This is a private RP between:
Kenth and Xiu

Day : A breezy morning; first day of the year!

Where: Supermarket
PostPosted: Fri Jan 01, 2010 3:22 pm

It was the first day of the New Year and Xiu found himself humming softly to the various product jingles that were blaring over the supermarket’s loudspeaker. The store was relatively empty which was good because that meant that the line at the paying counter would not be long. Xiu suspected that the reason behind the relatively empty store on such a fine morning could be due to the overdrinking and partying of the humans on the last day of 2009. Which amused the frei. Humans would find just about any reason to be able to down unhealthy quantities of alcohol and behaved like mad creatures.

“Hmm…just needs milk and I’m done,” murmured the white frei as he checked the grocery list the housekeeper had prepared. Of all the needed items, fresh milk had the word ‘important’ marked beside it. No doubt the housekeeper had plans to use the milk for her cooking later on. Xiu smiled. Naturally one would go for the most important item first before picking up the rest of the groceries but…it was also true that milk as well as other diary products spoilt easily. Besides, Xiu was sure there were enough milk cartons about to not cause a problem…

It was rather strange to step out of his little comfort zone after a long period of isolation. He could have gone out during Christmas, but Kenth found himself more at ease hiding inside of his office so that he was not too distracted by the holiday spirit outside. Now that everything had calmed down, Kenth also finally relived of his workload. To go out was not his favorite way of relaxing, but it was necessary, for all his calorie providing materials were exhausted during the long winter break. The fortunate thing was that the grocery store that he knew of was open even on the first day of the new year. The convenient store was, surely, convincing in this case.

It took him no longer than twenty minutes to walk to the store. For once, Kenth felt rather cheerful breathing in the cold and fresh winter air. Shopping without a car meant that he needed to buy as few as needed so that he wouldn't be overloaded on his way back home. For now, all he needed were some quick and healthy food to get him pass the rest of the break. When everything returned to normal he would be able to call up transportation to shop more things to store for the future.

With mind full of his work still, Kenth arrived at the grocery store. Walking pass each stand the doctor picked up few things here and there. Without having specific things in mind, the shopping experience turned out to be much more relaxing and straight-forward. Eventually Kenth stopped at the dairy product section. He frowned a little at the rather empty racks---looked like the store clerk was too lazy to stock up on missing items---and at the lone milk carton that sat in the middle of the large fridge full of nothingness. Milk was one of the important things he needed, daily breakfast for him, to be precise. Kenth wasn't keen on taking the last milk left in the stand, but that was what he had to do. Without a second thought he reached for the carton, grabbing it just as another hand was about to do the same. Kenth didn't have the time to see who was the owner of the other hand, although by his instinct the doctor quickly tossed the milk into his basket, marking the product his.

The other person can blame his unluckiness, but Kenth was not about to give up the milk.

Xiu blinked as the last of the milk carton vanished before his eyes. His hand was mere inches away from it when the hand of another had rudely taken the desired product away from him. Truly! Was common courtesy that hard to find these days?

Sufficiently put off, the white frei turned to face the person who had the audacity to do such a thing when his jaw fell open at the sight of the perpetrator. He knew this human!

“Dr. Larine?” exclaimed Xiu in a startled voice, anger forgotten for the time being. “W-What are you doing here?”

Which was a rather stupid question to ask now that Xiu had time to think about it. It was obvious from the basket that the Doctor was carrying that he had been grocery shopping like Xiu but unlike Xiu, he had the milk carton.

“How…are you?” asked Xiu tentatively, not sure on the manner in which he should greet the Doctor. Kenth had taken his milk after all. “Fancy meeting you here, Doctor,”

Hm?

Kenth tilted his head a little, not exactly willing to turn and face the Raevan. The need to grab the milk was too immense for him to see who it was, but now that he had won the carton, the doctor realized how awkward a situation he had gotten himself into. The other person(?) knew him. Kenth had imagined him be one of his patient, but it was not the case. In the corner of his eyes he could spot two black horns coming out of the other's head, which was covered with white hair in a shade similar to his. There was no such person in Kenth's memory who had the same feature, at least, not one of his patients. Yet the doctor knew who it was, because this creature had left quite a strong impression when they first met.

Finally turning to face Xiu, Kenth gave the raevan an amused face. There was, however, scorn hidden behind the pretentious expression. The grocery shopping was supposed to be quick! It seemed like everything was against his will today. Kenth lifted his basket as if to prove a point and shrugged. It was more appropriate for him to ask the same question---what was the Raevan doing here? Shopping? Shouldn't that be something his guardian should be doing? For a moment Kenth had a funny image of a dog driving a car in which its owner sat back in. To compare Xiu with a regular pet would be insulting, but the doctor still found the current situation strange.

"Yes, what a surprise." Kenth replied in a flat tone, not forgetting that Xiu was the one who tried to take away his milk carton. The muscles in his arms tensed a little. It would only add more awkwardness to the situation if the Raevan dared to ask for the milk. He had to be prepared for it.

Although the Doctor was smiling, Xiu couldn’t help but feel that their meeting here was not something Kenth was overly delighted about. In fact, the subtle undertones of the Doctor’s stiff gesture more than hinted that Dr. Larine was not pleased to see the white frei at the moment. Xiu was puzzled. Dr. Larine did not look like a person whose career and home was divided into two neat segments (actually, it looked like Kenth’s career took up most of his segments; home and others) so it could not be that Kenth was unhappy to see someone he’d met while in office.

So…

Was the Christmas present they got Kenth that horrible? Xiu knew that not many people use notebooks nowadays but surely it could be of some use (like being placed under a table leg?). Or perhaps the comment that Kenth was old got to the Doctor…
Xiu guessed that that might be a little tasteless…he’ll work to remedy that in the future.

It was then that Xiu noticed the slight shift in the other’s basket holding arm and in it was…the milk carton Xiu had come to obtain. Shifting his wings uneasily, Xiu battled with the thought of asking Kenth if the milk was urgent and the thought of leaving the Doctor be. But…but…

“Er…Dr. Larine…w-would you be needing that mi-milk urgently?” asked Xiu, his face turning an obvious shade of red from embarrassment. “B-Because it’s rather important that I …complete this grocery list…,”

Oh here it comes...

Kenth was prepared, or he thought he was. His preparation took a great hit at the Raevan's overly reluctant way of questioning. From the way Xiu looked, Kenth knew it must have taken a lot for him to make the decision to ask, which meant the milk must have been really important. But how important could it be? Xiu said he needed to complete the grocery list, which must mean his it was a task bestowed by his guardian. The doctor did not know what kind of person Hazeline was from the brief meeting last time. She acted relatively normal back then, and treated the Raevan nicely. Even if Xiu couldn't complete the list Kenth doubt the woman would do any harm to the Raevan...wait, why was he even worrying about that?

Taking a deep breath Kenth readjusted a little to prevent himself from sinking deeper into his pointless flurry of thoughts. He, unlike Xiu, who was caring and compassionate, was not Mr. nice guy. Kenth decided to hold on tight to his claim of ownership of the milk carton---it wasn't urgent, but he needed it too! It would be his breakfast for the next few days after all. With such (a weak) determination the doctor stared at Xiu and nodded, hiding the carton even further behind.

"I need it to continue my research." The word sounded absolutely ridiculous even in the doctor's mind. It was true, although the sentence could easy make the Raevan think the wrong way. Kenth coughed a little and corrected, "I mean, I need it so I can have energy to work in the morning."

That sounded about right. The doctor swallowed "no you are not getting my milk" back down, and turned, ready to step away any moment.

Judging from the manner which Kenth hid the carton of milk further from view, Xiu knew the answer before he heard it. Kenth was not going to relinquish his hold of the milk. Xiu wondered why he’d even attempted to ask the stoic Doctor in the first place. Oh well, at least he tried. Wings drooping slightly, Xiu nodded at the Doctor’s reply, regardless of how odd it sounded. Was Kenth trying to justify his reason for not allowing Xiu to have the milk? It could not be helped then. Kenth did obtain the milk first and it was his every right to keep it.

Floating a couple of steps back from the Doctor, Xiu gave Kenth a tentative wave; their meeting pretty much ended when Dr. Larine turned away from the white frei. “Umm…well…I guess I’d better take my leave too, Dr. Larine and uh… a happy new year to you, sir,” said Xiu before turning to head towards the counter. "See you around, I guess,"

Kenth paused, debating if he should simply leave or say something else to the Raevan. The situation felt uncomfortable to him. He was the one who won the milk carton, but somehow he felt defeated. There was no doubt that Xiu was feeling the same, judging from his tone of voice. Kenth could not tolerate, however, the incompleteness of the conversation. If he just left, he'd be fleeing from the scene. No, he must hold the winner's place firm by setting down a solid conclusion. So after the thought process the doctor turned, clearing his throat as if trying to make an announcement.

"There is...a smaller convenient store nearby. If you really need the milk, you can check it out there." It wasn't a grocery store like this one, but one that sold ready-to-eat snacks and drinks. Kenth visited the place once, and thought he saw milk there. Granted, they weren't the half-gallon or full gallon milk, but rather ones in smaller box cartons, single serving sized. The Raevan had never mentioned what the milk was used for, so it was at least a valid suggestion...to Kenth, at least. "If you turn left out from this store and walk straight, should take you around ten minutes or so." Kenth glanced briefly at the Raevan's ribbons and sighed, "well, for me, at least."

Having thought that his meeting with the Doctor had some to an end, Xiu was about to float off when the sound of someone clearing his throat made Xiu stop to look around. Apparently the Doctor still had a few words left to say before leaving.

Guessing it wouldn’t hurt to hear the human out, Xiu was surprised when Kenth suggested an alternate store where milk might be obtained. Blue eyes matched the Doctor’s own as the frei sought to understand the perplexing human a little. Why was Dr. Larine doing this and…

No Xiu realized. Dr. Larine was under no obligation to give the information he was giving now but he was giving it nonetheless. The white frei smiled a genuine smile after the Doctor had finished speaking, blue eyes betraying just a hint of amusement on the raevan’s part at the human’s complexity.

“Thank you, Dr. Larine,” said Xiu earnestly. “I shall certainly look into it,”

Having said so, the white raevan politely took his leave of the white haired Doctor, glad that the tension between the both of them seemed to have abated a little since their unexpected meeting at the dairy products section. The white frei found himself wondering if he’d be meeting the Doctor again in the future as he exited the store and made his way towards the convenient store Dr. Larine had spoken of.
