It's show time!

ZOMG T! Bad news about VC! Samurai Showdown is a VC title now.

Mmmm... Tasty!

Yes, I know I'm late, but the minute I saw this I had to say that Samurai Shodown is never bad news.

It's been a while, but here is another edition of Mephisto's Music Mania!

For those of you who don't know what this is, I basically pay my respects to a track from a video game series and give everyone a link where they can hear the track also.

Today's song comes from the Super Mario Land for the GB, which is the Dungeon theme, also known as Easton Kingdom.

This track has a very dark Middle-Eastern vibe, and it sounds very cool.

This song was featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which added an arrangement of drums, various synthesizers, and I believe a guitar has also been added to the arrangement.

Here is the original Gameboy version:

Here is the Brawl Arrangement:

I'm glad to know that Nintendo has not forgotten this awesome piece of music.

I know I haven't forgotten! That was my very first video game!

Back then, I worked my arse off to get to the Chai Kingdom so I could hear the music from that level. I wish I still had my original copy of it.

But all I can do now is Rom it.

I still have my original copy somewhere in my house. That game had a good soundtrack for an early Gameboy title.

EDIT:

I think it's good to always give credit to video game soundtracks when they are great pieces of music, so expect more of these to come soon.

Amen, brother.

While we're on the subject of good VG Music, allow me to go ahead and add this here:

For those of you who have played Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest, you may have gone through the stage Bramble Blast. Blasting through barrels, aviodiing the spike-studded walls... very tricky. The music, though, was a symphony for the ears!

That's why it was called "Stickerbrush Symphony", I guess xd

Anyhoo, here's the original:

And the Brawl version! Slightly sped up from the original, but just as epic!

Both of those were good.

Anyway, in the spirit of music, shall we continue?

Although I was never the biggest fan of the Star Fox franchise, and have never played Star Fox Assault, this piece of music sticks out to my ears.

This version of his theme has a very American Western feel to it mixed with your typical classical elements. Reminds me of something Ennio Morricone would compose (for those of you who don't know Ennio Morricone, he composed brilliant pieces such as "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" as well as "Ecstacy of Gold".)

This track was also used for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, although I don't think they remixed it.

Anyway, here it is:

Here's a bonus, this is what the theme would sound like in an 8-bit format:

Now friends, we come to another episode of...

Behind the Controller!

Today our guest is Orphie! Let's give her a hand!

"So, aside form videogames, what you you like to do?"

Orphie
Well, I work on my own web-comic and I draw a lot.  I also like to spend time with my dog and my mom.  And I eat.  I do lots of eating. And sleeping.  And showering.  And sometimes I breathe. Oh! And lately I've taken up photography.  I'm a very art-oriented person. The only sport I like to do is swim.

"A web-comic, huh? That's cool! I work on a fanfiction myself. It's nice you're so artistic!"

"Word on the street is you like pets. What is your favorite in particular and why?"

Orphie
Dogs.  I have always loved dogs.  I grew up with dogs.  I used to PRETEND I was a dog.  I just love how affectionate they are and how they always seem to know when you're sad.

In particular, my dog seems to know everything, while being the dumbest animal on the planet.

"Ah, man's best friend. That's great! I'd want a puppy, myself. Those shiny eyes, full of love..." 4laugh

"We all live in different places, that much is true. What is the world around you like?"

Orphie
Lots of trees.  And lakes.  There are a LOT of lakes.  Almost every town around here is built around a lake.  And we have farms and cows.  Lots of farms.  Minnesota is a lot more appealing than North or South Dakota, since that's just flat and ugly and there's nothing going on for miles.

And to Bleu: Your cows can't win against ours!

"Excellent. Well, let's wrap this up; anything else you'd like to add?"

Orphie
That was really short.  I thought it was gonna be longer.  Anyway, if anyone wants to play Animal Crossing with me, just PM me.  And if you want a Charmander PLEASE, tell me!  I want to get rid of the damn things!

Hehe, okay! Thanks for your time!

Hello everyone, welcome to another review. Today I'll be reviewing Yoshi for the NES.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
User Image

Yoshi is a late bloomer of the NES console, coming out in 1991/1992. It's a puzzle game in which you stack various Mario baddies from Goombas, Boos, Piranha Plants, and Bloopers, as well as 2 halves of a Yoshi egg.

There are 2 objectives to this game, first is to prevent your stacks from reaching the top (similar to most puzzle games like Tetris and Puyo Puyo.) The second is to create Yoshis through the eggs. You can either connect the 2 halves alone creating a small baby Yoshi, or you can have a bottom half with various baddies on it, and have the top crushing all of the baddies into 1 egg, creating a bigger baby Yoshi, the more baddies within the eggs, the bigger the Yoshi and the more points you get.

Sample 1 (No baddies):

Sample 2 (stacked baddies):

Notice that the Yoshi from sample 2 is much bigger? That will earn you more points. You want to try and get those when you can, but getting smaller Yoshis is obviously easier.

Now that we've covered the basic objectives of the game, let's get into the start, which is an options screen:

User Image

As you may be able to notice, there are 2 different modes of play. A and B. A is continuous, similar to Tetris, and as each level progresses, your gameplay increases in speed and difficulty. Game B's objective is to clear the screen of all stacks. So once the screen is empty, you will proceed to the next level, with each game getting harder as they add stacks to each round(First round is empty, 2nd round has 2 enemies on each stack, etc.)

Next allows you to pick a level of difficulty, 1 being the easiest, and each additional level becoming exponentially harder than the last.

You can choose to make the game fast or slow with the speed option, and it also allows you to pick the music you want. I generally keep the default music, which is the Mushroom icon, though if you don't like the 3 songs provided, you can choose to turn the music off, though the soundtrack is fitting and enjoyable.

Controls are basic. A and B flip the stacks around, start is the pause button, and select is to select players.

In multiplayer mode, you can compete against a friend, one being Mario, the other controlling Luigi. Basically, it's the same rules, last man standing is the winner.

Overall this is a fun puzzle game that will keep you busy. It may not be the best puzzle game around, but it is fun. If you never played it before, try it. It's available on the Wii Virtual Console for 500 points. This game also had an appearance on the Gameboy also, and is generally the same. I give this game an 8/10.

Thank you very much.

I may have another review either later today or tomorrow, depending on what games catch my eye.

Well folks, I'm going to have my own section in the N Cult News from now on. I'll be doing reviews for more modern games than Mephisto's. I'll also keep you up to date on the latest big Nintendo news.

User Image
Now, I'm going to be reviewing Yoshi's Story on Virtual Console. Like Yoshi (Reviewed by Mephisto up the page a bit, go check it out first) it's a game staring Yoshi from the Mario games. Personally I love the fact that Yoshi has his own games, but Luigi needs a little more attention. The game starts off with the opening of a story book and tells the start of the story in the form of a pop up book.
User Image
Each of the pages in this book hold various levels of which you must choose one. This is one of the few sidescrollers on the N64 and shows off how a good one should be made. You move Yoshi from left to right collecting fruits and defeating enemys blocking your path. You can swallow enemys by grabbing them with your tounge and pulling them in. When you swallow an enemy they become an egg which follows you around.
User Image
You can then throw the eggs at things like enemys, bubbles with fruit in and far away switches and coins.
User Image
You can also flutter jump, which is just a second jump. All of these abilities are good fun to use too. As I was saying, once you've collected a certain amount of fruit you beat the level. There are also some rather too easy boss battles.
User Image
Once you've completed the story mode you can play it again and again playing a different level on each page than before. So it will last you a long time. There is also a mode where you can play all the stages you completed in the story mode again and beat your previous score.
User Image
It has some nice quirky visuals and music too. Overall, I think it's a good, fun platformer. Though I think it could be a little too easy for some. It's definitely worth a download for 1000 points. I rate this game 82%. (Yea, I use percentages, deal with it.

Oh, sorry about that. They're working for me. They're only screenshots and box art anyway.

So folks, what should I do next?
