Just paint the picture of a perfect place
They got it better than what anyone's told you
They'll be the King of Hearts, and you're the Queen of Spades
Then we'll fight for you like we were your soldiers

I know we've got it good, but they got it made
And the grass is getting greener each day
I know things are looking up, but soon they'll take us down,
Before anybody's knowing our name.

My name is Batholith, and welcome to my world.

User ImageGeneral Information:
Name: Batholith
Aliases: Bath, Dream-Eyes (only by his old boss, so call him this at your own risk)
Gender: Male
Song: All the Right Moves by One Republic
Likes: Respect, being valued
Dislikes: Being hurt, being forced to beg for his life
About: Batholith and his twin were separated when their bowls first appeared, and their lives took different paths after that. Bath joined a gang, where he tried to gain the respect of his boss. He did eventually gain a high position, but unfortunately, with the job came being his boss's punching bag when things went wrong. Before long, he wasn't just being beaten up--his boss would humiliate him by forcing him to make out, and worse things.

Eventually, Bath was beaten so harshly that he was dumped off a cliff into a rushing river--left for dead by the people he trusted. He was washed on shore and was taken to the hospital in the city where the Shop is located. He's now hoping to make a new life for himself.

His past life has left him bitter, short-tempered, and somewhat violent. Above all else, he fears meeting his old boss again.

Batholith's World

Relations

Andesite--Best guess is that he's my brother. Like, twin brother. He's a loud-mouthed wimp.

Friends

Enemies

"Boss"--...I don't want to talk about him. [Shudders]

Epic--housemate. >C He called me pretty.

Acquaintances

Jack--housemate. He wants to be a criminal, but he claims that having help just hinders his style. I think he's just a wannabe.

Reb--robot who lives in the attic of the garage north of the house. He's...weird. He says he's running away from something, too--an army, apparently. He says he's a deserter of sorts. He thinks I look ugly but strong.

Rec--short for "Recitative." She's an "angel of music," and comes from a place where she was expected to sit down, shut up, and obey. She was very kind to me when she had no reason to.

Konani--pushy male I met at the shop. Seems to think we should be friends for no reason. >.>

Lucerne--pushy female who tried to come onto me. She says she's being stalked by a "stalker" who uses poisons. None of my business. (And I do not need to get laid!)

Pan--a no-nonsense nurse, the one who rescued me. She also lives at our house, but I don't see her that often due to work. I don't know how to say thank you to her...

Liz--another housemate, Pan's second-cousin, according to Reb. She loves the law, but is too afraid to join the police force 'cause she's got criminals in her family. She hasn't turned me in, which is a good thing...I really don't know how to thank her for that.

Foggy--one of the unofficial heads of the household. He claims he knows Geyser better than anyone in the shop, and he seems to understand how the shop works on its fundamental level. The whole idea creeps me out, though, so I won't be hanging out much around him.

Monty--another unofficial head of the household. She's boisterous and seems to think that there's such diversity in the House that everyone should be treated the same. I wouldn't mind that, but she likes to mock people. At least she doesn't compliment me on my appearance, or give me a nasty nickname.

Recognize me? Yeah, I’ll bet you do. Probably from a few wanted posters, vague descriptions. “Wanted: The members of the Alleyvein Gang. Leader: Male half-breed with orange and grey markings. Second-In-Command: Red and grey male with braided tail.” That’s me. No, not was. I know who I am, and I’m not ashamed of it. But you’re not going to turn me in. Everyone says you’re a law girl, Liz, but I’ve heard a bit of talk about you. Your granddaddy’s a lockpick and a thief, and you know damn well that sometimes there’s no option but crime.

Besides, they don’t want me in that life anymore.

No, not my parents. I never knew my parents. I’m alone in the world. I haven’t got any family. I was found by some other kits, who took me to the Alleyveign Gang. Their boss sneezed on me when I sparkled, and I joined the gang right then and there.

There are all types in those gangs. And people sort other people into other groups no matter where they’re from. I was pretty, so everyone thought I was stupid and weak. I showed them fast that I wasn’t stupid or weak. I showed ‘em so fast that they never even realized it. By the time I had been an adult for two months, I was already the second-in-command of the Alleyvein Gang. I was almost where I’d always wanted to be.

Then I hit a rock. Yeah, our boss. I’m not gonna rat him out. There are some things you do, some things you don’t do unless you’re shoved, and some things you never do no matter what else has been done to you. I’m not gonna tell you his name. I’m not gonna tell where his base is. I’m not going to tell you anything else about him except that he’s a sick b*****d. He knew whatever was going on—that’s how he’d stayed at the top for so long. He’d figured out what I was like, what I wanted and what I didn’t like. He figured out that I had brains and beauty, and I wasn’t so fond of the beauty part.

He complimented me some at first, but when I became his second, things took a turn for the worse. Whenever something didn’t go right in his life, he’d attack me. Punch me. Kick me. Bash my head against the wall. It didn’t matter what had happened, either—someone disrespected him, a job went south, someone got caught. It wasn’t even my fault—and when things went right, and I was obviously the one who did it, he didn’t compliment me. He knew what I wanted. I wanted respect. I wanted respect from him, and recognition that I was competent and could handle whatever came at me. But he never gave it. He knew what I wanted, and what I didn’t like, and the thing I didn’t like—still don’t like—before anything else is being judged on my looks.

People had already called me “Dream-Eyes” before. Not Boss, but everyone else. It was my nickname. Hell yeah it bothered me, but there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it. As lieutenant, I could knock the s**t out of anyone who thought they could still call me that. Except Boss. He could do whatever he wanted, and he decided for the first time ever that I needed to be put in my place, and that only started with the beatings. Then he started calling me Dream-Eyes. Then he started grabbing me after his beatings and pressing his lips against mine, flicking his tongue…

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuegh. I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want to think about it. Not that there’s anything wrong with two guys kissing. That’s alright. So long as they both want it, and that’s where it is. I didn’t like Boss. But he started telling me, loud enough for everyone else to hear, that he “like[d] the taste of [me].” That he liked to make me shiver, that the sound of my voice…Like I said, I don’t want to talk about it. And it wasn’t just his kisses. It was his touches, and his murmurings, and…

Not to say I put up with that crap. I talked back. I told him what I thought of him. I spent more time with the rookies and less time with Boss. Word is he started to get suspicious. I think that’s a crock of crap. I think he just liked the way I hung limp when I’d been pained and pleasured. So he beat the overloving crap out of me, did me like an old sock, and shoved me off a cliff into a river. I swam out, I came here.

Period. End of story.

“Swam out, my black, furry a**,” Pan snorted. Liz leaned closer to her second-cousin as the latter slathered peanut butter on her toast and took a bite. When she had finished chewing, Pan swallowed, wiped her mouth, and continued. “You saw him when he came here—he was a lot worse off when I first met him.”

“Oh?” Liz asked. She had told Pan what Batholith had told her when she got home from work early in the morning. She had felt the need to tell someone, and Pan was as good a person to tell as any. “You saw him when he first came in—ah, of course,” she murmured. “The hospital.”

Pan nodded. “Well, technically before that, really. I had a day off, so I figured I’d go kayaking upriver. I found him washed up on the shore about a half an hour north of here, where the river widens. I saw a bit of red fur in the distance and I drew up, thinking I might as well be friendly.

“Well, I saw he wasn’t moving and he didn’t look in great shape, so I drew up on shore and went over to investigate. He still had a pulse, but hoo boy, that was a miracle.” Liz patiently waited for Pan to elaborate. She didn’t have long to wait.

“Broken ribs, big, deep slashes that needed stitches, bloodied face, black eyes, crushed paws, and his legs had been fractured, too. One of his knees was broken, and he was covered in cuts and bruises. Internal bruising, too. I figured he’d just fallen into the river or something.” She smiled grimly. “Sounds like I wasn’t far off on that account.”

“Well, he was helped,” Liz said grimly. “Or hindered—would that be the right word?”

“Dunno. But he wasn’t in any condition to swim, I can tell you that, especially with a couple lungfuls of water. I’m surprised he was breathing. It was shallow.”

“So you think he was just washed up on shore? By the current?”

“There’s a current in that region. It should have washed him up on shore, if he was in the right part of it. I dunno, I don’t know rivers that well.” Pan finished off her toast. “I called emergency services. We were far away from a road, so they had to chopper him out. We’re the closest emergency hospital in the area, so I had plenty of opportunity to find out the full extent of his injuries. Dad, Uncle Ahiga, and Grandpa all said that it looked like he’d been beaten, not that he’d gone through rapids, but Bath refused to confirm anything.” She fell silent, staring at her plate.

Silence fell between them like weighted darkness. Finally Liz said what had to be said. “Sounds like he was beaten up, tumbled on the way down the cliff, and hit rapids,” she said. “Between here and Alec’s Peak are two days of whitewater rapids.”

Pan grunted noncommittally. “You love the law,” she said. “What are you going to do about him, Liz?”

Liz stared at the ceiling of the kitchen at the House of Mist thoughtfully. “Nothing,” she said finally. “I don’t think he wants to go back to crime. I think he wants to keep his head down and hope his old gang doesn’t find him. He’s harmless. Sure, he’s done bad things, but I wouldn’t feel right turning him back in so he can meet his old comrades and they can beat him up again. He doesn’t need that.”

“No, he doesn’t,” Pan agreed. She got up with a sigh. “Speaking of things we need, I need sleep. Night, Liz. Try not to worry about him—he’s just another hardass here.”

“Yeah,” Liz said, too quiet for Pan to hear. “Another hardass with a nasty past to run away from.”
