Rolling Pins and Text Books

*Scroll to the bottom for a Holliday sugar cookie recipe

“Six cup of f-..f-f-F-l-o-u-r…flour!” Carl looked up from the book and to his mother for approval. Today was the day they were baking cookies, as well as the day that he was determined to learn to read. Donna smiled and nodded, touching her finger to the next line. “Good, now what about this one?” Carl looked down and narrowed his eyes in heavy concentration.

Surprisingly, Donna had found that Carl already knew what several of the words meant, simply from having seen them so often. He even knew how to say bigger words by having heard and repeated them off of television, radio, and adult conversations. She was impressed initially, but when it came to words on paper...reading them was a different story. As any child his age, he wasn't really aware of all the rules of the language, so that's where Donna would have to step in and educate him.

“S-set o-vee-n to 3-5-0.” He inclined his head and arched a brow, clearly confused, but trying his best to figure it out by himself. Donna pointed to ‘oven’ and sounded it out for him. “uh-veh-n. Oven. It breaks the rule of the long vowel sound, by having only one consonant separating the vowels. Normally you would say the ‘o’ in long form, but it’s an acceptation. The ‘e’ is also short sound.” Carl looked up at her and frowned a little. “Why are there so many rules? And why do we have to make groups for letters, like vowels and constanants?” “You mean consonants, and I think that a long time ago – some one had way too much time on their hands and made up all these rules to be a jerk. The end.” “Well that’s stupid…” Donna nodded and smiled. “Yeah, it kind of is, but they ARE the rules, so we have to follow them. So what does that line say?”

Carl turned to the line again and read the instructions that would be needed to bake. “Set oven to 3-5-0.” “Good, now that we’ve set the oven, we can begin mixing the dough. Start here,” She pointed to the top of the ‘add in’ list and then moved to the bowl and ingredients that were crowded around it. “T-t-woo eggs.” “Too, two. The ‘w’ is silent, ‘o’ makes the ‘oo’ sound.” “One..four?” Donna poked her head around to the book and explained. “That’s one fourth. It’s a fraction. Sort of like having a pie and cutting it one way across, and then one way down. It makes four pieces. Take away one of the pieces, and that makes one fourth, or one piece of four.”

Carl didn’t really seem to get the whole theory behind fractions, but instead moved onto the next line. “One table spoon baking powder. They ran together two of the words in this line, did they know they did that?” The boy crossed his arms and tilted his head. “I could teach them a thing or two about words. Words are meant to just be words, not all jumbled like that. Right, Mom?” Donna was struggling so hard not to snicker, but the grin couldn’t be helped as she made to explain. “It’s supposed to be like that, dear. If you see a word like that, just keep on going, without pausing.”

Gah! So many stupid rules! How was he supposed to learn anything properly, when people kept making up unnecessary rules?! He huffed slightly and went back to the line, this time following the rule, although he resented it. “One tablespoon of baking powder. One fourth teaspoon of salt. Two cups of l-a-rd. Lllard…Lard. One and one two cups of w-w-hite s-ugar..” “One and a half cups of white sugar. The ‘h’ is silent in white, and the ‘su’ of sugar sounds like ‘shh’.” Riiight, whatever. Carl repeated the line correctly before moving onto the next. “Two teaspoons of an-ice seed.”

This caused Donna to pause and look in the book, herself unsure of what ‘an ice’ was. The proper term was noted though and the item taken out and shown to Carl. “That’s anise seed, it comes from a plant used to flavor food.” The bird looked over the seed and picked a few up, inspecting them thoroughly before putting them down and nodding. So that was what it was…Donna set aside the seed and beckoned him to continue. He looked back to the book and the last bits of the list. “One fourth cup of brand-y, brandy. One tablespoon of ground sinn-a-mon….Does that really come off the ground? It doesn’t sound like it’d make good cookies.”

His mother didn’t look overly concerned about the word ‘ground’ having been in the sentence, but would rather fuss over something that looked like dry dirt. He wrinkled the feathers above his beak a bit and left off the book to look at what it was. Donna dipped her fingertip into the stuff and held it out to him, letting him see that what looked to be dirt was really a fine powder. “THAT is cinnamon. It usually grows in a stick, but when you grind it, it looks like this.” And before Carl could ask further, she licked the cinnamon off her finger, smiling down at him in pleasant amusement. “Have a taste, it’s good.” Carl looked skeptical of it, but lowered his claw into the powder and brought it to his beak to lick off just a little bit of the spice…and it was GOOD! His eyes lit up and he eagerly lapped up the rest of it off his claw, almost going back for a second helping, but deterred as the canister was taken back. A soft chuckle fell from his mom. “No double dipping! We don’t want to mess up the cookies.”

The boy was somewhat disappointed, but with that having been the last of the list – that meant it was time to bake! With a basic knowledge that everything had to mix together, Donna took over the rest of the reading so that every step went without a hitch. Carl got to help sift and pour, stir and roll out the dough, until finally they began to cut out the shapes and place them onto a cookie sheet that was soon put in the oven to bake for ten minutes.

In the end, it was an all around enjoyable thing. Carl got a reading lesson, got to help make the cookies, and got a little workout by all the work put into their baked goods. Mother and child cleaned the kitchen, and then wandered away to put on the final, loving touches. All that they’d left behind was a warm memory and a tattered old recipe that would, no doubt, be used again and again.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INGREDIENTS

• 6 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tablespoon baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 2 cups lard
• 1 1/2 cups white sugar
• 2 teaspoons anise seed
• 2 eggs
• 1/4 cup brandy
• 1/4 cup white sugar
• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl, and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, cream together the lard and 1 1/2 cups sugar until smooth. Mix in the anise seed, and beat until fluffy. Stir in the eggs one at a time. Add the sifted ingredients and brandy, and stir until well blended.

3. On a floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/2 or 1/4 inch thickness, and cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters. The traditional is fleur-de-lis. Place cookies onto baking sheets. Mix together the 1/4 cup of sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over the tops of the cookies.

4. Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the bottoms are lightly browned.

Halloween Part 1

"Zurg! Get your Zurg here! Only 50g, Get your Zurg!" The vendor waved a can of Zurg high over his head as he adressed the slowly growing crowd of customers. No one had taken to his product yet, but the pale, green sales person was not about to give up so easily. "Get your Zurg! How about it, folks? A healthier complexion guaranteed!"

A few women seemed to move forwards through the crowd, their meager glances having turned to full fascination at the mention of a beauty benefit. So that was what they were after! A malicious glint had developped in the depthless black orbs, but not one person saw it as he tossed the can hand to hand, stopping suddenly to point at no other than a Velvet known as Carl. "YOU! You look like the kind of guy who knows what he wants in his looks."

All eyes turned to Carl, whom hadn't even been noticed amongst the larger people, but now had become an item associated with this glorious snake oil. Carl, having gone to fetch a pumpkin carving kit, stood stock still as the finger pointed towards him, and as it should be - he became the center of attention. The boy smiled and tossed his feathers a bit, striking an air of indifferance although genuinely interested in the one who'd showcased his magnificance. "How did you guess? By my perfect appearance?" The vendor blinked at the bird, before making a gesture of query. "Perfect? My friend, if you haven't tried Zurg - how can you call yourself perfect? THIS little gem is what you need, it's all you need, and all you'll ever need! Guaranteed!" Carl inclined his head. "Guaranteed?.." "YES! GUARANTEED! Zurg will give those feathers of yours a glossy new shine, those claws a razor edge, and those eyes of yours a new hue that NO lady would be able to resist!"

Mentally the man rubbed his hands together in anticipation, eager as a school child on Saturday as he watched his target be absorbed into it. The bird grinned and made his way through the people, tossing a few coins up onto the counter. "I'll take six!..That is enough..isn't it?" The merchant didn't even seem to care about the money as he quickly put together six drinks and lowered them down to the boy. "Sure, Sure! THAT'S how affordable this miracle product really is, folks! Even a child can afford one! Come and get your Zurg, before this opportunity of perfection passes you by!" Carl took the drinks and set the kit ontop of them, lifting the cans up and away from the stall while others flocked to it, all to by the product he'd endorsed. Needless to say, the boy felt pretty good about himself and his Zurg. One for him, One for his mom, One for Trea, One for her mom, One for Iris, and One extra, just in case. He'd bought plenty, and praised himself for such a wonderful deal as he continued home with haste.

The door closed behind him as he finally stepped into the house, his foot being used to push it back into place, since his hands were full. "Mom, I'm home!" The cans were set down and his attire was brushed off, the distant call of his mother comming from the kitchen. "Welcome back - did you get the pumpkin carving kit, like I asked?" "Yeah, and I brought home some drinks, for the party!" The drinks that he again picked up and toted right into the kitchen, where his mother had begun packing up the cookies they'd made for the event that evening. She looked up from what she was doing and arched a brow as she repeated the last bit. "Drinks for the party? Carl, I only wanted the carving kit...just how much did those drinks cost?" The bird shuffled his feet a little and chuckled softly. "About 300g..." He didn't know what to think as his mother sighed and picked one up, turning it this way and that with a look of silent critisism. "Who did you by these from? They don't have a nutritional label or anything." "I bought it from a stall in Barton Town. It's a new health drink!"

The can was set down and Donna glanced at the eager expression of her child. She was pretty sure he'd been conned, but he looked so enthusiastic about it..."We'll see about taking it with us, but I want to try one first to make sure it's safe, ok?" This garnered a happy response as Carl lit up with pride in his purchase. His chest puffed out a little as he imagined how everyone would thank him for the great drink and praise him over how savy a consumer he was...whatever savy consumer meanth, he'd heard it on the radio.

The sound of the soda being opened was heard as Donna broke the seal of the can and tipped it to her lips. A neon green liquid spilled over them, before the can was lowered and she began examining what kind of flavor it was. Whatever it was deffinately had caffeine. It roiled and bubbled in her mouth, its flavor one she'd never come across before, the texture as smooth as fine silk. She swallowed the mouthful she'd taken and nodded to Carl that it was ok, then continuing her sippage of the soda while she resumed packing the cookies. As she did so, Carl followed example and eagerly downed what he could, enjoying this new sensation that he had sparked.

However, deep within both of them, something else sparked. Something malicious, something cold and green, something that wanted to come out and had no inhibitions about using them to do it. The last few drops of the cans were drank, the mother and child completely unaware of the internal changes that were taking place. The boy just hopped onto the counter to help, and his mother continued wrapping the treats until their chests tightened with an unbearable heat that swelled within them, consuming everything before it until the temperature peaked and the two knew no more of what they once had been.

Cookies and costumes were forgotten, a smile of one not quite there spreading over their features. Donna picked up the rest of the Zurg canisters and lifted Carl onto her shoulder. The door never closed behind them as they ventured from their home and into the world, nor did the Vendor seem suprised as they approached his stall again. He recognized Carl, and knew the thing they had come to request. His hands slid below the counter to withdraw his true intention, and as they extended their hands, two probes were placed within. It was then that they departed into the night, and the reign of horror began.

The Roadtrip
Part 1

"On the road again!" "Just can't wait to get on the road again!" "The life I love is making music with my friends!" "And I can't wait to get on the road again!" Crimson, grey, and cream scattered like leaves in the constant breeze the open windows provided. The trio had been on the road for one odd hour now, and with windows wide open to the dusty nothingness of the road, they sang at the top of their lungs for no one to hear.

The sky was clear for such an early spring day, an unusually warm and dry spring day that offered nothing but sapphire skies and a golden horizon of dust and dirt. Occasionally it would be broken by some scrub or the shimmering illusion of mirror liquid, but that disappeared once you got close enough, and the plants only swayed once the truck passed them and left behind the wind of their song. Carl had never been on a road trip before! The bird sat on the top of the passenger side seat and eagerly cast sapphire orbs of wide wonder around the vehicle. It was a truck. An old truck at that, picked off the market for a cheap enough price for the condition it was in. From the outside, he'd seen the faded blue paint and the sharp rust color that stood out against it. The mirrors had a few cracks here and there, and the back window looked as though it'd seen better days, but heck, they didn't care. They loaded up the truck bed early that morning, before the sun had even woken itself, and set off to Eriot only knew where, in the middle of nowhere on some forsaken stretch of road. The interior was littered with junk food. Donna had picked up some soda and candy to keep them going, besides the more 'substantial' foods like chips and honey buns that were supposed to last them even longer.

In the drivers seat he could see his mom. She'd pulled back her now shoulder-length red hair and wore sunglasses that acted like mirrors. How cool was that? Carl couldn't help but stare at them the first time he'd seen them, and on her they just looked even more fashionable as they reflected the highway. It was warm, as noted before, and instead of the sweaters she'd worn since sometime in October, she donned a tank top and jeans, looking more the part of the mom he'd first met. In the passenger seat, Maxine sat! She'd finally decided to cave in and stick around for once, so what better time to drag the family cat off than when they were going on an adventure? The stereos in her ears pumped out the music, and the antennae on her tail glowed softly in the open daylight, a sign that even the cynic that she was couldn't help but enjoy the ride. As for himself, he didn't get to quite see himself until he looked in the right side mirror where his reflection sat perched just as easily as he really was. Carl smiled. He couldn't help it! Over the last few months he'd really been working hard, and for once in his life he really felt as though he was as close to perfection as he was going to get, at least for now anyways. Finely tuned sinew lay just beyond the shining plumage, hard and lean with days of work with his weights and playing with his mom. The star hoodie he wore was left behind this once, and instead he admired a white muscle top that followed all the way to his midrift, cutting off there for a short time before black slacks fell to his ankles.

The crown in the reflection rose as he swelled with pride, but the moment of joy came crashing down around his ears as a horrendously loud noise broke forth. Maxine hissed, the truck came to a stop, and before Donna had even recovered from the backlash of the explosive noise, Carl could see steam rolling out from beneath the hood as some massive, lethargic ooze. "Is everyone ok?" Donna had come back now and looked her puffed up cat and askew avian over, concerned for the two as though she may have hit something. He hand was pushed away though, and Maxine smoothed herself down and into dignity. "I'm FINE. What the heck happened?" "Yeah mom", Carl chimed in, "Is the truck supposed to do that?" His claw was pointed at the obvious problem, and Donna couldn't supress a frazzled look as she unbelted herself and checked the emergency lights. "Erm...." Nothing was lit up, at all, and she had no idea how to run the truck. from beneath the hood, another sound came, this time a low groan that sounded painfully close to an old man dying. donna shook her head a little. "Errrrrm..........No...it isn't. I'm...I'm gonna go look under the hood." The woman climbed out of the truck and headed around front to where the smoking monster continued to belch our large clouds of black gas. Cautiously she opened the thing, but even that only resulted in a small squeak of fright as a mushroom cloud erupted from the engine and the truck smoked no more.

By this time, Carl and Maxine had also gotten out to look at the problem. The seven inch eagle climbed up the truck, with Maxines' assistance, and stared into something he'd not quite seen before. It was large, a literal labyrinth of cables and wires that wove themselves through the hulking frame of some metal beast. Blade whirled and sparkes flashed, but it made no sense to him at all as he stared, unsure of what he was looking at, into the belly of the truck. "Wellllllp....There it is." "Yeah..." "The engine." "Yeah..." "The trucks..-" "OK we get it already! How do we fix it?" Maxines' outburst caused Donna to look at Carl and then back at the engine, motioning to it with an air of somewhat knowing. "Carl." "Yeah?" "You're a guy....how do we fix it?"

So much for knowing. How could she expect him to know a thing about mechanics?! I mean...besides the fact he was highly intelligent and cultured in every mental and physical way, did not a grease monkey make of the boy who attempted to assume a look of deep contemplation. After a while, he picked something - anything - he had no idea what it was or what it did, but he decided that was causing the problem. "That! That doohickey there. We have to rewire it through the watchamacallit so the hoozamawhat will turn the fan to make it work." Man he hoped he was right. Either way, he watched his mom bend down and hessitantly do as he said, pulling out the hose and shoving it somewhere else in the engine before comming back and grabbing Carl, taking him to the car. "HEY! Don't leave me!" "Stay there and tell us if the engine works!" Ohhhhh maxine was peeved, but the mp3 cat sat on the edge of the truck and watched the engine, lifted her paw so that Donna would start it up. "GO!" The key turned in the ignition, and the biggest ball of fire the cat, bird, or woman had ever seen gave one big leap from the engine before more black smoke started spewing out, signifying the dragon was pissed and they'd now royally been screwed. The cat jumped clean of it. She'd seen the spar form and the liquid from the hose catch, and had had enough common sense to get the hell out of dodge before armegeddon erupted in the truck. Needless to say though, Donna and Carl came upon a very angry cat once they clambered out again and went after her, both hoping that she was ok. "You IDIOT! You put the gas next to the spark plug!! I could have been blown to little kitty bits!" Every inch of fur on her stood out, bristling as though all the electricity in here were raring to escape and charbroil the next living thing. It was times like this that Carl was greatful for his size, and the velvet hid behind his mothers hair to escape Maxines' wrath. "Either way...", Donna was looking back at the truck now, "We won't be driving home in that...Looks like we're hoofing it, gang." The two couldn't help but groan, the last sign they'd even seen was miles back, and it would probably be a good few more before they reached signs of civalization. Donna picked up Carl and Maxine picked herself up and began down the fringes of the road, the truck be damned for this treachory - a thought shared by them all as they plodded on into no-mans land.

It was funny. He couldn't help but think that the pleasant smell of earth and the wonderfully clear sky had been all the much nicer in the truck than after nearly half a mile of riding ontop of his moms head. There were no clouds to offer shade, and now the smell of sand and dust only served to make him sneeze every so often as a whisper of wind allowed a tendril to waft by his beak. Carl looked out into the open plain and continued to watch the stretch of land be void of any sort of life...

...Until one, and then two ears popped up out of seemingly nowhere. That was followed shortly by a head, and then shoulders, and before Carl blinked twice there was a whole flipping rabbit! The predator in him couldn't help but grin, the visualization of the animal from a birds-eye-view that would snap near instantly to full definition of the unsuspecting prey in its last moment of life. He'd known that once, and as hungry and dry as he was, blood did NOT sound like a bad idea. The next moment, Donna felt a few sharp pricks of claws, and then a whoop as the Harpy descended to the ground, without so much as a second thought to the fact the rabbit was twice his size and dashed after the thing and into the scrub.

"Carl!!!" The call of his mother was ignored. He heard it, of course, but he would be darned if he was going to let his lunch get away from him over a silly thing like that. The rabbit had now realized it was being pursued and desperately sprinted off into the scarce foliage, decidedly making it more difficult for the small eagle, who looked more than a bit odd chasing from the ground than in the sky, to catch up - either way, the rabbit bounded off hard against the earth and made towards the nearest scrub. The animal was nearly long gone into it before Carl made it that far, and the bird gave a look of disgust into the thin patch of nettles the lapine had vanished into.

The rabbit was the least of his worries though, for footsteps could be heard approaching rather rapidly, and for him that only meant one thing. "Carl Arnaud Boaz Austin, you come when I call to you! What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Oh crap - both his middle names. Carl laughed nervously and looked way up at his mother who was now impatiently tapping her foot and stirring up little dust devils around him. "Well?" "Eheh...I erm....was getting lunch?" "Right. Lunch. You scared the heck out of me and Maxine for your LUNCH, and all you managed to find was a patch of needles and...." The words trailed off as the woman noticed something about the nettles she hadn't a minute before. Scrub that thin didn't make that big of a shadow, did it? Her eyes followed the dark silhouette until her eyes met something very large, very green, and very welcome to see. "A cactus! You found a cactus!" "Is that a bad thing?" He'd never really heard of a cactus, but apparently he'd done something right since his mom had seemed to forget all about punishing him as she walked up to the prickly plant and promptly took out her pocket knife and cut off a large section. Donna cut off the needles as best she could before she shoved the half sphere piece into the birds claws and began cutting off another section of the stubby pincushion. Carl raised a brow. "What am I supposed to do with this, mom?" "Drink." She wanted him to what? "Drink?" From a plant...right....she'd lost it. He looked at the fleshy stub he held in his claws, more than prepared to throw the silly thing away and trudge back to the highway to get a move on, but in it he could see what looked like...water! Well if that just didn't turn his world around and what he thought of plants. But hey, who was he to pass up a free drink? Carl tipped the cactus to his beak and tilted back his head, allowing the cool and somewhat tart liquid to slide down his throat and into his belly.

The Roadtrip
Part 2

Carl drank deeper, deeper to fill the unquenchable thirst the heat had mounted within his tiny body. The liquid only seemed to keep comming as he tilted it further still back to obtain those last few drops that seemed so long off in comming as the stready stream continued into his oblivion. That oblivion could only take so much of cactus juice though, and red flags began to pop up in the recesses of his mind as his eyes opened to watch even more liquid come. Carl tore his beak from the desert fruit and threw it asside, but to his horror - the liquid began forming a puddle that in a flash grew vast and into a pool that was still growing! "W-what's going on?! Why isn't it stopping!? MOM!!!" while he'd always had the bravery of an eagle and the confidence of an army at his back, he didn't blame himself as the childish cry broke loose and he began to back quickly up against his mothers' leg. Cactus lakes were NOT normal - so by all laws of nature, he had every right to be freaked the hell out.

"Hmm?" Donna hadn't yet turned around when the water began to lap at the edges of Carls' talons. The startled whimper was what caused her to stop what she was doing and look to see what now he was on about, but what she wasn't expecting her avian child to be so scared of was the rising water that shouldn't, couldn't, WAS there. "Oh s**t!!" Donna reached down, and snatched up Carl, breaking into a mad dash towards the truck. Working or not, there was no way in hell the insanity would reach such a blatantly mundane thing as that! Or so one would have thought until a savage quake beneath her feet unbalanced her stride and sent both of them sprawling onto what remaining sand there was to be seen in the midst of a world now consumed by the opaque liquid of cactus juice. Ever on did it come, the clouded liquid gaining such treacherous volume as it began to climb beyond the ankles of its prey, tendrils snaking up the fabric to spread its darkness over their frail forms. The golden sands now vannished beneath the oncomming tide, the sounds of an ocean filling their senses as Donna splashed through it, trying in vain to reach a higher ground that no longer existed. All she was able to do was hold Carl above her head, sparing him the water for but a few moments more as it lapped against her waist, bitterly chilling her flesh as it clawed its way up all around them and beyond even what was now visible.

Just Can't Wait to be King

* Working on Claws of Steel
*Preview to his desire to learn Welding

Scritch scritch...scriiiiiiiiitch.....Squeeeeee! Scritch.........scritch...

There. The base was done. Carl brushed asside the metal shavings and cast an appraising look at the wittled down hunk of metal. The boy smiled. Today was the day he would be king, and not Sidney nor Toby nor any of the other boys could say a word to oppose him once the dream of the eagle was realized and his creation came forth from the raw material. He leaned down towards it again and placed the edge of his talons against the steel, slowly starting counter-clockwise, dragging them across to smooth the husks he'd cut before. Not that he could really cut through the whole thing yet - but Carl felt he'd made some progress in his skill as he watched thin ribbons of metalic sheen lift from beneath his ministration, breaking away before starting anew in his single, fluid motion. Ever so slowly he began to cut upwards, bringing his claws to a single point between two cuts. This was done over and over again, slowly forming triangular towers that sported sphered upon their peaks. Carl again stood back to admire it - but was he missing anything? He had to know!

Thus he hopped down from his workspace, leaving behind the metal shavings and scattered pages taken from old printed tomes that were useless to him besides for such meager purpose. To their succesors did he turn. "Now let's see..." He spoke to no one, but ran his fingers gently along the spines of his advisors as though they were living things. "The Once and Future King....The Redwall Series completed.....The Story of King Arthur and his Knights...Caesar's Legacy: Civil War......No...Where is the the blasted thing.........AH-HA!!" Carl grabbed it, pulling the book from its place in his shelf and dusting the cover off a bit with the feathers on his arm. "The complete list of Royal Crowns."

He set down the passage and flipped through the pages until the image he sought was brought forth and he traced his claws over it with great anticipation. The Danish Crown Regalia. One of the more simply designed head pieces, but certainly not at all lacking in its own unique intricacies that simply, and silently, spoke of an age of terrible glory that seized those, so fortunate as to see their king rule, in the talons of awe. He wanted that!! He wanted that power and magnificence, to be admired and feared by those he adored, if only feared in a passionately protective manner. Although....

He looked at the picture and then at his work. The one of ink and paper was much more intricate and special than his....it had carefully carved passages and designs, jewels and gold causing it to shine with authortiy. His...was just metal, naked metal that had no adornment other than its carefully crafted shape.

Well...perfect as he was, he WAS only a beginner at crown making. This one would still be special, since it would be his first, but one day, Car lwas determined that he would wear a crown just as fine as the kings of ages long passed into oblivion.

He closed the book and put it back into place, straightening himself out before going back to his work. With a renewed fervor, he began again to cut and shape, lovingly molding and hollowing out the delicate ways and corridors that dug deep into the surface and beyond.

The crown was beginning to look more and more like a crown, Velvet sized of course, and before the morning had worn too far in - bare as it was, Carl picked up the product of his labor and held it up into the sunlight that shone over it in cascading glory, if only in his own imagination. It would still need jewels and finishing, but that would come in time.

He certainly wan't to wait anymore THIS morning, and promptly ran to the mirror. He stopped before it and swelled himself up to full height, suddenly reverent as he lifted the headpiece high and lowered it upon his brow, a fiercly proud grin playing upon his features as he finally spoke his one wish and goal.

"I just can't wait to be king."

GET OUT!!!

The lighting in the room was dim. Satin curtains wafted gently in the evening breeze, an open window venting the heat that radiated from the small figure that sat nearby, basking in the pale moonlight. The stark whiteness illuminated pages stained black beneath his fingertips. His chest swelled before a heavy exhale came, just parely stirring the pages as he turned to the next part of the chapter. Although it wasn't what was really written, his mind brought it into vivid details as his eyes roved the pages, whispering deeper meaning past what was. "He looked into those eyes, limpid pools of shining amber that held the waters of an endless sea of sorrow. Her lips trembled, but he silenced them, placing his finger to her lips to quell her fears as the winds tore at the pane...Haruhi...The name stirred his heart, it was a sickening swell that threatened to beat from his chest, but his face showed no signs as he merely smiled and embraced her close..."
The sounds could be heard, felt even as he imagined himself in such a situation, comforting a frightened girl in the storm as lightning illuminated his perfect figure wrapped around hers. He didn't know why girls liked that sort of thing, but he wanted it. He wanted to be that sort of King, loved and admired, while close friends offered him respite from the worlds pressures. His carefree kingdom...
He turned the page, eager to read on. He didn't notice the eyes on the back of his neck, nor the soft creak of old hinges as light streamed into the chamber, a silhouette framed in the doorway. A feminine figure...she was looking for something...something only he could give her. "Carl have you seen my ma-" and then he heard her and cringed, desperately trying to hide the book. "GET OUT!!!!" He screamed, embarrassed to be caught out reading it. However, it only served to draw her near, her delicate digits extending to snatch the naughty novel and see what it was he read...and then it was found. The woman quirked a brow and tapped her foot, eyeing her son that now fluffled himself in sheer horror of being walked in on. "M-Mom...Please...PLEASE don't tell..." Donna shook her head and looked at the book, a sigh drifting delicately from her lips. "Fine...I won't tell but stop stealing my stuff."
The bird nodded furiously and watched her go. He turned around and crawled into bed, curling up amongst the covers. The scene still played....and into the night he silently prayed...that no one would ever know of his secret and passionate Ouran High School romance...
