Three days in the forest had slipped by. Each day held a different type of fear and hardship. Shadows would linger in the bushes with eagerly trembling jowls. Bitter cold would cling to their fur at night whispering the promise of death in their ears.
Today’s difficulty was the scarcity of food. The realization was alarming to LuLu. Her rabbit siblings were moaning to her about empty bellies and pained stomachs. The raevan made curt pledges to each one of her groaning companions.
‘We will not starve.’
‘We will not die.’
Now the rabbit frei had felt it necessary to venture out further into the forest in search of sustenance. She had chosen three of the strongest males to accompany her. She left the other three to tend to their nest. The group’s paws made tender impressions in the spectrum of leaves that littered the forest floor. LuLu ribbon dragged along as well, it marred the delicate tracks of her brothers with a jagged streak. The rustling of their movements filled the stagnant air.
A snap sounded from over head. The troop tightened together and scanned the horizon. A bird flew overhead. They relaxed for a moment.
What else would await them on this mission?

Staying within the limits of urbanised areas has slipped from the rose’s thoughts. She had scarcely been home in the past few days and when she had found herself back in the sterile flat and Ethan had regurgitated the same old spiel about her new found wandering habits her rune had itched to take her elsewhere, escape the claustrophobic environment which was meant to be her dwelling place and return to nature. It was for that reason that Vyn now found herself in the woods... It was chilly and slightly uncomfortable for the rose but she had a shawl wrapped tightly around her pale shoulders to keep out the biting cold, however her travels into the wild had left it matted with twigs, torn by ensnaring thorns and branches, and generally dirty.
The frei floated deeper into the forest. It was peaceful in amongst the trees. There was very little evidence of humans ruining nature, everything was very wild – the leaves rustling underfoot as her ragged ribbon stirred them, the crack of a twig breaking as a squirrel scurried out of her path, the rushing of the wind through the upper branches of the trees. She grasped the trunk of a nearby oak and her elongated nails, hardened like the woody thorns of a rose, dug into its soft bark as she breathed in the woody aroma. She liked it here... The mounting strength of the wild rose within her was driving her to look for a good place to take root even if she wasn’t conscious of it...
So far the wood's prospects as a new home looked good. There was an abundance of sunlight now due to the lack of leaves and instinctively she knew that there would a fair amount of light available even when the trees regained their full canopies due to the trees being fairly spaced out. Competition wise there was some other plants present. The oak she currently gripped had ivy clinging to it and a few metres away her dark eyes could see a holly bush full of prickle and berries. However, no concern rose in her expression; she could crush them with little effort. That was what wild roses did. Smother the competition and choke them into submission. It would be easy, or at least that was what her soul was telling her.
Some sort of noise echoed down from the top branches of the tree and Vyn's musing was broken. A bird? With her senses newly alerted by the bird’s take off her tapered ears picked up the sound of the mulch of autumnal leaves being disturbed not too far off.
Frowning she drifted to peer around the broad oak. Another raevan in the forest... Had she met this girl before? Vyn strained her memory... It was somewhat cloudy, her grip on social skills were slipping as the initial boost that the virus provided faded into plant-like instincts. Perhaps the face did seem familiar. Where from? She was squinting at the other frei now, leaning forwards slowly as if approaching the girl would aid in the recollection process. Lucia’s party. They hadn’t spoken but the rabbit eared frei had been present. One petal detached itself from Vyn’s cheek and floated slowly downwards to the space between them; a splash of wine red on the dark forest floor.

LuLu’s ears flicked around in a constant fit of motion, they were a separate entity. Her body was a stark contrast to the hum of movement. Her limbs jerked in short, awkward bursts. Her companions took a similar approach as they radiated around her. Together they looked like a small mechanism dancing over the forest floor. Each one looked to the other before they made any decision.
Four pairs of eyes were focused on everything.
The rabbit frei took notice of a holly bush ahead of her by a few feet. The sharp prickles gleamed in the downy splotches of light that leaked pass the tree limbs overhead. The bush was framed by a calculated splash of vibrant green ivy. The lovely emerald display served one purpose. They could not eat it. When one of the males ventured forward to sneak a nibble Lulu emitted a reprimanding growl. The hare instantly retracted and flashed his leader a look of apology. LuLu’s eyes flickered with anger before they fell on a twinkle of red just behind a gnarled oak. The color was growing more vibrant as the stranger approached.
LuLu’s shoulders rolled forward as she readied her self in a defensive pose. Two males followed suit with her actions. A third, the one most damaged by hunger, hopped forward and pounced on a scrap of crimson that had floated onto the layer of leaves coating the earth, it was an appetizing serving platter. He quickly gobbled down the velvety petal. Vyn would hear an eruption of squeaks from the rabbit, but LuLu’s trained ears could decipher the rapturous chatter coming from the male. A smile tugged on the bunny frei’s lips.
Apparently the other female was… delicious.

The other raevan’s behaviour was quite unusual... Even the mind fuddled plant could see that. People didn’t normally approach like that, stooped low to the ground with back arched, and her ears were ever so peculiar too – they were moving non-stop; Flicking first one way then pivoting to fall perched in a new position. Constantly alert. Vyn had a hard time keeping up with them so she moved her attention away from the raevan’s puzzling body language. Smaller creatures ringed the other girl, rabbits, all poised in the same defensive stance. She would’ve perhaps smiled at the attractive cuteness of them in other circumstances but the way that they – and their raevan leader -were acting towards her put her on edge. Were they hostile? She frowned. They had no reason to be... She considered asking the frei what could possibly be the matter, forming the correct words carefully – the process was painfully slow... However, before she could speak one of the rabbits had darted forward to snatch up the fallen petal and had eaten it before her.
Something about the way that the hare chattered at the girl... – Lulu, that was her name... She remembered hearing it in passing at Lucia’s – made her suspect that he was telling her something. The swift swivelling of her ears towards the noise added evidence to her suspicions and the curve of Lulu’s lips confirmed them. Regardless of the girl’s understanding of the rabbit’s squeaking Vyn did not like the fact that the rabbit had devoured that petal – part of her – with such fervent enthusiasm. The instincts racing within her urged her to protect her blooms... That was why roses had thorns, to protect their delicate features.
Even without realising it her rune glowed slightly brighter, lifting her up so that the petals on her cheeks and the flower tangled in her hair were well out of reach of the hungry mammal. Her ribbon swirled defensively below her and the ragged edges stiffened into thorn-like protrusions. She didn’t want any trouble with Lulu and her companions but she wouldn’t allow them to eat her petals freely either. It made no difference to her impulses if the attackers to her flowers were insects, mammals or even raevans...

LuLu strode closer to Vyn. She seemed at a loss for words just like her raevan counterpart. Language was long forgotten, a distant memory. She did not it need it to survive in the forest. Not like she needed food.
The rabbit’s patterned ribbon whipped up a frenzy of foliage beneath her. The dingy cloth swirled threateningly with the dried undergrowth. LuLu’s rune pulsed darkly as she gazed up at the wild rose. Her eyes were equally clouded. Lavender orbs soaked Vyn’s features like colorful sponges. She weighed every aspect of the other raevan with a scrupulous regard.
The hares circling around her were like small duplicates, miniature brown planets rotating around their glowing sun. Each one followed LuLu’s lead exactly. The effect of the well organized group would have been stunning if not for the fact the grim look of hunger weighed down their features. Usually gentle eyes were tainted with a feral displeasure. When Vyn floated upwards into the sky LuLu stiffened. Three bodies replicated the motion.
LuLu’s smile faltered. It was like watching a delicate flower bloom in a barren forest. Vyn demanded all their attention. The petals budding from her pale skin clung greedily to the soft flesh. The scrumptious morsels were now just out of reach. LuLu withdrew herself from the wild blossom when she observed the tattered black cloth flowing from Vyn’s waistline morph into dangerous barbs. Each point promised a different kind of pain. The thorns flourishing in the rose’s ribbon only made the flushed petals curving along her frail cheekbones more tantalizing. Vyn was an exotic breed of vegetation that LuLu desired to… sample.
The three hares around the raevan squealed shrilly in agreement. Two of them bounded closer then froze in place as if they were testing the plant. They were perched on either side of Vyn. They evaluated her silently. Was she a threat or…
Food?

Vyn tensed as Lulu’s ribbon churned up the material beneath her in a rather violent manner. For a moment she had thought the girl was about to spring forward in some sort of attack... Every lithe muscle of the other raevan seemed on edge, poised for quick bolting movement, just like her rabbit counterparts. Now that the rose was warily observing them she could clearly distinguish how they moved as a unit; if Lulu stiffened, so did the rabbits, if she moved across the forest floor, they also moved with darting hops. It was quite unnerving being faced with all four sets of eyes; each filled with feral hunger. But the wild rose held her ground under their unified observation. Her ribbon was swirling gently – the sharp extensions acting as a plain deterrent towards the long eared watchers. Would that be enough to prevent them from attempting to take a chance at her petals?
Evidently not. Two of the furred animals bounded closer before pausing. Brave scouts – testing if the plant was as dangerous as its outward defences appeared. The frei grimaced. Did that mean that the quartet really did intend to make an advance on her? Including Lulu? The black slecra’d eyes met once more with their lavender equivalents. Yes. Just as the rabbits were identical to her, she mirrored them in their starved appearance. In that case Vyn would act. Show the critters that they would not find it easy to steal and consume her petals.
But how should she react to this foray? Vyn felt somewhat rooted to the spot, her ribbon’s end was buried in the mulch below her as if it was adding stability to her position, and with a rabbit on each side she was fairly sure that retreat was not an option... She’d seen rabbits before; her memory dredged up when Thorn had attempted to chase one at the park – it had sped across the grass with lightning agility – with them so close to hand and with attack on their brains she stood little chance of outrunning them. Thus the route of defensive aggression came to light. Fingers curled into claws, nails outstretched to snatch at the rabbits if they came to close, Vyn’s brows twitched into a cautioning scowl. If Lulu or her troops attempted anything they would come away bloodied. Unfortunately this change of stance to something more intimidating disturbed the cluster of petals precariously clinging to her face.
A couple of the velvety peels left her skin to descend through the air to land tantalisingly in front of the rabbits. Lunch was served... Would they be daring enough to dine?

LuLu’s eyes met Vyn’s. The purple orbs wavered with an unsettling appetite. The flower was beautiful. She looked like the most delectable fare the forest had to offer. Yet, she did not back down at any of the group’s threats. The undulating spikes framing her body were a testament to that stubborn attitude. It would be too risky to attack. To LuLu, Vyn was looking akin to the holly bush. A grandiose display warning them not to come closer. The rabbit frei backed away slowly signaling to her other partners their retreat.
However, fate would have none of that…
In a sudden burst of movement, a halo of red surrounded Vyn. Like an ethereal deity, her offerings descended slowly towards the peasants below her. The two closest rabbits were eager to relish the delights the rose offered so graciously. They trembled on their haunches. Their eyes impatiently followed the wisps of crimson as they road on the Autumnal breeze. The morsels landed on the ground with a weightless grace.
The pair of hares broke their ranks and lunged at the petals. The finely tuned machine that LuLu had spent so long creating now tumbled to pieces before her eyes. The rabbit raevan bleated out in a foreign tongue, something resembling the own rabbit’s cries. Frustration darkened her features as LuLu watched her two best men charge headfirst into danger. She was able to hold back her third troop; he was already reading himself to rush in and join the assault. The raevan glowered at him. This was no longer an attack. It was a rescue mission.

Lulu’s eyes gave away her reluctant retreat before she physically backed down and a smile grew on the rose’s lips. Satisfaction oozed through her like sticky sap. Her bristling defences had evidently done their job – her petals were well and truly safe from the invasive creatures. Or so she thought, until she noticed the two that had fallen and the furred bodies that were launching themselves forward to eat them. Outrage replaced the pleasure in Vyn’s body. Even if the petals had fallen and would inevitably join the compost of the forest floor the thought of part her body being consumed spurred her into action. With a startlingly quick movement, considering how slow she had been previously, her arm shot out and hardened nails swiped at the closest rabbit. Catching the creature with the blow and it was knocked away squealing.
The remaining rabbit raider tried to scramble away before it met a similar fate but Vyn was on it in an instant. Her long fingers wound around it’s small body and wrenched it upwards away from the crimson stain on the floor. Of course it screeched in retaliation, kicking with powerful back legs and causing her pale skin to break into long red rakes. In-between howling to its companions – no doubt calling for help - it nipped at her fingers and very quickly the soft downy fur she was grasping was matted with blood. But she didn’t let go... No. If anything she was beginning to grip tighter...
Some instinctive action was guiding her hand; tightening her hold... The thrashing of the animal did not deter her and she watched its ever more violent struggles with indifference. Crush the competition. Yes... That’s what she did. Wrap thorny vines around the foe and slowly but surely choke them of sustenance and life. Her fingers were slowly contracting now, increasing the vice-like pressure on the rabbit’s body slowly until a breaking point was reached.
That breaking point came with a sickening crack. A bone broken? Judging by the crescendo of screeching the animal was producing it was unearthly painful. Vyn blinked and her hand twitched tighter - Another snap, followed by some resistance and a breaking sensation inside the creature. It’s calls were high pitched and keening as it appeared to be having difficulty breathing as it’s ribcage was slowly crushed. There was no mercy in the girl’s eyes as further red splatters hit the forest’s carpet. Something hard and a bloodied white was protruding from the rabbit’s pelt.
Finally there was a last crick... The spin was broken and the body went limp.
A soft thud...
Vyn dropped the corpse.

When the first hare fell to Vyn’s power, LuLu felt her breath stop in her chest. The delicate rose tore off her tender facade and revealed herself to be a cruel wild flower. The rabbit leader could only watch in horror as the younger male was slapped carelessly aside like a mere toy. He was instantly gutted by Vyn’s woody claws… LuLu corrected herself… they where more like daggers. The frei inwardly cringed as her friend’s innards sloshed out in a heap of bubblegum pink and licorice red. The other male met a worse demise. LuLu almost had to look away. His cries of pain filled the air. It mixed with the echo of his struggle to escape from Vyn’s vise-like hold. The noise was rancorous and excruciating to endure. It only ended when his corpse fell to the ground. It was as gnarled and tangled as the oak’s roots. LuLu felt a rage smoldering behind her ribs. Liquid heat welled up in the corners of her eyes. Her lids fell and she released the hiss that she had been holding all this time.
LuLu composed herself.
She had already lost two valuable members of her team to Vyn’s thorny clutches. That was two brothers too many in her opinion. Her eyes traveled down again to see the rich crimson that still dotted the forest floor, like threads of scarlet woven into a brown carpet. Splinters of bone littered the murky stains of her former companions. LuLu’s nose crinkled in disgust. She could not stand the idea of losing another to this vile plant.
LuLu gritted her teeth and squeaked a quick command to the only hare left under her command. The male looked at her with a hesitant gaze but when he met LuLu’s agitated glare he immediately obeyed. The hare withdrew himself and hopped back in the direction they had come from. LuLu’s glare then turned to Vyn. She spoke no words to the other raevan, but her intentions rang clearly in the still air between them.
LuLu would avenge her fallen men.

Vyn examined what she had done with dull eyes. Something within her urged her to see sense, view the horror that was staining her hand but the dominant part of her viewed the heinous war crimes as something natural. The rabbit pair had approached her, tried to devour her and had met the consequences. Her hand felt sticky with blood and she flexed it curiously. After the initial reaction guiding her to crush the creature had been accomplished the consequences of the hare’s struggling was sinking in. Her skin was covered in lesions oozing vibrant red liquid and even small movements caused throbbing pain. Raising her gaze she met the bitter eyes of the other raevan.
Would the girl also advance? Vyn frowned. Keeping the bigger opponent at bay would certainly be a more difficult task. The rabbits had been small and had undoubtedly underestimated her – which wasn’t surprising since she had even underestimated herself. Lulu was larger and stronger and would probably approach with more caution than her smaller brethren. Plus Vyn was wounded; she was reminded constantly of that fact by the increasingly painful cuts on her hand and arm... The adrenaline of the scuffle was wearing off.
However, soon it would be topped up again. Lulu’s glare carried a clear message: she would strike back despite the casualties that she had already suffered. The remaining hare was dismissed and Vyn’s amber orbs followed his darting retreat with the faint curve of a smile. This would be a one on one... She braced herself, fingers curling back into the same hooked barbs that had gored Lulu’s troops.
Another few petals floated to the ground. But this time they would be ignored. This was no longer about food and territory... Something far more primal was hanging thick in the air. Revenge.

Vyn’s golden stare fell onto her gore covered fists with morbid disinterest. Her black sclera only accentuated the dull, careless look in her eyes. LuLu bristled. The rose’s barbed fingers where playing idly with her comrades’ blood like it was mere finger paint. Digits spun and twirled around nonchalantly to evenly coat themselves in the liquid essence. The ruby fluid oozed down her knuckles and dripped from her forearms where it joined other cherry hued puddles, just another drop added to the wicked display that surrounded the gruesome creature.
Even when wounded, Vyn held the air of an unconquerable being. Her thorns stretched far and impatient with the desire to take another life. LuLu felt another hiss escape her pursed lips. Vyn was some kind of weed that would not give in no matter how much of a fight you gave it. Yet, LuLu ignored these nagging feelings and stood her ground. Two of her men had given their lives foolishly to this frei. LuLu would make sure that Vyn paid the price for her cruelty. The rabbit would make her give blood for blood.
When there gazes met, LuLu found herself momentarily stunned. Those gilded orbs had her pinned under their intensity. However, the rabbit pushed off the weighted feeling and darted to Vyn’s left, just out of the rose’s reach. Adrenaline was mixing in LuLu’s veins and it powered through her like a burst of fire. The flames of energy spread from tip to toe coursing into ever limb. LuLu felt herself trembling. Was it from drive or… fear?
The rabbit frei gagged on a bitter taste that bled into her mouth. It was a difficult flavor to swallow. It left her throat dry and tight. Her jaw stiffened as she darted behind Vyn. She glided in a circle a few feet away from the rose, the rabbit skirted on the edge of death. LuLu waited for an opening while she combated her desire to plunge into Vyn like a bloodthirsty blade. The frei new those tactics did not work. Two corpses had proven it. LuLu told herself that she would play this battle smartly.

Remaining static Vyn allowed the rabbit to skirt around her like some skittish animal... Of course, she kept an eye tracking her movements but otherwise remained still. There would be no point starting the clash... She was bristling with defences, yes, but she would not, could not, attack. That was not how roses worked – the only aggression they showed was they were under assault. And besides she could see the girl’s muscles tensed, body quivering as if ready to either fight or flee depending on how the situation unfolded. Vyn knew that if she were to lash out at Lulu the rabbit would most likely dart out of reach and Vyn wouldn’t stand a chance at landing much more than a superficial scratch. Thus she would remain composed, thorny ribbon quivering in anticipation for the attack.
Suddenly she was not so sure that her flowers would be protected against the hungry and angered herbivore before her. To be quite frank she was only a plant... Admittedly she was no mere strand of grass and had been blessed with impressive fortifications. But in comparison to the hot blooded and swift animal floating around her she was not skilled in the battles of life. Her groggy mind constructed images of the rabbit girl on other conquest; scrapping amongst her people, playfights that she could draw on for experience – perhaps she had even met with other foes of rabbits and had lived on to fight today. Judging by the commanding skills she had exhibited so far it didn’t seem unlikely. Vyn had nothing like that... She’d just grown into this barbed form without any skill accompanying it.
She shifted uncomfortably on the spot, her hooked hands softening slightly as her resolve wilted. A gap in her defences. A chance to strike?

LuLu pivoted and swayed from side to side in a continuous circle. The rabbit swirled around Vyn like a hostile merry-go-round. Around and around she went. Each completed revolution added to the tension between them like a winding top. Soon the strain would make something snap. But what?
The motion was draining on the rabbit frei; yet, it seemed to have similar effects on her adversary. The constant movement was wearing down on the rose’s resolve. LuLu tried to fight back a few exhausted pants that threatened to escape her lips. She hoped that the prickly raevan before her would crumple first. Lavender eyes scanned her feverishly to pinpoint any opening.
A shoulder slumped.
A hand unfurled.
LuLu struck.
Dirty nails, covered in the grime of half a week’s neglect, dug into the pallid flesh of Vyn’s arms as LuLu embraced the flower in a vicious hug. Fingers dug and ripped at whatever they could get a hold of. A small mouth opened wide to reveal two rows of perfect teeth. The pearly white weapons sunk into Vyn’s shoulder without hesitation.
Even with such a fierce start, the momentum of the rabbit's assault quickly waned. The dam she had built between her and Vyn had been broken. The first ripping torrents of her passion had flooded the rose. Now, however, the rabbit's pent up frustration has degenerated into a faint dribble. Her hands gave a few more sluggish swipes.

Instantly the rose regretted her lapse in concentration – nails raked at her pale skin before she could even raise a finger against her assailant. The creature was pressed up again her, pinning Vyn’s arms between their bodies and using her scrabbling claws to leave wicked red trails all over the canvas of the rose’s skin. She couldn’t do anything but take the attack and her lower protrusions swirled relatively uselessly – swiping at the other girl’s ribbon and leaving only the occasional nick in the swirling fabric. Vyn bucked and swayed as the girl continued her assault and bit deep into the flesh of her shoulder. The teeth easily penetrated the dirty shawl and sunk agonizingly downwards. Excruciating pain blossomed across her body and she convulsed as the attack continued furiously.
Fortunately for the plant the mammal appeared to be losing momentum as her surge of violence sapped at the strength in her wiry muscles. Now she could stage some sort of comeback... Her eyes narrowed as she squinted through the pain and at the rabbit. Blood was smeared around her brush and alongside the dirt caked onto her nails there was a fresh portion of blood; Vyn’s blood. Something inside the frei shrieked at her for failing to provide adequate protection for her flowers, it was ringing in her ears, louder, louder. It drowned out the howling of her wounds until it was white noise. Maddening.
Without a trace of sanity left in her actions the rose pushed forwards, tearing at the being before her. The tendons in her hands protruded like morbid vines beneath her skin as her nails flayed Lulu’s skin. Oh yes – she would hurt this foolish child for endangering her blooms. A hideous smile cracked across Vyn’s face as she continued to lash forward... Now her ribbon was dancing; twirling and slicing through the air like a gruesome spinning toy. Both of them were bleeding heavily. Her jagged attacking movements were aggravating the wounds Lulu had given her and even if her mind could no longer register her body’s screaming she couldn’t support the frenzy much longer.
Rune flickering as her system couldn’t tolerate the abuse much longer she shuddered downwards; she was losing some the vital propulsion required to keep floating. Of course, her arms flailed against the other girl but as she descended she could only scrabble at the ribbon flicking teasingly before her.
Vyn glared from her inferior position, arms drooping to the floor... She couldn’t continue much longer... Yet if the rabbit chose to persist in the fight the last of her energy would be spent on persisting to defend her flora – even if it meant her death.
