Akiko had hardly noticed how cold she was until Yuki began to administer her motherly affections. Gradually, a warm, tingling sensation started to build up in her. This feeling spread to her fingers and cheeks, and the color returned to these areas bit by bit. Akiko smiled at this; it was the first time someone had shown so much care for her since her mother helped her through poverty. She certainly missed her mother, but now she felt she could make it through. With both her daughters gone, Akiko realized she might be the one keeping Aunt Yuki company. She'd definitely do her best to be there for her. In the mean time, she had to go back and change before she caught pneumonia. As she walked along, a curious thought began to roll around in the back of her mind: she was absolutely certain she knew the man in the sea... but who was it?

[We're going to exit to the Tenmoki Estate. I want to advance Akiko's plot a little bit before going off to work. razz ]

A tattered and sea-soaked body lay upon the shoreline of Shimagakure clinging tightly to a chunk of drift wood that was once a boat. Wet a sticky blood ran down the side of individual's face as the chill of the night caused her already pale skin to turn solid white. The girl with freckles on her cheeks and olive colored eyes had been drifting in and out of consciousness since she could remember... That's all she could remember. Why was she out on the sea? What had come about to make her wash up on the shore of a strange island? She was not sure... Where she was, where she'd been going and her name... Hanabira was not sure of anything. The sea gave another push and brought her farther up on shore. With a heavy, yet weak cough the girl who hair was matted against her face dug her hand into wet sand. "C-cold," she chattered between her teeth. Indeed, she was very cold on this island of darkness. Would she survive out here or die of hypothermia? For now, she attempted to crawl away from the cool waters and up to dry sand. Would she make it? Or would the darkness take her again into unconsciousness?

As her cheek rested against the soggy wood in which she had been drifting on, the girl stared down the shoreline. The even ground ahead of her danced wickedly, which forced her to close her olive eyes. It was a dance that caused her head pain and her stomach to turn. With her eyes closed, the darkness had an easier time to grab a hold of her. The girl would have to try and fight it and the cold all at once. With great strength, she forced herself up with her elbows and began to crawl away from the sea. With every incoming tide, it stung her with cool water, which eventually felt warm and then pulled away letting the air cool her once again. It felt like torture, so she had to get away from it as quickly as possible.

The sting of the cold was the only thing keeping her awake it seemed. The painful prickling was beginning to reside as her body grew numb. The girl was forced to stop and breathe into her hands for warmth. In deep breathes made her feel like headed, but she couldn't stand the cold any longer. Huddling herself against the dry land, she tried to steal some warmth from the dry sand, but it was cold now. If the sun were out, the sand would've been like a hot bed, but there was no sun.

As the tide came back in and washed up on her feet, the girl new she had to keep moving. Just because her torso was up on dry sand, didn't mean she was in the clear. Lying there for a moment, the girl tried to catch her breath, but after breathing into her hands, she couldn't really seem to catch it. Between crawling and trying to save warm, the girl's chest felt like it was on fire. Then the rest of her body was starting to get warm... This was hypothermia. She wasn't sure how she knew it, but she knew that the symptoms were kicking in.

Finally, the girl had made it clear from the waters of the sea. Licking her lips, she felt how dry and cracked the soft pink skin was. There was also a salty sting as she licked them which made her face turn sour. She did not like that salty taste. Bringing her eyelids up, the girl looked around to see houses in shambles along with docks. This island was destroyed and desolate... There was probably no life on this island. Pushing herself up, the freckle faced girl huddled herself closely. Her entire body was numb and now feeling hot. She had to get a fire going immediately and dry herself off... or she would die this night. She sat there for a moment trying to will herself to move... Her olive eyes looked down to see that she had no shoes on. She wasn't wearing any pants, only a tattered skirt. The shirt she wore had no sleeves and there was a large tear across the mid section. She wanted to know what happened, but couldn't remember a thing. Setting her forehead against her knees, the girl began to cry silently, alone and afraid.

Nadeshiko was wandering the shoreline of Shimagakure. Not that she wanted to; but there were few other places to go now. The entire island reeked of destruction. It was difficult for her to believe that such damage could be caused in so short a span of time. Wait, no, scratch that. She had probably done just as badly when she was younger. That is, however, beyond the point right now. Nadeshiko was wandering the shore in contemplation. Most of the village and the people who had lived in it were gone, and she had survived. She did not pretend to know how. While she should have been happy that she had been spared, she was extremely upset that the other villagers and shinobi had perished. She hardly knew any of them, and the ones she knew she did not know well, but to think that Nadeshiko was a heartless child is wrong. However cold she may be, and however many tears she did not shed when she was supposed to, she cared, very much. For all the sadness in her heart though, she refused to show it. However, all thoughts washed out of her minds with the tide, as she spotted a ragged girl climbing to shore, then curl up and cry. Her face was unfamiliar to Nadeshiko, but she was quite sure the girl was not an enemy, and more than likely a surviving shinobi. Nadeshiko walked, barefooted and silent in her black battle outfit, over to the huddled figure.

The sun was beginning to come up and warm up the sand beneath Misaki's feet. The little bit of warmth was nice and comforting cause as her brown eyes scanned the shoreline before her... there wasn't much comfort to be found. The only thing that could be seen for miles were crumbled houses and the old trashed remains of the docks that used to line the beach. No one lived on this shore anymore... because it was filled with nothing but the fear of the beginning of the events from just a few days before... A chill ran down the girl's spin as she began to walk along the rubble, but she smiled none the less! She didn't know too much about this little place, other then it needed some sunlight to brighten the darkened moods of the remaining lives that still remained here. She didn't care if it was the last thing she did! Misaki was going to bring some life back to this place!

As her smile grew a little wider, Misaki heard what sounded like whimpers... something was around! Or maybe a someone? As she began scanning the shoreline, she laid her eyes on two forms close to the shoreline... one looking as if it was just a tattered bunch of cloth washed up on shore... The other was one of the youngsters she had seen around. A quick flash of panic crossed her face as she sprinted over to the two forms, but as she got closer she called out, "Everything alright?" She knew everything wasn't, because as she reached the one girl, she noticed the pile of tattered cloth was a girl that was completely drenched... wearing practically nothing at all... "Poor thing!" Misaki exclaimed as she bent over the small, mousy looking girl. "Must be half frozen..." she said as she wrapped the small girl in her arms, "Don't cry..." she mumbled to the girl as she tried to warm her up with her own body heat, as she had nothing else that would really be of help at the moment. She then turned to the other girl standing in silence, "You have any idea what happened to this girl?" she asked in a sweet yet urgent tone.

She had no sooner reached the tattered bundle of rags than another girl showed up. She couldn't tell you the girl's name, but this one Nadeshiko loosely recognized as a shinobi from the village. Nadeshiko could tell that she was on the ruined shores for at least one reason that they shared. She felt a little surprised to realize that she was almost glad of the company. She looked warily at her, then blew several strands of thick, dark hair from her face before answering. The other girl was attempting to warm up the one who washed ashore. Nadeshiko wished she could have helped, but she had precious little body heat or spare cloth to offer. " Then....you do not recognize her? I don't know exactly what has happened, but I can make a shrewd guess that she was from Shimagakure, and by a stoke of both luck and misfortune, managed to get herself onto the beach in this condition." Nadeshiko's voice was barely above a whisper, and was a little hoarse. She said her words slowly, but clearly, sounding almost afraid of the noise. She was not so stricken with grief as to simply shut up for the past twenty-four hours, but simply had had neither reason for speaking or anyone to speak to. She made a gentle motion towards the girl, holding out her hand, half out of sympathy, half out of curiousity.

Misaki listened to the girl's reasoning, and it made sense, but she couldn't be sure... the fact that the small girl was whimpering in her arms meant she was still alive, so maybe she could talk and speak for herself... if not, Misaki would have to take the girl into the village and see if anyone could varifiy that this girl belonged here... and if they didn't get her dried and warmed up soon, then Misaki would have to take the girl to the Clinic to get her checked out. The last thing anyone on this island needed was another dead body on their hands... "Okay, umm... I'm sorry... I don't know you by name..." Misaki said to the other girl, her cheeks turning a bit pink. She had only been here a short time and only been briefed on so much... "My name is Misaki... I'm a newly appointed Chunin on this island to help out!" she said cheerfully, her usual bubbly mood starting to come back. "What I need you to do is to start searching through this rubble and see if you can find something we can use to wrap this girl up in.. So she doesn't freeze to death, ya know? Maybe a blanket... or even an old cloth of some sort... anything would work..." she began trailing off, knowing the girl would get the point. "Right now we need to just warm her up!"

Finding Something Warm!!
This young girl seems to have washed up on shore and looks almost to be frozen to death... What little clothing she has on isn't helping her to stay warm considering they are drenched through! Search the close area of the shore, amongst the rubble to see if you can find anything dry that can help warm the girl up!

On another the other end of the broken shore, a shirtless young man was bobbing about in the sea, coming and going with the tide. Like Hanabira, he was hanging on tightly to a large piece of curved wood, something that obviously came from the hull of a boat. The wood was about half as long and wide as the youth's height, and it was clear that he had fashioned it into some sort of flotation vessel device. Fashioned probably being ensuring it could float by snapping it into the right size. It was also clear that the youth was on his last legs as he had somehow fallen off the vessel, content to let the sea move him, with only his iron grip anchoring him to safety. The vessel itself was also falling apart as it had been hurriedly and shoddily constructed with meagre materials.

What was more telling however was what the youth clenched tightly in his group in his other hand, resting safely atop the piece of wood. It was a dull steel dao, its decorative painted hilt corroded with some sort of chemical burn. The sea itself had also dulled the steel and telltale signs of rust were beginning to appear. The sword was clearly worth a smidgen of what it had used to but the young man was clinging to it like it was some sort of lifeline.

The first thing Kane felt was a wave engulf his head, filling up his slack-jawed mouth, which had been knocked open by a combination of the waves and gravity, with water. It was perhaps fortunate that he regained presence of mind at that moment and was strong enough to spit it out, and clamber atop his plank of wood raft. He started to cough rapidly, throat irritated by the massive amount of salt that had passed through earlier, and his chest pulsed, hurting with each shudder. After performing a cursory check upon the offending area Kane found that he had likely sustained some sort of internal injury, as he had a lovely looking bruise blossoming just at his right pectoral thanks to those mystery assailants which had attacked their boat, which had been swiftly on the way back to Shimagakure. They had tried to fend them off, but the assailants had easily been jounin level, and a ragtag bunch of chuunin and genin clearly stood no chance. A pang crossed Kane's heart as he wondered about his missing teammates, about Aya, Kazuma, Tanu, Kiba... and about Hanabira. His heart clenched at that moment as another spasm of coughs ran through his body. Belatedly Kane noted the red flecks that dotted the wood where he'd had his earlier episode. Just great...

Well, right now he had to be practical and try to get to land as soon as possible. After he was relatively well taken care of with regards to food and drink, and shelter, then he could start worrying about his teammates and sister and try to find them. In the vast world... Kane felt depressed already. Two or three days at sea - honestly, he wasn't sure - had given him a parching thirst and hunger. It was a wonder he was still strong enough to think, much less climb onto his wood planks. So Kane thanked whatever it was that had made it possible for him to do it - whether it be someone above, or just himself. Thank you, Kane, for eking it out for so long!

Then he looked up from his reverie and scanned his surroundings, looking out for any black masses that would indicate land. Right now Kane would take what he could get. Except maybe if it were Haha island. Although that didn't sound too bad. Maybe he could negotiate and try to become a spy or something. And Kane was in luck - just towards the distance, north maybe? Kane had never been too good with navigation..., was an island. A, Kane realised suddenly with a beating heart and a queasy stomach, rather familiar island. It was like someone had switched on the light bulb in his brain, and he felt like he had a strange sense of purpose. He was dying, he was sure, but that was Shimagakure and if he made it there...

Kane's jubilation at stumbling upon his home island was suddenly coloured by the fear at what he would find. Would it just be like the aftermath of the Meho War? Dead bodies, blood everywhere, and his flower shop in ruins with Kushina's glassy eyes waiting for him upon entry? Kane's memory flashed back to a severely repressed period of his past where he'd experienced almost the exact same thing, although arguably much worse. The image disappeared in an instant though. Rokugi, his Buddhist friend, had done his work well and Kane didn't particularly feel like dwelling on negative memories. Not when there was an island to reach. Oh what Kane would do for a drink right about now...

He realised that the only paddle he could use to nudge the boat towards Shimagakure was his dao. Frankly, Kane was surprised that he even had it. He had lost everything else, his kunai, shuriken, exploding tags, ninja equipment, but he had been lucky - they were replaceable anyway. This Yamanaka dao, well, wasn't. Not unless he begged, Kane had a feeling.

Gritting his teeth, and trying to ignore the dryness in his throat and the rumbling of his stomach, Kane hoisted up his dao. He could see the rust on it, and see how these few days of mistreatment had trashed it. He hated to expose it to even more maltreatment, but it was all for a better outcome. Taking a deep breath and ignoring the constant, muted pain in his arm muscles, Kane plunged the blade into the water and began to paddle. Now if only he'd chosen to specialise in the staff instead... Then Kane would have had a veritable kayak!

The problems were already beginning though. Since Kane only had one sword this caused his boat to veer off angle severely. Fortunately Kane had already calculated for that so he attempted to row in an undisruptive way, as far as possible. He knew that the natural imbalance of the forces pushing the boat, as well as the current, would gradually push it towards Shimagakure. Harder to account for and solve were the plagues wracking his body. As mentioned earlier, Kane was hungry as a dog, and extremely thirsty. Words couldn't describe how maddening it was to be surrounded by all this water, and not be able to drink it. If he'd been a Fire element shinobi like Kazuma he would, at least, have been able to boil it... In addition, there was that large internal injury in his chest area as well as various cuts and scratches all over. His body was just generally fatigued, and Kane wasn't sure how long he could last even on this adrenaline rush.
