I love fantasy writing! My current story is fantasy.

You know, I was a fan of Twilight, but then...I dunno. I realized it was just like all the bad fanfics I had read.
@Sugar: Oh, I know that actor. He was good in HP, and maybe he'll make Twilight better

The three biggest issues with Twilight, I believe are...

-The author's inability to pick words with applicable implications for the scenes she's trying to set. The opening for instance. What is "sauntered" doing in there? Why did the editor not catch this? I mean, go through and fix about 1% of the vocabulary and you could make the book 100% better!

-The raging Suehood of the characters. This was probably an easy fix at one point. Now that she's getting on with book four, not so much anymore.

-It's really not half the book it could have been. So many good ideas, snuffed out by small flaws. A few small issues could have been cute, even! "It is beautiful because it is flawed" and all. But there are just SO MANY they compound one another.

Do your ideas justice, and justice will be done unto you! Don't, and people start making obscene puns out of your book titles.

That's the thing that kills me about the book. It could have been an amazing story, and I don't even think I'd have minded the sparkles, but it was pretty repetitive and sappy, and the two don't go well together.

I think that's why a lot of people don't like it, because the idea is amazing, but the author did a poor job of putting it across in words.

My friend loves the book. She got it in the mail, and she was just jumping up and down, holding it, and then she had to use the bathroom. She [apparently] didn't let the book go out of both her hands at once. o_O

I HAVE read why you guys think it could have been much better (Case and point, Saint Savin's "The three biggest issues with Twilight"), but why do people LIKE it so much? If there are any fans of this, please don't be afraid to come out. I'm sure they others won't burn you at the stake.
...Much.

Ryojo, I think these bottles of barbecue sauce we brought scared them off...

Well, there are a lot of reasons why people don't like the books. Many haven't even read them, and just aren't into the romance genre as Meyer writes it. Because it IS, in a way, romantic. It's romantic to high school girls who are romantics at heart. Whether you think of it as stalking or not is of personal opinion, and some girls find Edward's ways to be acceptable. Some girls don't.

A lot of people don't like how easy the book is to read, how immature it is, but it is written for young adult females. I don't care how mature you think you are, when you're a teenager you're not THAT mature. I'm not a teenager and I'm not THAT mature. The book was written for a certain group of people, and those people latched on. Whether you enjoy the books or not, Meyer succeeded. The books are popular for a reason.

Also, a lot of people simply disslike the book because of how much people obsess over it. But they have to understand that everyone's cup of tea is different, and it doesn't matter if someone thinks her work is simply the best there is. If that's how they feel, that's truth to them.

Honestly, all the bashing of Meyer herself is disturbing to me. Hate the book if you want, hate the fangirls if you want, but what she wrote was her idea, she did it from scratch, and she wrote a book that moved people. She succeeded, and I respect her for that, no matter what I think of her books. (they weren't the worst thing I'd ever read, I can honestly say Eragon was, and they weren't the best thing I'd ever read.)

I AM one of those people who hates things just for being mainstream. Maybe if I was as much of a reader as a writer, I might hate it.
But I have no opinion on Twilight.

I have somewhat of an idea my Meyer herself gets picked on. She comes off more like a youtube celebrity than an author what with the drama and the bawwing and the being babysat by her older brother. Is it an excuse? Probably not, but a lot of people see it as an in.

Can't people just deal with the books though? I mean, they're chock full of the bad kind of wrong. You'd think they'd have enough material.

If anything, Meyer has done a service to the literary world at large, just not for the reasons she might have liked. She's inspired a generation of writers to do better than her.

I hope she goes down as the Ed Wood of pop fiction.

I agree with Saint about inspiring a generation of writers to better than her, and I am one.

I read the first three about a year or so ago and it just made me think of what vampires had come to. She destroyed them for me. I love the supernatural genre and would read anything but it was something I would write when I was younger (much younger).
Take vampires from J.R.Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Tanya Huff. They all are different from each other in the sense of their vampires are so different (I know they are adult vampire books but still) but there is something about Meyers vampires that made me angry.

There are such good writers out there, who can write a believeable vampire and she gets the fame. Hand me Ward anyday.

I understand the shock of someone being famous for writing terrible books (believe me, Paolini was a shocker, big time), but you know what? Good for him, and hey, if it gets kids into reading, reading ANYTHING, that's a bonus for me. You wouldn't believe the number of kids I teach that hate to read. It's sad.

The way some people today treat literature, you'd think there was a shortage of books! The library tells me this is not the case.

I'm thinking after I get done drafting, I might set myself a goal of getting my fantasy world reference materials shored up. I'm cutting the sentient species down to seven!

...I hope XD.

Oh, here's a fun question. Do you like to use...

-Stock species
-Twists of stock species
-Just humans
-Or crazy stuff you made up

...for your fantasy?

In fantasy I use many species but I keep it simple and don't go too far out there. I include humans as they are there on Earth. I love world building.

I usually include my fantasy situations as well though wink

You know, I honestly believe it must be hard to try to pull off fantasy WITHOUT humans. You kind of need them for your readers to mentally hang on to XD.

I've sort of decided I can't go too far with the odd creatures.

Reason: China Mieville had a sex scene involving a woman with a scarab for a head in one of his books. And no one complained!
