Between 600 and 900 people are diagnosed with aplastic anemia each year in the U.S.Summarize what it's like: I just want to start this by saying, I hadn't a clue what it was until I saw my mother deteriorate and die within 2 months of "getting it". So I still don't really understand. It's basically a disease that attacks all red/white blood cells and kills all bone marrow, but according to a website... Acquired aplastic anemia is a rare, serious blood disorder, due to failure of the bone marrow failure to produce blood cells. In acquired aplastic anemia, an almost complete absence of hematopoietic stem cells results in low levels of red and white blood cells and platelets. Symptoms of aplastic anemia are those of anemia, bleeding, and infection. Although bone marrow failure can occur secondary to other disorders, most aplastic anemia is due to the immune system mistakenly targeting the bone marrow.

1 in 20,000 or 1 in 50,000 newborns. Summarize what it's like: I first heard of this syndrome in my genetics course. It is caused due to a deletion in chromosome 5, leading to the larynx developing abnormally. Infants with this syndrome end up having a cry that sounds like a cat. They also will likely have other physical and/or developmental complications. Most fatal complications from this syndrome will occur before the infant's 1st birthday. Children that survive past this first year will generally have a normal life expectancy. Congrats on the recovery. I am glad to hear you are doing much better and wish you continual success in the future.

Less than 200,000 cases a yearSummarize what it's like: You are basically allergic to food. Your body sees food something to attack, which causes a constant allergic reaction in the throat. This is swelling in the throat that makes it hard for the patient to swallow, and can even distort the esophagus to contain rings. This can cause vomiting, food getting stuck, stomach pains, and intestinal issues. It affects all age groups. You constantly undergo a sensation of choking, and it limits your appetite because you don't want to choke, and nothing you do really makes it better. Some people have had to go so far as to insert feeding tubes to try and bypass food going down their throats, and may even be stuck on formulas instead of food. There is no cure for this disease. It is just being discovered, so it is basically only in the testing phase of what might work on it. There is marginal success with medications and diet changes, but nothing can make it comfortable to eat.
