in the beast taming post, the formatting... thingie... prompts us to put in the stat as base + bonus. Does this include weapons bonus too?

In other words, Ruelash has base 25 attack right now. would he use the stat at 25, the stat plus the bonus at 29, or the stat plus the bonus plus the weapon bonus at 33?

Answer

I've added it into the beast battle thread, but it is the stat bonus and not the weapon bonus, so for Ruelash it would be 29.

Came across this question while pondering about Samoset and Kennet's paths. (Question doesn't pertain the them, it just derived from there)

Is it possible for an Artisan to become a Writer? (I define this as someone who writes, like a Bard/Minstrel, but doesn't perform like they would)

If yes, what sort of books and things could they write? Would they be allowed to write fiction, prose, and keep track of historical events? (Cataloging)

The reason why I'm asking is because Bard/Minstrel focuses on a musical aspect, either singing or utilizing an instrument. Writing the lyrics of a song is only one aspect of the song itself, thus making writing a component, not the entirety, which is why I think it would fit better in the Artisan category. Let me know what you think! :3

Answer

Short answer: yes. The "Personal Title" Artisan class is basically for anything that doesn't fit in any of the other non-battle classes, including Writers, Crafters, Sculptors, Painters, etc. Even things like Masonry, Religious Devotion, etc, anything you can think of wanting your non-battle class character to do.

Writers would be able to write whatever they felt like (philosophy, history, myths, etc) but on a general level. Writer characters are not expected to actually come up with any writings for Tendaji and cannot use historical documentation or myths as solos. Again, solos should pertain to a character's reflections and thoughts and inner feelings, so while their personal philosophies would work, myths and history would not. Keep in mind the purpose of solos when including any writing (or songs for that matter) in journals.

So I have several questions that all kind of pertain to each other. Sorry if some of these have been asked before. Just wanted to make sure I got everything. c: Plus an idea just in case?

I was wondering if it was possible for non-battle classes to participate in "battles" or maybe have a solo/RP where they learn how to use their dagger? By battle I mean, with a dummy (like training but not. . . XD) or another non-battle class character (so their skills are pretty equal & it's more or less like practice?).

The reason why I ask is because in order to earn EXP (towards shop items) they need to have battles, correct? So how do non-battle classes earn EXP if they can't battle (assuming my previous question is a no-go)? To that end, is it also possible for them to buy stat boosters (aka HP)?

And finally, if a non-battle character can't "battle" how else can they earn EXP or if there isn't anything in place currently would say, something like this work? Winta is requested to make a sword, she has to roll to see if she can make it without it breaking & the quality of it and based on the quality she earns a set amount of EXP. Or the same idea just for a food gatherer, ect.

Answer

Non-Battle classes can purchase the weapons in the shop that don't have a specific class requirement if they want to participate in battles. They will have to roll for stats first, and will receive EXP as they normally would. Non-battle classes cannot however increase their stats as they growth through stages. The stats they receive as a stage 2 will remain their stats for the course of their lives (unless leveled up through stat boosters)

Battling and beast taming is the only way to earn EXP (this includes battle meta chapters). So non-battle classes would have to either pay for items with gold, or battle others for EXP. As is stated in the FAQ, characters can also solo and RP extra amounts to earn art edits (which would compensate for item purchases that don't relate to battle)

4laugh Alright, Akidike eyes have been a curiosity of mine since I read about them, because when you said bug like I took it to mean big... But if we're going literal bug like, I am curious... Like Fly eyes? whee I'm sitting here with Wikipedia open looking at Bug's Eye Anatomy And I'm really trying not to be a pain by taking you literally or what have you, I just want to know what kind I should look at, because it tells me that there are ten different kinds or so... So sweatdrop What eyeball is it?

Or is it just that their Pupils are large and they have no Iris.... Or very little?

Because Pupils are the hole that light goes through to get to the lens which gets the image to the nerve center at the back of the eye... the reason the pupil looks black is because of the fluid and such in the eyeball? I think that's right ( gonk Trying to remember anatomy of a sheep's eye from 7-8 grade science class.) So if the pupils were so large wouldn't that make it hard for them to go into the light... Wouldn't it do damage to the nerves, and make them blind. There nerves would be overstimulated and everything would be a blurbecause the lens couldn't focus the image with so much light coming in (Like if you took a picture with an old camera and left the shutter wide open or however that works...)

Answer

I'm not super informed on the science behind how animal and bug eyes work, but it's not the compound eye of like a fly. It's more like the eye of a jumping spider (but just one set of eyes obviously)

The Alkidike are made to live in the bottom level of the rainforest, where not much light comes through (pretty much eternal night/dusk except for the edges of the forest) so their eyes register dimmer lights than the earthlings. They do come from the islands though, which have more light involved in their day to day and have developed an extra organ to filter the excess. Direct sunlight, while it doesn't physically hurt (for a while at least), takes its toll on the Alkidike eye and most who venture out from the forests tend to lose their vision as they age, eventually becoming blind by the time they're around 60-70 depending on what the prolonged exposure was like. The snow bouncing off of Zena for instance kills the organ helping with light absorption faster, so their eyes would go bad earlier on in their life. Since the characters aren't really played even into their 50s it's not such a big deal about the going blind part unless they want their characters to go blind.

Alkidike do tend to have worse vision than earthlings, which the antennae compensate for some, it's just not really common knowledge.

^^
That is really awesome, btw. *is inordinately fond of jumping spider eyes*

So, two questions inspired by that that I cant stop thinking about:

How good is a shifter's night vision?

A shifter has the same quality vision as all other earthlings, which is basic human vision. Shifters live in the canopy, so they're adjusted to living with light, unlike the Alkidike who live in the base of the trees.

They are clearly able to navigate in near total darkness (understory night) and very bright sunlight (Canopy day). Do their eye's abilities to tolerate light also shift day-to-night along with their pigments? (like, maybe exposing reflective surfaces at the back of the eye?)

They cannot navigate in near total darkness, they need the assistance of an external light source (aka fire) in order to move around on the forest floor at night. During the day, the forest is more like a dusky setting where it's not bright, but there's ambient lighting.

How does this change as they age?

Their eyes work like humans so they age like humans also. (this is more than two questions by the way lol)

What does this mean for characters with half shifter lineage/characters living among shifters who have different pigmented eyes?

Doesn't matter with above answers

As for the Alkidike vision thing, this would mean that Dyakida's problem is not that she went blind but that she went blind very early?

Yes, although I thought Dyakida's vision was caused by an accident? Not all Alkidike go blind.

Would this mean that a lot of elders would be visually impaired?

A lot of elders are visually impaired, but there are still many many many Alkidike that never leave the forests except when visiting Aisha (and then there are those who never leave the island so they might not ever get the full effect of sun on them). Once a year exposure is not enough to blind Alkidike even in their old old age.

What sort of roles do older alkidikes play in alkidike society?

All are considered elders to an extent, only a few are given the role of Elder (as in part of a council). Alkidike are extremely battle inclined women, so once they are too old to fight, they pick up trades such as sewing, cooking, crafting, weapon work, training the younger generation, staying home with the younglings during battle, etc. The older generation are responsible for all of the societal work that does not include battle. This means that Alkidike that do not fight are incredibly rare. Incredibly rare and frowned upon unless they are unable to fight. (like Dyakida)

Will there ever be a way to change a character's class or class track?

Answer

No. Once a character has reached stage 2 of a certain class they will follow the course to stage 4.

would these class tracks be possible:

Mount X'i oracle
No
Mount Xi'i is a very mysterious place and under normal circumstances, this class track will not be available.

Spy
No

General/Strategist
No
The above two options are very war oriented and the only personal titles characters can achieve are non battle options. And while war is the case right now in Tendaji, it is not going to be the norm.

Courier
Sort of.
Courier as in a mail/message deliverer is possible. Courier in anything involving the war is not.

Inventor
Sort of.
A character can become an inventor, but it makes things much more sticky with keeping inventions within the realm of reason for Tendaji. If a character were to become an inventor, they would have to run any serious plots involving inventing by staff, and more than likely nothing they invented would become canon in any way.

Got some questions about Alkidike Mystics! :3

How rare are Alkidike Mystics? Is it one in every generation? A few every some odd years (50+)? Or are they not bound by time and come as randomly as the others who are not born through pleas and breeding?

Can you obtain an Alkidike Mystic through a character quest? Is it possible for one to be in the result of a breeding? If from the result of a breeding, is there a certain request or dice roll we would need to do in order to have the chance at having a Mystic be born?

Are Hybrid Alkidikes (Male or Female) capable of being born Mystics, or are pure Alkidikes only allowed? If so, could a child, born from a Lotus of Aisha, that is a second generation hybrid of another Alkidike hybrid, be born a Mystic?

Do they have any distinguishable differences from other Alkidikes, such as markings, height, antenna size...etc? Are they treated differently than the others and given more respect and care?

What sort of roles do they hold, other than helping Eshe?

Answer

I will just post all of the information I gave ladyumbra here for anyone interested:

Every so often, perhaps 30 or so years, a mystic is born. Mystics are born from a lotus like all other Alkidike, but are known to give off a small aura that sets them apart from the other lotus flowers around them. Eshe, as the current mystic of the Alkidike was taught by her predecessor what to expect from a mystic lotus. The appearance of the lotus is the same, but with the given aura of the flower it is watched over and cared for carefully until bloom. The Alkidike mystics, while most look exactly the same as normal Alkidike women, are known to sometimes be born with lighter markings, a sign of their potential to become in tune with Aisha.

Alkidike mystics are taught at a young age to speak three languages: the common language of Tendaji (that everyone speaks), the language of the trees (which only Alkidike know), and the language of the ancestors (known only to the mystics born into Tendaji). The Language of the Ancestors is a deeply rooted language used when performing rituals and addressing Mother Aisha and is something of a very close secret. Even the elders of the Alkidike do not know how to speak it and rarely anyone will hear it aloud. It is one of the main studies of the Alkidike mystic in training from a young age and is mastered around the age of 6 (it is one of their only studies until learned properly).

From the point that the Alkidike mystic learns to speak the Language of the Ancestors, they sit in on the current mystic’s rituals and duties and watch. When they reach their prentice age, typically 13-16, they will begin to join in on the rituals in small ways until they eventually participate more and more and handle it themselves.

Along with handling rituals, mystics learn to use magic in battle as well, such as water, fire, air, etc. They can choose to focus more on damaging or healing spells, though they learn to use some form of them all.

The mystic’s job duties include caring for lotus flowers, ‘birthing’ new Alkidike from the lotus, preparing the child to be received by the mother(s) (which includes checking the child for health, cleaning her, and swaddling her), speaking with Aisha and the ancestors/fates when the species face some sort of difficult time (doesn't happen often, but includes famine, war, natural disasters, etc.), sitting in on council meetings as the Voice of Aisha, and becoming a council for Alkidike sisters that require it (such as leading them to Aisha to plead for children, acting as medic for the Alkidike, and finding homes for children who have no family to go to).

When a mystic reaches around 30-40 years of age, a new lotus will begin to bloom with a replacement mystic and the cycle will begin again. There is a point of time when there will be two mystics on the island, sometimes even three. When there are three, typically the oldest has already stepped down from position and will live her days as an elder and Matron of the Alkidike. Two Alkidike mystics are uncommon, but not unheard of.

There is no way to obtain an Alkidike mystic. Only one playable Alkidike mystic exists and that is Kadriye (who was won through an auction).

Is there a way for an Alkidike's antennae to regenerate after trauma? Maybe by nature, healing, or blessing from Aisha, perhaps?

Is it possible for an Alkidike to change their hair style? (Dreads to anything else not dreaded, not the way it's worn)

Can Earthlings be infertile/sterile? (Probably a DUH question)

Are there orphanages, in the case of Earthlings? (Like, if a child has absolutely no family left and no one in the tribe can take care of them, is there a "home" for them?)

Answer

Alkidike antennae will not regenerate under any circumstances.

Alkidike wear their hair in dreads as a symbol of their strength as an Alkidike. It is the reason that earthlings do not wear their hair in dreads, and why Alkidike continue to wear the dreads. An Alkidike choosing to not wear dreads is the equivalent of saying they aren't proud of their heritage and being of Aisha. So... you can do with that as you wish, but it would be a monster change in their perception of their life.

They can be born with ineffective organs or maybe have an accident when they were younger, so yeah, they can.

It's rare, but there are homes for stranded children. The Alkidike have them also, where Eshe tends to them. The earthling version would more than likely be small, with 3-5 children per nation/area. It doesn't happen very often that children are left without a place to go.

Out of curiosity, when it comes to Leaf Earthling homes it says that they live in connected networks of platforms.

1. How do you imagine they get up into the trees?

2. How large are these trees?

3. And are the platforms connected by walkways/small bridges?

4. In the case of, say, a Tale market - would they set up the market at the base of the trees, or would there be like a series of platforms that serve as a market?

5. How large are these platforms, generally, and how are they set into the trees themselves (are they hanging, are they built/tied onto branches, are they cut into the tree, etc.)?

Answer

The information actually needed to be updated a bit from the original post. Leaf earthlings live in the trees as well as on the ground. But, generally speaking, their are ladders that they use, rope ladders, or built into the trees.

These trees are smaller than those in Jauhar, but still pretty gigantic. The trees in Jauhar average 100 ft+ while the trees in Tale can grow to 70-80 ft. The difference is the pocket formation that the trees grow in Tale. The forests grow on top of water pockets in the earth, so they only sprout up in clusters (making forests stretch only a few miles in diameter before it's exchanged for sandy plains).

Not all of the housing is connected to one another, usually families string their houses together to form chains between the generations, but they would be connected by small rope bridges.

The market and other large buildings such as inns are on the ground, typically near trees to help with the structure. Tale's markets is an open air market, so instead of buildings, it's stalls gathered together in a local place.

Platforms are usually built into the trees, using the trunks as a support for their cantilever structures. The same is true for the living situation of shifters.

I haven't had a plan on how to start, but I intend to make examples of stereotypical housing designs in the different areas of Tendaji.

Could a partblooded alkidike, if they chose to leave their tribe and not follow the path of Blade, follow the Offensive magic or Defensive magic tracks instead? Or are they not capable of that degree of magic?
They can. They would be able to use magic the same as any earthling, though IC you can plot that however you wish.

Can a member of the Blade class use a two-handed broadsword as their weapon? The shop says they can, but I wanted to clarify.
Sadly, that's a typo. Alkidike are limited to dual swords, bows, and spears. We'll fix the post to match the class descriptions.

What exactly were the scroll items from the tournament, flavorwise?
Exactly what they say they are. The Scroll of Souls allows non-magic users to learn a magic spell (though you still have to purchase it), and the Scroll of Swords allows magic users to learn a physical special attack. Like with anything else it's a choice that requires extra work. Those wanting to use a magic spell would have to up their magic stat, and those who wanted to use a physical attack would have to up their attack stat. IC-wise, it would be the same as reading a tutorial I guess.

Along the same vein, what are the books used by the Scholar class? They are very unusual for the style and setting of Tendaji.
Tendaji does have bound books and learning materials. It would be a handwritten book rather than a typed and formatted one, which would mean that they would be that much more precious, but they do exist, and that's what these are. These books are larger than most, and typically are ascribed with enchantments that give magic users a boost when equipped.

I'm entering crazy territory with surrogacy/donating, but it's for the sake of Viveka. |3

Would it be possible for Yaholo, Tahigwa, or an Alkidike/Hybrid Alkidike to help Viveka by going across to Aisha? (I ask this because using an NPC is difficult and I can't find anyone who can/is willing to help.) I feel as though this will be a no answer because of how Alkidikes are born, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Answer

You would be right in that this is a no. Aisha has to be pleaded to in order to receive children, and she wouldn't grant that kind of request.

While i was refining and talking over some plots with a friend, it was brought to my attention that "Ghosts cannot be physical or canon to Tendaji" appears at the bottom of the answer to my original question about spirits.

Since Nuawahn has a plot in the works that involves being haunted by a ghost which would lead to a personal quest to put her to rest, what would be an acceptable way to play this? Or shall I scrap the plot altogether?

What im asking for is a clarification. What is acceptable when plotting, ghostwise, or would you prefer we refrain from incorporating ghosts and spirits altogether?

Answer
Ghosts in Tendaji are like ghosts in the real world: there is no way to prove they exist. So they should be treated as such. There is no way to prove that they exist and they obviously do not have conversations, appear as fully formed people, etc.
Acceptable uses of ghosts in Tendaji are spooky feelings of being watched, feeling like you might have been brushed on the shoulder, maybe small orbs of light that flit away in a graveyard, a peak of some ghostly person before they disappear, etc.
Having conversations with ghosts, or seeing ghosts clearly would be considered crazy even by Tendaji's standards, and they would not be treated as normal sane people if someone was known to have been "talking" to one. They would be talked about as if they needed medical and mental help. Which is part of the ill omen spiel from the first question.

The superstitious would try to cleanse the area, just in fear that it might be an ill omen from the gods, but they would not actually believe that they could interact with a ghost.

A few questions on the new rules changes:

On Hybrid Quests:

Do hybrids obtained by breeding count against the pureblood/hybrid count?
No, only quested hybrids are tallied.

At what point of blood dilution is a character not considered a hybrid?
Any sort of other blood makes it a hybrid if it alters the character's looks.

On Approved Quest Characters:

Will this mean that custom slots for approved characters will open more often than usual/ there will be more opportunities to get art for characters?
Not necessarily. We're still going to have customs as usual, though there may be more opportunities during events.

On Class Quests:

What about younglings? Since they do not have class quests, does the two-week timer still go into effect?
Yes.

From when would it go into effect?
From the point that they receive their prentice art.

On Battles:

Can NPCs be used for group/team battles?
No. NPC battles are ONLY for when you cannot find another person to battle. This is obviously not the case.

Who controls the NPCs in group/team battles?
N/A

Can someone who does not have a player in the battle play the NPC/NPCs to assist another player?
No.
