Birch smiled back at Veronica as she introduced herself. "It's nice to meet you Veronica. I'm Professor Birch. You already knew that, but official introductions need to be made." He chuckled. "Petalburg eh? That's quite a distance! Well I'm glad you made it here safely." He mused, though their conversation took a turn towards business so that Veronica could pick her starter. Birch introduced all three starters that they had available, allowing Veronica to take her time in choosing. Birch was in no rush after all. Eventually though her choice was a torchic. "Alright, torchic it is then." He grinned, picking up the torchic's pokeball and handing it to Veronica before returning the other two starters and placing their pokeballs back in the machine.
With that settled, Birch put a few keystrokes into the computer next to him and materialized a new pokeball; a replacement for the torchic Veronica had selected. He hadn't returned her torchic out of courtesy. It was her pokemon now, she could return it to it's pokeball if she wanted, or let it stay out, but she had it's pokeball now. After the torchic had been replaced with another, Birch closed the case on the pokeballs and pulled out a drawer filled with empty pokeballs and potions. "Now, even though you managed to come here unscathed, I still think you should be better equipped for the trip back, so take as many pokeballs and potions as you need. I have one more thing to get you though, so hang tight here and I'll be right back." He assured her, taking a moment to leave the room and head down the hall to his office.
Once there, he logged into his PC and opened up the digital phone book, giving Professor Oak a quick call. "Isn't this a surprise! Hello Birch, what can I do for you?" The elderly professor greeted on Birch's screen. "Heya professor! We're out of pokedex's, and still waiting for the new shipment to come in, but I've got a trainer here who needs one, do you have one that you could send over real quick?" Birch asked. Pleeded more like, but Oak dismissed his worries soon enough. "Of course! Here, I've got one on the way now." Oak reassured him. "Ah! Wonderful. Thank you professor." Birch said appreciatively, ending the call. Sure enough, the pokedex materialized in port, and Birch took hold of it before rushing back to Veronica. "Hey! Sorry to keep you waiting!!!" Birch said happily as he skidded into the room again, albeit a little out of breath. "It's customary to give all new trainers a pokedex, but we're sort of on backorder right now. Not to worry though! I had this one special delivered from Professor Oak himself, just for you!" Birch grinned, offering over the device.
Veronica smiled at Birch, taking the Pokeballs and Potions from him and putting them in her bag. It was nice of him to consider her journey back to Petelburg and give her so many items. Hopefully it wouldn't be too rough, but she had her very own Pokemon to keep her safe now. Well, she had to keep him safe as well, but still, the point remained. Birch left to get her one last thing, leaving Veronica alone with her Torchic. She bent down, smiling at the fluffy orange chick. "Hi there, little buddy. Are you excited to go on an adventure together?" Torchic chirped, clearly excited. When Birch returned, he handed her a Pokedex, which she also put in her bag. "Thank you so much, sir! If I have any troubles, I'll be sure to send some mail your way, once I get a Pokemon that can deliver it, of course. Anyways, I better get going! Bye!" Veronica headed for the door, opening it and letting her Torchic walk out, before waving goodbye to Professor Birch and following the chick out.

"…I have my doubts about this." The older man mentally remarked as a hand brushed through the side-swept mess of brown that he had the privilege of calling hair, the slightest of frowns etched across his face as he walked. The Mismagius hovering just to his left shifted to the side to give his trainer a look. "Oh? You don’t trust the plan? Or do you think your abilities aren’t up to par? " The man scoffed, returning his hand to his side as both head and eyebrow tilted up, a confident smile directed at the ghost. "Of course not! I’ve got about a 92% confidence in my skills." He responded, a hand reappearing to give a firm pointing gesture in his claim. The ghost gave a questioning look, the brim of his ‘hat’ feature lowering to shadow the gaze. "Only 92%?""Well yea, I like to give myself room for failure. I’m human after all. Same thing applies in magic too." Faraday remarked back, a curious look crossing his face as he noted the pokemon’s expression grow darker. "What? I think that’s a good percent." The Mismagius just averted his gaze forward again, the slight shift of his head suggesting disapproval.
"I certainly hope the room for error is smaller in that regards.""Oh of course. I like to go for about 98% there." The ghost gave a leery side glance only to see Faraday beaming a bit of a smile at him, finger pointed in a matter-o-fact fashion once more. "’Cause magic will kill you." Calcifer just gave a shake of his head. If he didn’t know the fellow better, he might’ve thought he was joking. But there was some truth in those words. Magic would probably be what killed him in the end and Faraday was quite alright with that.
"But no really, the logic. It’s backwards, don’t you think?" Faraday continued the conversation. "A trainer isn’t exactly 'undercover'." Calcifer nodded his head a bit. "True, but trainers are known to meddle. If you think of it outside the box, then it’s a perfect cover." Faraday rubbed under his chin in thought at that remark a soft 'hm' emitting as he did. It was the kind of out the box thinking he greatly admired and yet at the same time, it wasn’t all that impressive. That was probably the real reason he wasn’t more enthusiastic. But he would just have to learn to deal with it; not everything started out glamorous after all. Faraday shrugged. "Eh… alright then." He conceded. "But if something happens, I want it written in my obituary that I did in fact, question the backwards logic."
"Noted." The Mismagius thought. Only a minute or so more of walking and they found themselves outside the lab. "Here we go." The ghost remarked, floating around to face Faraday. "By the way, I’d think it best if you didn’t go in with the trench on." The ghost pokemon ignored the look of surprise and exaggerated gasp of shock his trainer produced. "It’s too obvious. Undercover, remember?"
"Because the fact I’m not a bright-eyed naïve tween isn’t odd enough?" The Mismagius shook his head narrowing a gaze at the man. "There are quite a few who start their journeys rather late." Faraday raised a skeptical eyebrow. He was clearly, not buying it. After a brief staring contest though, he sighed and conceded, temporarily removing his trench coat, taking a moment to fold it up and store it away in the bag at his side before spreading his arms to show his now lack of coatness."Happy?" He inquired, watching the appraising look he received. "Ecstatic. Are you ready then?""I'd just like to let you know I feel naked. Very naked." Calcifer just gave a shake of his head, maintaining his narrowed gaze. Such dramatics. "I'm certain you'll live. Now... while you're getting yourself set, I'll be checking into something else. Try not to do anything stupid." Faraday just gave his pokemon a 'look'. Stupid? Him? Exactly what kind of stupid he could pull in the process of getting a starter pokemon was anyone's guess.
"Pfft." The man finally spoke outloud, and with a wave watched the ghost fade from eyesight. As the Mismagius disappeared, the Buneary who had been perched on his right shoulder popped his furry white face out, red eyes narrowing and looking about the unfamiliar place. Faraday took note, reaching a hand up to gently rub the side of the bunny’s head. "What’s the matter, Dresden? Worried?""Bun… neary…" Was the cautious response he received. While Calcifer might've been comfortable with the situation, he was not. There was trouble lurking any and everywhere and he had no intention of being caught off guard. He might’ve felt better if Faraday didn’t seem so jovial about it all; the man was just smirking as he tried to reassure the Buneary. "It’s fiiinneee. Let’s focus on the new team mate we’ll be getting instead." He pulled his hand away, moving forward to open the door to the lab and step inside, a bit of a shine in his eye. "You’ll have to show them the ropes for all the new tricks I’ve got planned." Dresden just huffed, turning his focus to the surroundings of the building instead.
"Look at all the fancy…," Faraday remarked, eyeing the machines and devices littering the lab with a curious gaze. Dresden just huffed a bit, on the alert for anything out of the ordinary. His trainer stepped away from ogling the technology to look for a living soul. "Hello? Professor…" He had to pause a moment. What was the name of the professor again? Dresden gave him a less than approving gaze. This was not the time to be forgetting thing. Faraday snapped his fingers though as the name returned to mind. "Birch! That’s it. Is he around?"

"Hmm?" came from the back room, and a head popped out, the man leaning out to look through the doorway. "Oh! Hello! Yes! I'll be right with you!" he called, waving a hand and then disappearing. Some talking could be heard, the sound of an irritated voice, then-- a yelp and the growl of some pokemon. "Yipes!" There was a pause, followed by, "Yes, you.... just hold that there, I'll be right back!" an the professor appeared, glancing back over his shoulder as he smoothed his coat down. Turning his attention back to the man before him, ha clapped his hands together and put on a smile. "Hello there! I'm Professor Birch. How may I help you?" he offered in a friendly voice. Normally it was new trainer's that came to visit... but this man seemed a bit old for that. And, he seemed to already have some pokemon of his own!
"Sure, not a … problem."Faraday blinked once, then twice before his head tilted to the side a bit, eyes shifting to give a curious side glance at Dresden. The Buneary’s gaze just narrowed more, his mouth curving down into a frown as his ears twitched to evaluate the noise. Faraday had heard that Birch was rather… eccentric, but he certainly hadn’t expected to get to witness this his first visit.
"Well then… hm." The older man rolled his shoulders as he waited, swiping his hair again and giving a reassuring smile to the Buneary on his shoulder as he waited"Certainly seems like a nice guy, don’t you think Dresden?"
"Buneary…" Dresden didn’t sound too thrilled, shifting himself to fall back a bit behind his trainer’s shoulder, eyes still scouting for anything strange. So far nothing was flying free from the back room. But who else knew was lurking about? Faraday gave a little ‘pfft’ shaking his head as he shoved a hand in his pocket. "We’re going to have to work on your people skills, Dresden." Ignoring the little huff he received in response, he perked up, offering a smile and a bit of a bow as well.
"Nice to meet you, Professor Birch!" Faraday replied, Dresden shifting to peer at the portly man with a narrowed gaze. Straightening himself up, Faraday folded one arm behind his back, his hand gesturing through the air as he spoke. "So, I’m sure this is a bit… uncharacteristic? Weird? Let’s go with weird. But I’m actually here to get a starter pokemon and start a wonderful journey into trainer hood. Or whatever it’s called nowadays." Dresden blinked, his gaze shifting to stare blankly at his trainer. What kind of introduction was that exactly? Faraday didn’t seem phased at all, a pleasant smile still on his face. "If that’s not a problem. I’m a bit past that recommended age mark, I know." That would certainly be awkward now that he thought about it. "But a Mudkip would be worth talking so long." If there was any benefit to all this it was getting a chance at a starter of his choosing. And who in the world didn't want a Mudkip?

The Professor blinked as the man started to explain himself, going on a bit. Oh, my, well... He was a bit old for this process! But, that was no matter! Birch gave a smile and a nod, gesturing with a hand over to where he kept the pokeballs. "Don't worry, we get a few older trainers! The ages to begin a journey really can vary, you'd be surprised! Now, ah, Mudkip you say? Hmm..." He stopped at the pokeballs, looking them over, one hand at his hip and the other over his mouth. Which order did his aid say that he put them again... Torchic, Treecko... Ah, yes, Mudkip was that one. He plucked the ball up and handed it over to the young man, but moved to grab up another device as well.
"Now, with that, I'm assuming you'll be wanting a pokedex? It not only helps collect data for us professors, but it helps you identify countless pokemon that you encounter, too! If you can just give me your name, I can register this to you, and send you off on your way!" he offered, moving to the computer with the pokedex. Luckily, they had pretty much made this whole process as efficient as it could be, by now.
Well it was good to see the professor was so good natured. Even better that the whole matter of his age didn’t mean much in the process of his getting a starter pokemon. All according to plan; which was yet another bonus as he didn’t want to know the talk he’d get if he’d managed to somehow mess this up. Leave it to Calcifer to suggest he could do something stupid.
"Of course! I’ve no doubt about it." Faraday remarked back, arms lacing behind his back as he followed the professor over to a table with three particular pokeballs resting on top of it. He leaned over a bit, eyeing them curiously, Dresden on his shoulder peering at them as well. The detective straightened up as one was picked up and handed to him, the smile on his face growing considerably as he took the ball.
"Amazing! Thank you, it's much appreciated." He thanked, looking the ball over a moment before offering it up to Dresden to check. He turned his attention back to the professor, head nodding once more. "Absolutely! What kind of trainer would I be if I didn’t have a pokedex?" It was also a requirement he get one, though that was for completely different reasons that didn’t need to be known. Which came the conundrum. A name. "Matthew. Matthew Dixon." He replied with a cheery smile. Ok, maybe the conundrum comment was a stretch. Faraday was no stranger to false personas and while in this situation, he might've been going out with his true face on, that didn't mean he'd be using his real name. There was still a cover to maintain.
While the professor worked on the registry, he retrieved the ball from Dresden, looking it over once more. His gaze seemed to narrow a bit as he did though; something seemed off. "Professor, I think there’s a bit of a problem…," Faraday remarked, the frown on his face showing a level of concern as he held up the pokeball. With a press of his thumb on the ball’s button, it sprung open to reveal nothing but empty space. No light, no pokemon, nothing. "This pokeball’s empty." Well now, how had that happened?

Professor Birch nodded as the man gave him a name, quickly registering the pokedex to him, and then gathering up a few other items to give him. He was just turning around to present the items to the man, all set out on a tray, when Faraday seemed to notice something. He blinked a few times, then, quickly, his expression turned to shocked panic. "Wh-what!?" Hurriedly, he set the tray down. "The pokeballs empty? But, how...?" Looking dressed, he reached out for the pokeball. "I'm terribly sorry about that. Here, if you'll give it to me-- thing must be malfunctioned... But then where did... Don't you worry! We will find a pokeball with its pokemon in it," he rambled a bit, still looking greatly concerned at this apparently missing pokemon situation.

It would’ve been a lie to say it took Faraday a lot of restraint to maintain his concerned look as he witnessed Birch’s response. He did have a tinge of sympathy for the man; the panic was quite real and it was evidently clear that this was possibly not the first time he’d experienced a missing pokemon situation. There had been a bit of a recent crime spree in lab thefts. Maybe, this was a bit in ill taste.
But Faraday could never resist an opportunity and this was one of them. Luckily enough, the professor’s concerns would quickly be put to rest. As the man reached for the pokeball, the front of Faraday’s button-up shirt seemed to wiggle and before either knew it, the head of a little Mudkip popped up and out, blinking and looking curiously forward at Birch. "Mud~!" The tiny blue pokemon squeaked, blinking and still shifting her head about to get a view of her surroundings. This was certainly not the entrance she’d expected to make.
"Oh well, what do you know," Faraday remarked, shooting the professor an apologetic smile. "Guess there was a Mudkip in there after all." And just to assure the man that the Mudkip was in fact the one that should’ve been in the pokeball, he tapped it to her head, light beam appearing and returning her safety.
"Sorry about that, couldn’t resist a bit of a magic trick." Faraday remarked as he gestured to the ball, once again handing it off to Dresden to hold for the moment. "Didn’t mean to cause you uhm… any stress." That was kind of the opposite purpose of a magic trick. He stepped forward to retrieve the items Birch had intended to give him before the panic, giving another smile and nod as he tucked the items away in his bag. "Thank you for the help Professor Birch, I think I’ll be on my way." Faraday gave another little bow, clapping his hands together lightly as he took a step back. "Hopefully I’ll see you again and uhm… take care of yourself alright? Maybe see a show." With that Faraday gave the man another farewell wave before turning on the heel of his boot and heading for the door.
Well that’d went well.
(Faraday recieved a Mudkip, Pokedex, Pokeballs and Potions after giving a poor professor a heart attack. GG.) -

Birch blinked as something moved, and froze in his reaching for the pokeball. He stared at the man's shirt, which had began to move, not at all sure what all to expect. He certainly didn't seem to predict what did happen, pulling back in surprise as the mudkip popped into view. "Oh!" he exclaimed. It seemed to take him a moment to catch on, but when he did, he laughed, a big, hearty laugh, his hands on his hips. "That was a good one!" he admitted. He scratched the back of his neck, looking a bit sheepish, and secretly relieved. "You definitely got me..." He was pretty sure that was a first.... Magic definitely wasn't very commonplace with pokemon, let alone with those that were coming to get their first pokemon.
He shook his head and waved a hand at the mention of causing stress, still giving that smile as he recovered a bit. "Of course, of course. You too! Take care!" he called. What an interesting young man.... He watched him leave thoughtfully, but blinked as another yelp and a yell came from the back, jumping as he recalled what he was doing before, and quickly scurrying back.

"Lina, are you sure about this?"
Alina laughed softly into the phone in her hand. "Even if I wasn't, it's a bit late to be asking that, isn't it?"
Her brother huffed in annoyance on the other end of the line, making his sister laugh again in earnest. "Don't worry so much, you know I can handle this."
"Well yeah, but... How long are you gonna be gone?"
Walking down the front path of Professor Birch's lab, Alina paused, and for a moment her expression turned sad before flitting back to its usual calm confidence. "I don't know," she admitted, "There's something I need to do, and it'll take some time."
"Yeah, you've said that, but you still won't tell me what you're actually doing," her brother pointed out, and she could practically see the scowl on his face.
Alina stopped walking again, now right in front of the door, and sighed. How could she explain her plan to him, tell him about their family's business connection to Team Aqua and Team Magma? That alone would be hard enough to take, without learning that his sister was leaving home to ultimately conquer both teams and reform them as she saw fit. He would have to learn eventually, but not now. "Look, I'm sorry, but I have to go. I'm at the lab now, but I'll call you tomorrow. Okay?"
He grumbled a goodbye, and Alina put the phone away as she pushed open the door to the lab hesitantly. She'd decided to put on a nervous but excited personality for Birch, mimicking the new trainer jitters she was sure he saw almost every day. He'd be comfortable with that.
"Uh...hello? I'm looking for the Professor?" she spoke up as she poked her head around the door.

Birch was puttering around in the back, trying his best to locate the papers of a the recent field study he'd completed, when Alina poked her head into the laboratory. As such, an aide approached the young girl, pulling the door open wider to invite her in further. "Let me guess, you're here for a starter?" the woman guessed, the twinkle in her eye and the soft smile that pulled at her lips indicating that she was teasing. "Hold on one moment and I'll go fetch him." The aide smiled once before she headed towards the room the professor had holed himself in, indicating Alina to follow.
She knocked on the door before calling out, "Professor, you have a trainer who wants to meet you." The sound of papers being rustled became audible before the Professor himself spoke up, "o-oh? Thank you, Elena, just give me one minute to--" the sound of something heavy falling drowned out the rest of the man's words, before he yelped. The aide sighed and shook her head in wonder before she turned back to Alina, her look apologetic. "The professor will be with you in a minute."
And he was, popping his head out of the backroom and smiling brightly at both Elena and Alina when he spotted them. He pulled his body further out into the main room, tripping and just barely catching himself on his way out. "Yes! Hello, young lady!" Despite his trip-up the man remained his usual jovial self, offering the trainer a hand to shake. "What can I do for you today?"

"Ah, thank you ma'am!" Alina exclaimed, bouncing a little on her heels as if she had too much excited energy to hold still. This really was just as easy as she'd been told; did they have any security here at all? Maybe that was part of the reason the lab was out in such a remote little town. The place had to be a prime target for pokémon thieves, so she'd definitely be able to ask her question if she phrased it innocently enough.
She blinked in genuine surprise at Birch's entrance, but managed to keep from even smiling at his trip-up. "Um, hello!" Alina brought back the nervous expression from earlier as she shook the Professor's hand. "I'm looking to get a starter pokémon and PokéDex? My name's Alina V--" she cut herself off, actually realizing that Birch would probably recognize her last name, and that she wasn't sure what his opinion of her family's business was. Oh well, caution to the wind then. She could make it work. "Um, Virale," she finished meekly. To be fair, there was no reason he should know they did business with shady figures as well as legitimate ones, as they'd kept it secret from their own daughter for some time--and she was not an easy person to hide things from. But playing it as though she was a rich girl who was a little embarrassed to reveal that she came from money might actually help, if she convinced him that she was trying to do something on her own and grow as a person, which was actually true. The best lies had a grain of truth, after all.

Birch offered a gentle smile upon noticing the shy excitement Alina exuded, two emotions he often saw in the new trainers that visited him. It was understandable, most of his visitors were young children leaving the nest for the first time, they were exploring the world all on their own. Alina was a bit older than his usual bunch, but the journey she was about to experience was the same. The professor waited politely for her to tell her full name, and once she had his eyes lit up in recognition. He hadn't expected the daughter of a wealthy family to visit his humble little laboratory, but then again starters were hard to come by, even for the economically blessed. "Ah! Well, Ms. Virale, what kind of starter did you want?

Alina smiled sheepishly. "Heh, to be honest, my parents weren't exactly...thrilled about me doing this," she admitted, then her expression turned determined. "But...if I'm gonna run a business someday, I have to be able to take care of myself without them helping me. Books and classes can only get you so much." Despite the idealistic tone, this was basically the truth. Alina was aware she needed experience in the real world to be in charge of anything, whether it was her parents' business or her own personal goal of a united Hoenn team.
At the Professor's question, she hummed thoughtfully and rocked back and forth on her heels. "Well, I was thinking about it a lot on the way, and I think I'd like to see any Torchics you have available?"
