It's otherwise known as "euthanising" (or however you spell that). What do you think, is it fair for the animal? My beautiful tabby cat Alexander The Great is getting up in the years now, and I am concerned, because the topic might come up soon. Is it fair to put animals to sleep?

Yeah I think that it's fair if you are doing it for a good reason. The only reasons I see for doing it is if the animal is sick or severly injured or is old and suffering. There is no group of people I hate more than the ones who put animals to sleep because they don't want it anymore.

Ya know what really makes me sad? If you go to the animal shelter near my house, (I do just to help out and volunteer) The dog section is almost full of older dogs that their previous owners just didn't want. I (luckily) persuaded my neighbor to adopt a gorgeous 9 year old dalmatian that only had 3 legs, because she got hit by a car, and they had to amputate, and then her owner didn't want her because she didn't run as fast. That is just cruel and unforgivable. Love is supposed to be unconditional.

if the animal is really and pain and has no heart to live on then i can see how putting them tosleep would be right. but i hate it when people at animal shelters will rescue a "mean" dog and they dont even give him/her a chance...its sad.

Dogs aren't naturally mean...dogs only become agressive when they are abused or they have a tough puppyhood....there are some breeds that have bad reputations, but that doesn't mean that they are all hell hounds.

As a safety precaution, shelters have to put down pitbulls, and I believe it is a law.
Unfortunately, the statistics are against pitbulls, and violence runs in the breed, so they have to put all pitbulls down in order to protect children and owners.
But it does bother me that some people have taken animals to shelters because of your reason, Callo.
Although, to be honest, I've taken a total of 3 animals to the shelter before.
One was because the owners weren't taking very good care of it, and I didn't know anyone else who wanted to take it, and I couldn't keep it myself (I semi-lived with the owner), so I took it to the shelter in hopes she would find a better family. She was still a puppy, so I was sure she would be adopted.
The second one was one of my favorite dogs ever. I didn't really take her to the pound, my parents did, without me. The reason? She kept escaping from the backyard, no matter what we did, and we found her smelling awful. We also live near a busy intersection, so I guess the thinking was that she would be adopted into a family with a large yard. My parents couldn't keep up with her escaping. So they got rid of her. sad
The third was her brother. We took him to the pound because he was continually aggressive. We dont' know why. He was raised exactly as his sister was, and she was sweet, and he hated everyone else but us. He's lunged at a few people and when my brother moved out for a while and came back, the dog didn't even recognize him (even though it was his dog at one point) and lunged after him. My parents didn't want to be responsible if something did happen, and even then, they hated having to put him out back when company came over and then the company could never go out back. Three days after taking him to the shelter, the shelter called and said he tried to attack one of the employees so they were going to put him down. cry

Euthanasia >_< brings back horrible memories. I would only sleep my pets if they're very ill and are suffering. I've only had to euthanize once and I felt like a murderer. It was horrid. Also burrying my poor fellow, but it's better than seeing him suffer...

I agree with what has been said prior. If an animal is suffering and put to sleep, that's similar to assisted suicide for a human patient, and that is (sometimes) permissable, yano? It makes me pity the animals that are enthusized because shelters don't have enough room for them, though. It's a shame, but I can't blame the shelters, because they just lack the money to support all those creatures. When my family got goats, one of them had a birth defect. We purchased her anyway, because the owner didn't believe it would be life-threatening. We had to put her down, though, because it got so bad that she wasn't able to support herself on her legs. She would lay on her side and start to choke. It was truly depressing, I loved that goat. sad

I think it's fair. But only to put the animal out of it's misery if it's terribly hurt, can't get better, and there's no cure. My dog sadly just had to be put to sleep after suffering from like almost every disease... I was so upset.... I couldn't stop crying for a week and I still miss him... But it was only to put him out of his misery... because if he was still alive... he'd still be withering away... not being able to eat and eveything. I would've been hurting even more if I would have to see him suffer so much...

I've never euthenized a pet.. though I probably should have to my favoritest mouse ever. She had a tumor in her throat when she died. Also she had one of her eyes popped out, I dont know how though. All I know is I picked her up and my hands got all bloody.

Hmm.... I was just thinking that is it fair to put down animals just because they have shown aggresive behavior. Like if a human attacked someone, they wouldn't be put down if they only did a little damage, but an animal would. Is that fair?

An animal should only be put to sleep if it is in terrible pain, and has no chance of recovery.

I work at a Vet Clinic and I see animals get put down every week. I dont have a problem with doing it since its the most human way to end and animal who's suffering and cant be helped. One that that gets me mad is when the animal can be saved, but the owner dosent want to spend the money on the treatment.
