Pool Party!

Time: The last days of Summer
Where: Gambino, a public pool
Who: Josh and LuLu
What: ORP event
Status: Complete
Post-note:

LuLu was miserable. Her shoulder was engulfed in a cloud of dull, throbbing pain. It acted like as thick smog that veiled her sharp senses until they were nothing but a fond memory. She was too engrossed in her injury to care about anything else going on around her. This was her first visit to the hospital, however, the frei barely showed any concern. Instead, the girl favored cradling her arm in one of the waiting room seats. Every so often her soft lavender eyes would dance tentatively along the plain white walls until they glanced at the boy who was sitting next to her.

LuLu knew Josh was angry at her. However, she also knew that she had managed to break Sevilin’s nose. She fondly recalled the gush of blood that spurted forth and dispersed into the kiddy pool. It was wondrous, like a glorious red sunset. Even at the cost of punishment, LuLu was delighted by the notion that she had put the sea fairy in his place once again. Her lips curled slightly at the thought despite the fact she was clutching a bum arm. The rabbit made sure to hide her grin from her guardian. She wanted to prevent any unneeded questions. Any conversation now would surely end in a fight and the girl wanted to prevent that as long as possible.

LuLu did not say a thing as she was guided into one of the sterile white rooms of the emergency wing. The rabbit did not even protest during the forty five minute wait for the doctor. On the other hand, the frei did have a couple of choice words when the doctor began examining her arm. Upon the first touch, pain shot through her shoulder like a steel rod being driven into her flesh. Instantly, LuLu lashed out at the man with her good limb. Her nails lunged dangerously for his face. Her voice was stern and forceful, “Do not touch!” The girl held her hurt arm close to her body and turned away from the man.

Josh frowned at his raevan’s antics and moved to restrain her. If anything, the boy did not want to have to pay for the amount of sedative it would take to knock a frei out. It did not take much force to pin the girl to the bed long enough for the doctor to do a quick examination of her arm. LuLu simply glared at the boy until the examination was complete. The doctor left the room.

The anger burning in LuLu's eyes was both intense and undeniable. The rabbit did not enjoying being manhandled and this was the third time today that her guardian had crossed that line. She would have protested if her guardian was in a better mood, or if she was in a worse one. Her victory over Sevvie still lurked in the back of her mind and served as a relief even with all her discomfort.

Josh mumbled at the girl even though it was indistinct if she was truly listening, “I would not have to do this if you would behave. You embarrassed yourself and me at that party.Your actions angered more than me. You acted like that even in front of Zul!” He released her wrists and took his seat at the edge of the examination table again. His words settled in the air like a looming fog. His stare was firm as if her were daring the girl to criticize him.

LuLu almost took the tantalizing offering. Josh had initiated the fight. She usually would have been happy to oblige his efforts. However, the girl wanted to retain whatever good mood she had left. LuLu turned her head from the boy with a huff of frustration. She had yet to think over fact that she may have angered more than just Josh. Seviliin was obviously going to be angry, but she did not care about that. Now that she reflected back on the party, Ebony had appeared angry, too. LuLu felt a tad guilty as she wondered who else she had made angry. Would Zul be angry? Josh was about to continue persuing the fight when a knock at the door interrupted him.

The doctor emerged with both good and bad news. The good news was that LuLu’s arm would be fine aside from a few days of bruising and soreness. A splint was provided to ensure proper healing, but that was all that was required. The bad news was the costly five hundred dollar bill that was handed to the teen. Josh nearly gagged when he saw the piece of paper with such heinous numbers printed upon it. Josh had yet to take his mom up on her offer of help. Yet, it appeared as though Josh’s will would have to buckle today. His meager four hundred dollars of savings would not support him through this excursion. The boy could not help but make another off handed comment at the frei. Frustration was clear in his voice, "Why do you have to cause trouble, Lu?" The rabbit did not show a particular interest in the remark. She was too busy slipping on the shoulder brace that she had been given. She also did not particularly want to reflect on the inquiry. The frei did not need to take an unnecessary guilt trip. Her mind was still churning from Josh's previous statement and LuLu did not think she could handle anymore blame.

Josh felt a knot growing in his stomach when he paid the bill with his mother’s credit card. Part of him was still worried that Christopher would find out about his reliance on the family’s money. Josh cringed when he signed the receipt. His father had made it very clear when Josh turned eighteen that the boy would no longer be granted support from his family. Even his continued stay in the house was under intense negotiation for a few weeks. If Josh ever complained, Christopher would laugh in his face and mention how he was forced on his own when he was thirteen. He would then make the teen do some sort of menial labor as punishment for his feebleness. The callous man would say the activity would “get rid of some of his weakness”. Nonetheless, the boy was sure Christopher just enjoyed watching him suffer. Through years of experience, Josh knew it was unwise to cross the man. He returned the receipt to the cashier at the front desk.

Josh hoped that Christopher would never find out about this.

It Is Lonely At The Top

Time: Soon after Medical Attention
Where: LuLu's room
Who: LuLu and Josh's dad
What: A threat
Status: Complete

LuLu was content hoarding herself away in her room. Once her victory had faded away to a distant recollection, she was left with the pain of her steadily healing shoulder. It served as a reminder of her stupidity at the pool party. LuLu frowned to herself as she examined her bruised skin in the mirror. Ugly purple splotches marred her flesh like a growing mold. Small fingertips brushed over the tender marks hesitantly. The rabbit let out a hurt yelp. She clasped a hand over her mouth to muffle the sound before it echoed out of her room; however, her hand was soon removed as LuLu recalled that Josh and left with his mother minutes before. She was alone in the house so making noise would not be any issue.

LuLu continued the exploration of her injury. She breathed shakily. In the back of her mind she hated herself for allowing Sevilin to do this to her. She may have given the sea fairy a crooked nose, but he had also left her with an ugly mark. Though, hers would not be permanent. LuLu looked up from her examination when she heard footsteps coming from the hallway. Instantly, the rabbit felt a pang of worry strike her heart like an icy cold dagger. Who could that be? LuLu did not want to find out. The girl began backing away to her closet as she heard the sound draw closer to her door. The girl’s heartbeat raced in time with the pounding beat outside her room.

Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump.

The noise stopped as LuLu was tucked away into her den. The girl peered over her mound of blankets to fix her eyes on her door. She waited on the intruder with baited breath. Amethyst eyes snapped open wider as the knob on her door slip to the left a few degrees. It then slid to the right for a few more tedious seconds until the door clicked open. Hinges creaked like a siren song promising death. LuLu almost shielded her eyes from the invader, afraid of what was to come. However, like the curious girl she was, LuLu peeked between her fingers. The rabbit gasped meekly at the person she saw.

“Chr-christopher!”

That sight was more horrifying than any robber! LuLu slid the closet door further closed and huddled into a corner of her makeshift burrow. The bulky man lurched into her room and peered around the corner. A meaty hand wrapped on the closet door until it rattled and threatened to break free from its restraining hinges. LuLu did not reply. Christopher’s voice came out like a coarse bark, ”Come out now! I know you are in there, Idiot. You are the only one home so I have a question for you.” LuLu felt terror creep into her as though it were radiating from her very rune. The man continued. His tone grew more wrathful, ”If you do not come out, I will make you come out.” The girl did not heed the threat. Instead, she pressed her back against the wall behind her like a cornered animal.

The girl near screamed as the closet door was slammed open. Her clothes were torn from above her as Chris literally ripped his way through all obstacles to get to the raevan. His sturdy fingers curled around her injured arm in a vice-like grip. He wrenched the girl from her spot on the floor to force her out of her comfortable den. The vengeful man kept pulling her sore limb until tears brimmed in the corners of her gold rimmed eyes. Soon, LuLu found herself floating at his level. Her ribbon dangled a few inches away from the ground which sent the girl into a whole new fit of unease. Her slim fingers clawed and clung to Chris’ wrist in a white-knuckled grip as though she was afraid of falling.

Chris’ lips curled over his teeth as he snarled, ”I warned you!” His mouth then twisted into a terrifying grin. His canines peeks dangerously from his parted lips, ”Now then, tell me what this is.” The man held out a printout to the girl. The frei did not understand anything on the sheet, but if she had, she would have noticed the page’s contents contained a few credit card listings. One in particular caught the man’s attention: a payment given to a hospital in the amount of five hundred dollars. The man dug his fingers into the girl’s arm as though he was trying to reinjure the offending limb. His other hand thumbed curiously at the brace around her shoulder. He let out a wicked chuckle sounding more like a demon then a human, “I do not pay for your injuries. Josh does. Tell me, why did I pay for you?”

LuLu closed her eyes and tried to fight back the agony coursing through her shoulder. She could feel her muscles spasm under her skin from the stress of the attack. The rabbit’s let out a shaky squeak, ”I-I do not know.”

Chris’ eyes narrowed. The beast of a man did not seem satisfied with her response. He spun on his heel and threw the girl against a wall as though her half formed body weighed nothing. She bounced against the surface like a toy before he pinned LuLu in place by her injured shoulder. He placed more pressure on the sensitive joint before he spoke again, ”Tell me the truth!”

LuLu cried out feebly during the sudden assault. Her brows knitted together and she gasped out in distress. She prayed Josh would arrive home with his mother soon. She would not even a robber coming in this time. She just wanted someone, anyone, to save her form Christopher. The rabbit broke down and responded. Her voice cracked due to the ache in her shoulder, ”J-Josh has no job!”

The man pounded his fist into her injury once more and barked, ”Is that all? Out with everything!!!” He actually did not know if the frei was still withholding information. In Chris’ opinion, there was no harm in probing further. The only cost was that he got to hurt the creature he considered a nuisance more.

LuLu shivered and gritted her teeth. Her endurance was running short due to the constant barrage on her hurt arm. She replied with a silent sob, ”H-he got into a fight!”

Chris chuckled; however, he was not amused. He eased up on his grip and quipped in a rough tone, “He is so useless. Almost as useless as you.” His heavy browed eyes glared at her coldly. His words grew more insulting as time passed. His anger was bubbling with each harsh remark he made, ”Wasting money on a science experiment. Tch!” He released the girl. LuLu fell to the floor in a heap. Her good hand shot up to clutch her aggravated shoulder. The brute stalked over to her dresser. He slammed a hand on the wooden counter. He roared out loud. His words were aimed at the frei next to him, ”Letting a monster pretend to be something of worth!”

The rabbit did not take kindly to the insult and lifted herself up from the ground to protest, ”I-I am a… princess!” She may have been weaker than Chris, but she still would not sit idly by while he made fun of her.

Christopher raised a brow. His fingers edged to the makeup and jewelry that litter LuLu’s dresser. Thick fingers gingerly picked up a bracelet. His stern eyes seemed fixed on the object. The hard angles of his face absorbed every detail. He breathed a sigh before he threw the trinket in the girl’s face with all his might. LuLu yelped as it hit her cheek and fell to the floor. A slight pain shot from her cheek as the bracelet connected. She brought her hand up to touch where the accessory hit. The frei was surprised to find a drop of blood had formed on her finger like a lone crimson gem.

She looked back up at Christopher. Dread filled her doe-like eyes. Her jaw fell open as she watched the man then lunge at her dresser and rake his hands over the top. He did this until every item was littered on the floor. Glass bottles shattered and plastic crowns were crushed under storybooks. Christopher bellowed, ”You are NOTHING!” He stalked over to the frei. His calloused finger pushed away her hands and wound around her neck. His eyes twinkled dangerously as he applied pressure on her delicate windpipe. LuLu clawed feebly at his hands. Her nails left angry red welts but they did nothing in deterring the assault. Her eyes grew wider and wider with worry. He seethed lowly, ”No one will save you. No one cares about you. I will make sure of that.” LuLu wheezed. I gurgle escaped her throat as her lungs fought to gain the breath they craved. The girl’s chest heaved up and down as it tried to fill with air. LuLu’s grip on Chris’ hand grew weaker as her vision started to blur. She moaned out a choked plea. Chris simply looked down at her with loathe filled eyes. He wanted so badly to take the last traces of life from her, but now was not the time. The man released his hold on her neck.

LuLu gave a few ragged coughs and gripped at her neck. Bruises were already beginning to form on her fragile skin. Her breath returned to her in ragged and unrhythmic puffs. She felt some relief as her lungs filled with fresh air. However, she dared not look at Christopher. The man continued is degrading banter despite that, ”You only cause stress on this family. If you cross me again, you will pay.” The man exited the room.

LuLu tried to fight back the tears that had been stinging in her eyes since Chris had first entered the room. Nevertheless, she could not keep them at bay for long. The girl choked on a quiet sniffle as she began to weep. Christopher's words only added on top of Josh's to form a heavy burden that weight atop the frei's shoulders. Those at the pool party might hate her, Chris wanted to kill her, and there was no one who could help her. LuLu gazed with bleary eyes at her broken collection of crowns.

LuLu did not feel like a princess today.

She had been dethroned.

Birds of a Feather

Time: Soon after It's Lonely at the Top
Where: Josh's back yard
Who: LuLu and Nicholae
What: A first encounter
Status: Complete

The guilt was eating away at her.

Like a caged lion, her emotions were clawing and tearing at their bars. Shame branded her heart like an unsightly scar. Her chest felt heavy with the burden. Her body felt tired. Painful. LuLu choked back another sob and buried her head into her palms. Her back pressed against the coarse bark of a tree. The rabbit’s slight shoulders strummed a melancholy beat against the rough surface as they shook with unshed tears. She hid herself from Josh, from everyone. No one should see her like this.

No one should see a fallen princess.

The previous day still haunted the girl. Was she truly that worthless? Why was this happening to her? The raevan’s mind sought an answer, but her thoughts were distant, like a flock of birds fading into horizon. She tried to reach out and grasp for them, but they were already too far away. They looked back down on her with pity. Then a moment of promise graced her. One bird faltered and came down to perch at her level. A sickly looking creature with its feathers sparse and haggard. It looked on the raevan with blank eyes. LuLu wasted no time in pouncing on the pathetic animal. She grasped the only idea she could get a hold of.

The only person she could blame was Josh.

LuLu’s fists curled tightly into the grass beneath her. She imagined it was her owner’s hair. She snatched at the green tresses imagining, instead, a field of auburn below her. The tremors of woe wracking her body flared into coursing rage. Josh had caused this to be done to her! If he had not lost his job...

Because of him defending her.

The girl’s rage quickly simmered down. A new wave of distress overwhelmed her. The rabbit’s control had broken like a strained dam. The flood of anguish was unbearable. Her small fists pounded into the dirt, smearing the wet earth onto her knuckles.

She did not notice when the first tears fell.

However, before she knew it her face was moist and uncomfortable. Her eyelids were heavy with sadness. Her fingers tended to her tears. Frail fingers swiped the damp streams away only to have more replace them. Her face was soon a fine mesh work of fresh dirt and soggy tear stains. LuLu was reduced to whimpering in the wavering shade of the oak she floated beneath. It was the only thing that seemed to ebb away at the misery she felt. Nevertheless, it was a mere pin p***k in an overfilled pool.

“You are not the only one who has things to cry about.”

LuLu almost did not catch the sharp remark with her violent weeping. Her puffy eyes snapped upwards. She feared it was Josh. The voice held the same snappy tenor as her guardian’s; yet, it was also graced with a pleasant harshness.

Her gaze soon fell upon a brown hare. The handsome creature had a ebony splotch hugging closely to the curve of its back like a intimate lover. The male’s gray eyes were crisp and clear. The twin orbs radiated a liquid passion like the moon’s reflection on a rural lake, like something you would only find in fairy tales.

LuLu could not help but emit a faint gasp. Her chest fluttered. She could not discern if she was shocked or… intrigued. Her breathe caught in her throat as if she was afraid it would somehow taint the rabbit across from her.

The male spoke up with unmoving lips, “Ha, got you to stop blubbering,” he was boastful yet compassionate, “Tell me what is wrong.” The smooth, raspy voice wrapped around Lulu like a velvet curtain. Her gloom was almost forgotten until the last words wavered between them. Hot tears welled up in her eyes once again.

The hare fluffed up and hopped over to her in two effortless bounds. He stood on his hind legs to bring himself to his full height. The raevan could feel the male’s soft fur dancing beneath her chin. She hated to admit it, but it may have been even nicer than hers. In another time and place, she would have loved to pet him. LuLu looked down and felt her eyes locked with his two glittering pools. “Sorry.” Her voice was low and breathless. It held no zeal.

She wanted to look away from him. She was not good enough to meet his gaze. The girl floated a bit lower. The hare took notice quickly. “Hey! That is not what I asked for.” LuLu’s features tightened. It did not feel right shoving her problems on the hare. As if he could read her mind the hare glowered, “I WANT you to tell me.”

The raevan felt the tenseness in her features radiate into her body. She struggled with the first words, they stung her like getting teeth ripped out, but the sentences after that flowed like a opened faucet. “I am weak. I do not know what to do Mister Hare. Josh cannot help. No one can. Everyone from the pool party might hate me now. I am supposed to be a princess, but all I do is cause problems.”

The hare’s expression was solemn. The only sign he was attentive were the shifting colors of his eyes as he weighed her words. “First off… my names is Nicholae.” He jabbed her side playfully with his nose. He was rewarded with a shrill squeak from LuLu and a halfhearted smile on her part. “Second, who said being a princess was easy? Are you just going to give up? You know, if you do not try to make one person happy you will never make anyone happy.”

LuLu felt her ears burn with those words. She felt a bit of reassurance. It bumped around in her chest along with the guilt. It was a hollow clatter. “Th-thank you… Nicholae.” The hare could still see the sorrow pent up within her. “Tell me your name.” The raevan chimed timidly, “LuLu.” The hare smiled without moving his lips, “Okay LuLu. I do not think you are weak. It takes a lot to a talk about what hurts. Tell me when you have any problems. I will always be here to listen to you.”

LuLu nodded in agreement.

Halloween 101

Time: A weekend
Where: Josh's living room
Who: Josh and LuLu
What: LuLu learns about Halloween
Status: Complete

Thunk!

LuLu’s ears swiveled forward.

Thunk!

They angled at the door in one curious flick.

Thunk!

Her head snapped upwards.

Thunk!

The girl floated through her door and out into the hall. Her fingers traced the grain of the wood as she casually made her way further into the house. As she strode into the family room, the two furry amplifiers on top of her head picked up every noise coming from the front porch.

One second it was clattering coming from outside, like the dull clinking of old wind chimes. The next second a bang would erupt which shook the floorboards gently. The young raevan rocked with the movement as she approached the front door. She gingerly pushed the entrance ajar and allowed her gaze to carefully scan through the small crack; an ever vigilant rabbit monitoring her surroundings.

When no threats were found she swung the door open effortlessly. The smooth metal surface glided forward until it smacked against an object behind it. A metallic clatter sounded and a shrill squeal rung out as something, or rather, someone fell gracelessly on top the floor.

Josh glared up at the girl. His legs were still tangled awkwardly in the ladder. The boy groaned until he felt stable enough to unravel himself from the stepladder. He proceeded to pry his legs from the device. It put up a slight struggle, like a hungry beast clinging to the last scrap of meat on a carcass. However, soon he was free and able to flop off the ground. “Lu what was all that for?” He brushed himself off. No dust was actually there, but it gave his raevan a chance to explain herself.

An opportunity she let slip away.

The rabbit frei was too caught up in examining the wares her guardian has adorned the house with. Her eyes traced around rows gauzy cotton that clung to the door frame like an exotic mold. The lavender orbs swept downward to meet face to face with a bright orange pumpkin. A hysterical face was jabbed into its tender flesh, fangs included. The raevan cringed inwardly at the twisted, pained look of the gourd. Her finger pointed all around the entrance way. She turned to Josh, “Why?”

The boy chuckled, “Halloween is coming up soon.” The girl’s expression only grew more questioning. Josh’s laughter only grew stronger, “That’s right! You have never participated in Halloween! Let me explain it Lu.” The raevan saw as her guardian’s eyes crinkled into smiling crescents. The look put her on edge.

“You see,” The boy tried to form the right words, “Halloween is a holiday where you try to scare people. It is fun.” LuLu’s lips twitched in contemplation before they fell into a frown. The down turned expression looked awkward on her as if it was etched on at the last minute. Her voice rang hesitantly, “Scaring is not fun.”

Josh nodded, “I understand. But that is not everything! Kids go around house to house to get candy. People also go to parties!” The boy threw up his arms in excitement as if it would somehow punctuate the joy that was Halloween. The rabbit still has her doubts. “I do not know…” Josh shrugged off her negativity like an old coat. “Okay, you can be grumpy. While you do that, I am going to go buy toooons of candy at the store.”

LuLu’s ears fluffed up. Her shoulders tilted forward as brought herself closer to the boy. A pensive expression formed on her face at the mention of sweets... And the idea of Josh spending money. The thought still left a sour taste in her mouth due to recent events. “I will join," as an afterthought, “You can tell me more about Halloween.”

House Call

Time: A weekend
Where: Josh's home
Who: LuLu and Lucia
What: An invitation
Status: Complete

RING! RING!

LuLu: *approaches the phone and removes the chiming device from its stand; she pauses for a few seconds to contemplate just which button she had to push* Uh... *she chooses the green button and holds the receiver to her ear* H-hello?

Lucia: *hears the female voice and timidness and doesn't immediately recognize LuLu's exuberant voice from the pool* Hi! Is LuLu there?  It's Lucia.

LuLu: *her ears perk up at the familiar voice; she can almost envision the cat eared frei in front of her* Yes! It is LuLu. *her voice begins to pick up momentum now the she knows who is calling*

Lucia: Oh hi!  *grins, now recognizing the excitement* Sorry -- I didn't recognize your voice!  What's up?!  What are you doing this weekend? *twirls a strand of hair and imagines how she'll decorate the entryway*

LuLu: *she almost inquires why she sounded different to Lucia, but she is distracted by the sudden question from the kitten* I am not doing anything. *her voice gains a tremor of excitement* Do you have plans?

Lucia: *eyes narrow as Yuu's butterflox frolics into the room*  Halloween is coming up and I wanted to throw a party, even if it is before Halloween. -- Sammy. Get out. -- Sorry.  I was thinking that I would invite you over for a dress up Halloween party.  I was going to--  Sammy get out! -- I was going to decorate everything to look all spooky and cool.  Would you want to come?

Lucia: SAMMY!  GET OUT OF HERE!!!!! *sound is heard as Lucia chases the nosy energetic butterflox out of her room* s**t!

LuLu: *she listens to Lucia intently and jumps a bit when the other female yells at an invisible intruder; a loud crack and static explodes over the phone* Are... you ok? Who is Sammy? *the rabbit frowns slightly and holds the receiver closer as if it will somehow bring her closer to Lucia; she almost forgets to answer the question* Oh! I will go. *she did not wait to know her guardian's answer, she knew he was a sucker for parties* I can help decorate too. If you want. *her voice was hopeful* What are you dressing as?

Lucia: Sammy is a stupid butterflox that Yuu takes care of for the Lab.  I'm fine, she's just annoying.  *sighs* But yeah, if you want you can come early and help me decorate!  *thinks about her costume* I'm not really sure what I'm going to wear.  It'll be something really hot though.  I'm going to the mall later to get a costume with Yuu.  But the party won't be anything too big.  But I couldn't really think of who I wanted to invite.  Is there anyone you might want to -- other than Rivener because he's a douche. *giggles at the new word she learned to call him*

LuLu: *she wonders what a butterflox looks like; for some reason her mind conceives the image of a furry, colorful, winged blob; she returns her attention to the conversation* Your costume will be hot.... like at the pool party? *the rabbit's nose scrunched in disgust* That does not sound like fun. Will you be sweaty? *the bunny pipes up quickly* We can bring Varun and Domo and Zul and... *she trailed off* I will ask Josh who he knows. *at the last second she cooed* ..... Douche?

Lucia: *giggles* No, not hot like that!  Hot like sexy!  I won't be sweaty, but I'll look really good.  I'll have to figure it out.  Maybe I'll go as a vampire or pirate or fairy.  Like I said, I don't know.  Do you have any ideas yet?  *smiles as LuLu lists all of the names* That sounds really cool!  We'll have to see who can make it!  *nods* And yes. Douche.  He's a jerk.  Stay away from him.  He will kiss you and then break your heart.  *feels a little satisfied for warning the rabbit away from her heartbreaker*

LuLu: I am not sure. I cannot just be a rabbit? *the frei rather enjoys herself and her furry kind* Riv helped me before and never tried to kiss me.... *she hesitates* But I will be wary. *her tone switches over to a giddy air* I will see you at the party then.

Lucia: Great!  Come over early if you want to help decorate, but if not I'll make sure it's all taken care of!  See you then!

LuLu: *Josh's voice calls out and the frei speaks over him* Bye. See you then! *the phone clicks off and her voice dies away*

Lucia: Bye? *cocks her head at the phone as she hears the click and then hangs up looking forward to costume shopping and the party* YUUUUREEIIIIII!!!!

LuLu's eyes were lit from within. Her enthusiasm bubbled up and caused a giddy smile the spread across her face. Josh called again for her. The girl chirped back, "We are going to a party!"

Lucia's Pre-Halloween Extravaganza

Time: A weekend
Where: Lucia's homr
Who: Josh and LuLu
What: A party!
Status: Complete
Post-note:

LuLu almost regretted agreeing to go to Lucia's party. A frustrated scowl was emblazoned across her face, sharply pointed ends curling downward. She hated this holiday! Why was everyone so determined to scare the fur off of her? Goblins, ghouls, and ghastly creatures, LuLu had enough of them! The rabbit stalked to her room and slammed her door closed. There was no lock on it; Josh’s dad did not allow anyone that comfort. However, she knew that it there would be a cold day in hell before anyone trespassed in her room while she was brooding.

She nearly flung herself into her closet, made nest, as she desperately sought its comforting embrace. She huddled up eagerly into the different fabrics that composed her makeshift bed. Some were scratchy and demanding like calloused fingers. Others were soft and soothing like a reassuring shoulder. Every inch of her blanket cradle consoled to her in a different way. It was nothing compared to recent friend Nicholae’s smooth words, but it was close. Her head rested comfortably on her favorite red sheet. In the back of her mind a thought rang out above all the other, even above her solace. While she was there another fight had broken out because of her. Of course, she was not the only reason, but the rabbit frei’s egocentric mind would have none of that. She was the sole cause of the impromptu brawl that day. Once again, she had failed at helping others like a true princess. The guilt, which was at one time relieved from her shoulders, weighed down on her once again.

Funkytown

Time: Soon after Lucia's party
Where: Josh's kitchen
Who: LuLu and Josh
Status: Complete

Josh nearly screamed when he walked into the dinning room for breakfast the morning following the disastrous Halloween party. He bit his tongue until the wail faded into a silent whimper. LuLu sat across from him and she was quite a sight to behold. Her arms were slumped gracelessly across the wooden table in front of her. One of her nails had etched a small pattern into the polished surface. A blank expression veiled her features. Her golden locks where splayed around her head like a haggard halo. Who knew how long she had been there.

Josh set down his customary morning bowl of Cheerios, his dad would not allow them to buy Fruit Loops much to the boy’s dismay. The clink of glass must have snapped the rabbit out of her stupor, because her eyes rolled upwards to her guardian. The muscles in her face flexed until she was giving the boy one of the most intense glares she could muster. Josh fought the urge to state the obvious.

Someone had gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.

However, there where two problems with that statement. One, LuLu slept in a closet. Two, judging by the faded, black circles under her eyes the raevan had not gotten much sleep. The boy delicately took the seat next to her. There eyes never left each other. Josh could not determine if the girl was about to yell at him or fall headfirst into the table due to exhaustion. The boy watched the bobbing of her head with worry. He finally grasped his ability to speak again, “Tell me what’s wrong Lu.”

The girl flinched. The boy wondered why. LuLu spoke hollowly, “I do not feel good.” Josh frowned then venture forward to feel the frei’s forehead. Her ears swiveled back but that was the only protest she gave him.

No fever. No chills. No anything. Josh pondered this for a few moments before his lips upturned into a sweet smile. He wore a sympathetic expression. “Okay, I know what is up. You need to work that bad party out of your system.” LuLu eyed him curiously. “You are just hung up on it, because it did not turn out well. How about me and you go somewhere nice tomorrow and have some fun,” the boy added, “I know the perfect place.”

Running of the.... rabbits?

Time: A weekday
Where: A petting zoo
Who: Josh and LuLu
What: The sickness starts
Status: Complete

A kid flew by and near bumped into Josh. LuLu eyed the small human curiously as it bounded by. Her ears flattened slightly. Her guardian chuckled, “Do not worry Lu. There are other things here.” Josh was sure that Lulu would enjoy it here. Who wouldn’t?!

A petting zoo was like a child’s wonderland as far as he knew.

Bouncing toddlers and prancing kidlets practically gushed out of every orifice in the area. Their joyous laughter filled his ears like the tinkling of bell during Christmas; it was only a matter of time before he felt ‘warm fuzzies’ welling up in his chest too. The reaction was infectious. The children’s delight spread like a giddy wildfire. There was no way LuLu could stay mopey in this kind of environment. Especially, now that they were approaching the main attraction. The animals.

LuLu grimaced. No, it was not just that simple. LuLu had flinched internally. Her emotions stifled by her disgust. Who would do this? She tried to turn her gaze away but her mind would allow her no such comfort. Lavender eyes scanned over the multiple cages lined up across three identical tables once more. Fragile wire bars held steadfast against their prisoners. Each cheap cell contained another innocent soul. In total, nine rabbits were spread out before her. Each one wore an expression of grief more pathetic than the last. LuLu’s breath quickened. She mumbled into the air; her words were lost in the tension surrounding her. Josh realized his mistake instantly.

Two words escaped his lips, “Oh ********.”

The boy quickly made a move to pull LuLu away. Sheild her eyes. Anything. The frei’s shoulders stiffened. She growled and threw his arms off of her. Her delicate frame trembled with anger as piercing purple raised up to meet Josh with pure hatred. Her lips formed the words but no noise escape. She paused, growled, and then gave another attempt at proper speech. “WHY!!?!! What is this?!” Her finger shot accusingly at the cages. Josh recoiled from her harsh tone. The boy had never heard her yell like this. The sound was grating and shrill. Her bell like voice has bloomed into a cruel siren. Josh stumbled over himself as he formed a coherent response, “P-people pay to pet them Lu. It is fun.” The raevans expression fell limply as she mulled over his word. Then all too suddenly it blossomed with a new shade of rage. A bitter crimson.

LuLu grabbed his arms and shook them, “WHAT?!!” The girl did not quite understand her anger herself. It had come so quickly like an impossible tidal wave and now she was drenched in her wrath. It was overpowering and invigorating. She had seen the rabbits, her brothers and her sisters, held captive by these people, these humans. They were innocents. Now slaves to this cruel business. She knew who the enemy was.

Her rune released a soft throb of light and dimmed. It faded into a rich, dark plum.

Lulu released Josh with a shove. She stalked over to the cages. Children were thrown carelessly aside like toys. Little boys yelled and small girls cried. The rabbit frei shut them up one venomous look at a time. Once she reached the cages, her arms shot out like twin battering rams. The vicious limbs tore at the miniature prisons until they stood in shambles on the ground.

Josh made one more move to stop his raevan before she got too out of control. He bit back his fear and ran over to restrain her. LuLu’s ears swiveled backward. The two fuzzy watchmen took notice of her guardian’s rushed footsteps. She easily evaded. The boy fell gracelessly, face first into the display of rabbits. The table broke with a sickening crack. The now liberated mammals flew into the air and landed on the ground in sloppy, haphazard piles of fluff and paws. LuLu’s gave a piercing cry of woe as she watch her companions tumble about like used cotton balls. All rational thought flew from her mind in that moment. Her face melted into worry and wrath. Her vision burned red. Her rune discolored into a muddled mix of black and purple. “You…” Her voice seethed with vengeance, “You hurt my family.” Josh gaped. Family?

Wasn’t he LuLu's family?

The boy looked at the rabbits surrounding him. This was not right. “No…” His voice was hollow, disbelieving, “I am your family.” LuLu lunged at him. Her nails tore at his chest. The boy screamed out in pain. The raevan’s harsh words were mixed in with his agonized wails. “No. Stupid human. STUPID!!! YOU HURT US!!!” She struck him again. This blow seemed to be the one that radiated through the citizens visiting the petting zoo. People looked on in horror before they scattered like vermin. The rabbits took this opportunity to hop closer to LuLu. The group erupted into a fit of chitters around the impromptu fight. If Josh was in the right state of mind he would have labeled them as… happy.

The boy brought his arms up to defend himself against LuLu’s assault. It was the only thing he could do save for beat his raevan senseless. As much as he would have enjoyed that simple pleasure, to just let loose on the girl, it was not a smart move in the long run. He always promised himself he would not stoop to his father’s level. He was not about to go back on those promises.

His actions were rewarded. LuLu’s cruel blows eventually waned into tired growls and unintelligible gibberish. She rose from his beaten body in one fluid movement. She spoke a few mangled words. LuLu’s grasp on sentient speech seemed to have failed her. However, as her word grew more irrational, the hoard of rabbit’s around her appeared to be growing more responsive to her. They had formed a ring around the raevan. LuLu’s rune, which was now completely black, lapped over them like a thick and voracious fog. The rabbit’s eyes glimmered with cruel intent. It was a far off cry from the dull luster they originally held. A gruesome transformation had occurred in both the rabbits and in LuLu. It had happened right before Josh’s eyes and he could not stop it.

He watch with tear blurred eyes as LuLu chirruped to her animal cohorts. They replied in one unanimous voice. His raevan turned to him once more. The glare she wore spoke volumes. This was not over.

LuLu left the petting zoo with her deadly entourage in tow.

On the Hunt

Time: Soon after Running of the rabbits; same time as Commander Log 1
Where: Aekea
Who: Josh
What: The first day of searching
Status: Complete

When the rabbit frei left, the few Gaians that remained in the patting zoo trickled away. Each one wore a look of disgust. Promises of 'not returning' and 'reporting this to the authorities' spilled from their lips. Josh listened with disinterest. He was more concerned with the fact he could not feel his arms.

Within a few minutes, the zoo manager made his grand appearance and ventured forward to take account of his zoo's losses. Luckily, the only damage done was a few broken cages, less than a dozen lost animals, and one battered teenager. It appeared that LuLu had been more concerned with her escape rather than her revenge.

Without missing a beat, the petting zoo manager quickly helped the boy up and began to tend to his wounds to the best of their abilities. Josh had refused to let the man call an ambulance. The boy did not need another hole burned into his wallet. Especially, since he was about to pay for havoc that his raevan had caused. The price of nine rabbits and three cages was pretty steep much to Josh's dismay. That accompanied by his inevitable ban from all petting zoos weighed down heavily on the boy. However, the loss of his raevan was even more disheartening.

Hours had ticked by like seconds as the boy received numerous cold compresses and awkwardly wrapped bandages. He could already make out a few blue bruises snaking across his torso like an ugly fungus. The manager had took notice of this too and had refused to let Josh go until the man was satisfied that the boy was well treated and not about to meet an untimely death.

Josh was not pleased.

The manager was too slow. LuLu was long gone by the time the boy was released. Josh gave a few sideways glances as he walked to his car. Part of him hoped that LuLu would tumble from a bush. He did not care if it was so she could maim him again. The boy just wanted the comfort of knowing that his raevan was safe.

Unfortunately, he would not be given that consolation this night. LuLu had left him for good it seemed. The boy had kept his eyes open as he made his way home. Auburn eyes were alert and distressed. Even as Josh approached his welcoming driveway, he passed it by without a second thought. He kept driving in search of LuLu.

Josh roamed around Aekea until dawn. Until his messy bandages unraveled. Until his insides hurt. Until his heart broke.

Commander Log 1

Time: Soon after Running of the rabbits; Same time as On the Hunt
Where: A forest near Aekea
Who: LuLu and co
What: The first day of command
Status: Complete

They were all young... weak. The humans thought this trait was cute. They used this weakness to bring my brothers and sisters into slavery. It is why I allowed myself to serve a human. I wasted a year with that boy. I have ended that chapter of our life.

It was easy to place myself as leader. As it should be. Only one male challenged me. A hot headed youth named Jacques. He is a simple boy with simple beliefs. He said, "How can we let a woman lead us?!" Absurd. I retorted, "How could we let an idiot like you lead us?" Some quick and well placed bites made him rethink his words. My other siblings learned their place. I would be the commander of this team. My family.

My first order was to find shelter. I would create a nest for my new family. I found a large tree in the center of the forest. No predators were near. It was large and safe. I could tell it would last through many generations. My family agreed. We started our new life today.

Police Panic

Time: After On the Hunt; Same time as Commander Log 2
Where: A familiar police station
Who: Josh and co
What: A plea
Status: Complete

Josh did not know where else to turn. He had been looking for hours and hours with no luck. He had not found a trace of LuLu or her band of rabbit cohorts. The boy knew that she was somewhere in the forest. The only question was: where?

Josh's open palm slapped down against a silver bell. A sharp 'chingching' broke the still air. The police station feebly rolled awake as shuffling sounded past the reception desk. The boy looked on with impatience. He had not stepped foot back in this building since his run in with the Shadow Bandit. It seemed odd that Aekea would have so few police stations. The boy shrugged off the thought. He hoped that this run in with law enforcement would be much more pleasant than his last ordeal.

A door slammed open and a familiar glare caught Josh's eye. The look was remarkably similar to a caged dog. It was from someone who was biting at a chance to snap. It was from the balding officer. Josh's insides twisted as the man approached. Unpleasant memories filled his head.

Was he the only officer on duty?!

The portly man wiped powdered sugar and jelly from his lips then dusted his confectionery coated fingers on his mussed dress shirt. He looked up to the young boy with another characteristic glower. His voice came out as a gruff croak, "I remember you. Come back to turn yourself in?"

Josh chuckled weakly and shook his head. The officer did not seem as amused as he was. The teen was convinced that the officer would have been delighted to put him behind bars. The boy continued, "I need to file a missing person report. Perhaps we can organize a search party too. It has been more that a day since she went missing."

The officer's eyes lit up like a child opening a present. "What did you say boy?! Who went missing?" The overweight man hefted himself into a chair. The furniture gave an agonized creak. He then grabbed a pen along with a bundle of forms. His hand was poised to jot down the specifics.

Josh replied tersely, "LuLu. The rabbit girl I had with me before." The pen that was so eagerly drawn fell over. The officer looked up at the boy with a disbelieving stare, "So that thing has a name now?" The officer's body rolled back into his seat; his belly pushed out into a large mound. He stated flatly, "I am sorry to say that we do not waste time and money trying to find some perverted boy's sexual playmate. Go get another furry or something. The thing is probably glad it got away," he rolled his eyes, "Who knows what sick things you did to it to make it mute."

Josh felt heat rush into his cheeks. Before he could stop himself his fists were beating against the wooden reception desk. A tall, precarious stack of files went tumbling onto the laminate floor. He roared at the officer, "WHAT DID YOU CALL HER!!!" The boy could feel his arms trembling. It felt right when he raised his fist to lash out at the man. However, a disinterested voice snapped him out of his ire.

"Going to assault an officer now?"

Josh's fist dropped. "P-please. I have to find her." His voice was brimming with unshed tears; they were urged on by fear, anger, and grief. He blinked back the liquid heat. It had been an entire day since LuLu had gone missing. Twenty four hours had passed in which she could have been hurt, beaten, or maimed. Josh had held some great esteem for the policemen of Gaia still; however, it only took one middle aged, piggish officer to ruin that respect. The officer chided, "I told you no." The boy begged, "PLEASE!" A smile spread over the officer's face, "No."

Josh growled and snapped at the man again, "I WILL FIND HER WITHOUT YOU THEN!" He made sure to knock over another pile of papers as he stormed out. The officer whispered past a cheshire grin, "Heaven help it then."

Commander Log 2

Time: After Commander Log 1, Same time as Police Panic
Where: A forest near Aekea
Who: LuLu and co.
What: An excerpt about Lulu's command
Status: Complete

Our first night was hard. It is getting colder. My brothers and sisters did not like the chill our den got. The tree above us is large but also drafty.

They blamed me.

I promised them that tonight it would be warmer. The clouds are rolling in overhead. They are dark and thick. I think it will be colder tonight. I must focus on making our home warmer. This group is more mistrusting than I anticipated; they remind me of myself in many ways. Yet, I fear they might be taken under Jacques wing if I mess up too greatly.

The boy is persistent. I thought I had silenced him, but he still stirs some questions among my other brothers. I can hear their whispering. I will ignore it for now. There are more important matters to attend to than a simple minded fool.

There was growling last night. The sound was close. It frightened my siblings and I was also afraid. I could not let then see my fear though. I must be strong for them. There were no predators yesterday but they will soon find us.

I have work to do.

Commander Log 3

Time: Soon after Commander Log 2
Where: A forest near Aekea
Who: LuLu and co.
What: An excerpt about LuLu's command
Status: Complete

The fortifications were successful. Our home is well built and suits our tastes. A lining of leaves and dirt were all that was required to insulate us. It was messy work. The trinkets in my hair were bothersome. The feathers snagged on the tree's bark. Who put them in? I wonder.

It felt wrong taking them out so I did not.

Today, I sent the men off to find food for us. I do not know how they will fare. I saw no food nearby. I believe in them though. I paw full of berries will make a nice meal for us all. I know they will talk about me while they are out. Jacques is with them.

The women stayed to tend to the home and put the final touches on the structure. I taut the youngest how to cut thorn bushes without getting hurt. The plant is bitter and sharp. However, its barbs serve to hide the entrance of our home well. She learned quickly. I was pleased.

I saw tracks nearby. I did not tell my siblings, because I do not want to cause them grief. The prints were large. I placed my hand on one. My fingers could not cover it all. I felt power beneath my palm then. It was a power that was hard to describe, but I know I do not want to meet the creature that made the print. I hope they left.

Wild Rose

Time: After Commander Log 3, Afternoon
Where: A forest near Aekea
Who: LuLu, Vyn, and co.
What: A fight erupts
Status: Complete
Post-note:

It hurt. Not my wounds. That sting was brief and fleeting. The shame. It hurt worst of all. The last survivor of my team, his name was Barry, had spread word of our failure. He had said that I had caused my brother's deaths. He mocked my leadership. I must admit that I was angered by his loose lips that had spread such sickening slander. However, I also know that it would have been difficult to make light of two casualties. The messy truth was for the best.

Two men had died and I had been humiliated. I was not able to kill the rose. It was obvious that I had failed. My siblings could see the damage done to my body. They could smell my defeat. I could see the anger in their eyes.

I lied.

The thing that hurt worst was knowing that they thought less of their commander. Jacques had eagerly been awaiting this moment. He hopped up on a tree stump and began to preach like a pastor about the injustice we had caused by allowing a woman to be our leader. Some dribble about upsetting the balance and causing us bad luck. I was hurt to see that the remaining three males had begun to agree with him.

The females tried to ignore their rally and helped me tend to my wounds. They rubbed plants on my skin with their noses and licked at the raw parts of my flesh. It felt nice knowing that they still cared for me. The youngest, the one I had taut just a day before, huddled in closer to me. She told me, "I still believe in you LuLu."

I smiled today.
