Attic Endeavors

'I really don't think you should be up there.' Darke hummed through their link as his head poked through the small square opening that led into the attic. He had his front paws braced on the third stair, and he refused to go any higher than that. In all honestly it was a wonder the thin wooden planks even held him that much...'The floor will fall through, and you'll hurt yourself.' The Alihora informed him tersely. As he looked on from his perch, he could just barely make out Mae scrounging around in the darkness near the back of the large, open area, with only his faintly glowing palm to guide him. 'What could you possibly want from up here, anyway? It's so... dusty...'

Mae sighed as he shoved another box away from him. He crouched near the back of the space, where all six boxes of the family's stowed belongings sat. For some reason, he'd always thought there were more... Maybe there had always been the idea for more, since the attic was certainly large enough to accommodate, but neither of his parents were home frequently enough to fill it. And now, Mae wouldn't be either... He ran the hand he wasn't using for light across his face, and huffed out in annoyance. "I just want to see if there's anything useful up here." He said aloud as he glowered at the two boxes he had yet to look through. So far he hadn't found much. Mostly decorations and weird books, plus a few mementos Mae's father kept. It was all painfully useless, as he feared the last two boxes would be.

He sighed and pulled the second to last box toward him (with no small amount of difficulty, considering that it was quite heavy). Curiosity tugged at him, but he tried to stamp it down for fear that this box would be as useless as the last. He unfurled the cardboard lid, and held his faintly glowing palm up to see the contents. Just... More books and loose papers. Mae groaned. He picked one up with a peculiar gem on it and flipped it open. He could hardly see the words in the dim light, but he didn't have to be able to understand them to realize that the book contained magical incantations. He sucked in a breath. "Darke, look!" He shouted in excitement, bolting to his feet and dragging the box across the floor and over to Darke for inspection. "These are Magical Tomes!" Mae exclaimed, thrusting one of the books under Darke's nose.

The Alihora was skeptical. "Don't you think it's weird that you found these right after you mentioned wanting to take up mag-"

"I can't believe they were up here the whole time!" He knew he was grinning like a doofus, but he didn't care. Not one bit. "Here." With an extra heave, he shoved the box over the edge, making Darke yelp as he moved to try and catch it, then realized the futility of the effort. "Take those into the living room so I can see 'em better. I've got one last box to check." The Orderite told his companion. Darke responded with annoyed grumbled, but he slunk to do as he was bid, leaving Mae with the sixth box.

Anything inside would surely be a letdown compared to what he'd just found. But he may as well scavenge, anyway. So when he opened it and spotted, not more junk, but an assortment of glowing feathers, paper talismans, and weapons that may have been his parents' at one point, he squealed in glee. This box was heavy, but not nearly as much as the last one. After testing it a bit in his hands, Mae concluded that he could probably carry it down the stairs without hurting himself.

As he made his way into the living room to see Darke shuffling about with the Tomes and Recipes, Mae couldn't help but beam. Despite what started out as a fruitless endeavor, the adventure to the attic had certainly been worth it.

That's Craftsmanship

"It always was amusing to see you surrounded by so many books." Darke chuckled as he watched the fuchsia-haired man spread nearly all of his recent findings out on the floor. It was impossible for him to have everything he wanted within arm's reach, but it was cute to see him try. The Alihora perched on the outskirts of the blossoming mess, unable to keep his amusement from slipping through the Bond. It had been even more adorable when Mae was smaller, and Darke could hardly find him amongst the debris, but this sight did give him a rather welcome feeling of nostalgia. Better than what the past few months had brought them, anyway.

Mae shrugged. "I can't help but be curious." The Orderite admitted, picking up a bound book and flipping through it before setting it aside. There was just so much to go through... He hadn't been aware there was so many useful items up there, or he would've checked sooner! Now he just felt overwhelmed... Excited! But overwhelmed. He shuffled a few loose scraps of paper into a pile, then pushed them to the edge of the mess. As he sifted through a few more books, he found another slip of paper that had manages to escape from the rest of them.

"Hey, look. We actually have all these supplies!" Maeron said eagerly as his gaze flicked over the slip of paper. He dug around in one of the boxes, pulling out a whole mess of thread and a sewing kit.

Darke snorted in amusement. "Wait, wait. Don't tell me you're going to try and make something with all that!" The Alihora chortled. "You're just not that dextrous, Mae." Darke informed him.

A dark tinge of flustered annoyance ghosted across the Orderite's face. "W-well that's not true! I can definitely do it! Look, the instructions are right here! Anyone can do anything with instructions!" Mae snapped, violently shaking the strip of paper in Darke's direction. The Alihora only snorted out another bout of laughter and padded off in search of somewhere less cluttered to relax.

How dare Darke not think he could follow a simple list of commands? It didn't look like a challenging article to make, and he really didn't need a lot of stuff, either... With a huff, Mae plucked up his supplies and headed over to sit at the slightly less cluttered table. He had a few bits of cloth from his trip to the marketplace. Heh! He knew they'd come in handy! Darke had disagreed then too.

Mae hummed in self satisfaction as he cut the cloths into the appropriate shape. That part was easy! All that was left was to stick 'em together! But the Orderite man quickly realized that the sowing portion was actually... rather difficult. It probably would've been easier when he was younger and his fingers more smaller and more dainty, less calloused from frequent use of his weapon. Just threading the needle was almost an impossible challenge to overcome. But with persistence, a refusal to let Darke be right, and a little spit to straighten out the threads, the hardest part was done. Mae stitched away, trying to be as accurate as possible, doing his best to follow the pattern given to him in the instructions.

It was a little harder than he thought it would be. But he'd never say that out loud. Instead, he stripped off his usual t-shirt and vest and pulled his own personally hand-made article over his head. With a triumphant grin, he strode off in search of his companion. "Well?" He demanded tartly as he posed in the doorway. "What do you think?"

Darke looked up from preening himself, his sky gaze skeptical. "It, erm... fits you?" He offered uncertainly. But... overall it was a little sloppy... The stitching was mismatched, and loose threads hung out everywhere. It didn't even really sit against his shoulders like a vest should... As he'd thought earlier, Mae should probably leave this to the professionals. "Maybe you should just put your other clothes back on..."

The Orderite huffed and spun on his heel, heading back to where he'd deposited his casual wear. Maybe this one wasn't perfect... It was his first shot! What did Darke expect! He'd just have to keep practicing to prove that negative Alihora wrong!

The Use of Spare Time

"Pretty sure there are more useful things we could be doing right now," Darke rumbled, only barely trying to conceal his annoyance as he watched his boy pluck away at a piece of cloth with needle and thread.

Mae snorted, trying not to let his own frustration at how often he pricked his finger with the needle show. Even if it did seep through the Bond like ice melting over carpet in summer. "You were there for those dragon attacks. And now with all these Mara flying about, I really don't think you can have too much armor."

"Uh, I almost watched you drown in a lake while fighting those dragons. I don't think more armor would've helped you there," the Alihora scoffed incredulously. He rose from where he lay on the rug and plodded over to observe the work over Mae's shoulder. As he gazed down at the boy's work, he snorted out a puff of air in his Orderite's ear. A thick, heavy white cloak. Yeah, such a thing would do him wonders while he was fighting Mara, dragons, or whatever the hell else. If he'd been wearing something like that when he'd fallen in the lake, Darke doubted he would've been able to reclaim his boy from those shining waters...

Mae reached an arm back to pat the Alihora's nose. As his fingers came into contact with wet, silky feathers Darke huffed and recoiled, having been instantly assaulted by the coppery tang from his boy's digits. "The very least you could do is be more careful."

Mae sighed and splayed the heavy fabric out across the table. With all the tiny red splodges that dotted the seams, he was starting to wish he had some sort of dye or something. He'd look so much cooler riding his trusty Khehora steed while swathed in a cloak made of pure night, instead of a white one repeatedly stamped by pinpricks of red failure.

He groaned and leaned back, crossing his arms behind his head as he tipped the chair far enough onto its back two legs that he could toss his feet up onto the table. "You really don't think it's neat to be able to do this kind of stuff on your own? Anyone can go out and buy armor, but I'm an adult now, and I think having a nice variable skill set is always a good thing," Maeron informed his companion as he tilted his head back to stare up at Darke's icy eyes.

"You can have more useful skills," Darke retorted. "Something less- Less... Silly-looking."

Mae huffed and let the legs of his chair crash back to the floor. With a sweep of his arm, he collected his belongings from the table; cloth, thread, pins, needles, and the explanatory tome. "Well, when you think of something you find less embarrassing, please feel free to tell me. In the meantime, I'll be finishing this on my own. Someplace you can't judge me." The Orderite boy flicked his hair and strode off down the hallway, leaving Darke to simmer in his agitations and thrust notions of exactly how he felt about the situation down the Bond.

No, Really. Stop

He was starting to feel like he may almost be getting the hang of it. He still had to stare at the exact location of his stitching for several straight seconds before actually doing anything, and he lacked the practiced ease that most grandmothers had with these simple patterns, and if he focused for too long, his arms still turned to jelly and he was forced to occupy his time with something else for the day. But he was getting it, even if it didn't sound like it.

After his first two 'successes' (as well as the strange mish-mash of curious weaving that happened in between), Mae realized that he didn't have to follow the exact patterns in the scrolls to the letter. Well, he could, and it would be fine, but he could always improvise and come up with a better fit. He'd decided on pants today, because why not have the entire set so he could walk about in all his tacky glory?

Tacky.

That's what Darke thought it was. The Orderite knew his companion wanted to support him in all he did, but somehow, all he saw was 'tacky' whenever Mae proudly tugged on a new garment that he'd made all by himself. It would be cool. It had all the potential for coolness that Mae thought it already had. But it wasn't. Not yet. Right now it was still tacky. As much as Darke despised not being around his boy, the two partners had quickly come to an understanding that perhaps it was best if they weren't together during the times when Mae wanted to play with his pins and needles and thread. The negativity and hesitance seemed from Darke through the Bond and made the Orderite grouchy, defensive, and abrasive. Besides, Darke was a full-grown Khehora. He could hunt on his own without worrying about his Expert Warrior Bonded, right?

Mae sighed softly, rubbing at his eyes to clear away the fogginess of staring at something for too long. It was annoying (and slightly saddening), but for now, this was the trade he had to make. He was granted a little bit of alone time to practice at his leisure while Darke went off and experienced tiny moments of what a feral Khehora might feel like.

'I don't like it. I don't know why there are those Khehora in an uproar about the Bond. It's boring. It's lonely. It's depressing,' Darke's thoughts nudged against his own. Mae could sense the Alihora in the treeline, could feel his brooding from here.

As the Orderite stretched, he retorted, 'No one told you to leave. But in any case, I'm packing up for now, so come on back.' Relief spread through him. he was fairly certain it came from Darke more than himself. 'Besides, I don't think you'll have to worry about being seen with a 'tacky'-looking Orderite for too much longer. It's not great, or even very good yet, but it'll be decent enough for public before you know it.'

A swirl of nondescript thoughts danced through his mind as Darke struggled to settle on what he should say next. As long as Mae didn't purposefully try and embarrass him around the other Guardians, then he really should try and support him. He was obviously going to be on this kick for a while longer, regardless of what the Aiskalan said, so... 'Just keep practicing.'

Serenia Defenders

Girls are weird. And combative. I tried to save this girl from Mara, helped defend her farm, was pretty cool, of course... And somehow, she literally ignored every order I gave her. I was only trying to save her life and keep her from getting hurt, and she really couldn't work with me at all on that! How annoying.

Just Listen!

We must be getting better at taking down Mara. Sure, Darke's magic does most of the work, but having me around has to be a little helpful. We would've had one less thing to worry about if that girl would've just obeyed me, though! Ugh! Doesn't she know she's not match against a rock? Whatever. No one was hurt this time.
