★ ★ ★"Silent Night"『 perspective: varete 』 word count: 568
"Haha, next time guys.. next time!"
Invited by friends to a Christmas Eve Party, Varete's refusal was met with unhappy protests. Persisting in their efforts, "Aw, c'mon. it'll be fun!" A few struggled to persuade her but she remained adamant in her in refusal. Eventually, they came to realize the futility of their efforts and began to stop. "Next time, have fun at home then." Her friends murmured with resigned sighs, as they began to depart.
"Yeah, thanks." Varete said, waving goodbye to the crowd. A few minutes later, she gently closed the door behind her with a relieved sigh. Despite her friends and their protests to party, she simply wanted to spend a quiet evening at home.
After all, it was Christmas Eve– she had no desire to celebrate this "joyous"holiday.
She collapsed onto her couch with a sigh. Arms crossed over her eyes, shoulders tense, legs sloppily drawn over the arm-rest– she gazed wearily at the table. There was a forlorn silence about her, as if she was uncertain what to do. On the table was a unopened envelope.
To: Varete Valentine. From: Viede She had received the envelope today, had recognized the handwriting, and debating with herself when to open it. "Mother..." She hesitantly reached for it, but then drew back her hand. She wanted to throw it in the trashcan— Yet at the same time, she wanted to open it and read what the letter said.
Her memories began to flash back to happier times, back to the years when had been a child.
"If you wish for something long enough, it will definitely come true.” With a wide grin, "Look mommy! Santa gave me this tiara, just like I asked him!" shouted Varete as she ran over to the mommy. Viede had caught her in her arms, "Is that so?" She laughed, her laugh a warm and gentle sound that always brought a smile to Varete's face. Eagerly waving her wand in the air, "Look, look!" She squealed, "I'm a princess!" And her mother had agreed and cuddled the blond princess closer to her body. Wrapping her arms around her neck, Varete buried her face in her mother's coat.
With Viede's face hidden from her daughter's sight.. her smile had begun to dim, "Oh, Varete." She whispered.
At that time, Varete had been oblivious to her mother's distress. She noticed it before she was too late– The next Christmas, her mother was gone. No matter how many nights she had spent spent with Vivi her bear at the windowsill wishing and crying, her mother had never come back.
Fourteen years later, she stood up tall and strong.. The harsh reality had hit her, and she had grown up cynical of love and all that it had stood for.
Yet, there was the child that yearned for her mother’s love. Hope. Hope that she would still care. To care enough to come back for her. She stiffened at the sudden thought, and quickly shook it away. She had thought that she rid herself of all naiveté..
She had stared at the envelope long enough now. It doesn't matter. Quickly open it up and have it done with.. she would not be disappointed again by her mother.
Despite her rigid resolution, her trembling fingers betrayed her emotions as she ripped the envelope open.
Dear Varete,
You'll always be my little princess.. Merry Christmas.
Love, Viede
Her emotions threatening to overwhelm her, Varete ripped the card apart. "How dare she?" She angrily cried, as the card fell to the ground in a shredded mess.
