Rayna Farrell: Passing by and hearing announcement.

So perhaps the afternoon had been a complete waste of time. Rayna had slung her metal detector over her shoulder for a long walk home when she heard the sounds of cheers and jeers coming from the ball diamond. "Oh, must be that charity game I heard about, hope they are having a better day then I am."

Although it seemed as if they weren't. Rayna heard the loudspeaker come to life and though baseball was sort of an alien sport to her Meadowview did encourage the students in PE to participate in all sports she found herself meandering into the stands and from there the dugout. It looked as if she'd be delayed a bit this afternoon. Finding the one in charge wasn't too hard as it looked like the guy was frantically trying to encourage anyone to help out. Clearing her throat and putting down her metal detector Rayna spoke clearly, "If you still need a volunteer to play I can help out."

Then she waited for a reply.

Felix Smith // Crowd

A call came for another player, but while Felix entertained the idea of stepping up and joining the group on the diamond, baseball wasn't really a sport he knew well. Football he understood visually, thanks to marching band, but baseball?

Then again, he was good with a flag pole, so maybe it wouldn't have been too painful. But luckily it looked like there were a couple people ready to volunteer - so while they sorted things out, he looked around again.

And caught sight of a familiar furry face under a really cute green and white ball cap. "Eta!" Being only moderately stupid sometimes, he added lamely, "Here kitty kitty." And put his hand out like he would give her scritches.

Chris Gallo / CROWD

A more distressed sounding laugh escaped when Colin shared that he’d seem Chris on YouTube, especially since he was sure that in addition to his good nights, there were also plenty of views on the video of him passing out on the mound in New York just before the end of the previous season.

Thankfully, Colin didn’t mention that bit, and Chris had no intention of bringing it up. If he wasn’t already so exhausted and drained all the time, he probably would have had a visible blush.

“December, actually. Our surrogate is already about four months along,” he confessed. “Can’t exactly change our minds now. And we’ll have two year olds to deal with on top of a newborn, so it will definitely be interesting. We’ve got plenty of help, so it’ll be fine,” he promised, hoping that he didn’t seem as though he didn’t appreciate Colin’s enthusiasm, because he did.

“I can understand that. Everyone has to make sacrifices for what they love. Besides, if you were actually playing, I think they’d make you at least put on a jersey over top your outfit,” he pointed out. And he knew how careful Paris had to be, and how difficult that had been sometimes when they were out fighting at night. That had lessened significantly since their family started to grow, but they weren’t completely absent from the war. That was what babysitters were for.

“You’ll be great, I’m sure. Paris probably has all the production dates saved already, so I’m sure we’ll go to see,” he said, glancing around to see if the game was picking up again after they realized a player hadn’t shown. As fun as it would be to play, he would rather not embarrass himself.

Yuuri Matsunaga / CROWD

The smart thing to do would have been to leave the piece of chicken on the bleacher seat before making his retreat, but Yuuri had been in such a rush to hide that he didn’t consider the cat yowling at him like he was dying.

Yuuri jumped and spun back around to stare at both of the cats with wide eyes, and then flinched at the sound of his name.

“Pasi,” he greeted nervously, feeling awkward and out of place because the last time they’d crossed paths, Yuuri had spilled scalding hot coffee on Pasi, and in turn, Pasi decided to carry Yuuri all the way back to his apartment because that was apparently a normal thing to do.

He opened his mouth a couple times, trying to figure out something polite and generic to say, but when he was told to give the cats what he had and to sit down, he clamped his mouth shut again.

Slowly he stepped forward and tore the piece of chicken into two and set them on the bench for the cats, the last couple pieces still in a paper carton in his hand. He could have decided to interpret Pasi’s instruction as a dismissal, and Yuuri would have been more than happy to hide back under the tree he’d been sitting.

But something told him that it would be a bad idea to make it seem as though he was brushing Pasi off, so… awkwardly… and apologizing to those he had to step around… Yuuri carefully climbed the stands, glad that there weren’t really many people around this particular area, and sat gingerly down a good arm’s length from Pasi. His posture was rigid and tense, and he watched the cats instead of anything else.

“I think I’ve seen that orange one before,” he said quietly, although it was mostly to himself.

Patrick O’RyanTeam STUFFS
Bottom of the 1st, 2 Out, Runner on 1st, 0 Puffs VS.0 Stuffs
Team Stuffs batting - Pat at bat, Charlie on deck

Pat was practicing his swing waiting for the next batter to go only to realize that there was no next batter… they hadn’t showed up. s**t. That meant he was up unless they subbed someone directly for the missing player. That little bit of hope quickly faded when he was informed that he was next at bat, the sub would be put in at the bottom of the rotation. He remained tense as Quenton let them all know what was going on, his gaze flashing towards the crowd when the other man suggested that the players call in some favors. Pat didn’t have anyone in the stands today but his eyes caught on one particular person.

Xander had brought his adopted daughter… if push came to shove Pat was pretty sure they could convince the antisocial girl to take up the mantle of the missing player. But hopefully that wouldn’t be needed. Luckily the need to get Xander to ask Dessie to play was not required when a few people actually came up to talk to Quenton. Breathing a quiet sigh of relief Pat took a few more practice swings then took the batters box. He had no idea how he was going to do but he was going to try his damndest.

First pitch was a swig and a miss. Second was similar….. The third and final pitch followed the first two striking Pat out. Damn. ‘Getting the feel for the pitcher’ indeed. Pat hoped the next batter did better than he did.

He passed the girl batting next with a wave and a ‘good luck’ on his way back to the dugout. He would definitely have to try harder next time.

Mel was napping fitfully under a bench, the ground hard. It was also kind of hard to get a decent nap with the continual shouting and cheering but what really woke him up was the surprising quiet of everything. There was a general mutter and some shouting but it wasn’t anything like the crowd when the game was in full swing. He cracked a golden eye and muttered quietly until the announcement made it clear that one team was down a person so the announcers were requesting anyone who wanted to play to talk to the team. Sucked for them.

Giving up on a nap, at least for now, the large guardian stretched then wormed his way out from under the bench. He wouldn’t mind some more food but right now he kinda wanted someone to give him some pets. Pets were always welcome. And he had the perfect target right there, the guy who was sitting next to the boy sleeping. It was tempting to wake up the sleeping one but that might not end well so might as well bug the one who is already awake. Jumping up next to the guy and gently butting him in the arm Mel let out a plaintive ‘mew’ before trying to work his way into the civilians lap. Humans rarely dislodged a lap cat he realized. Something about ‘awww how cute’. It never occurred to him that Mel was a large cat and maybe just maybe this human he was bugging wouldn’t want a giant a** cat in his lap.

Dessie had filled a few pages with quick people sketches, a few lines each. Random people. Everything from the guy sleeping to the cat drinking from a bowl. She spend longer drawing the male cheerleader and his companion mostly because they would definitely have to find their way into her comic. Something she had picked up doing a long time ago. Her sketching was interrupted though when the announcers gave the startling news about the orange team…. Puffs? Muffs? Mitts? Whatever... needed a new player due to unforeseen circumstances. Naturally her eyes tracked to the team’s dugout and she stared in surprise as her eyes locked with her Uncle Pat. Technically he wasn’t her uncle since he was Xander’s cousin like twice removed but ‘Uncle Pat’ was a better name then ‘cousin three times removed Pat’.

Ice blue eyes narrowed suspiciously as she eyed the tall redhead. She had an inkling what the look was for and there was no way in hell she would be going down there to play. Huffing in annoyance she turned away, she wouldn’t do it. Nope, no way in hell. Not that it mattered since almost immediately people were showing up to play so there was no reason she couldn’t go back to drawing people. Pat was at bat anyway so Dessie knew that he wouldn’t have a chance to really worry about anything other than the pitcher.

Charlie Durand / STUFFS
Bottom of the 1st, 2 outs, Runner on 1st, 0 Puffs VS. 0 Stuffs — Ground Out for Charlie

Watching the game was just as exciting as being out on the field or up to bat. Robin managed to get on base, but the catcher ended up striking out.

“You’re doing great! You’ll hit it out of the park next time!” Charlie said, hoping it would help lessen their catcher’s sullen mood after getting struck out. It happened to everyone, no matter how much they hated it. The best thing anyone could do was try, because if they didn’t then they’d definitely fail!

Charlie waited as patiently as she could for her turn, although she had to cover her eyes as Robin stepped off the bag to try and steal second, hoping that he wouldn’t be called out. Lucky for them the umpire took pity on them and let him go back to first!

“Holy smokes, this pitcher is good,” she gaped as the next batter with O’Ryan on the back of his jersey was struck out as well. Or maybe these guys were just used to playing baseball and not used to the slow pitch of a ball.

And a mean five foot arch.

Charlie drew in a deep breath as she stepped out of the white circle near the dugout, giving her teammate a thumbs up as she made her way to the batter’s box. She planted her feet, made sure her knees were bent, and lifted her back elbow parallel to the ground as she prepared for the pitch.

“Fritz??” she gasped in surprise when she suddenly realized she recognized the pitcher. “Oh my gosh, how are you?? It’s been so long! How was your play was it-- oh sorry!!” she suddenly remembered they were supposed to be playing a game.

She swung too late, knocked the ball into the ground, and right to one of the players on the field, who then threw it to first before she could even get halfway down the line.

Oops…

“I’ll talk to you later okay? Good job pitching! You’re doing great!” she waved at him as she trotted back to pick up her bat and make her way to the dugout to grab her glove. Well, at least she got a piece of the ball!!

Bob | CROWD

The chicken was returning! It was returning!!!

Bob could feel his mouth watering as he watched the young man tear the tender sliver into two, offering up half of it to the orange tom while the other went to Tibbyboy. Bob wasted no time in snatching up his half, sharp teeth shredding the chicken fragment as he savored the fried bird's flavor. Nothing, nothing beat warm meat - well, except for maybe beer.

As the stranger ascended the bleachers (sigh, there went his ability to talk), Bob swallowed the remains and padded his way back to the beer bowl to finish washing down his snack, sending a mental high-five out to his bro for his assistance in the chicken-calling.

His head tilted as he heard the dark haired man - Yuuri, was that what Pasi called him? - comment about having met Bob before. Well... while he didn't look familiar, it didn't come as any surprise to the feline that he'd run into the stranger before. How many people had he begged for scraps, out and about in the city? How many people had he mooched off from that would remain nameless?

Dunking his head into the beer bowl, he guzzled several more swallows before abandoning the rest to his companion, choosing instead to investigate the stranger even further. With two heavy paws pressing against the man's thighs, he unceremoniously plopped his weight down into the kid's lap and stared up at him, studying his face as he ignored the fact he was probably shedding directly into the rest of the poor boy's chicken tenders.

"Meow," he finally said, green eyes peering, as if the single sound relayed everything Yuuri needed to know.

Robin Attewood / Team STUFFS
Top of the 2nd, 0 Outs, 0 Puffs VS. 0 Stuffs

"Oi, mate!" Robin grinned and waved back to the Puffs pitcher (Fritz) as he made his way back to first base. "Fancy a pint after this is over?" It was hilarious to him that out of all the people who signed up, it was the two Englishmen who were pitching. He didn't expect Fritz to accept his offer, but damned if he was going to pass up a chance to chat with a fellow expat. Preferably over beer.

Despite the warning from Mr. Bailey, Robin continued to bounce at first, only he was careful to keep one foot on the base at all times. The umpire occasionally glared over at him, and when that happened, Robin smiled and gave a little tug at the brim of his helmet in a polite acknowledgement of the man's authority. The last thing he wanted to do was get thrown out of the game for aggravating the man in charge of proceedings.

And just like that the inning was over. Trotting back to the dugout, Robin removed his helmet and shook his head, dreads flying, and got a cup of water. Softball was hard work! He retrieved his glove and made his way out to the mound to toss a couple of pitches at John Jr. before the second inning began.

Cordelia Carden // Team Puffs - Catcher
Top of the 2nd, 0 Outs, 0 Puffs VS. 0 Stuffs

As the first inning came to a wrap Cordelia straightened out, arching her back and stretching as she slid her catcher's mask up off of her face. It was easier to focus on the game as a distraction than she would have thought, focusing on the ball as it came her way as opposed to paying attention to the man throwing it. He was doing a good job, at least-- the whole team was, really, leaving no runs scored on either side.

"Nice pitching, Fritz," she called out to him as she tugged her glove off, tossing it onto the end of the bench as she took a seat beside Sumi. Cordelia tapped her fingers idly against the wooden bench in an attempt to lure the floof of a feline over, reaching out to give him a light scratch once he'd inched closer. She wasn't up to bat any time soon and she'd wait until closer to her turn before worrying about taking off the extra catcher's padding again.

"For what it's worth, you make an adorable mascot, Sumi."

Eta // Crowd

At a game where it wasn't wise for cats to talk and the majority of the people she knew were either out on the field or in the dugout, Eta had not expected to hear her name. When she did her ears perked, just barely managing to keep a smile from her muzzle at the 'here, kitty kitty' that followed.

The petite silver tabby hopped up onto the bleachers, trotting happily towards Felix. She made a soft 'mrrrp' of contentment as she butted her head against his knee in greeting, purring happily to let him know without words that she was delighted to see him out and about.

Mi-Hi Harrington / Team PUFFS
Top of the 2nd, 0 Outs, 0 Puffs VS. 0 Stuffs

The ball sailing her way had taken Mi-Hi by surprise, however she had done her best to try and catch it.

She'd just about managed it and whilst fumbling it had still been a catch, Mi-Hi racking her brains for what came next, but eventually she had tagged the based and thrown the ball back...

And hoped sincerely that she had remembered it right.

Play had continued, although the Stuffs seemed to have lasted about as long as the Puffs had - or at least it had felt that way, with the the final batter for the Puffs being struck out before she could reach first base.

Which meant that it was back to the bench and to her - partially - finished bottle of water, as a part of Mi-Hi wondered if she would make it up to bat in the second inning.

Briar Mackenzie / CROWD
Top of the 2nd, 0 Outs, 0 Puffs VS. 0 Stuffs

Briar nodded since it sounded like Peter was having disappearing brother problems too–

Well at least he was guessing his friend was.

"Not much" he admitted when Peter asked him what he'd been up to "My brother's currently down for the July 4th holidays and Kirra and I have been doing more tree-climbing stuff now that it's warmer."

Actually Kirra and he had been doing more than just tree-climbing stuff, because -
like Peter, Benji and himself - she was a senshi too..

And there was the fact that he'd managed to hang out with Tomlin too occasionally.

But the ball game wasn't exactly the best place to talk senshi talk - even if the cheers of the crowd gave them some cover.

He gave Peter a curious look at the other's mention of 'stuff' but nodded in about meeting up sometime.

"We should" he agreed, his reddish eyes noting that there seemed to be quite a few cats around in the audience, before being distracted at the groans from some of the crowd as one of the batters for the Stuffs struck out.

"I wanted to ask you and Benji something" he admitted, because he had been thinking about taking the chance to explore Oort more and wanted to know if one or both wanted to come along with him–

And whilst between school and everything else it was something that had kind of been on the back burner, it was still something that Briar really wanted to do...

Although here wasn't the best place to ask.

There was another groan from somewhere in the crowd, Briar briefly turning his attention back to the events of the game in time see the third batter for the Stuffs getting knocked out thus bringing the first innings to a close.

The announcement had produced two volunteers at the stands-side entrance to the Stuffs dugout, what luck! And before the bottom of the inning was even over. Quenton offered a handshake to each in turn, but before he could get much of a word out, Apollo was tugging at his sleeve with more news: “The Puffs crewman’s gone. Can’t find’em anywhere. “

Quenton blinked. What an….eventful afternoon. The best laid plans of mice and men.
“Thank you, Apollo- keep up with the books, though, you will miss Charlie’s at bat for the scorecard. “

“Apologies, as it so happens the game has two openings if you’re both willing to volunteer. We need a field and batter for this team, the Stuffs, and the Puffs need a new dugout crewperson, which entails keeping the scorecard, making sure everyone is hydrated, wrangling the balls from practice throwing between innings, and grabbing the bats tossed by the runners. Signing on you’d get to keep the game t-shirt and hat, and a complimentary drink and hour visit at the Catfé. If you’re either still interested, or particularly interested in one or the other position. Or you can both play, if the dugout position isn’t amenable. There’s two spare gloves, new, so they’re not broken in. One of you would be Puffs, one Stuffs. “ His attention returned quickly to the two volunteers, Katrina and Rayna.

“Thank you for being willing to come down, in either, or any of the cases, though. It really helps us out on short notice. “

“I’ll talk to you later okay? Good job pitching! You’re doing great!” Clarion, energy-filled words filtered along the summer air. It was a quick run of the lineup again, with rapid outs. Who knew Fritz could pitch so well? First inning was done in a flash.

Rayna - making a choice

It seemed as if another volunteer had stepped up and while the idea of playing softball was intriguing Rayna was unsure if her skills were up to par. However given that this was a charity event it wasn't like there would be scouts in the stands. Mulling it over a little more she ran her hand through the purple strands of her hair before the realization struck. She didn't have to play well just announcing her intention to play would be good enough. It didn't matter which team won or lost the fact was to help the Catfe out. Epiphany complete Rayna grabbed one of the gloves and tested its fit to see if she was okay with the feel of it. "If you don't mind I'll do my best to help whatever team I'm assigned too. I'm rusty at softball but this seems like it'll be fun, and it's for a good cause."

Glancing to the field where the Orange team was now warming up and to the team that was getting ready to bat Rayna simply grinned. "Where should I go?"

Top of the Second - Puffs 0 vs Stuffs 0
Izobel

That had been a real fast inning. The only dilemma that she had faced was short lived when the player Attenwood had tried to steal second base. Izobel had not been prepared for that at all and was about to at least say hello to this stranger before the umpire had come across the field to 'lay down the law.' Izobel bit her lip to keep from saying anything and merely watched the runner return to first. He was intriguing to watch because even after being told the rules he continued to act like he wanted to steal second once more. Turning her attention back to the game Izobel soon realized that the first inning was now in the books. The game was still tied and it seemed as if whatever issue the other team was having with player shortages was quickly solved.

Realizing that Mi-Hi was up to bat second Izobel smiled at her and gave her teammate a quick thumbs up, "just do your best."

Jason Wolf / Crowd

Jason still had his head in his hands, not even caring if he looked bored at this point. His brother was fast asleep and the game hadn't even gotten one hit in. Though he shouldn't be surprised, if teams were really good then sometimes the score would be zero on both teams for quite a while. It had happened quite a few times in the soccer games he had participated in and had watched himself. He hadn't even noticed his brother's hat having been turned around, which meant that the older bro would probably go home with a nice face-sunburn.

He was just feeling a little peeved that his brother was sleeping, but he had to remind himself that his older bro was feeling quite a bit of stress. However, suddenly and unexpectedly before he felt a bump on his arm and looked to see a large cat was trying to crawl over into his lap. While Jason didn't necessarily want such a large cat on him, having grown up with two himself, he couldn't find it in his heart to get the kitty off of him and instead helped the savannah settle into a comfortable position.

His legs would probably be regretting this later.

Stacey Longman / Crowd

Baseball wasn't really her thing. Well, most sports weren't her thing, but she couldn't pass up a baseball game that promised to have cats in the stands. Even if she couldn't own any herself, it didn't mean that she was fine without them. Cat cafe's, adoption events, as much as she could she would go and find an excuse to interact with some cats.

And it seemed that this game was a lot more low-key than officially endorsed ones that had thousands of fans, so it was a lot more enjoyable, at least it didn't have as much continuous screaming, and she probably wouldn't be yelled at if she didn't stand up and clap for whatever team won.

Currently she was sitting in the stands, sipping a soda and eating some stadium food, a pretzel for right now, and just trying to figure out how this entire game worked. She wasn't too sure about baseball, but figured she knew most of it. Though she supposed she was mostly confused as what constituted a strike vs. ball, but perhaps if there were enough examples she would get the hang of it.

Top of the 2nd Inning, 0 Outs, 0 Puffs VS. 0 Stuffs

Kat waved off the thanks with a light hand gesture and a shake of her head. She wasn't interested in a 'thank you' when she got free stuff out of the deal. Sure, she didn't get to show off at bat or out in the field, but she got to hang out with all of the other cool cats and make sure they were hydrated and ready for whatever the next round gave them.

"Best of luck to you! Green's more my color anyways." With a grin Kat was taking her 'Puffs' shirt and making her way over to the opposite side of the diamond. With little in the way of shame, she stripped out of the loose fitting tank that she'd had over a a sports bra and some leggings (if it was good enough for yoga class it was good enough for anyone around the field to see her in) and tugged the jersey on.

"Happy to be your water girl and equipment manager, ladies and gents. Just call me the Kat of all trades.... Judging by the board here, looks like Deme's up to bat? Try not to give the pitcher too long to warm up! Time to get out there and make some runs happen, team!"
