As if his life hadn't gotten hectic enough, Antony thought a bit numbly as his father sat down on the desk in front of him, his own father had cornered him into an empty classroom after school. "Is there a problem, Father?" he asked as soon as it was obvious no one was going to save him.
Not that he needed saving from his father, of course.
It was just sometimes he would rather LIKE to be saved from his father.
"I found this in your room," Shade said, pulling out a small dagger from his pocket. How he had gotten it there without leaving a bulge, Antony had no idea. Nor had he ever seen the dagger in his life. Which was, he noted almost a bit too calmly, literally pulsating with energy. "This isn't a normal blade," Shade went on. His father was quite good at stating the obvious.
"It isn't mine, either," Antony said as he started to pack his things away.
"Then whose is it?" Shade asked.
Antony went still before looking around. There was no one there, so he figured he might as well. "By the way it's glowing I would assume that it belongs to Thanatos," he said blandly.
"Ask him to teach you," Thanatos said from behind Antony. It sent a cold chill down the teenager's spine and he turned to glare at the shinigami.
"Why in the world would I ask him to teach me how to use a soul blade?" he demanded.
"Because it was made for you!" Thanatos said cheerfully. He was lounging on one of the desks, sipping what looked to be alcohol, but was smoking. "You don't think I was just hanging around for shits and giggles, do you?"
"I was hoping you would stop hanging around entirely!"
"So it is a soul blade," Shade said, flipping the blade in the air as if it were a toy. It was barely a foot long all together, with a bone white handle, a black hilt, and a silver blade that glowed an eerie blue. "What's he want you to do with it? He's here, right?"
"You're going to be my assistant," Thanatos said. "It gets abit rowdy around here, and I figured since the ghosts were drawn to you already, you might as well send them on in my place."
"You want me to kill ghosts?"
"Exorcise," Thanatos said. "They'd be sent to their rightful place afterwards."
"Not interested," Antony said, waving him off.
"He'll do it," Shade said.
"What?" Antony asked.
"Even I get tired of hearing the ghost in the attic moaning all night, you know," Shade said, handing the blade over to Antony hilt first. "You're not killing living beings, right? So what's wrong with a few ghosts? Technically they're already dead."
"Excellent point!" Thanatos agreed. "And who better to teach you than your old man?"
"Excuse me, but I was planning on being a lawyer, not a soul reaper," Antony said stiffly. It didn't help that both Thanatos and Shade started laughing out loud.
"Then you lucked out!" Shade said. "Because it seems to me those jobs are practically the same to begin with!"
"The lawyer pays better," Antony muttered, fighting the urge to groan.

=Possession is 9/10ths of the Law= Prologue It started out innocently enough. Antony was once again hunched over his desk, writing up a report on his laptop. His eyes were slightly narrowed as he paused mid-sentence to pull up the internet and check his reference again. He was right, of course. He usually was. But he liked to double check. "Ah, you know, kid--" "Not now, Thanatos," he said without looking away from the computer. "But we might have a little problem," Thanatos said. "You see, I might have let him stay here a teeeennnssy bit too long--" "Who stay where?" Antony asked, still typing away. "Well, you don't know him, actually," Thanatos said. "But your old man did. Well, he did briefly. First off, I need to tell you that there are some species out there that live for an awfully long time. Not like humans. Humans live for a hundred, sometimes two hundred years if they're really stubborn. But some species live for thousands of years--" "Vampires?" Antony asked, turning finally to look at the shinigami. "Well, yes, them too, but there are others. Your old man, for one, is going to live at least twenty thousand years more. I don't even bother to look at his lifetimer anymore. It just puts you to sleep, the sand keeps flowing and flowing--" "You're getting distracted," Antony said. "Who is the 'him' that you let stay for too long?" "His name is Prince Rudolfo," Thanatos said. "He was the prince of an extinct race, that... had your father not been around, would still be living today. Literally. As in the same people that were alive then would be alive now, five hundred years later." "That's the most retarded story I've ever heard," Antony said, not even blinking. "Father's barely out of his twenties--" "You think so?" Thanatos asked. "He's in awfully good shape for someone five hundred years old." "Well, he would be, if he was only that old. He's actually closer to a thousand. Remember what I said about being old pals?" Austin just stared at the shinigami. "Look, how else do you think he taught you how to kill spirits so well?" Thanatos asked. "Okay..." Antony said. "But what does this have to do with me? You say you let this Prince Rudolph--" "Prince Rudolfo," Thanatos said. "Stay here for too long. Where exactly is here? In the living world? Or are we talking someplace closer?" "Oh, here and there," Thanatos said with a gaelic shrug. "I think he spent some time haunting mansions, took up being a spirit guide for a while, as well... And then there was the little girl, but we don't mention that." "What little girl?" Antony demanded. "We don't mention it." "Okay, fine, so again, what does this have to do with me?" Antony demanded. "Well, he's on Gaia now." "Then send him over to the other side." "That's the problem. I can't," Thanatos said. "You see, with some spirits there's always something that absolutely HAS to be done before they go on. Usually I'm strong enough to send them over even with that, but, like I told you, he was one of those long living guys." "So?" "It means he's extremely hardheaded, even as a spirit." "Then let him do what he has to do and send him on!" "Well, I could do that. But you probably wouldn't like it," Thanatos said. He looked so honest that it sent a shiver of cold down Antony's spine. "So what does he have to do?" Antony asked. "He has to kill your old man."

=Possession is 9/10ths of the Law= "A ghost can't kill someone," Antony said as he shoved yet another book into his bag. He was still chapped about the wanting to kill Shade comment. "It's physically impossible. The only reason I can touch them, or they can touch me, is because I'm... different." "Sometimes you don't need to touch someone to kill them," Thanatos said. Somehow he had gotten ahold of a Nintendo DS and was gaming as he spoke. "There's lots of ways to kill people. But for a ghost the most popular is scaring them to death." A lull of silence filled the room before Antony's shoulders started to shake. The next thing he knew he was howling with laughter, almost falling over onto his bed as he clutched his side. "I..." he said between giggles. "Would PAY to see that." "You have a very strange sense of humor," Thanatos complained, looking up from his game finally. "So, finally running away from home?" "I'm leaving while Jack's parents are in town," Antony said. "It's easiest for everyone if I give up my room. Iggy's already said I can stay with him and his father." "So you don't think you should stick around?" Thanatos asked. "Maybe watch your old man's back while a very dangerous ghost is in town?" Antony just looked at him for a moment before he went back to packing. His clothes were folded perfectly, his books were piled concisely, and everything spoke of a serious OCD personality. When he was finished he shrugged the bag over his shoulders and looked around the room. "Father said he would take care of Polk Sally, so I've moved her to his room," he added. "And the unii." "How long is this thing?" Thanatos asked. "Probably a week," Antony said. "It shouldn't be too long. And I really doubt Father would get himself killed in that short amount of time--" "So when are we leaving?" Shade demanded as he walked through the door. He had a bag hanging over his shoulder, with a pair of tennis shoes hanging from their tied shoestrings around the strap. "I was thinking we could hit Zard for a bit. We could go see the mating competition--" "They compete in mating?" Antony asked with a hint of shock. "No, they compete TO mate," Shade said. "We're talking round the clock fights between lizard men. Rory's mom, Ze? She's a female zard. The males are almost twice her size. Then there's entire rows of gaming competitions, as well. For the smart ones." It was tempting. Antony had to admit it, if only to himself. A week of watching professional fighting and gaming? All on another planet? "I can't," he said reluctantly. "I have finals coming up, and you have to stay here." "Technically I don't," Shade said. "I mean, they aren't my parents!" "Uncle Jack would kill you the moment you got back if you abandoned him," Antony said. "And you know it as well as I do." Shade pouted. "But it'd be a hell of a lot of fun before I went." "We can go once summer vacation starts," Antony said. Most kids didn't like going on vacation with their parents at his age, but most kids didn't have parents that went to other planets for vacation, either. "You better hold to that promise," Shade said. "I will," Antony said as he headed for the door. Shade stopped him, dropping a hand on his shoulder. "Here," his dad said. "I had some of my creds converted to gaian gold and put on this card. If you need anything, or if there's an emergency, you can use it, got it? Even for clothes. But there's only a hundred thousand on it, so don't go blowing it all at once." "Father... what did you do before you came to Gaia?" Antony asked. "Only a hundred thousand?" "This and that," Shade said, pressing the card into Antony's hand. "Nothing you need to know about." "Oh, really," Antony drawled as he pulled out his wallet, putting the card away. "And I know you hang out with the death guy a lot. But I been thinkin', maybe you should be careful about him. Death is tricky, y'know?" "So he's not sending people to their final destination?" Antony asked. "Oh, he is. But what he does before they get there is a mystery. You get really old and you get some strange ideas, kid. Don't ever forget that." "How old are you, Father?" "I lost track!" Shade said, moving out of the way. "Say hi to Iggy for me, and don't forget to thank his old man." "I won't," Antony said. "I know you won't," Shade said more quietly. He turned, his eyes narrowing in the direction of Thanatos for a long moment before he walked out of the room, himself. "For a second it seemed like he could see me," Thanatos muttered, wondering why he felt a little nervous now. "Oh well, this works out nicely!"

=Possession is 9/10ths of the Law= Any teenage boy handed a card with over 100k worth of gold on it will not go straight to the place he's being sent. It's one of those rules of life. Even Antony, who was strict on following rules, found himself in the shopping center of Durem, the card burning a hole in his pocket as he headed straight for the Best Buy. Now that he was staying at a friend's for a while, he needed some extra things. Right? Well, not really, but he really wanted a new program for his laptop. Of course his laptop wasn't actually made on Gaia, so he had spent plenty converting it so it would work here. But now that it could, what was the shame in getting programs from here? A tiny grin of anticipation played on his face as he walked through the door, ignoring the greeter to head to the back where the computer programs were. He spent a few moments reading the back of a writing program, debating between that and another, his mind fully focused on the new toys he wanted. "Hello, kid," someone said from behind him. He stiffened, turning quickly to confront the stranger that dared speak to him before-- It felt like something slammed into his body, shoving him backwards and making the computer program clatter to the floor loudly, bouncing once off of the stand it had been on and sliding a few feet across the floor. Antony swayed, his already pale face turning paler as an internal struggle started to take place. "No," he whispered before his eyes lost their natural gleam, fading for a long moment into pale, lifeless orbs. Then the gleam was back, accompanied by a brilliant smile. "What a wonderful day to be alive," "Antony" said before looking down at himself. He reached down, straightening his already straight silk shirt. He took a moment to admire his perfectly pressed pants, his unscuffed boots, and the hands that, while still graceful, looked to have strength in them. "Yes," he said again, smiling brilliantly. "Today is a very good day to be alive. Now, let's see what I was planning for today." He turned, looking at Thanatos with a little smile as the shinigami watched him. "I bet you know, don't you, my old friend?" "It's... nice to see you again, Rudolfo," Thanatos said. *** "Stupid," Antony whispered. "Stupid, retard, moron, dumbass," he repeated, finally opening his eyes. He was surrounded by darkness, floating aimlessly somewhere unknown to him. He knew exactly what had happened. His body had been possessed. "All because I had some cash in my pocket and wanted a new writing program," he muttered darkly, looking around. Where was he? He kicked his legs, pretending to "walk." It got his body to move, at least. He looked down, affirming that he DID have a body, at least. "It's your spirit body," a voice said calmly from all around him. "You've always had a more developed one than most, it seems. If your memories are telling the truth." It was the same voice as the one that had said "Hey, kid" to him earlier. "That's quite fascinating," Antony said dryly. "But I would like to have both of my bodies now, please." "Sorry, kid. I can't do that. Now why don't you be a good boy and occupy yourself for a little bit? I know, I'll give you something to occupy yourself with." Antony fell, slamming down onto a hard, rocky ground. He took a moment to mutter a complaint before looking around. He was in a city of some sorts, with oddly shaped buildings all around him. And it was burning down. "Enjoy yourself, boy," the voice said. "And take your time. Killing your old man is going to take me a while, after all." Then the voice was gone, leaving Antony there, stranded on the streets of a strange city, watching it burn down around him.

=Possession is 9/10ths of the Law= The guards in the burning town were short lizard like men with helmets and shields. They had short, stubby blades that stung when they hit Antony, so he had stolen one the first chance he got. They didn't seem to know what to do with him, though, because he was still going after two hours, when they tended to disappear whenever he stabbed them. He dodged a tail, twisting in the air and slamming the blade into the soft pallet under the guard's chin. He disappeared, leaving three more to take his place. If that wasn't enough to annoy the teen, he kept getting asked stupid questions by the voice above. "You're holding out well down there," the voice--Rudolfo--said. "Is it these things called video games?" "Something like that," Antony said, side kicking a persistent guard in the gut. "So... what hobbies do you have? I've got two quite beautiful women asking me." "Tell them--" he grunted, uppercutting another guard and slitting the throat of the third, "that I like to crossdress." "Crossdress?" the voice asked. "And... what exactly is that again?" "They'll know." He went back to fighting. He didn't care what response the beautiful ladies had, he had more important things to deal with now. "They want to see," the voice said a few seconds later. "They seemed quite enthralled by the idea." Antony groaned. "Tell them I'm also in training to be a sumo wrestler." "I thought you only started running last week," the voice said, as if he had discovered a gap in the logic. "You don't run when you want to weigh--" he elbowed a guard in the throat before twisting to kick him in the balls. The guard went flying backwards, smack into the door of a burning building. "Four hundred pounds." "Really, four hundred pounds?" the voice asked. "Well, if you say so." Antony waited curiously for a reply, since there wasn't much else to do other than beat the living hell out of these guards that kept coming back. It was sad. He at least hoped Rudolfo kept up with his schoolwork. "They left," Rudolfo said. "Maybe they were finding a dress for you to wear," Antony said. "Hey, is there a way to level up in this game? A princess to save, or at least a new setting?" The guards were even looking tired of dying over and over again by this time. "Ah, right, you need a princess," Rudolfo said. There, in front of Antony, appeared a copy of Riley in a dress. She looked quite traumatized, being tied up and held at knife point by another two guards. "Can I get a different princess?" Antony asked, not moving an inch to go save her, even as she screamed. "What? I thought she was quite attractive." "Dear Lord," Antony muttered. "I have to get my body back before you get me killed." "Riley" gave him a dirty look before she disappeared. "I suppose I should go find your father now," Rudolfo said. "You can't," Antony said calmly as the guards returned to their job attacking him. "He won't expect me back this soon. He'll get worried and start watching you too closely." Stupid, he thought too late, he should have let him go. But it could wind up with his body being killed by an outraged Shade. He didn't want to chance that. Antony quite liked living. "That is an excellent point," Rudolfo said. "Oh, these books are interesting..." "Where are you now?" Antony asked. "The bookstore," Rudolfo said. "Ah, she should make a good princess to save," he added, more to himself. Antony blinked at the sight of a large chested blonde wearing only a skimpy bikini taking the place "Riley" had had earlier. "Help me!" she said. "Help me!" Antony stared at her for a long moment, then shrugged. "Hell, when in Rome," he muttered to himself before he started to fight again.

Closed rp with Rose, replacing two solosChasing Antony The camping trip had left Jace a little rattled; she would have rather died than admit it, too, but the first night back she'd slept with the light on, and she kept on looking suspiciously at dark corners. Her mother didn't hold with superstition. Neither did Jace, not one damn bit, but it didn't change the fact that she'd been scared out of her mind and so had Irelia. She bummed around when she wasn't with Rel; trained, trained a whole lot, cracked her books open and drearily did the study rap when people weren't around to see. She hung out at the mall, too, to grab a soda and walk around listening to the muzak. Usually those visits were fairly unprofitable, just chilling out: but when she saw a familiar paleblue head in a store as she peered at the window displays, she knew she had cracked the jackpot. Jace dropped her soda in the bin, crumpling the can absently, and sauntered into the store. As she watched her target pore over the -- oh jesus christ, models? -- she couldn't help herself: she started to laugh. "If you want me to keep your dirty little secret," she said, "start naming prices, Pervo. How the mighty have fallen." He turned, giving her a sunny grin that seemed off center on his face. "Oh, hello--" There was a pause. "Irelia!" he said finally, sounding as if he were proud to have remembered her name. "Do you not like models? They're so interesting, especially these--" He paused. "Homoerotic pieces," he said, as if repeating what he had been told. "d**k," said Jace, thinking she knew Antony too well and that he was being sarcastic. "Irelia's just my best friend, okay? She's not even here today with me, jerkwad. You seriously need a girlfriend if you're looking at those Japanese cartoon things." He blinked. "Yes, of course I knew that," he said. "Um... well..." He looked so confused now, looking from the models to the girl with the metal legs and back. "Oh, that must have hurt," he said. "How did you lose your--Oh, of course you don't like to talk about the war." He looked SO serious when he said that, too. "So are you looking for something?" he asked. Okay. Although Antony had the ability to be sarcastic, this was going into downright weird. "Why would I be looking for something in here?" she said. "It's a freakin' toy store. I don't know why you're in here. Your dad's gonna disown you." His eyes narrowed slightly and a tiny smirk pulled at his lips, reminiscent of his old self (ironically enough). "You think so?" he asked. "That's fascinating. How well do you know Sha--my Father?" he asked, putting the box he had been holding down. "Uh, he's Uncle Jack's gay boyfriend," said Jace, folding her arms. "And pretty much the dad I should have gotten, which I've told you a million times. You need to go see M.B.; wish I'd had the idea to move out before Jack's parents came, she's been trying to dust the toilet." He blinked. "He's cheerful?" he asked finally. "I'm sorry, give me a minute," he said, turning away from her abruptly. His expression darkened, then lightened again as he turned back to her. "Okay, Delilah--" "So, look," said Jace, leaning against the shelving, one red eyebrow raised. "Calling me other chicks' names isn't a good way to start, especially Delilah's -- " What the hell was wrong with him? None of his mannerisms were Antony, his moves, it was like a bad shadow. It was Antony. Precise Antony. He'd never take a joke this far. He'd never call her Delilah. Irelia, sure, okay, if he was being messed-up, but it wasn't like anyone had told him she'd kissed Irelia, and then there were the gay jokes. Maybe he was delirious. You had to check if people were delirious. He could have meningitis or some s**t. She surrepticiously tried to see if he had a fever. " -- and you know Harper'll be totally pissed if you do that," she added, "considering your hot relationship." "Oh, I should have thought of th--" He stopped, his expression going blank. "I'm sorry, I don't believe in dating dead people... unless they're very cute, that is," he added with a sunny smile. "So ah... You're not Delilah?" There was a panicked look on his face for a moment. "Hey! Let's go shopping together!" he said finally, so obviously wanting to distract her. "You really want to go shopping with me?" Jace leant in, eyes half-closed, aggressively moving into his personal space, taking one casual step towards him and running a hand through her hair. She looked entranced. "You're asking me," she said, "to go shopping with you? You really wanna spend some... alone time with me, A? Just us?" He looked her straight in the eyes. "You know, you're extremely cute in a tomboyish way. It's a pity you're so much younger than I am." He gave her a crooked, flirty smile. "But I would love to spend some quality time with you." Jace leant forward, as though still entranced; she chucked Antony under the chin lightly, and then leant back, looking satisfied. "You really, really think I'm cute?" she said, in a slightly syrupy, starry voice a little reminiscent of Wisp's. "You're not just saying that, A?" "Why would I just say something like that?" he asked with an innocent smile. "I believe every pretty girl should be told she's pretty, don't you?" He was starting to wonder what the real Antony was laughing his a** off about, though. All he had said was that she didn't seem to mind the flirting! Jace ducked her head down as if blushing. Then she reared her fist back, and slugged him in the shoulder, mainly as a warning shot than anything else. "The day that you ever hit on me," she said, "will be the day that the planet collides with the sun and blows things up, small fires bursting out for no real reason, cats and dogs living together, yadda yadda yadda. You'd rather eat your own tongue than call me 'cute' or 'pretty'. You'd eat your foot before doing anything with me alone. Get my drift? So; you're sick, or like, you're high as hell on something, or worse, 'cause at least Antony high or sick would know not to fake calling me cute -- and if you go near Relia at this point I'll make blood come out your tear ducts. And Antony's my rival, okay, but he's mine, so I'm gonna figure out what the hell is wrong with you." "Whoa, whoa, calm down!" he said, reaching up to rub his shoulder. "You don't have to hit me! And I don't know what you're talking about. I'm Antony." He looked to the right slightly, and down, obviously lying through his teeth. "If you're Antony," she challenged, "then what were you, me and Iggy searching for back when we were still kids?" He looked at her blankly, obviously thinking something. "Um... our asses with both hands?" he asked. Even he didn't seem to think that sounded right, but he said it anyway. She laughed out loud; it wasn't quite a nice laugh, or a oh you have proven yourself! laugh. Jace pushed her hair out of her face. "Guess you never found yours," she said. "So, I meant what I said about Rel: I'll play nice with you, no beat-the-s**t-out-of-you, but don't go near Irelia. Got it? Got it." His eyes started to glow, an eerie green that SO didn't go with his body's natural aura. "I would suggest you keep this to yourself, little girl," he said coldly. "It is neither your, nor your... friend Rel's business." "Yeah, you don't make it Rel's business either, a*****e," said Jace, unconcerned; or at least, trying to look as cool and unconcerned as possible. At least Antony'd shown his true colours. "I don't want her crappy powers mixed up with whatever... you're doing." His eyes stopped glowing. "Then we are agreed," he said, turning his back on her and walking away.

=Possession is 9/10ths of the Law= It wasn't bad staying with Iggy. Iggy didn't notice a thing different about him, and he was an extremely laid back guy. Rudolfo liked him. It was no wonder Antony had chosen to stay here. But he had no idea WHY he was staying here. It was hard to kill Shade when he wasn't even in the same house. But if he went home he'd get noticed. The whole reason for taking over Antony's body was to slip in and stab the man in the back. He yawned, stretching his arms over his head. For a second he glanced over at Iggy's bed, where the other boy was still sleeping, then he stood and dressed. He wanted to see if he could find Shade. An early morning attack would work out fine. He left the apartment, closing the door softly behind him and heading down the stairs with his bag over his shoulder. He didn't even think of what "Antony" would do. Nobody was watching. The schedule said that since it was Sunday, Shade would be in the park. With that knowledge Rudolfo asked someone in passing where the park was and headed for the grassy area. There, just as the schedule said, was Shade, stretching out in the grass. "What took so long?" Shade called to him. "Wh--what?" Rudolfo asked. The expression on Shade's face changed for the barest of seconds before he smiled. "You must have forgotten, huh?" Shade said calmly. "Well I can't blame you. You were probably up all night talking about girls with Iggy." "Ah, yes, actually, something like that," Rudolfo said, wondering what in the hell he was supposed to be doing. "Ah, is this sumo training?" he finally asked. "Sumo training?" Shade asked. "No, that's on Saturday." "Oooh, alright," Rudolfo said. "So are we going to spend some quality family time doing something else? A bit of running, then?" "Joking again, right?" Shade asked. "It's Sunday! Today's the day you--" Rudolfo blinked in shock as he found the other man behind him, his arm wrapped around his arms the other holding a blade to his throat. " Tell me who the ******** you think you are and what you did to my son," Shade growled. Rudolfo blinked. "Father," he said. "Don't you ah, think you're overreacting?" There was silence for a long moment before Shade let out a laugh, letting go of him. The blade disappeared before Rudolfo's eyes and a brilliant smile made him relax. "Call me dad," Shade said. "Sure, Dad," Rudolfo said with a smile. "You know what, maybe today's not that good of a day after all," Shade said. "Why don't we go over to the house? You can meet your uncle's parents. I know they've been wanting to meet the kid that keeps asking about them." "I'd like that," Rudolfo said. "But I need to go to the library," or something. "So... later?" "Sure, later is fine," Shade said. Now wasn't a good time to attack, Rudolfo decided. He was still shaken by the feel of the blade against his throat. It was a good thing that he had convinced Shade that he was Antony. He was afraid to know what would have happened. *** Shade scowled darkly at the retreating back, his blade back in his hand. He couldn't kill the guy that had taken over his son's body. All he would wind up doing is killing his son. He needed someone that could exorcise...

=Possession is 9/10ths of the Law= "Y'know, Pete, I got to thank you for coming out on such a short notice," Shade said as he and the Catholic priest walked through the mall. "I would have asked my roommate, but he's kind of busy right now with his parents coming into town. So Tyler said that you had plenty of experience at exorcising--" "Yes, but you have to realize, Mrs. Normon likes to... check her grandson once in a while," Pete said, feeling a bit nervous. The honest truth was, this Shade guy made him a lot more worried than Tyler Deakon did. There was something almost overwhelming about this man's spirit, as if it was a physical entity in the room. And to be asked to exorcise his son-- "Chris?" Shade asked. "Nah, Chris isn't possessed. Chris is a starmaker." "Wh--what?" "He's an alien," Shade said patiently. "He's going to get a hell of a lot bigger, too. Course I'm pretty sure he's not a full blooded starmaker. They go straight to adult stage, and are a hell--ah, sorry, heck of a lot bigger than Chris is going to get. Him and Rory, actually. But Antony, Antony's human." "But isn't he your son?" Pete asked. "He's a cabbage kid," Shade said as he pointed to the gaming area. "He's the one doing the dance dance revolution... and losing." It sounded as if the gaming didn't surprise the other man, but the fact that his son was losing did. "And that's why you think your son is possessed?" Pete asked as they watched the boy fail again. He was laughing at the failure. It was hardly demonic activity in his estimation. "You don't know Antony," Shade said as they moved closer. "Antony doesn't fail. It's not in his nature. Even if he doesn't like something he'll still do it perfectly. Or work his a** off--sorry, work his butt off in private until he can do it effortlessly in public. That's why he's a good fighter, even though he hates to fight." "He's a pacifist?" "No, he just doesn't like getting blood on his clothes," Shade said, waving it off as if it were nothing. His scowl darkened as the boy started chatting with random girls, obviously flirting. "Perhaps he's just had a change of attitude?" Pete asked. "Because nothing I've seen here suggests anything other than a typical teenage boy." "Exactly," Shade said. "Look, Pete, this might not make sense to you, but the real Antony is more like a demon in disguise than this guy. He's the type that would have cut those two girls down with a few words, wearing clothes like that. He's the type that would have gotten a perfect score with every single one of those DDR rounds. And if he had--which he probably wouldn't have--lost, the only sign he would have shown was a slight tightening in his jaw." Pete stayed silent. Honestly, his son sounded worse than whoever it was that might have been possessing him! But he didn't know how the other man would take that comment. "What confuses me," Shade went on, "is that he hasn't kicked the guy out already. There's no doubt who's got the stronger mind." "Perhaps your son isn't as strong as you imagine him?" Pete offered. Shade shrugged. "Any kid that can master fifty different ways to kill a man in one year has to be pretty strong mentally and physically," he said. "That he would never use them is another matter entirely. He learned to use his blade in two weeks, as well--" He stopped, a stunned look on his face. "Tell me, Father, can you sense spirits?" "Ah, well, I would like to say I could judge intentions--" "No, that's not what I meant," Shade said. "Can you sense death coming?" "Death is always near, but with the Lord's--" "Not that--wait, damn, you're right. For all you short lived humans I bet he is." He shook his head. "So will you exorcise him?" "We'll have to set up something where we can get him alone," Pete said. "And I'll have to make some arrangements. How soon do you need it to happen?" "How about in a week?" Shade asked. "I want to see what he did it for." "Then next weekend it is," Pete said. "But we should move it up if the possessing spirit shows any inclinations towards violence, or harming his... host." "Deal," Shade said, patting Pete on the back. "Thanks. I really appreciate it."
