“I’ll be back in an hour or so, Xiu” said Hazeline stopping before the Lab. “Call me if there’s anything important, alright?”
“I will, Hazeline. Thank you and have a good time at the conference,” said Xiu as he waved his guardian off. Hazeline nodded and gave her car’s horn a final toot before driving off.
Left alone before the Lab, Xiu paused to give the building a thoughtful glance. The last time he had been here was during his check up with Dr. Tsu and Xiu had found the Doctor’s raevan, Zave, a likable raevan enough. Xiu wondered if he’d be able to meet Zave again today. Well, he had come with the intention of looking at some of Tsu’s medical books (and perhaps borrow them if the doctor would let him) so the chances of meeting the Doctor and his charge seemed plausible enough.
He might even meet Dr. Kyou if he was lucky…
Xiu cringed. The last he had remembered of Dr. Kyou was of the Doctor withdrawing a syringe full of his blood and testing it for the virus. The white raevan felt a pang of guilt. The Doctor had been hurt during the outbreak of the virus and yet…Xiu had never called back to ask how the Doctor was doing. At least Lazarus had come over to apologize to Hazeline...
Lazarus…
Xiu felt a moment’s uncertainty as the image of Lazarus came before him. He wondered if he’d meet the Sigel today. Lazarus lived in the Lab after all and Christmas had been a long time ago…
Floating into the Lab’s lobby, Xiu was surprised to find it rather empty. But the Lab was open wasn’t it? He’d just flown into the building after all. Xiu wondered if he should make his way to Tsu’s office. He knew the way after all…
But that would be almost intruding wouldn’t it? Perhaps he had better wait for someone to come by and state his business, that seemed more appropriate at least. Thus making up his mind, Xiu floated patiently by the lobby’s front desk in the hopes of meeting one of the staff soon…

Holding the small stack of papers vertically in his hands, Lazarus gently let them fall onto the desk surface to tidy and align them up nicely. These are the progress reports about the Raevan created with the self-replicating virus fel essence, and Kyou had instructed Lazarus to make a copy and give it to Alex before he retired into his room for an afternoon nap. And that was what the Sigel did. After he finished rearranging them in order, he held the stack of paper up neatly and exited Kyou's office.
To tell the truth, he was still unsure if what Kyou did with the virus fel essence was the correct decision or not. His wary eyes stared at the Raevan tank in the middle of the room as he floated across the laboratory. Deep inside, he still have the gut feeling that the damned fel essence should just be buried within a secure box and deep in the earth somewhere, not to see daylight ever again. But it was too late to change anything now, the Raevan is already forming in the tank. You can't undo what had been done. Sighing softly he exited the laboratory to resume his current task - delivering the papers to Alex's office.
Alex isn't in today, so Lazarus will just have to let himself in and put the report on her desk. However, as he approached closer and closer to the lobby area, he realized that it wasn't empty.
"Xiu?" The Sigel said as he opened the glass door to the lobby. Realizing that Xiu was there, he got a bit nervous and looked around to see if Hazeline was here. But there was no one in sight except for the white Frei, he was alone. "What are you doing here?" he asked curiously.

Well…he had been waiting for a good ten minutes now and there was no sight of anyone…yet. Xiu folded his arms and gave his lips a thoughtful purse. Perhaps he should have called after all. It was just that…it seemed like a good idea at that time, Hazeline passing through the Lab on the way to her convention and in the excitement, Xiu had never assumed that the Lab could be this quiet.
The opening of a door followed by the sound of rustling paper made the white frei turned around and Xiu was surprised to see that it belonged to Lazarus. Feeling intimidated by the impressive Sigel all of a sudden, Xiu flared his wings a little. He had never been alone with Lazarus before. Well…theoretically he had but Lazarus had pretty much ignored him when he was a newborn.
When the Sigel enquired his purpose of being there, Xiu was…for a moment, stunned. “Err…well…Hazeline was passing by and I thought I’d like to take a look at the medical books here and perhaps…borrow some, if I may…,” said Xiu feeling silly. What were the chances of them letting him have a look at them after all? Medical books were expensive and only selected stores sold them.. Feeling embarrassed, Xiu flicked his wings a little. “And uhh…Hazeline wanted to get rid of these,”
Oh goodness…did he really say that?
“I-I meant…Hazeline thinks that there’s enough cookies at home to last us a lifetime and uhh… I brought some over…,” said Xiu lifting up a bag containing some unopened cookie bottles. There had been simply too many arriving from various friends and family that Xiu suspected most were going to end up uneaten or thrown away. “ Thought the Lab might like them… Dr. Kyou likes sweet things, right?” enquired Xiu recalling the Doctor’s fondness of sweet things during his stay in the Lab. “Errr…has he been well?”

Arching his eyebrows, Lazarus peered inside the bag that Xiu lifted. It was true, there were at least three clear bottles with red caps filled with various cookies - pineapple tarts, chocolate cookies and what seemed like some sort of soft butter cookies at the bottom of the bag, along with some mandarin oranges as well. He had seen some Asian grocery stores selling these when he was grocery shopping. Holding the stack of paper with one arm against his chest, he extended his free hand and took the bag from Xiu, his fingers brushed against Xiu's briefly. "Thank you, Kyou would appreciate these." The Sigel said curtly, the corners of his lips curled up slightly in a polite smile. "He is fine, currently napping in his room at the moment, do you want to go see him?" He inquired, nodding his head in the direction of the lab.
"But as for the medical books..." His expression dropped as he turned around to face Xiu squarely again. "Tsu is not in today, and his office is locked. All the medical books are in his room." He hated to disappoint the white Frei, but there is nothing he could do about it. Tsu has a habit of locking his door when he is not around, unlike Alex. Only Kyou has the master key to the whole building. But something told Lazarus that Xiu would be against stealing it from Kyou to gain access to Tsu's office. It would be like trespassing. So the Sigel decided to not suggest it.
There was something else that was bugging him though. "Uhm, may I ask? Where is Hazeline?" He had been wondering that for a while. If Hazeline was the one who suggested Xiu to drop by with the cookies, logically speaking she should be the person who dropped him off here as well, since the bookstore where she and Xiu lived in are not exactly nearby. It just seemed odd that Xiu is here alone. His eyes shifted nervously to look at the front doors, as if Hazeline would appear there any moment now.

Xiu watched as Lazarus shifted his hold on the stack of papers to make room for the bag of cookies. It was almost an art really to be able to manage such a huge pile of papers in one hand while holding onto the bag with the other. Xiu was about to offer the Sigel help when Lazarus smiled and said that the Doctor was resting in his room and whether Xiu had wanted to see him.
“Oh no, please, I would not want him disturbed,” said Xiu hurriedly with a shake of his head lest Lazarus decided to wake the Doctor up. The poor Doctor probably needed all the sleep time he could get if judging by the sparse way he slept during his search for the cure was any indication.
“And oh dear, that is a shame,” said Xiu with a slight droop of his wings at the mention of Tsu being away. He was rather hoping that he’d be able to meet Zave again. “Perhaps I shall try another day then; maybe call before coming in,” said Xiu.
Lazarus however, seemed to have other things on his mind and enquired about Hazeline. Xiu was surprised. The Sigel seemed…nervous.
… … … Lazarus was not…afraid of Hazeline was he? Sure, the young woman might be a little stiff and old fashioned but…Hazeline wasn’t exactly an intimidating person. Xiu found himself staring oddly at Lazarus.
“Hazeline is not here at the moment, Lazarus,” said Xiu politely. “She dropped me off here on the way to a convention on plants. Were you hoping to speak with her or something? She’d be back in, give or take an hour but… is there anything I could…help you with to pass the time for the moment?” said Xiu sheepishly. “I forgot to bring my book along and I simply can’t do nothing…,”

Lazarus actually felt relieved when Xiu said that Hazeline is away in a conference, a soft sigh escaping his lips. However, he tried to resume his composure when he noticed Xiu staring at him oddly. His eyes darted away uncomfortably from Xiu's for a moment before regaining eye contact, even perhaps a little bit shyly.
"Uhm, there really aren't anything that needed help at the moment." He said. He just checked the Raevan tanks about 30 minutes ago, before he prepared the copy of report for Alex. He had also cleaned the dishes in the sink and took out the garbage earlier. Lazarus racked through his brain to think of something that Xiu could do, but still came up with nothing. The only thing he needed to do now is to deliver the report still, and perhaps put the bag of cookies into the kitchen. But he don't need help with that.
"If you don't mind, maybe we could go wander around the market street nearby? There's a nice small park where you can see the ocean around there too." The Sigel suggested. Getting out of the Lab for a bit might be nice. If Xiu hadn't showed up, he probably would just went back into his room and watched TV until he is bored or something anyway, can't beat hanging out with a friend. Besides, he suddenly had the urge to see the ocean and smell the sea breeze.
However, he haven't forgotten his tasks still. "But before we go, I still need to put these in Alex's office." Lazarus said as he motioned towards the stack of papers he is holding. "And probably drop these in the kitchen as well." The plastic bag ruffled gently as he lifted it up a bit, the heavy contents stretching the flimsy material a little.

Xiu tilted his head a little as a sigh of what was possibly relief escaped Lazarus’ lips when he knew that Hazeline was not around. Was the Sigel really that uncomfortable with Hazeline? Well… Xiu guessed that it couldn’t be helped. Hazeline in turn was also a little stiff around Lazarus. For a moment the white frei was torn between his guardian and his friend. Matters such as these were aggravating!
Xiu frown and only realized that he had been staring at the Sigel when Lazarus had made eye contact with him. Lazarus had looked a little…sheepish? Immediately the white frei found himself looking away embarrassedly as well. Oh dear… he had let his thoughts wander again… Xiu wondered if the Sigel thought him odd.
Apparently not, for as soon as he had turned his gaze away, Lazarus had asked if he’d like a visit to the market street. Xiu turned to Lazarus with a sheepish smile. “That sounds wonderful, Lazarus. I’ve never been to the park and the ocean here before. How about this though; let me take those cookies to the kitchen? I know the way well enough and we could meet again in the lobby,” Xiu offered with a smile. “No point in going twice the distance after all….,”

The firey Sigel considered it for a moment, and nodded in response. "Yeah we could do that." After all, Xiu seemed helpful and he normally doesn't mind extra help. Besides, the white Frei was right, he had stayed in the Lab for a certain period of time before. The Laboratory could almost be considered as a second home for him, he wouldn't have problem getting lost in here.
Lifting the bag of cookies up, he handed it back to the white Frei. "We'll meet back in the lobby soon." He said, smiling.
And with that, Lazarus turned around and started to head towards Alex's office, which was significantly closer to the lobby than the kitchen. Alex is not in the office now, probably working on some stuff for her other job as a zoologist. His tanned hand reached out to hold the doorknob, and he was glad that it was unlocked, like always. But before he let himself in, he glanced back towards Xiu, watching him go in the direction of the kitchen. The Sigel stared thoughtfully for a moment, although he wasn't sure why he was staring as well. When he realized this, he peeled his eyes away immediately, feeling a bit embarrassed. What was he doing? If Xiu saw him doing this, he would probably think him odd. So he was thankful that the Frei had his back to him all this time.
The papers, right. Finally turning the doorknob, he quietly let himself into Alex's office. A fresh bouquet of white roses sat in a glass vase on the Italian woman's desk, the sunlight shining through the window gave the room a peaceful and comfortable atmosphere. Lazarus always preferred Alex's office over Kyou's, he don't know why Kyou needed to make his room so corporate and gloomy. Not bothering to close the door behind him, he just left it ajar and headed towards her desk, this would only take a moment anyway. Carefully he placed the stack of papers neatly in the center of the desk, 'Virus Raevan Progress Report' written neatly on the cover.
There, it's done. That was pretty simple. Taking one last glance in the office, Lazarus exited the doors and started to head towards the lobby. Xiu was not there yet, so he just lingered for a bit, looking at the street view outside.

The trip down to the kitchen was nostalgic to say the least. The white frei gave his wings a thoughtful flick as he floated down the empty corridor to the kitchen. Had it really been four months since the virus outbreak? It seemed impossible to believe that all that had happened last year. The hallway looked the same, the kitchen, when Xiu entered, smelled the same and…as Xiu placed the bag of cookies down and took the oranges out, even the placement of the kitchen’s utensils were the same. Odd how one came to remember such small details…
Or perhaps it was just him….
That was a troubling thought…
Floating out of the kitchen, Xiu noticed that Lazarus was already in the lobby. Hastening the last couple of steps, Xiu gave a small wave as he neared the Sigel. Lazarus seemed to be interested in the view of the street outside. Well, it seemed like a nice day outside and there were many gaians already out and about.
“Hey, did you wait long?” enquired Xiu with an apologetic smile. “I was…just thinking how...everything still looks the same but…well…different at the same time. Err…I’m older for one thing,” said Xiu with a sheepish laugh. “Sorry, a moment of nostalgia, Lazarus. Oh gosh, I’m behaving like an old man and I’m not even two years old…,” said Xiu with a shake of his head.
“But that aside, shall we head out?” said Xiu looking eagerly at the crowds of humans walking on the streets outside. Hey, perhaps he could even snag an early lunch. That would save time, definitely.
Floating to the Lab’s entrance, Xiu followed Lazarus down to Market Street; occasionally snagging a bite of innocence from passersby. It was good feeding and the white frei was soon feeling rather contented and possibly a little sleepy. But Lazarus was good company Xiu found himself floating rather contentedly beside the fiery Sigel. True, there was the occasional stare from the humans but Xiu ignored them. He was getting used to it a little now and as long as they were not pointing and throwing rude remarks, the white frei could possibly ignore them well enough. Turning to Lazarus, Xiu chuckled. “So…this is how you spend your days, Lazarus? Healthy air, great scenery, a wonderful …err…nevermind,” said Xiu realizing that he’d almost said ‘banquet selection’. “Err…fresh air and beautiful scenery, yes…,”

"You're not old." Lazarus remarked with a light chuckle as they exit the Lab building. The sun was bright that day, but not bright enough to blind, just a comfortable glow. Flowers buds are starting to pop up here and there, and what remains of the snow had almost melted away, signifying the very beginning of Spring. The Sigel took a deep breath as they floated idly towards the Market Street, the air was indeed cooling and refreshing.
"I go to the Market Street about two or three times a week, mostly for grocery shopping, sometimes to buy food like for dinner, or the desserts that Kyou ate nearly everyday." He laughed at the notion, his voice bright and clear. The good scientist do so love his sweets dearly. Even if he is busy with work and needed sleep desperately, he would still rummage for sweets in the kitchen. Lazarus was sure if desserts would disappear from the face of the planet entirely one day, Kyou would die. "The Market Street is actually a large cluster of shop lots around the area, its not really just a street." Raising his arm, he pointed at the four rows of shop lots not far in front of them. "The park is the area in front of that row of shops there." He said as he pointed to the left most shop lot facing away from them but towards the ocean instead. All of a sudden he felt like a tour guide of sorts, and he kind of liked it.
No one was really leading as they approached the buildings, but it was apparent that they were heading towards Market Street first. The street was framed by numerous shop lots that sold a variety of items and offer a large selection of services. There were a lot of stalls along the wide street as well, selling all sorts of things from children's toys to fruits and accessories. As they floated idly down the street, Lazarus took interest in looking at all the stalls around him. He never got tired of looking at them, always having something new and interesting to offer.
Lazarus paused in front of a fruit stall for a moment, enjoying the rich colors of the fruits. Pink guavas cut in half, oranges, red apples, grapes, and bright purple dragonfruits.
The stall owner noticed the Raevan duo and quickly picked up a half-cut peach. Slicing two generous pieces from the fruit, she offered it to the Raevans. "Try a piece!" She said enthusiastically, a bright smile adorning her face. "These are fresh, just came in today." She wasn't sure that the white one without a stomach could eat her fruits, but if she don't ask, she wouldn't know for sure.

“Hey, what a coincidence! I often help with the groceries as well,” said Xiu with a soft chuckle. “It’s fun and…it has improved my mathematics by leaps and bounds; particularly in the subtracting department,” said Xiu with a shake of his head. Honestly, who’d thought that food items could cost so much….
The white frei was glad that he did not need to feed like the humans do. True, the blood consumption had cost a pretty penny but it was only once a year and Hazeline had managed to obtain it from the lab. Xiu wondered if there was a way to lessen that expenditure a little. Perhaps he should get himself a job to help supplement that…
Lazarus had by this time moved on to describing Market Street and Xiu looked with interest at the direction indicated by the Sigel; particularly in the direction of the park. Parks were great places to be in for a quiet read. Xiu half wished that he’d be able to visit the park someday. Perhaps sometime in the future with Hazeline? That seemed like a nice idea.
They had entered Market Street by then and the ‘street’ was even more crowded than it had looked from the distance. There were people and wares everywhere ranging from toys for the very young to home made remedies for the very old. Xiu watched with interest as a trinket seller skillfully carved the names of buyers onto items such as keychains, mugs, doorsigns and wooden whistles. There were also a wide selection of foodstalls displaying their goods and smells, both tantalizing and offensive waffled through the busy street. Lazarus had stopped by to admire some of the vibrantly coloured fruits for sale.
Sensing a potential customer, the fruits seller had immediately offered the two Raevans a slice. Xiu shook his head politely. Eating human food was not something the white raevan particularly enjoyed but perhaps the Sigel would. Xiu waited while the woman offered the Sigel a taste of the peach she had just sliced.

Unlike Xiu though, Lazarus took a slice from the fruit seller, thanking her as he took a bite from the peach. It was pretty good! Juicy, fresh and sweet. His eyes lighten up as he nodded at the owner of the fruit stall.
The lady smiled at Lazarus's acknowledgement of the fruit's deliciousness. "You want to buy some? It's only two gold each." She said as she pointed at the price board stuffed among the peaches. "Straight from the best orchards around, these are of high quality and delicious."
Unfortunately for the fruit vendor though, Lazarus took an almost audible gulp as he swallowed the last bit of peach in his mouth. Two gold per peach? That's some expensive peaches there. The Sigel stared incredulously at the peaches aligned nicely on the diagonal rack, all wrapped nicely in their protective foams to prevent bumps and bruises. They do look expensive now that he took a good look at them. Normally he could get half a dozen apples with that price.
Nodding politely at the stall owner once with the most polite smile he could muster, he thanked her again and decided to get out of here before things get worse. So he took Xiu's wrist in his hands and almost dragged him away back into the crowded streets. It was there that he let out a sigh of relief. "Good thing we got out of there, those fruits were expensive." He said, catching his breath as they continued down the street. Suddenly he realized that he was still holding onto the white Frei's wrist. "I-I'm sorry." The Sigel apologized in a hurry, a small blush crept onto his face. "I hope I didn't hurt you." God knows he's not the most gentle person out there, he hoped he wasn't gripping too tight on his wrist.

Well, this was certainly unexpected. One moment the Sigel was quietly enjoying a slice of peach and the next he was dragging Xiu away from the fruit seller by the wrist. The white frei flared his wings instinctively and winced as he felt the Sigel’s firm grip upon his wrist. Obviously Lazarus was pretty desperate to get away from said seller as the Sigel had not once spared her a backward glance. Instead, the Sigel had opted to push his way through the crowded street. It was all a little embarrassing really. People were staring at the two raevans as they made their way through the crowd and away from the fruit seller like some kind of fugitives…or something.
Once they were quite a safe distance away from the fruit seller and her expensive peaches, Lazarus had slowed down sufficiently to catch his breath. The white frei was feeling a little breathless himself; having had to tow along behind the Sigel as he was being led by the wrist. Lazarus must have noticed this as well as he’d immediately released his hold and looking embarrassed, apologized to the white frei.
“N-No…think nothing of it, Lazarus,” said Xiu withdrawing his hand from the Sigel’s grip. Rubbing it a little, Xiu shifted his wings slightly before folding them once more. “I-I guess those fruits were a little expensive…,” ventured the white frei uncertainly. He had never bought peaches before so the definition of expensive for said fruit was a little beyond the white raevan. But the look of Lazarus face when he had been told of the fruit’s price was enough to convince Xiu that the fruit was very expensive.
But surely they were not going to head back so soon just because of a couple of fruits, right? There was still half an hour before Hazeline was due to pick him up. Scanning the street, Xiu then pointed to another lane leading off towards the park. “Perhaps…we could take that route then, Lazarus?” suggested the white raevan.

Although Xiu said it was alright, Lazarus still felt a little bad for hurting him, judging by his rubbing of his wrist. So when Xiu suggested that they head towards the lane, he was quick to oblige. "Sure." He said as he followed close by Xiu.
The lane that they just entered was smaller compared to the main street, the crowd on this lane was more sparse as well, there weren't any stalls on this street except for one. It was situated outside a bakery called 'Angel Cake Bakery', and it seemed like the stall belonged to the bakery as well. A slightly chubby man in a chef outfit caught sight of them as they got closer. His gaze was that of surprise when he saw that they didn't have a complete body, but it turned into one of friendliness as he cracked into a wide smile. Seemed like he won't stop at nothing to promote his products after all. "Why hello there, gentleman and..." He paused in his sentence as he stared at Xiu for a moment. "...miss. Would you like to try some of our freshly baked fruit tartlets?" He motioned towards the delicately stacked fruit tartlets on the stall. "Only two gold for half a dozen!"
Lazarus actually haven't passed through this lane for a while, he always used another lane closer towards the Lab when he wanted to head in the direction of the park. The bakery is probably very new because he don't remember it being here the last time he passed by here. And that's saying something because he had went through almost all the bakeries on Market Street for Kyou's sake. Perhaps he could try getting some desserts from here for Kyou to try out.
The fruit tartlets might be a good start as Lazarus approached the stall with Xiu. There were kiwis, cherries, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, grapes and even pineapples tartlets arranged neatly. He had to admit that they look rather cute with their small bite sizes, and two gold for half a dozen is actually not too expensive. The Sigel found himself increasingly interested to try some, his appetite probably triggered by the piece of peach he ate earlier. "How about it Xiu? Want to try some?" He asked, not noticing that the bakery staff mistaken Xiu for a girl.
