Taking her badge and rewards in hand, Natalia stored them away in her bag, quietly excusing herself from the gym as Falkner moved to heal his pokemon back to full health. "So next we're going to....?" She looked to Nyomii for confirmation. "Azalea Town, where you'll be battling Bugsy. We'll have to pass through Union Cave to get there." Nyomii suggested, a lot more amicable now that she wasn't so high off of the ground. "Right...." Natalia kept having that odd feeling, the feeling that she should know these places and people, but nothing was quite coming to mind. She certainly felt something stirring in her subconscious, as if the answers were right there on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't quite get them to come until Nyomii filled it in for her. Honestly, it was really frustrating. "Don't worry dear, you'll get there." Nyomii insisted.
Blaze, on the other hand wiggled happily as they headed toward Union Cave, proud of her successful fight. ('You saw that right??? I was all like "oh no you don't!" and then I was like BAM! I'm gonna punch you in the face, stupid bird!') Natalia and Nyomii chuckled lightly. "You were pretty cool, I have to admit. I don't think Falkner would have ever thought his birds would be knocked out in one hit with a fighting type move." Nyomii nodded in agreement. "That is the drawback of using a move like roost I suppose. Though, I'm sure Falkner saw it as an advantage to escape electric type moves and he never thought about the flip side of things. That's why you always have to think carefully about battles. They're like games of chess, only with infinitely more moves." Natalia had to agree with that. Chess was all about moves and countermoves, but battling was far more complex and unpredictable.

Jun's confusion was answered when a round-bellied chansey waddled out from behind the counter, humming merrily. "Chansey chan-sey~!"
A bemused Jun went down on one knee so the chansey could see the eggs. It rubbed them, pressed its head to the side, and then gave a startled cry.
"What. What is it?" Jun felt a spike of alarm. Had he been such a bad caretaker that they hadn't made it?
No, this was something entirely different. The Chansey's next cry was one of excitement, punctuated by businesslike chittering. Jun was herded behind the counter to a back room. A moment later there was a massive pile of blankets on the floor that he was instructed to set the eggs on.
Jun sat down cross-legged on the tiled floor, leaning against the struts of a bed for back support. He unbuckled his sword and set it aside, confident he wouldn't be needing it right now. He had a feeling that Chansey would go to great lengths to keep the eggs safe.
And it had been giving him the stinkeye while he had it at hand.
Apparently Chauncy's urgency had been justified. It had hardly been a minute since they settled in when the small tapping sound started. A piece of egg popped off, skittering along the linoleum. Both eggs knocked and rattled, creaking from the sounds of little paws or beaks or...whatever, breaking the shells.
Then a hard beak shoved its way out of one of the eggs, the other one began rattling as if racing to be first. And then the eggs finally cracked wide open and dissolved into the blankets, leaving a gangly bird blinking into the overhead lights and a tiny plant pokemon sitting in the middle of it all.
Jun's pokedex named them an archen and a fomantis. Two pokemon that were about as far from johto native as you could get. One could only be resurrected from a fossil, and the other was from... Alola!?
Jun decided to stop wondering the logistics and just accept it. He could think of some scenarios that made it plausible. Like, maybe some trainer had been breeding rare pokemon and the eggs got lost. Maybe those pokemon had been released into the wild and their offspring ended up with a wild chansey...somehow.
The situation made sense, almost, if he just didn't think about the specifics. That was fine, Jun could live with that.
And then with a thunderous squawk, the archen began to glow and evolved.
"What the ******** was now a giant raptor in the small back room of the pokemon center. No no, make that a giant untrained baby raptor. It flapped its wings with a loud Screeeee!, sending downy feathers flying.
Jun loosened his grip on his sword -when had he picked it up?- and tried to focus. Okay... okay calm... ******** luck... He shuffled forward, one hand raised.
"Yo..buddy...it's okay..."
It turned its gaze on him, nostrils flaring. The pupils narrowed, and Jun jumped back in alarm. With a joyful Screeee~! it leaped at him like a giant fluffy dog. Jun found himself pinned to the ground, arms at his side, while the archeops made happy chittering noises and snuggled its head into the crook of his neck. A light tickling of his scalp informed him that the fomantis had arrived and was running its scythe-like hands through his hair.

The remainder of the half-siblings time together was, for the most part, uneventful. A question or two about what Dandy had been up too (clearly, perfecting her art for fashion was the top answer) and how things at home were. She posed questions to Ashley of what he’d do once he’d finished his tracking and at that… he had no answer. Really as he sat there it became more apparent that he would need to get back on track, least Interpol come breathing down his neck. So they finished their meal (which at some point, they’d gotten) and conversation, bidding their adieus and so on. Ashley escorted Dandy outside, watching as the girl called upon one of the free flying transportations made available for those few who could afford them. He watched her head off back home, looking rather… thoughtful(?) in the moment before shaking his head and turning his attention elsewhere.
Apparently, he had a message on his communicator. Some little birdie tweeting potential hotspots that he best get looking into if he didn’t want trouble. They were rather… sporadically placed that the French man couldn’t help but find himself frowning at the options. Well, whatever, it was something to do for now and once he’d appeased the annoying overlords, he could get back to using real methods of tracking that actually resulted in a milligram of more guidance than what was offered.
He unleashed Odilon, the black Swanna ruffling his feathers and giving the man a tentative look before bowing down gracefully to all his trainer ease to climb on his back. Ashley gave an approving nod before doing just that, adjusting himself and his case as comfortably for himself and the bird before nudging him to stand straight; the Swanna attentively waiting for instructions.
"We will be going to Oreburgh City," Odilon nodded in understanding, giving one final adjustment before taking flight for the indicated city.

Jun was later informed by Nurse Joy that the two hatches had likely imprinted on him as their 'Mom'. That last part was said by a mouth with a hand in front of it to hide the smile. Yeah, laugh it up, Mama Jun's day can't get any weirder.
"Ah, there's also one other thing. Your dunsparce... you said you found it in the woods?" The nurse looked troubled, with a slight frown replacing her mirth.
Jun nodded. He'd told her earlier about seeing some shady people by the cave, and she'd apparently called the police about it.
"Well, it's wing was very badly hurt. We've treated him as best as we can, but he'll still need time to recover." She left Jun with his pokemon, returning to the front desk.
The archeops was asleep and curled around Jun, making affectionate gurgling noises while its razor sharp claws twitched against his thighs. The fomatis sat in his lap.
Jun, being unable to move, watched the ledian as it inspected Dunsparce. When informed of the injury, the ledian had grown agitated and...thoughful? Was that the right word for it? Jun didn't have experience interpreting bug body language.
He had no way to communicate with it, but best as he could tell the ledian felt responsible for Dunsparce. Earlier it had seemed antsy to leave as soon as possible, and Jun's best guess was that it didn't want to leave unless Dunsparce was ok.
Jun sighed. It would be a waste to take care of those two, maybe even train them, and then have them just up and leave. "You can stay with me and leave after he's better," he offered. That seemed to calm the ledian down. Still agitated, but better.
I can just focus on training these two, Jun thought, hand resting on the Archeops' head. Ought to give them names, too. Gave him something to think about while they slept.
Later, Nurse Joy did let him know that his archeops appeared healthy, despite the absolutely baffling evolution. She ran a few tests on it while he was...otherwise occupied. When she asked for permission to send the data to some researchers, Jun said it was fine but requested that he be informed of any results and that his trainer ID not be connected to the incident.
Long after his legs had gone numb, Jun had settled on the names of Cricket and Holly. He woke everyone up, gave the kids their names, shoved some food in their mouths, and headed- hey wait a second. Where was the Ledian?
Jun couldn't even remember when the last time he saw the bug was. He quickly checked the areas he'd been, but seeing nothing finally shrugged and stepped out of the center.
When Ledian came buzzing out of a nearby ally, Jun raised an eyebrow. He hadn't led the kind of life that made him question what a pokemon was up to, not to mention he hadn't noticed the two dark shadows that exited the ally by leaping to the roofs...or that one of them watched him intently for a few moments before disappearing into the city.
Sometmes, being a grunt was useful. Specifically, it was useful when it meant barely anyone bothered to remember your face. Outside of his old group and boss, most Rockets would assume he was a normal trainer.
Jun's worry that his face had been passed out to all the local members was basically moot since Yuuta filled him in on Benny keeping the whole thing under wraps. Convenient. But when he thought about it this way, it didn't make sense. Why wasn't Benny leveraging as many resources as he could to track Jun? Could it really just be covering his own a**?
The downside of being a grunt was that the landscape of a small town like this was one Jun just didn't know. Local businesses, politics, gangs and Rocket business... There was no way to avoid or take advantage of anything easily. Most of Jun's knowledge was of the workings of the organization in Goldenrod, and that didn't even cover everything going on in that huge city.
Still, as long as there wasn't a secret Rocket base under the trainer school Jun would probably be fine.
The trainer's school was large, larger than expected for such a small city. Jun wondered idly if he was just used to the sprawl of Goldenrod now. The floors of the school were a polished wood that Jun was amused to recognize as virola, which his father had once referred to as "poor man's mahogany".
...It was funny because that was the name of his hometown.
The school itself was about what he had imagined, though the hallways and aisles between desks were a bit wider than usual to account for the presence of pokemon. Class was currently in session, and from what Jun could see most students were required to keep their pokemon inside during school, but he assumed that at some point they would be let out.
After signing up for the generic trainer info class, Jun entered a sunny room populated with a hodgepodge of people. He recognized the two girls he'd seen on the road earlier. The rest were mostly teenagers, with one older man in the front. Jun sat near the back, to go as unnoticed as possible, though a boy did eye his sword with wide eyes, and he wasn't sure but he thought the two girls' hushed whispers might be about him. He leaned back and crossed his arms, trying to look as unapproachable as possible. He didn't feel like talking to anyone right now.
Not long after Jun's arrival the teacher walked in and began. The class was primarily basic trainer knowledge Jun already knew. He did learn about the local gym leader, and that the Sprout Tower was apparently not only a good place to train but also that the monks who trained there may reward someone who was able to best them all in battle.
When the class was over, they were informed they could use one of the school's outside areas designated for pokemon battles. Most everyone shuffled out to the grounds, an air of excitement growing among the newbie trainers. Jun himself wanted practice for his new pokemon but wasn't feeling that same excitement himself.
He wondered if he should feel bitter about that. He couldn't remember ever feeling that way. His first experience with a pokemon had not been pleasant.
"Hey mistah. You wanna battle?" A kid with a gap-tooth tugged on Jun's coat, his smile showing all his teeth.
"Sure." Jun didn't feel there was anything more he needed to say.
He proceeded to battle anyone from the class that wanted to, but it wasn't long before everyone's pokemon were tired out and needing to rest. Lower leveled pokemon certainly needed the rest.

Whether it was Julie's laughter, or Mareepa's bleating, or the sheer size of the group, or even Tria's protective presence, the group wasn't really bothered on their way through the cave. They made it to the other side, Julie running off with the white sheep, with the other trailing behind to keep an eye. "Hm..." Karren made a small sound as she looked after the two, before turning to Torin. "I need to leave for other things. You two seem to be in safe hands, but try and... take care, as best you can," she said, her expression detached, but her voice grinding to a bit of meaning at the end, before she turned, and disappeared back into the cave. The blond frowned after her, before turning to glance over at Julie, and sighing. He pulled out his cigarettes and tapped one into his palm, grabbing his lighter but holding off as he made his way over to the girl. "Hey, Julie, I'm going to step aside a second, okay? Stay safe with the pokemon, maybe do a little battling. I'll see if I can find some information on the gym, alright?" he suggested. She looked up, nodding, and turned her attention back to the pokemon. He managed a quick smile, before standing, lighting his cigarette, and moving further into the boundaries of the city. He kept close, with her in view, while Tria moved up to stand close to the girl, her eyes on her older brother. Julie didn't spare a second glance-- she returned to playing with Mareepa, running around, and avoiding the tall grass.

Torin managed to catch a passerby to ask about the gym leader. He got the impression people didn't really smoke in this town -- or at least, not around this guy -- given the look he kept making, and tried to do the polite thing and abstain from taking a drag while they talked. Julie was busy playing with Mareepa, but the male sheep was watching steadily, splitting his attention between staring at Torin, and looking over to the young girls. "She is.... unique," Tria observed, stepping up alongside the sheep pokemon. He glanced up, quickly side stepping away. She caught him by surprise, somehow, but he wasn't... scared or anything. "Yeah--""On the outside, and inside," Tria continued. He shut his mouth and stared up at her, static jumping around him.
"She's my sister," he retorted back sharply, looking back to the two. Tria bowed her head down and looked at him. "She's adorable," she reassured him, before straightening, and trotting over to corral the two away from the tall grass. She knew that Torin had mentioned maybe training and fighting some wild pokemon, but... she wasn't sure they were quite ready for that.

Jun, wary of going straight back to the pokemon center to get his just-hatched pokemon healed, headed into the city instead. He got lunch, noted the layout of the streets in case he needed to leave the area quickly, and got an idea of where the Sprout Tower was. By the time he did go back to the pokemon center, he was grateful to find a different nurse on duty so he wasn't judged while he got Cricket and co. healed up.
The afternoon he spent in the Sprout Tower, rounding out his training. The monks did give him a prize when he finished, going so far as to comment on his "strong bond" with his newly-hatched pokemon. Cool.
He spent the night at the pokemon center, getting Cricket and Holly checked up before bed. In the morning he slept in, since the gym wouldn't even be open when he normally woke up. After breakfast he headed over, and was pleased when he arrived to find that no other challengers were there already.
Battles
[ Fyi i'm just encountering pokemon in violet city, not actually mechanically going to sprout tower thread or challenging there ]
Jun noted idly to himself that despite everything, he actually didn't know how to challenge a gym. He'd gotten the hours and location from the class yesterday, and they'd assured him it was fine to just show up and request an official battle. But he still felt out of place calling out for a challenge.
As he was waiting for Falkner to arrive, Jun realized that there was probably some irony in using a largely flightless rock bird to take down the flying type gym leader.
"Welcome to my gym." A strong voice echoed from the rafters moments before a massive pidgeot swooped down to deposit its rider on the packed dirt of the floor. Faulkner was of average height, with an angular cut of blue hair that hung over one eye. He crossed his arms after landing, and even from across the room Jun could tell they were well-toned from working with bird pokemon. "I am Falkner, the flying-type gym leader of Johto. You wish to battle?"
Um...yes? Why else would he be here? He'd already called out his challenge, too. Falkner eyed Cricket.
"I thought you might be here for me to look at her. Nurse Joy told me the circumstances."
Oh. Well then. Jun made a noncommittal grunt as Falkner approached Cricket. "You know I specialize in bird type pokemon, correct?" the gym leader asked, eyes on the archeops. He made a gesture and she obediently raised one wing and then the other. He ran his hands along certain muscles and patches of feathers, nodding to himself.
"Well, she appears to be completely healthy. I have no idea how, but she even lacks the majority of her juvenile traits." Falkner mumbled something about training feathers and flight before he finally backed off. He'd been excited to get a look at Cricket since he was told about her yesterday, and now wasn't sure how to feel about his findings. As far as he could tell, she seemed perfectly normal, if you didn't know what age she actually was.
Still... "Are you planning on battling with her?" he asked. The edge to his voice made Jun think he disapproved.
"Yeah. I took her to the trainer school yesterday and she was doing fine." Jun had an edge of his own to his voice- he was tired of people assuming things and judging him. He thought he'd left this kind of treatment behind.
Thankfully, Falkner just gave Cricket one last appraising look before accepting what Jun said. If he hadn't been informed by Nurse Joy about the bird's age, he would have, in his expert opinion, been impressed by her health and eager to see her in battle. "Well, suppose you're right. Fine, we'll battle. But my ref and I will be keeping an eye on her, and if either of us notice anything you're switching her out."
"Agreed." With that, Falkner walked back to the other side of the battlefield. A section of the wall slid back, and he selected pokeballs to use in the battle, likely to match the attack power of the pokemon Jun would be using.
Gym Battle
vs. Pidgey Pidgey used Gust = 40 x 0.5 = 20 damage [Cricket 100/120] Cricket used Stone Edge = 100 x 2 x 1.5 = 300 damage [Pidgey 0/130]
vs. Pidgeotto Pidgeotto used Quick Attack = 40 x 0.5 = 20 damage [Cricket 80/120] Cricket used Stone Edge = 100 x 2 x 1.5 = 300 damage [Pidgeotto 0/170]
If the hatchling did have any medical issue related to her odd evolution, Falkner never had the chance to see it; hell, he hadn’t even had the chance to see the actual battle, it’d been finished in the blink of the eye. ”Well, I suppose my doubts have been put to rest.” Just like his father’s pokemon... Putting aside his shock, Falkner rolled back his shoulders and stroller over to Jun, a gym badge and TM at the ready. ”Here you are, the Zephyr badge, and TM Roost — you’ve certainly earned both,” the man remarked. From underneath his bangs he glanced at Cricket with both eyes, before he shifted his attention to her trainer. ”Keep an eye on her.” It was the last he’d say on the matter, and afterwards, once their business had concluded, the gym leader focused his efforts on healing his own team.
