Xiu entered the temple and was immediately taken by the strong smell of joss sticks being burned. Looking around, the frei noted many urns being filled with even more joss sticks as people continued to pray from one deity to another. “Why don’t you stand here for a minute, Xiu, while I get some joss sticks and oil from that counter over there,” said Hazeline as she led her raevan to a relatively quieter part of the temple. “I won’t be gone a minute,” Xiu nodded and was secretly relieved. The number of people crowding around various altars was beginning to feel suffocating to the white frei and standing here away from the crowd gave him ample opportunity to observe the going ons of the temple. Folding his wings neatly behind him, Xiu spotted a couple of bronze Fu Dogs guarding the main door. Thinking that perhaps it would be a while till Hazeline actually returned, the white frei saw no harm in approaching them for closer observation. “Impressive aren’t they?” Startled, Xiu turned and was surprised to see an elderly gentleman eyeing him. Judging by the person’s clothes, the old man was probably one of the working staff around the temple. Trying his best to look non-menacing (lest he gave the poor person a heart attack), Xiu nodded politely. “Yes, they are,” the white frei said, wondering a little at the other’s lack of curiousity. Hadn’t he realized that…Xiu was missing his lower half? Or could it be that…this old man had met another of his kind before. That seemed probable. Xiu wondered which raevan it was. “Want a bit of advice?” the old man spoke again cutting Xiu’s thoughts short and watching the white frei with a hint of amusement on his face. “Well, I’m giving it to you anyway. Keep your guard up when the day of the tomb sweeping arrives, young one,” “Day of the tomb sweeping?” said Xiu looking at the elderly person quizzically. Somehow, the man’s words were sending a chill down his spine. “W-what’s that?” “You’ll know soon enough,” said the old man with a knowing smile that was slightly aggravating to the white frei. “But for now, it is sufficient,” “No, it’s not!,” said Xiu angrily as he reached out to grab the human by the arm. “If someone’s going to be hurt-,” “Xiu?” came Hazeline’s voice from the crowd and the white frei momentarily shifted his gaze from the old man to his guardian. Hazeline was making her way towards them through the crowd. She seemed flustered and Xiu felt a small stab of guilt. He had moved from their agreed spot after all. Hazeline must have been worried. Turning back to face the gentlemen, Xiu was surprised to find that the human was gone. Funny, he knew that the guy was there just a minute ago. Perhaps he could walk fast…that was really the only explanation to his sudden disappearance after all… “You nearly had me worried for a minute back there,” said Hazeline as she approached her charge. “Why did you go off?” “Err…I was interested those,” replied Xiu motioning briefly towards the silent Fu Dogs. “By the way, did you happen to see…an old man nearby?” “Old man?” said Hazeline frowning a little. “No, there was no old man nearby. Just you. Xiu, is there something you need to tell me?” “Well, I was talking to one just before you returned,” explained Xiu as he helped his guardian with the items she had just bought. “He must have left,” “Yeah, I guess he must have…,”

Note: There's an original story similar to this but...I do not know its name or author. Would appreciate it if someone could shed some light here. ~: Chapter 17: The Brave Little Dog :~ Once there was a farmer who lived with his family and their little dog on a small farm. Despite the farm being small, they were a happy family with lots of food to eat on their table and good clothes to wear on their back.
Then one night, a group of trolls came creeping, creeping, creeping…
But the brave little dog heard them and barked with all his might.
The trolls were scared by the sound of the little dog’s loud barking and decided to run away.
However the next morning, instead of praising the brave little dog for his courage, the farmer was angry. The brave little dog’s barking had kept him awake most of the night and so, in anger, the farmer took a big knife and chopped off the little dog’s front leg.

That night, the trolls returned.

Despite the pain, the brave little dog continued to bark…

And the trolls had to run in fear…
But the farmer only grew angrier at the little dog’s loud barking and continued to hack away at a leg for each night that he was kept awake until…
The poor little brave dog had no more legs to cut. And yet each night, the brave little dog kept barking, barking, barking…
In anger, the farmer took the little dog’s head off in one large swipe of the large knife.

That night, the trolls came back but… There was no little brave dog to bark at them.
Delighted, the trolls broke into the good farmer’s house and ate everyone in it; leaving none alive.
The end.

~: Chapter 18 (1): The Unwelcomed Visitor :~ It was getting late and the white frei was uneasy. Ever since their return from the graveyard, there was something that was simply…Not Quite Right. Xiu shifted his wings uncomfortably as he recalled the morning’s incident. It had all started like any other weekend morning…except for a single difference. They were going to visit a grave. Not just anyone’s grave mind you, but the grave of Hazeline’s biological father. Now that alone should have caused warning bells to ring but Xiu had thought that paying one’s respects to one’s ancestors was a noble thing to do… and it was; by most standards... Besides, there were many other families about the cemetery as well. Now only if he had known that Qing Ming was also known as the ‘Tomb Sweeping Day’. Perhaps then he’d been more careful. The creature (he could sense its hostility) was now taking on a rather ominous form; Xiu could see that well enough. Twisting and turning, the black mass had taken on a rather feminine figure. Or rather, there were brief moments where a vaguely feminine figure could be discerned among the shapeless black tendrils; an extended arm here, a lock of flowing hair there… The trouble had started when they had arrived at the site of the deceased’s grave. Xiu had watched as Hazeline cleared away old leaves, twigs, and other various organic matter that had accumulated over the rather modestly sized gravestone. She had then proceeded to lay out plates of food and drinks before the single grave; waiting for a couple of minutes while the soul of her father ‘ate’ the offered food. Once her father had ‘eaten’ his fill, two coins were tossed and if they landed with one facing up while the other faced down, the meal had been eaten and it was alright to clear the dishes away. The visitation was then ended with the ceremonial burning of various paper offerings. Back then, Xiu should have realized that something was just… not quite right… The feeling of unease had begun when he was watching Hazeline lay out the dishes. Xiu couldn’t help but feel that there was someone…watching them. Glancing briefly about, Xiu could not detect any curious bystanders about. True, there were many families gathered around various gravesites but none of them were paying him any particular attention. In fact, Xiu was almost sure that some of them were trying to avoid looking his way. The feeling of being watched however did not dissipate over time but the white frei had been careless enough to assume that it was because they were in a cemetery and cemeteries always made him feel uneasy; what with their gloomy atmosphere and all… The white frei only truly began to worry when that feeling of being watched continued to follow them out of the cemetery and into their home. Well, not precisely into their home per se but close to it. The ‘feeling’ had stopped short just before their front door as though it could go no further. Xiu wondered at this but was nevertheless glad that the being (or whatever it was) was hindered from entering their home. But now he wasn’t so sure anymore… As the evening drew near, the ominous feeling continued to grow and intensify and what had started off as just a ‘feeling’ had now taken on a more darker and menacing form. It started with the appearance of what may have been just a trick of the eye; a small patch of translucent darkness hovering just beyond the shop’s door….a mirage. Xiu himself would have probably missed it had he not been troubled by the day’s earlier events. However, with each passing minute, the darkness gradually intensified and Xiu soon found himself unable to tear his gaze away. Separated only by the thin glass of the window, Xiu watched, mesmerized as the shadow grew and lengthened. By night the feeling of dread had become absolutely suffocating. Only once did Xiu leave his place by the window to attend to Hazaline’s request at joining them for dinner. The consumption of human fare was not something the white frei indulged in but not wanting to worry Hazeline, Xiu obliged. Dinner that night was quiet. With Joshua away at a friend’s place, the dinner at the dining table was dull. Accepting only a small cup of weak tea, Xiu listened absent mindedly as Hazeline conversed with the housekeeper over the coming week’s plan. Nothing much really; just the ordering of certain books and the financial situation of the store; nothing new. When dinner finally ended, Xiu found himself back by the store’s window peeking through the shutters. Was it just him or…had the shadow gotten bigger and nearer? Xiu’s rune flickered uneasily… At ten Hazeline had called down, enquiring if he wasn’t planning to turn in for the night. It had been a long day after all, his guardian had said from the upper floors where they kept their residence. Xiu had shaken his head and told Hazeline that he planned on staying awake a little longer. There was a book he had opened at the moment and to close it at such a time would be unthinkable the white frei had replied. His guardian saw no harm in that and merely requested that he turned the lights off when he was done. Xiu told her not to worry. … It was true. There was a book opened and he had planned to read it “ Famous Stories by Hans Christian Andersen” was the title of the book and currently, he had the chapter opened on “The Little Mermaid”. But that was beside the point. The point was…Xiu could not possibly sleep. Not with something that foreboding lurking just beyond the wooden door. He must observe it. He must not let it in… he musn’t….

~: Chapter 18 (2): Chosen Victim :~ “Xiu, hey Xiu! Wake up!” Xiu woke up blearily to the sound of Hazeline’s voice. It was still dark outside which meant that… Xiu flared his wings wide as he pushed himself off the table where he had dozed off. Hazeline was wearing her working clothes. Was it morning already? “I saw the light still on so I came down,” explained Hazaline looking at Xiu worriedly. “You okay?” “Yeah, I must have fallen asleep while reading I guess,” said Xiu with and uneasy shift of his wings. “Hey, Hazelin-, no, nevermind,” said Xiu catching sight of the inquisitive glance of the housekeeper as she stood behind his guardian. The last thing he needed was having Mrs. Bedievier listening in on his fears. The admirable old lady was apt to scoff at him and telling everyone who’d listen to her that he had a wild imagination. He’d have to find a way to tell Hazeline of his problems later. Xiu felt that it was crucial that he did. Perhaps then he’d be able too find out the cause of this particular problem. Having made up his mind, the white frei smiled and somehow managed to utter a soft laugh of sorts. “No more late night reading for me I guess,” laughed the white frei sheepishly. Hazeline nodded. “Definitely,” said his guardian chuckling softly. “Well, if there’s nothing else...,” “No, nothing at all,” said Xiu speaking with a confidence that he did not have. Hazeline however did not seem to notice it and together with the housekeeper, the two ladies made their way up the stairs once more leaving the white frei very alone and to himself. Once he was sure that they were not likely to return anytime soon, the white frei softly took the spare key hidden beneath the cash register and quietly unlocked the front door of the bookstore. The morning had yet to fully set in and in the semi darkness, Xiu’s rune glowed softly. Had the being left? No said a soft voice within him as the white frei stood scanning the early morning street. It was still there, still waiting but with the coming of the day, the creature was no longer as dark or as foreboding as when it had been during the night. Xiu was still worried though. It meant that the being was simply hanging around; waiting for something to happen. If only he knew what it was that it was waiting for. ----------------------------------- Hazeline had left sometime later for work and although still present, Xiu was relieved that the being made no attempt to harm Hazeline when she got out of the house and into her car. Xiu had followed his guardian then; on the pretext of helping her with her briefcase. Hazeline had not questioned him then. It wasn’t unusual for the white frei to want to help her. The being made no move to stop his guardian as she slowly backed her car onto the busy morning street but Xiu could sense that it was far from idle. In fact, it seemed to be searching for something… “What do you want?” the white frei demanded when he was sure that they’d not be overheard. “Why have you followed us?” The being did not answer but Xiu was sure that it was…to some extend…amused. The being continued to hover before the shop all through the morning and as afternoon drew near, Xiu was beginning to wonder if it was a lost soul of some sort. Perhaps he should call Lucia to find out. Unlike him, the kitten raevan had the ability to actually speak to spirits and subsequently solve whatever was ailing them. Xiu knew this first hand as he had help Lucia with a child ghost before. Getting up, Xiu was all but ready to dial Lucia’s number on the phone when the soft purring of an engine could be heard. Glancing out, Xiu could discern the figure of Joshua jumping about excitedly in the back seat with his friend. Oh yeah, Joshua was staying over at a friend’s place last night and he’d be returning home today. Smiling, Xiu was just about to open the front door to greet the young boy when a movement in the air stopped the frei’s heart cold. The shadowy figure which had dwindled itself to nothing more than a dark smear in the afternoon glare had now exploded into a black mass of gigantic proportions. Stay in the car! Stay in the car! STAY IN THE CAR!! Xiu’s mind screamed in silent agony as the frei, nearly mad with horror, rushed out. If that thing got to Joshua… No! It simply wouldn’t bear thinking about!! The young boy, oblivious to Xiu’s fear, had by now stepped out of the car and was smiling in Xiu’s direction. Everything seemed to be in slow motion as Xiu saw the monster curved itself into a massive arc that was almost graceful and descended upon the unsuspecting boy. But Xiu was closing in rapidly onto the young child as well. If only he could… Their bodies made a dull thud as the raevan slammed himself solidly into the little boy. Gasping for breath, both raevan and child toppled heavily onto the paved sidewalk as the dark matter succeeded in only grazing the young boy’s arm. By then, the commotion had cause the housekeeper as well a few passersby to come running to their aid. Xiu was hauled off the startled boy and would probably have received a trashing from the mob had Joshua and Mrs. Bedievier not defended him. The dark being meanwhile, had disappeared with a satisfied air.

~: Chapter 18 (3): When the Night Comes :~ He might have escaped being mauled by a mob but Xiu was not spared the furious lashing of the housekeeper’s tongue. The white frei floated silently with his head held down as the furious woman blew steam. Just what was he doing? Didn’t he think before he acted? People were SHOCKED! Xiu’s wings twitched slightly as the petite old dame continued her admonitions. He knew Mrs. Bedievier well enough to know that she (and many of the older generations) simply had to run her (to put it frankly) spit dry before she was capable of stopping. The best way to handle this was to just stand by and stay quiet while the storm blew over. And blew over it did. An hour later and the good old lady was once more busy and bustling about the house while Joshua had sneaked his way into his room and was no doubt playing one of those handheld games of his. With the peace of the house restored, Xiu made his way once again to the shop’s entrance and glanced about. That was odd. He could not detect any traces of the dark being anymore. Perhaps it had finally left or that commotion earlier had scared it away. Feeling relieved, the white frei let out a small smile and went about the day’s business with a lighter heart. ------------------------- The call came around 4.30pm, half an hour before Hazeline was due to leave for home. Mrs. Bedievier had picked up the phone as listened as Hazeline informed the housekeeper that she’d be away for a couple of days at a convention. It turned out that a colleague who was supposed to attend the function had suddenly called in sick and a replacement was needed fast. Hazeline had volunteered for it and would be grateful if Mrs. Bedievier could pack her suitcase for her. The housekeeper nodded and said that she would. Hazeline had then replied that that would be fine and that she’d only be stopping to pick up her suitcase. If problems should arise in her absence, she could be reached via her mobile phone. Xiu listened in on the conversation with passive interest. Hazeline was a busy woman and had often had to leave home to attend various conventions and talks about the latest research in plant biotechnology. Xiu was only disappointed that Hazeline had to leave so abruptly. Well, it could not be helped. Xiu guessed he had to make the best of it. Dinner that night was brief and once it was over, everyone retired to their rooms. Xiu found himself lying restlessly against the bed’s cool sheets as he stared at the ceiling. Reading, at this point of time, was pointless. The white frei was worried and knew why. The thing couldn’t possibly just disappear like that a small nagging voice had said despite Xiu telling himself otherwise a couple of hours ago…when the sun was still up… The white frei frowned. He hated it when his gut feeling began saying otherwise; mostly because it was unwarranted. Flaring his wings, Xiu got off his bed and made his way quietly downstairs. The bookstore was dark and empty. Turning on the light switch, Xiu gingerly drew the curtains aside and peeked out. Nothing. Not even a meow from the many stray cats that frequented the block. Xiu glanced at the clock. It was a quarter to eleven. Everyone who had no business staying awake was asleep. If so…then why was he still uneasy… Thud The muted sound of something relatively heavy falling onto the carpeting of the first floor made Xiu snapped his head in the direction of the sound. It had come from one of the rooms. Floating cautiously upwards, the feeling of unease within the frei continued to grow. Something’s not right Turning his head sharply in the direction of Joshua’s bedroom, Xiu began to feel a sense of dread. This feeling…the frei recognized it. It was the same feeling he had in the graveyard; the same feeling that had been bothering him all of last night. Why was it… A soft murmur could be heard. Was Joshua talking in his sleep again? The young boy used to do that a lot when he had things on his mind. Turning the doorknob, Xiu quietly pushed the door open. It was a good thing that Joshua was not in the habit of locking his room door. “Joshua?” Xiu called softly. A sliver of moonlight shone through the partially closed window and as Xiu’s eyes adjusted to the partial darkness, the white frei gave a gasp. Seeping through the window like some nightmarish miasma was the creature that had followed them back from the cemetery. Panicked, Xiu slammed the window shut and as he did so, Xiu felt a sort of tremor coming from the trail of darkness as it was cleaved from its main body. Cold sweat now lined the fair frei’s pale features. Now he understood why that being was no longer stalking about the front door. It had found its victim. “Joshua...,” murmured Xiu worriedly. Floating over to the young child, Xiu flicked on the table lamp and watched the young boy. Joshua seemed to be sleeping deeply but there were troubled lines upon the child’s brow. Nightmare? thought Xiu silently to himself as he brushed the sweat away from the young boy’s forehead. Don’t worry. I won’t let it harm you Outside, the shadow had other plans…

~: Chapter 18 (4): Sick Child :~ Joshua was sick and Xiu was worried. He had stayed up by the young boy’s side through most of the night and had only reluctantly moved back to his own room when he had heard Mrs. Bedievier stirring. The situation was worrisome. All through the night the being had kept its persistent watch by the window; never once letting up. Xiu had watched in horror as it began shifting and swirling beyond the window’s glass pane; a beckoning hand; a soft laughter... Twice Xiu fancied he heard small taps coming from the thin glass that separated the creature from its prey. Joshua had whimpered then and Xiu had bent over to comfort the young boy. When he next looked up, there were two eyes staring back ravenously at him. The creature seemed to be seizing him up; trying to fathom the extent of his capabilities. Xiu gulped and would have turned away then had his rune not glowed with a sudden flare of light. In that instant, an instinct long buried within the white frei told Xiu that backing down now was akin to giving up and allowing the being its claim over Joshua. That won’t be happening Blue eyes stared levelly back at the creature’s glowing red ones and time seemed to have stopped. How long had they been staring down at each other, Xiu did not know but just when the white frei thought he’d lost, the creature blinked and the eyes were gone. Gasping and finally able to tear his gaze away, the white frei looked down and realized that…his hands were shaking. He had been terrified and had not noticed it. It was then that the sound of the housekeeper awakening from slumber was heard and still shaking from nerves, Xiu had left the little boy’s room. The fight was over for the night, that much Xiu knew but…there was still the next night…and the night after that. Xiu’s heart shrank as he thought of facing that thing in a battle of wills night after night. It simply can’t go on. What he was doing…was merely trying the creature’s patience. All day long the white frei floated worriedly about the house; too afraid to leave Joshua to feed. Although faint, the presence of the creature had never really left Joshua’s room. Perhaps the housekeeper could feel it too because when she next emerged from tending to the sick boy, the face was pale and drawn. “Nasty sickness about,” was all she told Xiu as she hurried over to prepare some chicken soup for the sick child. The white frei nodded. It was nasty alright. And was probably about to get nastier. Slipping into Joshua’s room while the housekeeper busied herself in the kitchen, Xiu watched as the young boy continued to whimper softly in his sleep; taking his hand and squeezing it lightly in the hopes of conveying some form of reassurance to the sleeping figure. Xiu wondered what kind of devilry had that creature done onto the young child to cause him to whimper so. The housekeeper had bustled in then; carrying a tray of warm soup for the feverish child. Waving Xiu away, the housekeeper began nursing the sick boy as only an experienced mother would; leaving Xiu to fend for himself as best as he could. Floating down to the bookstore, Xiu absently took charge of its running while Mrs. Bedievier fussed upstairs. All this while, the creature waited patiently for the night to come…

~: Chapter 18 (5): Second Nightly Confrontation:~ The lack of sleep was beginning to take its toll upon the white frei. The day seemed to be stretched out wretchedly long and yet…nighttime came all too soon. Reluctantly Xiu found himself closing the shop for the day and flipping the shop’s ‘Open’ sign to ‘Close’ before locking it shut. Floating up, Xiu saw the housekeeper having her own simple supper of a slice of toast and an apple. “Looking after Joshua has really made me tired, Xiu. I guess I’d be turning in early tonight. Joshua’s just had his meal. Poor child. He should be asleep,” “Got it, Mrs. Bedievier. I will keep an eye on him,” said Xiu hearing the housekeeper’s underlying tone; which suited him just fine really. Xiu had planned to stay with the sick child throughout the night anyway. Mrs. Bedievier’s request only made it easier. Settling down beside the sleeping boy, Xiu gave the window a thoughtful look before drawing the curtains across it. Xiu doubted that it would help much in deterring the being but it if could prevent him from seeing those eyes… Xiu must have slept for when he next awoke; the clock by the bedside was displaying its time as 11.55pm and the curtains were fluttering gently in the night breeze. The window had been opened! Panicked, the white frei quickly turned to Joshua and apart from the young boy’s restless slumber, the room seemed to be in order. Floating to the window, Xiu was just about to close it shut when a single black tendril snapped out and gave Xiu’s wrist a sharp twist. Giving out a startled cry of pain, Xiu found himself forcefully pulled close to the window’s tiny opening and beyond it, glaring at him with deep hatred was… That creature… Xiu gasped and tried pulling his hand free but the creature’s grip was strong. Wincing, Xiu was practically face to face with that thing when a voice spoke. You can’t protect him forever . The voice was feminine and the tone malevolent. Gritting his teeth in anger and pain, Xiu growled a reply. “Then at least I’ll keep him safe; until you tire,” I will never tire~ the voice laughed sinisterly. I will get every last one of them…“No! Never!” shouted Xiu angrily causing the sleeping housekeeper in the next room to awaken and the landing light switched on. Hissing angrily the creature released its grip on the white frei and disappeared as soon as the bewildered housekeeper stumbled in. “What’s all the fuss, Xiu?” the bleary eyed woman enquired as she registered the scene before her. “What are you doing by the window like that, Xiu?” “I-I had a nightmare,” said Xiu looking apologetic. “I’m sorry,” “Well…if that’s so, I guess I’d better be heading to bed again,” said the good lady as she turned her back. “By the way Xiu, why did you close that window? I came in earlier and found the both of you sleeping. The room was rather stuffy so I had the window opened,” “Well, it was getting rather chilly,” said the frei and he wasn’t lying. The sight of the creature as she held onto his wrist had chilled the white frei’s heart to the bone. “I-I’d feel better with the window closed, if it’s all the same to you,” “It’s fine by me,” said the housekeeper stepping away. “Goodnight, Xiu,” “Goodnight, Mrs. Bedievier,”
