I just picked up on this thread and its looking great. I'm looking forward to learning here blaugh .
I've got the first three rows of Hiragana down pretty good and some vocab.
I'm so psyched... whee
edit: domo arigatou gozaimasu soshite sayounara.
(I don't know if I'm saying this right but I want to say 'Thank you very much and goodbuy')
I think I read in a book this summer that 'soshite' is used to mean 'and' when it connects clauses. 'To' is used to mean 'and' when in a list or something.

hey everybodies...

im sorry about not posting lessons for you. so ima do a quick one tonight before i gp study for my japanese listening exam tomorrow morning.

Lesson 3 - putting things together to make sentences

i am using information and passages for this lesson out of 'Lesson 1 - Introduction' from Japanese for busy people...for beginners *just thought id reference that so if you have this book it would come in handy with the lessons cause im gonna be using this for 90% of all lessons for the next couple of months*

はやし:たなかさん、こちらは スミスさんです。
スミス: はじめまして。スミスです。どうぞ よろしく。
たなか:はじめまして。とうきょうでんきの たなかです。 どうぞ よろしく。
はやし:スミスさんは ABCのべんごしです。

Hayashi: tanaka-san, kochira wa Sumisu-san desu.
Sumisu: hajimemashite. sumisu desu. douzo yoroshiku.
Tanaka: Hajimemashite. Tokyo denki no tanaka desu. douzo yoroshiku.
Hayashi: Sumisu-san wa ABC no bengoshi desu.

Hayashi: Mr. Tanaka, this is Mr. Smith.
Smith: How do you do. My name is Smith. Im very glad to meet you.
Tanaka: How do you do. Im tanaka from tokyo electric. im very glad to meet you.
Hayashi: Mr. Smith is ABC's lawyer.

Vocabulary

はやし - Hayashi - a surname
たなか - a surname
~さん - Mr, miss, mrs, ms etc (always comes after someones name who you are talking to....this brings respect and honour to that person)
こちら - kochira - this
は - wa - topic marker, particle
スミス - sumisu - smith
です - desu - is
はじめまして - hajimemashite - how do you do
わたし - watashi - i, me, my
どうぞ よろしく - douzo yoroshiku - pleased to meet you. lit. please favour me
とうきょうでんき - tokyo denki - tokyo eletric *company name*
の - possessive particle ie. watashino - mine
ABC - EBISHI - ABC *company name*
べんごし - bengoshi - lawyer

see how you go with this and i will post grammar points, lessons notes and little things for you to practice later on tomorrow.

continuation with lesson 3

Particles

は (wa)

Wa - follows noun 1 indicating that it is the topic under discussion. ie.
わたしは だいがくせいです。
watashiwa daigakusei desu.
I am a university student.

noun 2 is then identified and the phrase is concluded with です「desu」. The topic is often the same as the subject but its not necessary. the object of the sentence can also be the topic. The...wa...desu structure is not affected by person or number.
ex. A-san wa bengoshi desu - "Mr. A is a lawyer."
A-san to B-san wa bengoshi desu - "Mr. A and Mrs. B are lawyers."

Ka - question marker

making sentences in japanese is KANTAN desune!! *its easy* simply put KA か at the end of a sentence and it becomes a question. ex. おなまえは なんですか。onamae wa nan desuka. what is your name?
no changes in words is required even when the question contains interrogative words such as "who, what, when, where and why."

Notes

1. Tanaka-san
San is the title of respect added to a name. San maybe used with both male and female names, and with either surnames or given names. San cannot be used after ones own name. It can also be suffixed to the name of an occupation. eg. Bengoshi-san, Oishya-san etc.

2. Kochira wa sumisu-san desu
Kochira "this one" implies "this person here" and is a polite way of saying "this person."

3. Hajimemashite
salutation used on meeting a person for the first time. It is a form of the verb hajimeru "to begin"

Practice Sentences - please practice saying these sentences

1. わたしは スミスです 「watashi wa sumisu desu」I'm Smith
2. こちらは たなかさんです 「Kochira wa Tanaka-san desu」 This is Tanaka
3. たなかさんは べんごしでは ありません。「Tanaka-san wa bengoshi dewa arimasen」 Mr Tanaka is not a lawyer

have a practice of these and i will post the next lesson [4] soon after my exam on tuesday. if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.

hi all,

here is a usefull website for learning hiragana.
http://japanese.about.com/blhira.htm
its pretty self explanitory, and it shows you the writing strokes so that should give you a hand in writing it. also go to the other lessons after lesson 12 and use that to practice reading some words and writing it.
