Staring Berry Fellow flute players!! Whats the fastest, best way to 1. Get rid of my stupid rustiness on the flute 2. Practice at home with out the other instruments or director Please help! This is my first year in marching band since 8th grade and I'm a junior in high school now gonk 1. Flutes rust very rarely. If it is actual rust damage, the best advice is so get it cleaned professionally since home-cleaning rust has a very high chance of damaging the instrument. If it is just tarnish (from being silver plated or something similar), there are tarnish clothes that you can buy at any instrument repair shop that deals with woodwind instruments. 2. Metronomes will be your friend. If you don't have the rest of the band, if you have your timing right, then you should be ready to go during a rehearsal. Also, try finding a recording so you know how your part is supposed to fit in with the rest of the ensemble. By the way, 'sup guys? My last post was almost a year ago. sweatdrop

I meant that I'm rusty at playing... sweatdrop But thanks, I'll try to get to a band store and find a metronome/tuner. I think our director will give us the links to the songs soon.

srsirishdancer96 Death God Killer My little cousin is looking into getting a piccolo during the holiday season. What brands might one recommend for a high school student? My band teacher recommends Yamaha, because even the student ones are pretty good quality. They do not make an all-silver/ silver-plated one anymore- just grenadilla wood, which is not good to have during marching season if it is raining, and if they just do concerts, then do a wood headpiece, as the silver headpiece makes the pic more shrill, so it can be heard over the band, but during concert season, people tend to want all of the instruments to blend in sound... I'm looking at getting a piccolo too- but this summer, before school starts (I have a late summer birthday- almost mid-September) Do not do a colored piccolo off of eBay- they fall apart a lot. Or so I've heard. Pearl are pretty good, so is an Emerson Piccolo, Jupiter is a student brand, so if this cousin wants to keep playing professionally after high school, get them a more expensive one (Jupiter runs about $500, while Yamaha runs about $1,200, and lots of piccolos are much more expensive). Do not do a Gemeinhardt- that is a completely beginning student brand, and on flutes the mouthpiece is what a professional flutist calls "stiff"- and it is the same on their piccolos. This makes it easier for new flutists to play, but it makes it harder for them to advance much, as the mouthpiece is for beginners. They make other headpieces for flutes, but I have yet to see one for a piccolo... This is not a Yamaha piccolo, but it illustrates what to look for: After I get my piccolo, I will probably (if I remember) post back about how good the Yamaha piccolo is...Just out of curiosity, how long has this cousin been playing piccolo? Because that could also change things a little... As could their plans for with the piccolo... You could also ask their band teacher what to look for in a piccolo... And bear in mind that the piccolo is one of the most temperamental instruments in a band- so have someone actually play the piccolo for you before you buy it- have them do a chromatic scale, as then you know the range on that piccolo. Even two piccolos that are the exact same could sound different.Sorry, I did not notice when you posted that message... Did your cousin get a piccolo, and what brand? And how do they like it? She quit band a few months go, not sure if she'll continue to play. Either way she wouldn't be able to play that piccolo for months because it doesn't have a lip plate

I have been playing flute for four years now, and I plan on trying to learn alto flute or piccolo soon. But those might have to wait awhile since I'm only in 7th grade and still learning the most complicated things on flute. I got the basics down and more. I love playing old rock music, and random tidbits like Pink Panther or Baby Elephant Walk. I am really good with listening to a note played on any instument and knowing the note without anyone telling me. So I usually can play popular music by just listening to it over and over (i.e. Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift...pretty easy actually). Well, I'll stop running my talkative mouth...BYE!

So, recently, we just got new music for a concert this Monday night. I am omaong 4 other flute players. I am probably most experienced. First of all, I pissed 'em all off when my band teacher went through and had them each play the same measure individually but he skipped me and said I'm good, he doesn't need to hear mine. Then, one of the songs we are playing is really easy (and I mean, like half notes all the way through the song with the occasional fourth or eighth note), so I told him "Hey, I'm bored playing this song, is there a harder version for flute?" His answer, "No, but I can write the trumpet part into flute music if you'd like." He showed me the trumpet part and I agreed it would be better for me since I like challenges, so the next day he came and gave me the new music. I am the only flute that gets to play that part. So, yeah, I get some mean looks from the other 3 flute players most of the time.....

What flute would you recommend to buy cause I'm about to go to college their band says they would provide piccolos so I guess that mean all flutes will play that for marching but I still wanna buy a flute to be safe if that isn't the case and I would need one anyway for concert season surprised

It's the only flute brand still made in america. It pisses me off though because it's very temperamental depending on the weather. I don't know where I was going with this.... sweatdrop take what you want out of this statement....

Jupiter is mostly for students, both high school and college, but Yamaha is also really good (that's what my piccolo is, and it's really nice...), Gemmies are good, but they are usually "stiff" in the headpiece, but you can buy a new headpiece to remedy that, if you already have one. Do you already have a flute of any sort? If not, you should really just rent one until you find the one that is right for you. Or, another option is a website that sells only flutes and instruments from the flute family... the url is http://www.fluteworld.com/index.php?action=kat&wart=in , and you are allowed to try the flute before you buy it. They also sell used flutes, which are usually substantially cheaper, and they check them over to make sure that it is in working condition before selling it. If you can, you should check them out. They change stock regularly, so if you don't find one that you like, you can check back frequently. Whatever you do, don't buy the colorful ones on eBay or Amazon, as they are made from a cheap metal alloy that bends and does not hold up well. If it helps, this is what my flute looks like (it's the same case and everything... even the extra key... And it looks to be in good condition... It IS open-holed, which is really weird at first, but then you never want to go back to close-holed (although, for some odd reason, piccolos do not feel strange, although flutes do...)...) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jupiter-Flute-Model-jfl-511r-ii-Flute-rarely-used-/151095697342?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item232e015fbe I hope this helps! I spent a lot of time last summer researching flute and piccolo buying in general, and spent close to three weeks drooling over the flutes and piccolos for sale online...

hanging gallow yea!!!a flute section... i was wondering if there wasn't any flutes or no one cared to put one up... i was going to but i didn't know how well it would take due to me being new to this guild... but flute is my love... actually i love piccolo a little more than flute just because it annoys people soo much...but still flute or a piccolo... In my marching band (I'm probably not allowed to say this here, if so i'm sorry!!!), the piccolo section, which i'm a part of, is considered the section that eats the most food and makes peoples ears bleed. Though it's all in jest, of course.

Yay flutes! I've been playing for 9 years now and I'm in my 4th year of college. I march piccolo and play it for pep band. I'm currently on the hunt for a cheap-ish solid silver flute for my junior recital in November. Busy times! I wouldn't trade it for the world though
