Wrathful Demigod

PostPosted: Sun Aug 18, 2013 5:51 pm

A hand, thin and shaking, slide under the fall of her curls to rest at the nape of her neck, and for one brief fleeting second she thought it was the man from the memories. But that was a fool's hope. That man wasn't here, had never been here. She wasn't sure where the knowledge came from, but she knew she had not seen him for some time, and that she likely never would again.

Coyote waited to feel shock, surprise, anger, or relief at Amity's offered touch, but nothing came. She just felt hallow, and when she turned and looked up at him over her shoulder that reflected in those wide, pale eyes. There was no spark, no eagerness or curiosity. Not even bitterness.

Her own small hand came up, dainty fingers curling loosely along his. Accepting that comforting gesture and holding onto it as long as he maintained it. But she knew, he'd spent the whole of their existence in this placing teaching her, that it wouldn't linger. That he wouldn't linger. He would leave, like he always had, without a goodbye, without so much as a second glance, because no matter what memories she carried of him, hadn't been given the same.

She was a step up from the rest of them, something familiar, that he could return to at his convenience. More then simply a face int eh crowd, but not by much.

And he.. He was the nagging memory of comforting arms and the murmur of a soft, rough voice. The scent of cigarette smoke, the taste of grilled cheese and tomato soup, and the amusing flicker of a wobbling little tower of bricks and sloppy star scribbled on the back of a thin, shaking hand..

Rojand watched Reap go to Iron, smiling a little; it felt nice to see them together, right in a way that he hadn't identified before. It was good. Then he turned and scanned the scattered crowd. There.

He stopped a short distance from where Amity stood with a girl - Coyote, he thought her name was. "You were right," he said without preamble. "Hurting is important." It had shaped him, made him what he was, and ultimately, that was why it was what he had to offer as a Sacrifice.

Her smile faltered when he admitted that he didn't know what love was. But his description, it saved her from despair. She felt the same urges he did, every time she was near him. That was why they were double friends. That was why she wouldn't let go of his hand until the end. Unless..

She knew she was incomplete. Fayre wasn't a fool - she could tell the difference between him, and her.. he would be complete, one day. She had barely scratched the surface; she was a phantom, a shadow following in his footsteps, hoping for one more moment to feel as real as he did. One kiss, one hug, one more fight at his side. She could make believe, then. She could make believe she was real, too.

She wrapped her arms around his neck as the decision came to her. "Then I love you. Or I could have. If I had been enough. I think I know what I want, now, but I don't know if I can have it." She rested her head on his shoulder. "Can I just stay here, Tiletk? There isn't much of me. I could just.. be a part of you. And then you would be more, you would be whole again. And you could move on."

It felt nice to lie there, and imagine herself melting away into him. She was sure if she just kept trying, she would certainly fade away.

The shrine called for her, so she came with her tail wagging. Lectoa’s ears perked up when she managed to count three statues. They had returned at last! “Hmmm…” She hummed when she felt the fog move.

A call. A call that came knocking from inside her rather than outside her. She held out a clawed hand to reach toward the fog, but there was nothing. Funny how she had once been part of the melting pot of memories and sounds, but now she heard only silence. She didn’t think much when she headed for the door and walked through it. Offer to us your Heart. She didn’t know why someone needed her heart. A twinge of pain as she recalled the memory of it being torn out.

Eyes glowed as she found herself in a nearly identical room, but the statues have changed now. Shifted. Sacrifice yourself for us. Her tail moved back and forth slowly. Sacrifice herself? Lectoa didn’t particularly mind, but this felt like a rather important decision.

She watched other figures filter into the room. Lectoa breathed. Oh, these figures were like her. She had made new memories and shared old ones with them. She had taken from them and they had taken from her. She wasn’t a blank slate filled with burning red. When she looked down she could see the specks of gold and white and purple and green. The corner of her lips twitch as she remembered. Memories. Scenes she had seen. Memories that felt like hers, but also not. Things were clashing together and she couldn’t tell which was the right one and which wasn’t.

And everything turned red. She tried to cover her eyes, but all she saw was the bright red sky and moon. The moon reached for her—

Shivers ran down her spine as she listened to a new voice, one that was rough and filled with malice.

Yet she stepped forward anyways. She breathed a sigh of relief as red is overtaken by green and gold. Now everything is filled with equal amounts of the three colors. Her mind was clear. She could remember memories. She could even remember that Lectoa was not her name. Not her true name at least. She stared at her choices before settling on warm gold.

He let her touch his hand, because he didn't figure it mattered much now.

And when Rojand showed up, he just looked at him with a stare that didn't understand.

"No," he said. "Hurting was important." Done now. Out of the way. Bundle it up and trade it for silencing the horrible hungry questions.

His eyes slipped from Rojand to the back of Coyote's head, and he gave her fingers a squeeze and then, just like she'd expected, her left her, left both of them, because he had things to do and sacrifices to make.

He draped her arms about her waist; it was easy and automatic to be this close to her. He quietly just held onto her and listened. Each word she spoke didn't thankfully crush his heart or his world - there was an odd sense of understanding because he had gone through what she had as well. He knew how it felt to be blank. An empty slate with seemingly nothing written upon it.

"You love me in your own way," he said simply and confidently. If she hadn't loved him then she wouldn't be here - he was convinced of this. "No. We both go. We both go and we make a decision. Maybe this is what'll help you. I ... I am not sure I can do it on my own if you aren't by my side anyways."

It was easier to sacrifice if you went hand-in-hand. It was easier for him. "We go together. I am your light in the fog just like you are mine."

Rojand nodded a little to himself, not taking offense, and gave Coyote a small smile before he turned and padded back over to where Reap and Ironshare stood together. He hesitated only a moment before moving to put his arms lightly around both of them.

He was right. Why was he always right? Why did she suddenly feel so frustrated about how wrong she was and how right he would always be?

Fayre leaned in and bit his bicep.

"Fine." She growled out. In truth, his words had injected a frightening hope inside of her. If this was the step in their journey that would give her a chance, then perhaps it wasn't time to say goodbye, after all.

She turned in his arms, but kept them wrapped around her tight. The sensation of his embrace caging around her made her feel warm and safe, like coming home. She reveled in it, soaking him in and using his positive energy to make believe she was whole again, just like she always did around him. It was so easy to make believe...

"Then forward!" She screeched out, pointing towards the doors. "Let's go find out what lies in store!"

Iron heard his name (not his real name).

He didn't have to choose.

Not now. Not just yet.

He drew away from the demands. He'd wanted to be somewhere. The Ruins. That was where they started, where they always met back. He was still clutching his chest. He had a name.

"Yeah," he said softly, turning at the pressure, and wrapping his arms around Reap's back, pressing their hearts close a final time. "We'll stand. It's been you, hasn't it? We're-" The emotions and memories all jumbled up together.

"Where's-?" He looked over Reap's shoulder, for Rojand, and he knew, he remembered, the important parts and pieces. He took Reap's hand again, and this time instead of dragging him under the shelter of a building, he took them both to Rojand's arms, and his heart was so full, and it fluttered and spun next to Rojand's and Reap's.

"They gave us hearts," he says, "and they want them back. It was theirs in the first place. All these...colors, and add-ons." He rested his forehead in Rojand's collar, and his hand moved to Reap's hair, to pull his head close.

"The memories, that's not from them. Those are ours."

The urge to break down was terrifying, but the swirling memories that accosted her were absolutely overwhelming. They seemed to come from every angle, seeping into her until Shasa felt so bogged down, so cluttered, that it truly was difficult to see.

A name, right there, so close that she could taste it. It's sweet, it's sour, it's bitter, and it's lost. A frustration became lodged deep in Shasa's chest, and her fingers turned to claws as she clutched her hands over her chest.

How much could she take?

Shasa squeezed her eyes shut, a harsh rasping gasp ripped from her throat and it was there, it was there, it was there --

-- and the floor began to shake, and a hot crimson burned through her eyelids and then --

A voice, filled with such thick and brittle malice, a feeling so familiar and right.

Shasa stepped forward, not really knowing why, only knowing that she had no other options but to obey. She faltered once, when the sky split into glimmering filigree gold and rich, opulant emerald green. Shasa watched them thrash against one another, rolling and ripping and roiling, and for an instant Shasa's thoughts were once more consumed by her name - just out of reach.

Once more, she was faced with a choice that she did not feel ready to make. That rich, beautiful crimson called to her, just as that glittering gold did.

It was a heavy burden to bear, this choice, but it was hers to make - she just didn't feel quite ready to decide. Shasa would wait for him, just for a little while, just a little while.

She bit him and he didn't object. Something about the act was endearing and even reminiscent of something he couldn't quite recall - it was the first time she'd ever done this to him, this he was sure of. The word she growled out only set him to laughing with light amusement as he leaned and kissed the back of her neck, light and gentle. A gesture of one last affection before they moved onward.

"Yes," he grinned more wildly now, "this is our next adventure."

It was easier to think of it as an adventure and not a sacrifice. It was easier to move forward when he didn't have to ponder on the acts ahead. Thus Tiletk moved forward with Fayre, letting the urgency finally over take him as they approached the door together.

His hand went up to his core, the one thing he wanted to give to Fayre alone but now he had to sacrifice it to make himself better for Fayre. How an act that could end him would make him better was far behind him. Only the powers greater than him would know.

Together they would go through the door and to their next adventure.

Reap nodded against him, inhaling deeply, regardless if there were scents or not in this world, it was close and familiar. "Aye." He said calmly. Yes to all the unspoken things, all the things he knew were there and that had to be true given the memories, however fleeting.

He needed the hug more than he knew how to articulate, exhausted mentally and simply needing that point of reassurance and stability. And he agreed with Iron in that too, ultimately their memories were their own. "And they'll persist because of that." he murmured, leaning against them both.

And doubt surfaced. "Where will you go?" he said, holding back the spike of worry that gripped him as he cast his gaze once more towards red, to where he knew the power lay for those daring enough to take it. "Because I feel like I know where I should."

When she felt the tug, she obediently followed it to the shrine, somehow knowing that this was it--that this was the final bend. To what? She had no idea, but Vae had no doubt that it was pointless to question it, since she was probably going to find out very soon.

She passed by the three familiar goddess statues, gaze briefly flitting over their plaques before she pressed on, following after the fog that beckoned her forward. Upon reaching the door, she observed it warily for a moment before reading the inscribed sentence, a small, short laugh escaping her lips.

Offer them her heart? Well, this was obviously going to go well.

Regardless, even if she wanted to, she couldn't turn back now. Pushing onwards, Vae paused when she realized that this room was nearly a replica of the last, albeit with some minor differences. Approaching the statues, she carefully read each plaque as she walked past, but by the second one, she had a pretty good idea already of what was being asked for. So that was why they had been brought--or created?--here, hmm? Sacrifices.

The thought made her a little bitter, but before she could dwell on it, she suddenly noticed a figure from the corner of her eye. Then another, and another, and--their heart. Why was it that it felt like all of their hearts--hers included--were synchronized, beating at the same time? And they were all familiar too. They were all familiar, all the same as...hers.

When she looked down, she realized that her heart had changed colors. No longer was it a bright yellow, but it covered a whole spectrum now, a wave of different emotions pulsing over her with each change. She could remember. She could remember everything that had happened thus far, and everything that she had previously recalled about her life. The tasks, her friend Reine, and then....there was something else that was nagging at her. A name, one that nearly left her lips but suddenly got caught in the process. Just what was it...?

The rumbling ground quickly made it evident that there were more pressing matters to attend to right now. As she turned her head up to look at the sky, she felt her heart stop at the sight of the large red moon that had appeared overhead. So this is it, huh? She mused as she felt herself grow weak, the presence taking hold of her. This is where it all ends. I'll be used as a sacrifice, and then my existence will be forgotten.

What a sad fate.

She almost gave in when Gold and Green suddenly intervened, effectively snapping the girl out of her stupor. Shaking her head in an attempt to clear it, she eyed the three forces that were battling it out now, knowing that she would have to lend her assistance to one of them. The question was, which one?

There was a long moment of silence, and then she turned to face Pride, her surroundings suddenly warping. Moving up to the crown, she took a deep breath and reached into her own chest.

Fayre stepped through the door, her hand still tightly gripping Tiletk's, until her eyes fell on the goddesses. There was something about simply looking into each of their eyes, those same eyes that had taken away memories - and the same that let her re-live them, if only for a moment.

She dropped Tiletk's hand.

Fayre's dim blue glow turned even dimmer, as she curled in upon herself. She couldn't remember Tiletk's face in any of them. The only faces she remembered now were the men who'd hurt her. The men she'd hurt. The faces of pain. Her pain. Her scissors.

She tried to push them all away. She wanted none of them. Not one. She couldn't breathe-

"Tiletk." She whispered. "It has to be quick."

Whatever they were here to do, they had to do it now. She wanted an end; she wanted the bliss of ignorance back.

She fell upon the gold pedestal, her legs shaking until they could no longer hold her. She put her hand against her chest, and her fingernails dug into the black, ichor oozing with each careful push, until all of it was in her hands. All of that faint, glowing blue.

The relief was immediate.

Her hands gave up her heart so quickly, that when she turned to whisper a final goodbye to the man who'd brought her here, it was already too late. Something in her eyes, as they faded away, tried to tell him how she felt. But there was little too nothing left of her to express, anymore.
