I had to put my beloved cat to sleep. She was nineteen years old, and dying from kidney failure.
We should have probably done it sooner. Her last days were quite stressfull... I was her nurse, and only left her side to go to the bathroom and get myself or her something to eat, and sleep was almost unheard of.
She tried to walk, but couldn't make it very far. I'd have to scoop her up and bring her back to her spot on my brother's bed. She kept eating, just not as much as before, mostly little bites of tuna from a can.
But one day, after she was done eating, she got down from the bed and began coughing, very loudly and harshly. It was awful, but I knew it was the end for her. We picked her up and put her in a little basket with her favorite blanket, took her to the vet, and ended her suffering.
Even now, eight years later, I'm sitting here and crying. I loved her more than anyone could guess. I had her with me ever since I was a baby. And suddenly, my beloved little fuzzball who'd survived feline lukemia, ear tumors and having most of her teeth pulled was gone.
I miss her dearly. I have her little picture next to my computer, and I hug it often. I'd like to believe that someday, we'll be together again.
It's a horrible thing, to feel as if you've killed your pet. My aunt felt the same way a few weeks ago, when she had to have her dog put to sleep. I think it's a necessary evil... something we hate to do, but when an animal is suffering, it's kinder than letting them be in pain.

well think about it. your choices are leave them in pain to die slowly or let them get a needle which is quick and painless. what would u prefer?

Euthanization is a very hard thing to deal with. My most recent was my 17 year old dog, Kerri. She was so weak she couldnt walk anymore and would urinate all over herself. She was blind and nearly deaf. She got to the point where her own will to live had diminished and she stopped eating.
We decided it was time and she needed our help. My mom kept her force fed until I could make it home from college and say my goodbyes and to keep her from suffering starvation. We thought the most humane thing we could do was put her to sleep.
It was incredibly hard but she would have suffered if we hadnt. I think that is the ultimate question.

I actually think that you can put animals down. What if the animal has a horrible sickness and is suffering? Would you really want it to live in that condition if it wasn't getting better? And what if your dog had a bad hip and couldn't really walk and its legs were hurting all the time? Would you really want to let it suffer?
I have had to put some of my animals down because of illness or cancer. Its hard but its the right thing to do sometimes.
My grandma's dog Defa was a German Sheperd and she meant soo much to our whole family. She was sweet, protective over us, and was very kind. She started to get a bad hip when she turned 8 years old and she couldn't walk well anymore. My grandma and grandpa didn't want to see her suffer anymore. It was very harsh and we cryed alot over Defa. But now she is in a better place. sad
Same with one of my cats we used to have. She was the sweetest cat ever. She loved to sleep in your lap and she was very tidy(no duh, she was a female 3nodding ) But 14 years later (since she was a kitten) she started to smell and green saliva came out of her mouth alot. She also couldn't eat well. We tried medication but she wasn't getting better. I was SO sad when we had to put her down.. I knew her basically my whole life. sad

It is a good idea if the animal is very sick or in constant pain or in a similar condition. Apart from that, I don't see any reason to do it.
The animal feels no pain when it is being euthanized, so don't worry about that 3nodding

Callowyn of Calypso It's otherwise known as "euthanising" (or however you spell that). What do you think, is it fair for the animal? My beautiful tabby cat Alexander The Great is getting up in the years now, and I am concerned, because the topic might come up soon. Is it fair to put animals to sleep? I believe it is fair. It truly is sad but there isn't much we can do. Last year..well in 2005 we had to put my dog down on christmas eve. We have never had to put any animals down before so it was a very hard. You see..he was part wolf so he was a big dog. We got to the point where his back legs wouldn't work and he would try running but failed to. He also had bladder and other problems. Anyone could tell he was suffering. When we brought him to the vet they were very good with it. They talked to him..allowed us to be there so we were the last thing he saw. They put something in him so he wouldnt' feel the pain...then they did it. It was sad but he never suffered. We were scared (because where we live..it is all forest) that some animal...coyote or cougar would pick him off. He is a big dog so it was probably painful for him to stay like he was. I miss him! cry

sorry if you guys are on a topic specific under it.. but I just don't feel like reading 4 pages lol
what do I think about it... well I think it should only be used in emergency sistuations, like to stop the animals pain if they can't help it... I was watching a show tonight called "animal cops" i think that's what it was called and they found 3 horses that were majorly neglected, all they were, were skin and bone and most of thier muscle mass had deterierated, 2 of them were savable but one had a very bad disease that if they tried to keep it alive it wouldn't make a difference the disease was too far into it's stages to save and has a high accurance of coming back so thet euthanized it to save it the pain of living in that state
it's only wrong when people do it because they just don't want or need an animal. But it is totally understandable if the animal is too old and too sick to make a recovery. humans have similar right? it's called resessitation (sp?) ... but it is just sad when an animal that is neglected either dies or has to be euthanised because the owner didn't do anything to help it when the disease kicked in
so there's my opinion on it.. only really sick ... or old animals that can't recover should be the only ones that should be euthanised

I think it is ONLY fair if the animal is in EXTREME pain, has NO chance of recovery, does not try to live in ANY way, and loses all desire to love. It should be treated the same way a human should be. I mean, we don't go around killing off cancer patients. Nobody can totally be cured of dying, because everybody dies! If all these criteria fit, then it is fair. But if an animal is in pain and still trying to live, you should let it live out the rest of its natural life, because it is the most respectful choice of the animal's interests. If the animal in question does not want to die, it is comparable to murder, much rather than assisted suicide. Who is to say but the animal whether or not it deserves to die?
