LAURA LISTERINE

Laura did not really know what she could say to Austin and already felt as if this was all out of her bounds, but after all the man known as Mr. Wyong had come to her and told her that Austin was the key to something. He was important somehow. He was connected to Mr. Wyong and somehow Mr. Wyong was connected to the Mastermind. What if figuring out Austin got Laura closer to finding out about the Mastermind?

She couldn't miss this opportunity. She had to gain his trust, but how? Laura took a deep breath. She needed to show Austin that they were on the same side, fighting the same cause. Suddenly, the words just sprang out of her mouth. "Austin... I know about your powers. We need to talk."

Laura hoped that this didn't come off as creepy. She needed Austin to trust her. She quickly ran and unlatched the gate. "If you don't want to talk out here, we can go inside. You can trust me Austin."

LAURA LISTERINE

At first Laura wasn’t going to worry Austin with the truth. There was no reason to worry him in the least, but maybe there was no other way. This all was becoming too weird. Super heroes, horrible and scary mad scientists; this was all stuff coming out of comic books! It was unreal, but Laura Listerine knew she couldn’t do all of this alone. Upon seeing the man who called himself “Mr. Wyong,” she knew all of this would be too much to do alone. He had just up and vanished, but not before telling her that this boy, Austin Aires, who was now in front of her was connected to the Mastermind case somehow. But how? Laura knew she needed to tell Austin the truth. That was the only way.

“No Austin.” Laura said with a sigh. “Your uncle did not tell me. Obviously by the way you said that you told your uncle, but he did not tell me. Do not worry Austin. I would never use this information to hurt you. How I know… well… I cannot tell you that now until I have talked to your uncle about a couple of things, but I can tell you that your secret is safe with me as well.” As she told Austin all of this she opened the gate to her house and put her hand gently on Austin’s shoulder.

“You have friends. Austin… I’d like to help you. I don’t think that the police force can do this on our own.” This was true. Oual was stepping down and Laura was already having doubts on her new position. If the force just carried on the way it was, nothing would ever be accomplished. Laura suddenly realized that someone needed to go against the rules at certain points in order to get things done. She, of course, couldn’t do it, but someone else could. Many others could. Suddenly, Laura came up with an idea.

“Austin…” she said in a slow and steady voice, trying to control her excitement. “I think I have an idea I’d like to run by you.”

Laura could see the mistrust in Austin's eyes. She thought about telling Austin the truth, but then held back. She didn't need Austin to believe her and even though Austin had told Laura not to say anything to Oual, she was going to anyway. Laura Listerine needed to figure out who the man known as "Mr. Wyong" was anyway and maybe Oual knew the name or could help her out in some way. Though Austin was right about one thing....

Laura was the Chief of Police now. She didn't need to tell Oual everything; just enough so that maybe Oual could help Laura out a little bit as well. She did have a plan already set out in her mind and if Austin did have powers like "Mr. Wyong" had actually said, then this plan would work.

Laura stared into Austin's eyes, trying to communicate with him in more than one way. She needed Austin to trust her. "The force is swamped Austin and your uncle resigning from his spot will most likely cause a lot of anxiety on the force, but if you could help me with something I'd be most appreciative." Laura hoped this pitch was working so far. "In this time and place, it is going to be very hard to bend the rules on criminal investigations. High-ups are cracking down on even the smallest minor infractions Austin and that is why I need your help. You CAN bend the rules. If I give you all the information I can about what we have on the Mastermind and a couple of other things that tie into him, will you consider helping out the force as a shadow op? This is highly illegal, but I need someone who can bend the rules Austin. We need to catch the Mastermind before it is too late."

LAURA LISTERINE

Laura smiled at the bravery in Austin. At that point right there, she knew Austin was the nephew of Oual. The courage coursing through Austin's blood was a sure sign. It was late though, and Laura and Austin would have to wrap his up quickly. She needed to get some sleep because the following morning would be hell. She just knew it.

"Austin..." Laura started. "I have been honest with you and now that you have agreed to this anything you want to know is yours. You cannot tell anyone you are working with the police force though. If you want to catch the Mastermind as much as I do then this secret must stay between us. If word starts getting around your uncle's and your life will be in more danger than it already is. I do not know when you and I will meet again, but if you have time quickly I can give you all the information you need right now and answer any pressing questions at the moment. That's the best I can give you for now Austin." Laura hoped that Austin was for all of this.

For the first time in awhile, Laura finally thought that she was one step ahead of the Mastermind.
