What the F@#K is Moyamoya?!Starts: NOW Ends: Wednesday, October 24th, 9pm EST Rolled: Hopefully within 24 hours of it. 1. Charmed Semi-custom Pure Canine Walker using the new Feral form! 2. Unedited Mutant Charmed Male Pure Caninewalker ( Feral) 3. Unedited Mutant Charmed Female Pure Caninewalker ( Feral)
2017 was hell: Sinus infections, a lime disease scare, and Hurricane Irma forcing the entire coastline of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina to evacuate. We got back from Hurricane Irma to a ton of yard work and loads of rotten food we had to clean out. That's when it officially started.
When it started the day after doing the yard work, I went to my mom sort of Panicky, dizzy, unable to talk clearly, one side of my body not functioning right. I thought I was having a stroke, but when it was massaged away we thought "You can't massage a stroke away". So did my doctor when we talked to her about it after it had continued in spurts the days following, my mind getting muddled and muddy, though she set an appointment for the 24th with a neurologist since they could help with a pinched nerve. I never made it to that appointment, as on the 15th of October, I followed the instructions that, should it last over 30 minutes to go to the emergency room.
Turns out, my first thought was actually correct. Between the 17th of September and the 15th of October, I had suffered Six Strokes.
And they had no idea why.
The first thought was Multiple Sclerosis: About 200 new cases of MS are diagnosed each week in the United States. But it didn't look right so they dug deeper. They did scans of my brain, my heart, my kidneys, trying to find out what was wrong with me: I was a perfectly healthy 31 year old woman, When they brought a specialist to see if perhaps I had Lupis, he suggested a Cerebral angiogram.
And there, that's when I got Diagnosed with Moyamoya Disease, having had it developing over the last ten years, one side of my brain blocked 75% of the way and the other 80%. After a spinal tap proved that it wasn't being caused by some other illness, they released me on October 22nd. One year ago today.
Since then, after going to a specialist as not one of the neurologists here had even heard of it, I learned it was not the disease (Which would have required a a bypass to keep me from dying), but the Syndrome I had: I lacked the tell-tail Puff of smoke the Japanese doctors who discovered it named it after. It's called Moyamoya Syndrome because it mimics Moyamoya, a disease that affects 0.02% of the population of population, is just about as rare, but lacks many of the factors and can, sometimes, be treated purely with Medication: When a healthy young person's artery walls thicken for no apparent reason and causes them to have strokes, that is the Syndrome. Sometimes it can develop into the disease, sometime it doesn't.
Moyamoya Syndrome is an Orphan Disease.
One year later, I haven't had any more strokes, my arteries are repairing themselves with the medication, I'm thinking clearer than I have in years, I'm losing weight and living a healther lifestyle, and in the process of moving up North to where there are doctors with even more experience with my condition than the specialist three-to-four hours away here, and within an hour drive. And, within a year or two, if things keep going the way they have been I may be able to return to doing things I love, such as riding Roller Coasters and Traveling to altitudes higher than 3000 feet.
And to Celebrate, I'm giving away at LEAST three Charmed purewalkers using the new Friendly Wolf/Husky feral form. I plan on going through the list to possibly CC a few before rolling if I see some I really want to do, but no promises.

Questionaire
Without looking it up, what comes to mind when you hear "Moyamoya"?: YOUUUUU. 'Cause you told me a bunch about it already. XD What disease/illness/syndrome has affected your family the most? : I personally have IgA Nephropathy, also known as Berger's Disease, buuuut various types of hypothyroidism and diabetes are probably most prevalent. What is an Orphan Disease?: " condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people nationwide" - fda.gov
Quote: OPTIONAL FOR BONUS TICKET Educate me on one of the Orphan Diseases out there Disease Name:IgA Nephropathy / Berger's DiseaseHow rare is it?: Less than 200k nationwide ;D (I kid, sort of.) Basically, I couldn't find a clear-cut answers. While it is pretty rare, it's listed as one of the most common kidney diseases. It affects men more than women, and Caucasian and Asian individuals than it does people of other ethnicity. Summarize what it's like:What I've experienced: So much bloody pee. All the bloody pee. Basically, as a child, I began getting frequent, dramatic, quick onset UTIs. I must've been like 6 when it began. I continually got treated for bacterial infections, but no matter what they threw at it, they just kept on coming. With at least one UTI a month for a year or so, I was finally sent to a urologist, then finally a pediatric nephrologist. I had a bunch or kidney and bladder function tests run, one including being catheterized, having a gallon of (what felt like the coldest ever) water pumped into my bladder, and voiding on the table in front of my nurses and doctor. I also had a buuunch of ultrasounds and x-rays taken pretty regularly within that time. They'd been finding elevated protein in my urine along with red blood cells (often times frank blood), but consistently ruled out Berger's Disease because of my age (it tends to occur later in life), gender, and it's rarer than other possible causes (they did a loooooot of teaching on hygiene, hoping it was just a little girl wiping back to front and not washing her hands). Growing up with it wasn't overly dramatic or anything. Treatment was pretty conservative because of my age. Typically, immunosuppressants, steroids, NSAIDs, statins, and ACE inhibitors are used to keep the kidneys from becoming overly inflamed, keeping the glomerular filtration rate lower by keeping blood pressure down, and preventing your body from releasing IgA in the first place. I was on a special diet, wasn't really allowed to have salt on anything (and to this day I don't even like the taste of salt so yay), and was aaaalways pounding water. As an adult, I still have at the very least trace amounts of blood and protein in my urine at all times. I keep good track of my blood pressure, keep track of my salt and cholesterol intake, and see a doctor twice a year for blood tests. I get pretty frequent UTI-like symptoms, and when my urine comes back negative for bacteria but positive for the proteins and blood, I get put on short-term steroid therapy. It's kind of just one of those things that you're always aware of and have to monitor, but for me, personally, it hasn't been detrimental to my life. It's kind of scary to know that down the line I may possibly need a kidney transplant and that it can develop into chronic kidney disease, but as of right now everything looks A-okay, and it tends to be a pretty slowly-progressing disease. I had to look it up, but I guess that for 70% of those who are diagnosed, they'll live a normal life without complications. ^__^ I mean. Sorry for the not-so-summary summary. As a fun fact that I still find hilariously ironic: My pediatric nephrologist was named Dr. Hand, and he had no thumb.

Haim-Munk Syndrome also causes early tooth loss, and individuals with Haim-Munk Syndrome can lose their adult teeth by 16 years of age. It's inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, meaning both parents must carry the same abnormal gene for the same trait in order for their offspring to develope Haim-Munk Syndrome. Haim-Munk shares similar traits to Papillon-Lefevre Syndrome, as both cause the loss of adult teeth.

Quote: OPTIONAL FOR BONUS TICKET Educate me on one of the Orphan Diseases out there Disease Name: Ehlers-Danlos syndromesHow rare is it?: Fewer than 200,000 US cases per year - although in recent years it's believed it might be more common but many people are not diagnosed with it because they have a less severe case. There are 13 subcategories and several others that don't currently fit with the current definition but are still listed with EDS. Summarize what it's like: There are several different types which vary in severity but the main problem is EDS effects the stability of connective tissue, for example cartilage. This can create joint problems (hipper mobility, musculoskeletal pain), arterial/intestinal/uterine fragility or rupture, skin elasticity (fragile skin that tears or bruises easily). I'm extremely double jointed (can pop all my figures, one wrist, both shoulders in and out of place and that's only on my arms...) and have had muscular skeletal pain since I was in grade school. My parents have always been very wary of me getting tested because of preexisting condition problems with issuance and while a lot has changed on that front since my problems first started I've never delved into it further.
