Sulksati was very worried. She flew often along the lake shore in an attempt to keep an eye on the families of Peisio dragons that lived there, and had noticed an uncanny amassing of forces at the shoreline, of dragons and magescans both.

The sight filled her with dread - it did not bode well. Her emotions were reflected in the lake, which shimmered and seethed to the magics of the dragons lying in wait within it.

Blood would be spilled today. She could already smell it in the air. She glided in closer. She had to stop it - everything she was, everything she believed in, mandated that she stop the madness. But where to start? Who to start with. There were so many of both sides - magescans kitted out in matching uniforms, all smelling of strength and determination, dragons glittering and blue, wary and ready in the Serenian sun.

But she knew nobody here, no familiar face presented itself to the alikhora, nor familiar markings on the undulating backs of the dragons.

And then she saw them. It was the little dragon from long ago who had picked a fight with Hastars, grown now, with hatchlings. She felt a double sense of dread and pride as she looked at him - she had watched him often and knew his markings.

He would be fighting too. He would die. She would start with him. She swooped in on quiet wings, calling softly to him, trying not to alert his allies to violence and cause more bloodshed. She noted a nearby magescan - one that was strangely familiar, though she did not remember him. She ignored him for the time being - she had to stop this.

Mae plucked at the long sleeves of the coat the signified him as a Guardian. He was all for flashy uniforms and being part of a team and whatnot, but... didn't they have something with a little less sleeve. He felt like he could hardly move... Not for the first time, he rolled his shoulders against the material, in hopes that it would loosen the fabric. To no avail. Obviously strong warriors needed strong garments. Or something.

"At least you wear it well." Darke hummed in amusement. Mae snorted. Easy for the Khehora, who was only obligated to wear a necklace, to say. And he was pleased about it, to boot. "Think of it this way, the sooner we finish the job, the sooner you can get back into your usual attire."

Mae glowered at the other Guardians around him. Any mission that required forty or so people to accomplish wouldn't be done in any small amount of time. That he was sure of. Even if forty... was a bit of an overstatement. "Besides, it's a pretty noble thing, to save a bunch of kids, don't you think? I mean... I bet the ladies think so too, hmmm?" The Alihora teased, nudging Mae's shoulder with enough force to send him stumbling to the side.

Mae couldn't help but grin, and he shoved Darke back, however useless it may be. "I doubt we'll be seeing many women. And if we do..." He glanced casually to one of the hefty females sporting the same Guardian attire as he was. "I doubt they'll be my type."

The dragon snarled at her defensively as she approached.
"Don't you remember me?" she said quickly, gliding over, trying to be as nonthreatening as she could in the air.

The dragon, initially did not respond, but suddenly it became more wary than threatening. It must have, she thought, caught her scent and recognized it. This was promising. "Yes. I do. Thou art the Khehora of long ago whom I saved from the vicious beasts of the woods. And who I taught to swim."

That wasn't how it was at all - she had saved him, and had known how to swim beforehand, but she smiled a draconic smile with relief. He remembered her. He was willing to talk to her. "Yes."

He rumbled, pleased. "My playmate of old! Hast thou come to offer thy services and respect to me on this eve of battle?" she could see him preening and was filled with pride and love - she had seen this little one grow up, and he looked as though he had grown up so well.

But she was also filled with fear. That pride she herself was proud of would kill him. "Yes." she said, "But I have seen the foe and I think that the ending will not be good. Many will die today."

"Of course." rumbled the Peisio inquisitively, "But that is always the case with war."

"There are too many!" she protested, "Tank upon rank of well-equipped magescans! They will tear you apart!"

The dragon rumbled, not approvingly. "We are dragons, little playmate. We will not fall to the filthy two legs." he snarled, but not at her. "This lake is our home. This world is our home. Yet they hunt us and kill us and destroy our young and nests. We will not stand for that." He seemed to relent, giving her a draconic smirk, "But your concern is understood, as my playmate and lesser. But you will see. I have grown up now. These two leggers will fall before me." its blue eyes glittered as a mighty, multi-voiced roar echoed down the vast, swirling line of dragons. "Just watch." It streaked, with a formation of dragons (who ignored her thier impending glory for the time being), towards the guardians and towards the familiar orderite. With a cry of dismay, she shot after them, her soul heavy with dread. It had begun, and it was too big for her to stop.

Mae would've loved to continue the leisurely task of supervising the hoard of dragons that had gathered over the water. Flying out to face them over the lake was foolhardy at best, and disastrous at worst. So, naturally, the Guardians waited for the Peisios to strike first. Dragons were proud and noble creatures, so they'd naturally want to take a bite of any two-legger that strayed too close to the waters. Even if it happened to be a troop of well-trained dragon-slayers. Well, reasonably well-trained, in any case. There had been a few moments when Mae had wondered if they really would be drawn into battle. There were plenty on both sides, so there was no telling who would come out on top, realistically.

Though neither Mae nor Darke had questioned whether they would survive.

And quite frankly, Mae doubted any of his comrades would be quick to fall, either. As the dragons' roar reverberated down the line, his suspicions were confirmed. Just to the left of him, a Dovaa woman stepped forward. She was small, wiry, easily breakable for all intents and purposes. Except she wasn't. Not really. The woman crouched, drawing her hands through the moist grass around her feet. Her shoulders shook as she rose slowly, her fingers tense as they flattened to mold her magic forward. The ground rumbled, dirt shifted. The roots that sprang forward were thick and knotted, sturdy enough for a grown man, like Mae, to run along with minimal reservations. And they leaped out over the water, giving the Guardians a little more room to move. A Ysali Dovaa... A powerful one...

As soon as the girl noticed his attention on her, she turned to him with a scowl. "Are you going to stand there, or are you going to fight?!" She demanded.

Maeron started. "R-right!" He replied, feeling the color rise to his cheeks. Darke's humor radiated through him as he charged ahead, fanning his wings a bit to lift himself onto the twisting roots before continuing his trek. He was level with the dragons now. There were other Guardians following along his path. There was magic flying from behind him. And he ignored it, eyes on the large Peisio before him. They were a swirling mass. A swirling mass of blues, greens, and purples, and if he didn't watch himself, he'd be washed away in their tide. Mae had a brief moment to spot a speck of blurry white and green amongst their ranks before the first dragon was upon him.

There was a swirl of water rising from the lake at his side. He had no way of knowing if the magic was caused by a Dovaa on his side or a dragon on theirs. Darke's own feelings pulsed through him. 'Not a friendly...' The Aiskala magic raced from his chest and out. Mae could feel it as if it were his own. They no longer had a need to share words or even thoughts. They just knew.

What has one been a tendril of water was now a column of ice. The dragon was practically on him now, fangs and teeth bared. As it dove for him, Mae leaped to the side, his feet leaving the roots and finding a solid footing on the slick pillar as the dragon braked to find its prey. Before its bulky form could turn and find him again, Mae kicked from his perch and crashed into it, one of his swords driving deep into the space between on of its ribs and ripping up, up, up until it was shredding through delicate wing membrane as well.

When it whipped its head around to take a bite from the Orderite, Darke was there, his claws digging into the Peisio's eyes and his teeth grinding on one of the dragon's horns as a restraint. It could do nothing but swat blindly at the man and his Khehora before finally succumbing to blood loss and fading to dust.

Suluksati felt so helpless as she lost sight of him in the sea of blue scales and wings and tails. He was her baby, her darling dragon, her friend. She feared for his life. She feared for all of their lives, these beautiful beasts of water and magic.

She thought she saw him, duelling an orderite and a Khehora, and dove in to assist him. She wasn't going to hurt the magescans... just drive them off, like she always did. She realized, though, that it wasn't her dragon - the horns were wrong, and she caught a brief glimpse of her dragon tearing into a magescan just before the other dragon died - but as it dissolved into dust and a glowing blue orb, she felt her heart break all the same.

She screamed and dove at the Khehora, claws bared. What was a khehora doing among all these magescans? Why would he help them?

He was Aiskala and familiar, but she couldn't place why. The screams - magescan and dragon both - had begun and it was driving her to madness.

She only hoped to chase him off, to threaten him. But as another orb splashed into the water nearby, she just wanted it to end. It had only just begun.

DraconicFeline

An orb plinked into the water right next to Mae, and just beyond that, past the battling dragons and raging magic, something white and feathery dove for him. Or at least, it dove in his direction. Darke's talons dug into the face of another dragon, even as Mae stood still on the roots. His gaze traveled along the path of the white-feathered Khehora. Perhaps he'd seen her once. But her scream pierced through all the others, and the Orderite was only aware that she was going to hit Darke. And if he was hit, down into the water he'd fall. And if he hit the water, the Peisio would drown him.

There was nothing Darke could do to stop him as Mae moved into the Aedaun's path with a growl. Whether she really meant to harm the Aiskala or not, Maeron didn't know, but he dove in front of her before she could reach him. He didn't know if he succeeded in stalling her. All he knew was his feet slipped from the vines as the wind from her assault shoved him backwards. He fanned his wings to stop himself from toppling over, but a tendril of water snapped out to catch around his ankle. Mae had a brief moment to cast his gaze around to see which dragon had caught him before he was yanked down with a yelp, splashing loudly into the water.

'Mae!' Darke kicked away from the Peisio he clawed at, beating his wings to soar higher above the fray and drawing himself away from the Aedaun as well. He felt a twinge of unrestrained fear in the bond. While he was flapping overhead, Mae was in the lake, struggling against an unseen and intangible force; magic. And his only hope was for Darke to find the perpetrator in the next few seconds. Find and finish.

Suluksati backstroked her wings, soaring up and away from Maeron in a gust of wing-swept wind, the all-too-close ness of her feathered body, and another shriek to make the pair think twice about going up against dragons.

She saw the magescan fall into the water, but was soon too high to think about much more about it, following the other light, feathered, shape among the dragons. His bonded, she assumed.

She didn't entirely realize why he was doing what he was doing - if she had, she might have been more sympathetic - but - as she blocked an arrow from its dragonic mark with a brief, flickering shield of light - she knew she had to stop him. She roared, sending a beam of shimmering, holy light over his wing - an intentional miss, a warning shot that refracted against the water magic in a dazzling rainbow-and-blood display.

She would not just allow him to murder her dragons.

She banked, flying around to face the lines of guardians before blasting a beam of light at them as well, less a warning shot and more of a more dire form of warning. It was not her strongest shot, but it was not intended to miss.

It shimmered briefly on their armor before exploding into a nimbus of magical light. She heard screams, but whether they were caused by her or not, she didn't know. She had no time to know, not as she banked around to catch up to the Aiskala.

A ray of light burst across the top of his wing, and Darke was forced to sail to the side, dipping around and letting the tip of his right wing graze across the water as he turned his head back to glower at his attacker. Light magic. That either meant an Orderite, a Hybrid, or.. an Aedaun. An Aedaun dragon amidst these Peisios? No wait. The Khehora Mae had seen. The Khehora Mae had seen just before he fell. The traces of the thoughts that flicked through the Alihora's mind were fuzzy, but he was sure of it nonetheless.

He'd been forced from his path, so she had banked away. Now he needed to relocate that blasted Peisio, and he simply didn't have time. Around him other dragons and two-leggers were being forced down with magic, but there was no way of knowing if any of them were the dragon. No way except the traces of thought Mae had left him. And his chest was already burning with the need to breathe, despite how he sucked in lungfuls of air.

He circled back to where his boy had fallen in. Mae could be anywhere in those depths, drowning and waiting for Darke to find and kill that dragon. But it was too late for that. If he was going to save his boy, he'd have to refocus his attention to out of the battle. Inhaling a last, hopeful gulp of air, the Aiskala dove, piercing through the water like a knife through butter.

Perhaps he'd been discreet about it, so the dragons ignored him. Maybe they didn't think he was a threat so long as he was within their element. Either way, he hardly felt so much as a brush of magic. And when he did, a bolt of his own power to freeze the ebb of water around him was enough to quiet it so that he could continue on through the murky liquid, searching out his drowning boy amidst the commotion that raged even down here.

Suluksati lost her target as he careened into the water, lost among the splashing bodies and writhing blue shapes that made up the combat.

She flapped once, swishing her tail to the side and changing course. She skimmed across the churning, roiling water, before ascending back into the fray, following the sight of a dragon with familiar markings. She blocked an arrow from striking it with a shimmering shield, flying up alongside the dragon to see that it, indeed, was her hatchling. Her friend. Her baby.

She rumbled a brief relief to see the dragon alive, still, despite the screams of the fallen and the dragon souls that glittered in the murky water.

Only a brief relief, though, as she broke through a cloud of steam to see her dragon fighting...

Another dragon?!

No. This dragon smelled of Dovaa and perfume, and it bore a chain necklace with the insignia of whatever group the magescans below belonged to. It was a Dovaa in their true form, something that Suluksati had only heard of. She had never seen it before.

As the massive Dovaa was distracted with its prey, Suluksati decided to judge it for killing its own kin. She sent a beam of light at it, following in her magic's blinding wake to sink her claws into the flesh of its wing. She raked at it's sensitive membranes, and heard the dovaa roar with pain.

It snapped at her, and she disengaged and was away before its huge jaws closed. With a brief backwinging hover, she slashed the dovaa's face.
It roared, sending a gout of fire at her, which she blocked with a magicshield as, taking advantage of the distraction, the Peisio dragon - her Peisio dragon - sunk its teeth into the Dovaa's neck.

They screamed and fell, the water rising to meet them, struggling as it pulled them under. Suluksati could see the water boil, bloody, as it struggled. She banked, circling back around.

"I did not require thy assistance, servant." growled 'her' dragon, glaring at her with its deep blue eyes, "That was my kill."

Suluksati looked at him, then back at the water which had calmed, the dovaa's mighty struggles having ceased. "It is still yours, my dear." she murmured, feeling cold, "Still yours."

She flew away before the dragon could reply, and assessed the situation on the wing.

It was still not good for the dragons - despite the magescan's losses, peisio dragons were falling all over the beach, and the lake was covered with a swirling sludge of their blood and ashes. She glided, watching mournfully as another dragon fell. It was too much.

It was still too much.

A claw raked into her side, and she whirled around, shimmering with healing magic, to face a dragon. "I am not your enemy!" she cried, dodging as the dragon snapped at her, "I am here to protect you!"

Sometimes, when she said that, the dragons laughed in her face. This one, though, was clearly not in a laughing mood. It attacked her again, a spout of water reaching for her from the lake below and encircling her body. She struggled against its pull as it dragged her down and, with a rush of barbaric, savage, instinct, she blasted the dragon with a beam of light.

The water around her dissipated as it fell away and she rose again, watching as the dragon disintegrated into ash and it's soul orb fell into the murk of the water, glowing until it was no longer visible.

She shook the water off of her feathers and returned to her duties, her heart feeling raw and terribly, terribly pained.

It was just too much to bear.

The water tugged at him, drawing him down into the darkest depths. At first, he'd fought. It had seemed like a good idea. It was the only thing Mae knew how to do. But his physical struggles meant next to nothing against the magic that dragged at him. The fight made him weaker. It stole his breath quicker than it should have. Dragons must enjoy torturing two-leggers when they had the chance. He could've been dead already in these waters, but they wanted him to suffer. His chest burned with lack of breath and his muscles ached after the fight, and still, down he went.

Darke would never find him in this blackness.

As pain started to ebb into nothing, he felt a haze cloud his mind. The haze settled over the Bond and blocked out even his companion's desperate searching. They were done. Because of him, they were both done.

'No,' Darke hissed, as he felt the dregs of his partner's desperate thoughts skate across his mind. His senses were useless. He couldn't see, couldn't smell, felt nothing but cold water seeping into his feathers, even the sounds were completely overtaken by shouts of what was happening above. All he had was the Bond, and if Mae gave up on that, he'd have nothing. Darke clawed at those familiar threads, drawing them into his mind and following them through the water, dredging after the last dieing thoughts until his nose bumped something soft and familiar.

Water magic whipped at him, shoving him away from the captive Magescian. Any longer, and he would die. With a roar that pierced through the water, Darke summoned his magic, forcing the water into a crystal vortex and then shoving it away, creating a shimmering narrow crevice in the lake that pierced upward, spearing any in its wake. With a growl, Darke latched onto Mae's shoulder with his teeth and kicked up with all his might.

Suluksati noticed, out of the corner of her amber eyes, ice form in the water, though it was late spring and far too warm. Magic. That was nothing special.

Even when a glance that told her that the feathered alikhora from before had surfaced with a magescan, she dismissed it. That was not the problem, nor was it her focus.

The battle was underway and, like the tide, she knew she could do nothing to stop it. All her abilities, all the things she could try were as drops in a vast ocean.

But still she would try anyway. Futility had been the theme of her life thus far, and it did not shame her any more. She flew under the lines of the dragons, though above their watery influence, firing brief bursts of light at the magescans who fought them. She darted in and around the Guardian's ranks, harassing them before flying away - there were too many, she knew, for an honorable fair fight.

She wheeled back, passing close over, briefly and without really realizing it, where the alikhora and his boy had surfaced...

Darke clawed his way up the icy crevice, digging his nails in and hauling himself (and his boy) up toward the surface. He could already hear Mae bitching at him for being so rough with his teeth while dragging him along. But whatever! A few puncture wounds were better than being dead! With a last grunt of effort, he pulled his two-legger up onto his crystallized platform. He gaze the boy's neck a nuzzle and huffed out on him. Darke was still here, so that had to mean Mae wasn't dead either... That was good. But being unconscious in the middle of a dragon battle was not.

Darke scooped up a teeth-ful of Mae's white cape and started tugging him across the lake, making a little icy path with every step he took. In just a few footfalls, he was galloping toward shore, with his boy sliding unhindered along beside him. That Ysali woman was still on the shore... She seemed capable. Darke could just dump Mae with her... And then go after that pale feathered witch that had done this.

He didn't take time to explain as he arrived before the Ysali. He didn't need to. They simply exchanged a nod of understanding, and then Mae was in the woman's care, and Darke was pumping his wings in the direction of a pale blur streaking between the dragons.
