So, I just figured something out.

Let's assume for a second that we really were created by the will of a supreme divine all-powerful deity known to many a Christian as "God." Now, he created Adam and Eve and said "Be fruitful and multiply." And that's what we human beings do so well. We ******** like bunny rabbits. It's gotten to the point where around 8 million people are having sex at any given moment. There's also a whole lot of drama in people's lives. Work, children, family, war, racism, working towards peace, etc. And in the middle, we're having sex. It's like humanity is weaving together a story and in the middle of trivial bits, there are orgies.

That's when it hit me:

Humanity's existence is porn with plot.

God created us just to watch porn. Sick b*****d.

you make a good point;
Humans are animals. Animals live to reproduce. So of course when it all comes down to it, and you strip all of the politics and social brainwashing away, your basically left with killing and sex.
I liken humans more to parasites than animals. I mean, animals fend for themselves and adapt to new situations while humans are dependent on their system and often rely on it to ease or downright eliminate their own obstacles. If all the cities and technology disappeared tomorrow - buildings, transportation, telecommunications, money, everything - how many of us would be able to survive without our beloved host?

While you raise a good point, remember that we built our own host, it is simply a quality that one must factor in. if all of the technology that we had developed disappeared, the cycle would simply start over again. The people who shouldn't survive wouldn't; and those who did would eventually start to band together again, factions would be born over the generations, and eventually we'd be here once again. It is our tendency to do these things, our nature.

My point here is that I don't think you can belittle a bee for living in its hive.
The difference between a beehive and a city is that when a beehive gets destroyed, the victims work together to rebuild it and when a city gets destroyed, the victims fight amongst themselves for individual survival and exploit the laws of supply and demand for personal profit until the city is rebuilt for them by people who have the knowledge and resources. (I'm not saying that all people behave this way in a crisis, just that it's the general way I've seen disasters go.)

I don't believe that this behavior is a product of any natural process as much as it is a development of the concept of 'self' over the ages - would a bee give its life for its hive with a single sting, without hesitation, if it were concerned primarily with its own desires?

Regarding your question, I'd point you towards the army, or rather the general military.

The beehive runs in a perfect monarchy. Everyone has the same goal. returning to the original poster, that goal is actually not sex, it is to protect those that can reproduce (the queen). This is the exact reason a bee can and will sting suicidally, assuming bees are capable of this level of thought. XD

The goal of a human, is to find a mate and procreate, and then to defend and raise that family. bees don't have to worry about these matters.

Another point is that humans are indeed greedier than bees. This is certainly a benefit to us. Yes we work together, that is how the society is created, but in that cooperation is fierce, fierce conflict. Us fighting for extra profit is no different from Neanderthals fighting over food. We put ourselves first, and otherwise we would hardly be better off than the bees. If everyone was happy living a mediocre life (communism would actually work) and no progress would be made. Take everything for granted and improvement isn't necessary.
Interesting comparison with the army, especially since I'd consider the bee's death to be a natural form of population control. But bees don't go around invading other beehives because the other bees have opposing points of view about how to run a beehive, nor do they aspire to rid the world of the "evil" wasps and bears who would threaten their hives. A bee doesn't care about how much honey it's making in comparison to its peers or what those diabolical ursine terrorists are planning over on the other side of the forest. A bee just wants to pollinate flowers and feed its colony.

(And I really doubt the meaning of life is procreation. What, does that make everyone who can't or doesn't want to worthless? The meaning of life, imo, is to live. The desire to spread life is natural, but I think that's because the experience of life is one that wants to be shared, not because procreation is the sole point of existence.)

I don't really think greed is a benefit to the human race as much as it is a hindrance. I mean, I agree that adversity is vital to progress and necessity is the mother of invention, but do we really need 50 different brands of the exact same make of shoe, or computer, or television, etc.? I think that if people were less concerned with turning an immediate profit for self and more concerned with improving the quality of life for the entire society, they'd take more chances, get more done, and probably have a hell of a lot more fun, too.

...Though I kind of want to draw a bunch of bees standing around a water cooler bragging about their pollen quotas now. xd

"HEY, DID YOU SEE THE LEGS ON THE NEW SECRETARY? TALK ABOUT A SIX PACK!"
"Yeah, I'd love to take her back to my honeycomb and--"
"Oh, yeah, how big is your honeycomb? 6 cells? I think she'd rather come back to mine; it's a spacious 18 with a grub garden in the back. Honey talks, bitches."
"Yeah, but it doesn't make your stinger any bigger."

Gives a whole new meaning to ZZZZZING

1. who says our need to be hostile isn't natural population control?

2. I'd say that with a larger world view, and a higher level of thought, bees might do just that. Imagine if we didn't know about anything but the state we lived in. if your outside of Massachusets, i don't know you, and you don't know me, that sort of thing. In a more humble condition, a single hive, for instance, there is going to be significantly less dispute. and more progress for the whole. We are going to try to expand and populate more areas, etc. However, with human kind ruling over every corner of the Earth, there isn't much to that betters a small sect that doesnt hurt another, and thus we just fight over it.

Regarding greed, and self betterment, if it ends up being seen as a negative, it will eventually go into decline. That is the value of progress, after all. Good and bad things happen, and we keep going. When we discover that the immediate us may not be the best way to benefit us, we'll move on to bigger and better things.

So in that sense, the bees are stuck being bees, and we, due to our selfish pursuits (and to be fair, greater intelligence), can go forward.

also, i think those bee comics could be a lot of fun. XD

1) I agree that war is a form of population control. But I don't agree that it's a natural one. I think that war comes from two major motivations: for soldiers, it's the desire to protect something you love very much and the belief that it's the only way to do so. For the people who actually start the wars, convince other people to fight them, and stay safe in their homes while innocent but misguided people die to serve their ambitions... well, let's not get into that. In any case, I don't think it would happen at all if we weren't so afraid to die in the first place - even in the case of invasions, we wouldn't constantly be needing to expand if we weren't trying to live as long as possible and have as many kids as possible.

2) Or perhaps the bees are the ones operating on a higher level of thought. Perhaps they are on a level that understands that while the individual body will diminish and die, the collective colony can only grow richer from their experience. Perhaps a level that knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that their life as a bee isn't the only life they'll ever experience.

Of course, they could just be stupid and unmotivated because they're happy where they are (and to be honest I would prefer even that to the current human condition), but that would imply that humanity really is the best nature can do. I'd like to think that there's something better than this somewhere out there and that we don't have all the answers yet; why read the book when you already know how it ends?

Also, there would have to be a cameo from Irving the Socially Awkward Bee somewhere. xd
