Hey little girl, sun on your shoulders And the light in your eyes I got a feelin' you ain't been readin' the news... Yuki sighed, staring up at the sky with bored brown eyes a moment, with a distracted expression on her face, before she turned her eyes back down to her book. My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. In newspaper photos of missing girls from the seventies, most looked like me: white girls with mousy brown hair. This was before kids of all races and genders started appearing on milk cartons or in the daily mail. It was still back when people believed things like that didn't happen.
In my junior high yearbook I had a quote from a Spanish poet my sister had turned me on to, Juan Ramon Jimenez. It went like this: "If they give you ruled paper, write the other way." I chose it both because it expressed my contempt for my structured surroundings a' la the classroom and because, not being some dopey quote from a rock group, I thought it marked me as literary. I was a member of the Chess Club and Chem Club and burned everything I tried to make in Mrs. Delminico's home ec class. My favorite teacher was Mr. Botte, who taught biology and liked to animate the frogs and crawfish we had to dissect by making them dance in their waxed pans.
I wasn't killed by Mr. Botte, by the way. Don't think every person you're going to meet in here is suspect...
The girl in question was sitting on the ground, back against the trunk of an old oak tree with grass poking up around her seated form. One hand held the book on her lap, the other held the page flat as it marked her spot on the page. Her face was turned down, her mind already wrapped in the yarns of the tale before she had even finished the first page. A slight breeze blew through the clearing, almost causing Yuki to loose her page as her silver hair blew around her in crazy whips. The wind, however, quickly died down. She looked up, not noticing anybody, before she slid her glasses up her nose and went back to her book.
It's quiet here because everybody is at the fair. Maybe I should go too... she thought, finishing her page and smoothly flipping it over so that she could continue with the plot, It's nice out, today. ...These days they say there's no silver linin' Still you find it every time The see the rain, you see the sunshine

His clothing and body was scuffed with dirt and his feet padded softly on the ground as he located a patch of soft grass. With a slight groan he keeled over with a dull thud, as he lay on his stomach.
His eyes wandered from object to object that was in his line of sight however, only barely recognizing the outlining shape of it. Once finished with his swift assessment of the garden his eyes closed as his breathing grew somewhat less ragid and more peaceful. His ears flicked at any noise which reached them as being something unfamiliar and sometimes his eyes would open slightly to investigate what made the sound. Despite having fallen over a couple feet away from a girl who was reading, Xe hadn't noticed anyone in the garden. He dropped his cautionary act and soon rolled over onto his back gazing at the sky with a small smile pulling at the edge of his mouth. ≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎≎ ...With all the glamor and glory Well I'm not leavin' don't worry There's so much more to the story Cause I'm an infinite quarry

Hey little girl, sun on your shoulders And the light in your eyes I got a feelin' you ain't been readin' the news... The girl hardly noticed as she was joined, only noticing his presence because a squirrel overhead ran across a branch and dropped a stick on her book. Her inquisitive brown eyes shot up, following the mammal in the tree for a few seconds before she brought them down to her page. Oddly, they got distracted along the way.
The boy was lying in the grass, far off to the side of her. If not for her peripheral vision, she wouldn't have seen him at all. She turned her head, blinking twice, marking her page with a leaf and rolling onto her knees. She crawled cautiously over to him, blinking twice as she got closer. He was dirty, she noticed, almost as though he had been running away from something for a while, but there was still an air of elegance and beauty to him. She blinked again, reaching out for a strand of his white hair.
"He's like... a cat." she said, her nearly silent voice distant, distracted, and blunt. She blinked, still a few feet away from him, and retracted her hand. She'd never reach back here! But she was afraid to scare him off. She tilted her head slightly, inspecting the boy, as she reached out one hand and kept her crouched form up with the other. "Here kitty-kitty." she mewled, her face like that of a child about to fall asleep, but too curious about something to allow them-self to slumber. In truth, Yuki was more awake than ever, her eyes alight as she shuffled forward an inch or so, "Here kitty~" ...These days they say there's no silver linin' Still you find it every time The see the rain, you see the sunshine

Bringing his legs up he quickly arched his back letting himself land on his feet as he jumped a couple feet away from the girl. Crouching down on his toes, his knees spread apart as his hands rested on the ground in front of him. His eyes began studying the girl.
The urge to run was pounding in his skull but his body remained still in the crouched position. His eyes held some fear of the girl, as he did not know if she was a threat or not. His mouth opened slightly but closed quickly as he studied the open hand of the girl. His mouth opened once more but this time words flowed out. "What are you doing?" He asked his voice soft and hardly audible. His urge subsided a bit as his curiosity rose slightly.
A sleeved hand was brought up to his face as if trying to wipe the weariness from his eyes. Loose chain rattled as he dropped his arm back down in front of him. The alarms in his head quieted down when he noticed that the girl seemed to be more curious of him then anything else. He studied her silver hair for a second before looking at the book. Having never really encountered one his head tilted slightly as his eyes seemed to be entranced by it.

"Ah." her lips parted in a perfect 'o' as she watched him jump back. He didn't run, though, so she decided to answer his questions. Her brown eyes still sparking inquiringly, she allowed her lips to move slowly, forming quiet words as she gazed at the boy. "Well, you were taking a cat nap, and you reminded me of a cat." she said bluntly, her tone not condescending, but sounding as though these facts were rather obvious things which the boy should know. "I like cats, so I called to you." She tilted her head slightly, watching the direction that his gaze shifted to. "It's a good book. I'm nearly finished, you can borrow it if you'd like." she said her tone still flat and blunt. "My name is Yuki Nagato. Your's is..?" she questioned, falling back on her tush with a slight gasp of air. She blinked staring awkwardly ahead for a moment, in an unusual daze, before she blinked and refocused her attention. ...These days they say there's no silver linin' Still you find it every time The see the rain, you see the sunshine

He answered when she asked his name. His body grew less tense as he sat down crossing his legs underneath him. "Thanks... but I don't know how to read." He said his ears perking up slightly as the leaves rustled from the wind.
His blue eyes returned to studying the girl. "Am I really that cat-like?" He asked curiously having never thought about it before. He rested his elbows on his knees bringing his hands together to form a rest for his chin. "Whats it about?" He asked her referring to her book. Despite never knowing how to read, he had heard stories and they did intrigue him greatly enough that he wanted to know what she was reading.

She nodded her head slightly, getting into a more... appropriate sitting position, with her legs tucked under her. "You can't read?" she asked increadiously, blinking in actual horror. Yuki couldn't imagine what life would be like without her books, but 'unlivable' was one of the words which flitted into her mind. "I can teach you. It would probably be really helpful, for your classes, I mean." she explained, tilting her head down slightly, looking up at him.
"What's the book about? Well..." she paused, trying to think of how to explain it. "It's sort of weird, kind of like a murder mystery told from the perspective of the victim. See, this girl dies and from heaven she can see everything that's happening on earth, if she wants to. So she watches as her case goes cold. Her family, though, is thrown into chaos by her murder, and her father is desperate to try and solve it. And... that's the summary of the majority of the book. If you want to know the ending, you'll just have to read it for yourself!" she exclaimed, standing suddenly, and giving him a rare smile. Another gust of wind blew through the clearing, ruffling her hair as she watched the comfortable boy. "So, Mr. Xe, shall we make you literate?" she asked, offering her free hand to help him up.
In truth, Yuki was surprised by her own openness. It wasn't like her to be so helpful, or to even get involved. But something about not being able to read... it was depressing, like a sin against life. She couldn't imagine it being plausible, yet she was faced with it when she faced this boy. She was determined, it would be one challenged that she would actually apply herself to. ...These days they say there's no silver linin' Still you find it every time The see the rain, you see the sunshine

He hadn't ever had anyone help him with something so he was wondering what he would have to do to pay her back. Hearing about the book however did get him interested in learning how to read. It seemed a good thing to learn and since he needed it for school he decided to accept her offer. "Uh... Thanks" It was the only thing he could think of saying, having never been in such a situation.
Taking her hand with his sleeved one he stood up. Xe opened his mouth but closed it. He was going to say that he wasn't of Mr. class but stopped himself remembering that he wasn't a slave anymore. "If you want Miss Yuki.." He said bowing thankfully. Xe gave a small smile in return to her smile. He decided that this girl wasn't a bad person and he was happy to meet her on his first day at this place.
"But how do we make me Literate?" He asked not knowing the process to become such. His thoughts ran wild as he wondered what kind of things he would have to do to become literate. Most of what he thought he would have to do was rubbish, like fighting a dragon or going through a maze to find a secret treasure. His thoughts made his smile grow wider, he was getting excited about learning something new.

Yuki looked at him sideways, blinking blankly. Nodding her head as she fell back into her usual state. "You're welcome." she mumbled, a faint smile still playing at her lips as she hauled him to his feet. Releasing his hand she danced back lazily a moment before she turned around. "Of course I want. Reading is a wonderful thing... we should start in the library..." she mumbled the last part, looking at the tree she had been under curiously as though it would tell her the idea was a good one.
After a moment her head shifted suddenly, as though she were waking suddenly. Brought back to reality by his question she paused, looking into space thoughtfully for a moment before she responded in a slow, thoughtful tone. "Can you write any?" she asked, turning her wise eyes to the boy, "If not, we start with the alphabet." she stated, not using a cruel or condescending tone. Just like before, it was simply a statement. A fact which couldn't really be argued against.
After a moment of staring into space once again Yuki shook her head. No, I have to focus. she thought, bringing her book up to her chest and holding it there with both hands. "You don't have to call me 'miss'. It makes me feel old." she stated, frowning slightly as she took a few steps away. "Well, are you coming?" she asked, turning her head over her shoulder with an inquisitive expression. ...These days they say there's no silver linin' Still you find it every time The see the rain, you see the sunshine

"Haven't a clue about writing" He answered her. Xe fell into step a couple feet behind her. "Is writing needed to read?" He asked her not knowing if the two were related.
"Sorry about that." He apologized for calling her miss. He began drifting into his thoughts not really paying attention to much else. "Yeah I'm Coming" He replied absentmindedly. He had been wondering what the school was like and was going to see it later. Andrew glided almost silently through the Fuyu garden. This was the first chance he'd had to properly explore the place; and, as he was coming to realize, it was certainly going to merit a far more thorough exploration in the future. The potential for his practices here was, quite literally, blooming. As if to prove his point to himself, he stooped to pluck an orchid off of the ground near the path. Then, with hardly a thought and a simple twist of his hands, the petals of the dying flower flooded with color and fluttered; within moments, a monarch butterfly had fluttered away out of Andrew's hands.
He smiled, then turned to a nearby willow and, pulling out a bone saw, gashed it open with a flick of the wrist. In an uncharacteristic spot of unobservantness, he failed to take note of the fact that he wasn't alone in the garden.
