I think that I must agree with both of you. I agree with Kitana in respects to what metal is. Nu-metal, as she pointed out, is not metal. I do however think that what fearsKLOWNs is trying to say is that there is a slight 'hate nu-metal' vibe in this guild. I myself like much music that is not metal, including many nu-metal bands such as Slipknot. I do not think music should be considered substandard just because it is not metal. That said, this is a metal guild which is why nu-metal is not allowed.

But see, again. Whether these bands fall under the Metal category or not is a personal opinion. & in my opinion, as well as many other peoples' opinions, false. Personally, I think that if we have to have genres (I think genres as a whole are harmless, its when you get to knit-picking the sub-genres that things get dangerous. Its like trying to talk about politics or religion.) Nu-Metal shouldn't be one.

I just think that it unfair that we, the fans of these bands that you call "nu-metal", can't openly discuss bands we enjoy & think are metal in a supposed metal guild, because a certain number of people hold the opinion that they aren't metal... even though they sound alot like a few other bands that these same people do consider metal.

You make a good point. But In the beginning, You were making the "squabbel". Whether you were born yesterday or 50 years ago, different genres of music have been erupting. Whether you want to consider them official or not is your own choice. Also, that is not the only source I rely on. It is just an accurate one. Don't go complaining about how people keep barking genres out that aren't official...because you are using those same genres to categorize Slipknot. Also, I notice...you too have a hate for Nu-Metal. Not the music but the word. So, why isn't it alright if people in this metal guild get offended by someone listing a NOT-metal band as a metal band in their thread? If you are a Nu-Metal fan, post in the Nu-Metal thread. That is what it is for. Don't complain because everyone else doesn't want it littering their threads.

What you say makes a lot of sense, and I would love to talk about nu-metal bands in this guild, but I don’t see the powers at be letting it happen.

Right, because Nu-Metal is not metal. It is a mislabled genre by the media. :/

It's no opinion. Genres are not opinion, and they never have been.

damn you guys are really wrapped up in this idea of what bands are considered "metal" nowadays arent you? almost makes me scared of starting a band considering how emotional the first page of this thread is. It almost seems like suicide to have a band self-proclaim what genre of music they are considering how harsh you guys are being. anyway, my opinion, defining what metal is seems just impossiable nowadays, theres so many sub-genres and criticism of what it is that it just becomes this messy pile of blurry pointless arguementative crap. hardcore, nu-metal(its not metal despite having the word metal in there? at least according to you guys), screamo, neoclassical, death metal, black metal, power metal, glam metal, thrash metal, ect ect the list goes on. its like theres a metal for everything. yet for some reason very few self proclaimed "metal" bands seem to fit in any of these genres. i say ******** it, just enjoy the music for what it is, mosh if its heavy, headbang if its hard stop giving a rats a** about what genre a band is and just listen to it if you like it.

cute, someone from the internet whom i will never meet, telling me to go to hell, man i may just have to go cut myself and write a blog about it on myspace. listen buddy, im simply trying to make a point, one that you seem to fail at doing thus far. If we go by what kitana saito said assuming that nu-metal looks, sounds, tastes, feels, smells like metal then obviously, using simple logic here, this isnt rocket science man, it is what it is. its metal, its simply just another sub genre of metal. You may not consider it metal but go cry about it man. it is what it is, a simple sub genre of what we all listen to. geez guys.... it even has the fricken word metal in it?! god....

EDIT:

oh yeah...from the looks of it, it doesnt seem like you guys are defining metal any better then i am. >.> just a couple of a*****e kids who like to listen to hard music. thats all im seeing....

Woman, haha Nu-Salt is not salt. Obviously...you do not read a whole conversation before you comment on it. Since you chose not to...let me fill you in...Nu-Salt is for people who can't eat salt. It has all the same qualities of salt...except for the trait of being harmful to a persons' health. Please, read the conversation before you comment on it. Thanks 3nodding

It has the word metal in it because Nu means NOT and with a big NOT in front of the word METAL should be clear to all of you idiots that it means it is not metal! This is so that idiots like all of you will not confuse it with metal. IT STATES THAT IT ISN"T METAL IN THE FREAKING NAME! Jesus tap dancing christ people. How hard is that to understand? Why can't you except it?! It isn't like it changes what the music sounds like! If you like Nu-Metal..Cool...but don't talk about it in a METAL guild. Go to a Nu-Metal guild, or to a rock guild. Just quitcherbitchin and except it.

Ky, please refer to the Nu-Metal thread. I've made it crystal clear why Nu-Metal is not metal. I assure you I am not an "a*****e kid" making things up. This comes from facts passed on either by word of mouth and through forums and certain websites, because no other forms of media know their face from their a** when it comes to music. This should become apparent when one sees someone on T.V. comparing Slipknot to Black Sabbath. It has nothing to do with opinion. Genres are pure 100% fact which are determined by key characteristics depending on the sub-genre or genre. Many of the genres you listed are non existant. See the Metal Recomendation thread for a complete list of known genres and bands which fall under them. The key characteristics of Nu-Metal include, but are not limited to: Heavy repitition, hip-hop influence, and angst lyrics. Nu-Metal contains the word 'metal' simply because of the mass media and their throwing the word around. It was labled "Nu-Metal" because Nu means not in Latin. Hence the name Nu-Salt of the salt-substitute intended for those who cannot consume high levels of sodium. To back up Kitti's analogy, it is not salt, although it is simular because the chemical composition is different than that of actual salt. Hence, it is not salt, just as Nu-Metal is not metal. Do you see the Metaphor? If not, it is quite simple. Nu-Metal is Alternative Rock with heavy Metal influences such as heavy dissortion, harsh vocals, and dark themes. However, it is not metal because it lacks complexity in instrumentals. Contrary to popular belief, metal is not determined by how "herdcurr" a band is. It is determined almost completely by complexity in intrumentals which normally includes guitar solos. There is a huge difference between the two, as you now know. The Genre was named that because of so many getting it confused with actual metal. Genres exsist to keep music seperate and orderly. After all, you wouldn't want to turn on a rock station and hear country, would you?

I really hate having to explain it in detail all the time to people. v.v; This is why we have the Nu-Metal thread. In fact, I'm going to put this post in there. :3

But I hope this answers the questions of those who were confused about this.
