Habits:

Falling down: Poor Matty is extremely clumsy and is constantly stumbling over anything that is (or isn’t) in his way.

Dropping things: In class, the boy is constantly dropping his quill; the professors are always scared for him during potions because of it.

Forgetting things: If he’s not dropping something, he’s forgetting where he puts things. His wand will go missing and turn up behind his ear; his homework will go missing and turn up in the text book he had been using.

Hobbies:

Making movies: Matty has a wide collection of superhero action figures back at home. When he is there, he loves to get a hold of his father’s video camera and record his own stop motion videos.

Video games: Another hobby Matty loves to indulge in while he is at home is video games. His favorite genre is roleplaying video games.

Reading: When it’s time for him to come to Hogwarts, he always makes sure to pack his latest issues of his favorite superhero comics in his trunk. He's very thankful that his dad will use the owl system to send him the newest issues while he is there.

PERSONALITY

Ever since he learned how to walk, Matthew (Matty for short) has always been clumsy, accidentally knocking himself in the head with his toy blocks many, many times. Once he did start walking, he would forget to pay attention to where he was going and end up bumping into any and everything. His mother learned quickly to keep a well-stocked supply of antibiotic ointment and plaster strips.

His forgetfulness doesn’t just lead to him being nearly covered in plaster strips; it also leads to him missing things. Anything of his that could go missing, from his shoes to his toys, will go missing because he will forget where he sat it down or to put it back in the place it belongs. When he entered primary school, many times his teachers would scold him for leaving his homework at home. His mom tried to help him out by making sure to check his backpack every morning when he left. Now that he is going to Hogwarts, she has to incessantly check his trunk and whatever other bags he takes to make sure he has everything he needs.

Most of Matty’s clumsiness and forgetfulness comes from him having his mind off in his own little worlds. He has always enjoyed a good story and is constantly delving into fantasy worlds either of his own making or that he is familiar with because of books, cartoons, or video games. He’s constantly working on scripts for his next stop motion video he wants to make when he gets back home. His journeys into his worlds, however, hinder him in class because his mind is constantly going and wanders off from the topic of the lecture.

His flights of fantasy, as well as having a slightly sheltered life, lead to him being extremely gullible. He is likely to believe what anyone tells him as truth; he doesn’t think anyone would lie to him and likes to believe the best in people. Because of this, he could easily be manipulated by anyone seeking to mislead him or tricked into doing something he doesn’t want to do.

Because of these traits, Matty looks to fictional superheroes or others in real life that he thinks of as superheroes, such as firemen, police, or doctors. He sees their bravery and wishes he could be strong like them and able to battle against evil, or just the evilness of a new scrape on his knee or being made fun of when he falls.

FAMILY

Mother: Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Mason is a muggle who worked as a teacher’s aide until Matty was born. After he was born, she dedicated herself to being a stay at home mom. With him now off to Hogwarts for school, she is working on trying to get back into teaching, this time as a primary school teacher.

Father: William Mason is a mixed blood though he failed to inform his wife of this before he married her. Like his son, he was also sorted into the house of Gryfindor. However, unlike most of the others in his family, he chose to embrace the muggle side of his family and even took a job in the muggle world as a police man. His job leads him to being out of the house on duty more often than not. He is similar to his son when it comes to his forgetful ways and clumsiness. His wife is convinced the younger Mason boy inherited that trait from him.

Siblings: Matty has a little sister that has not yet shown any signs of being magical.

Extended Family: Matty has a grandmother on his father’s side that he sees once a year and an uncle on his mother’s side that occasionally comes to live with his parents.

Relationship with Family: Matty is very much a momma’s boy because of how much time he spent with her, though the second Dad finally comes home from work, Matty is right there with him and is glued to his side until it is time for his dad to return to work. He was upset when he had to leave them behind to come to Hogwarts, but after much insisting that it would be best for him, he went and his dad promised him that he would teach his mother how to write to him as soon as he could.

General History:

Matthew James Mason was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Upon his birth, his mother decided to be a stay at home mother while his father continued his work as a police officer. Most of Matty’s time growing up, then, had been spent with his mother. Instead of sitting him in front of the television, she would keep him with her throughout the day and occasionally work on projects with him. Many times his dad would come home to find a new finger painting or macaroni sculpture that had been made. Once his inherited clumsiness started to become more apparent, she made sure he was always near her so she could see when something happened to him.

However, once Matty was old enough to enter primary school, his father insisted that he be enrolled, instead of home-schooled as his mother wanted him to be. Matty hated it his first day but made a friend or two that made the experience better. However, his shyness and clumsiness made Matty the perfect target for bullies. Then not only would he be sent to the nurse because of his typical bumps and scrapes, but because of trying to protect himself against the bullies. Many times his parents would be called in for parent-teacher conferences or meetings with the principal to try to get the other kids to stop treating Matty the way they did or to get him transferred to a new class.

His first experience with magic happened during school one day. He was focusing intently on a math quiz, trying to remember how to do long division, when the spare eraser on his desk started floating around his hand and erasing his mistakes on its own. Luckily when the teacher called his name, the eraser dropped back to the desk and left the teacher bewildered. His next experience with magic thankfully happened at home; his parents had just finished letting him open his birthday presents (brand new action figures) and he was in their living room with the video camera, working on making one of his small movies. His dad left him alone in the room for just a couple minutes to retrieve a drink; Jessica came into running into the kitchen a few minutes later and drug him back in the room. When he arrived back in the living room, he found Matty’s new action figures were moving around on their own as the boy recorded them.

As soon as he noticed, he sighed and called his wife to come into another room, away from the two children. He left Matty alone to continue making his video while he explained the situation to his wife. As he was speaking to Beth concerning what was going on with their son, a letter came flying through the mail slot. Curious, Matty sat down the camera and the action figures finally went back to being stationary when his attention was off of them. He picked up the letter and noticed it was addressed to him from some place called Hogwarts. Unaware of what he had in his hands, he went to take the letter to his parents. When his father seen what he held in his hands, he gave another sigh and had Matty come sit by him. He spent the next hour explaining to him about his grandfather and those that had come before him in the family that had also gone to the school as well as what it meant for Matty to be invited. He made sure to also explain to him, that if Matty didn't want to go, he didn't have to; he didn't have to embrace the magical side of his lineage if he didn't want to.

He let Matty have a couple of days to think while he tried to console Matty's mother. Eventually Matty decided that he would try the new school (it was kind of cool to him that he was a wizard and could learn to do magic). Though Beth didn't like the idea of her son going off to some strange school (even if her husband and others in his family had been there), when it came time for Matty to board the train, she was right there waving him off, with tears in her eyes.

The Sorting:

Matty watched with rapt attention as the sorting hat was placed on the other boy’s and girl’s heads. He was amazed at the way the hat could talk and apparently knew where each kid belonged. As the line in front of him started to get shorter, he wondered where he would go. He tried to remember the names his father had told him. He didn’t think he was fit to be a Ravenclaw and he didn’t know what a Hufflepuff was; he desperately hoped the hat didn’t think he belonged to the snakes. What was the other name ? Gryfin something…..The hat called out “Gryfindor!” as it sorted another kid and it was almost like a light bulb went off in Matty’s head. Gryfindor! That’s what it was!

He remembered what a griffin was after reading about one in a book with his dad. As he walked up to the stool, his thoughts managed to stay focused on griffins and if he had anything in common with them. They were supposed to be big, he remembered as the hat was placed on his head, and they were brave when going into battle. As that thought crossed his mind, Matty started to feel slightly disheartened; he wouldn’t make a good griffin.
From the top of his head, he heard the hat hum, “So it is bravery you seek? Bravery cannot be given but it can be learned, you see. Gryfindor!!!!”

Matty blushed as a grin spread across his face as he made his way, hoping his wouldn’t trip, to the table where his new classmates were cheering.

Extra Info:

Boggart: Matty’s boggart would be a clown; he has hated and been scared of them for as long as he can remember. His first trip to the circus didn’t help matters.

Mirror of Erised: He would see himself standing tall, not a bandage in sight, smiling with straight teeth, next to his dad in a Batman costume with himself in a Robin costume.

Patronus: Matty’s patronus would be a bat because of the time he got to meet someone dressed as Batman at the local comic book store near his parents’ house.

Greatest Treasure: His comic books. His dad started collecting and reading them to him at an early age and now helps him collect all the issues involving his favorite characters.

Manner of Dress: Matty typically starts the day off with his robes or regular clothes being well put together but by the end of the day, they end up a rumpled mess.

Favorite Class: Mythological Creatures because he is familiar with many of the stories that go with the creatures.

Worst Class: Potions because he’s constantly mixing up ingredients and accidentally causing whatever he has in his cauldron to explode.
